Stranded in a Lookout Tower by a Surprise Snowstorm. Mountain top rescue

- I got called by a couple who was stranded in a mountain top lookout tower by a surprise snow that came a day early. They had planned to leave that morning before the snow came the following evening, but when they woke up they were greeted by around 18” of snow that their Subaru couldn’t get through. What they didn’t know was that down the mountain farther the snow was WAY worse and they were in a lot more serious of a situation than they thought.
When they called me, we decided that since there was no more snow coming that day or night, it would make sense to wait until the following day so that we had a full day to perform the rescue, and that allowed me to formulate a better plan. Since this was so far away from home, and was so deep into the wilderness, I didn’t want to try this one alone. So I called my buddy Adam with Remote Access Medical, and he brought along his medic Bryan to help out.
The following morning we took my American Track Truck @Jeep, and Adam’s @AmericanExpeditionVehicles Prospector up and
ran into FAR more snow than we were expecting. We ended up hitting about 4’ of snow at a very low elevation and all came to the conclusion that there was no way that car was getting out in one piece, so this was most likely turning into a people rescue mission, not a vehicle recovery. After an hour and a half of pushing through the snow, we finally made it to the top were we had a long conversation with the owners and they made the call to take the risk, and try to get the car out anyways.

“Take my Jeep, go down the mountains, I will stay here”. This is exactly what I was thinking when you came in the cabin!
It's a lot of people's dreams, but in reality everyone I've ever met would go insane after the first 3 months. Most people could never handle solitary confinement, no matter what they say. People in prison can survive days or weeks in solitary. Less than 1% can survive months or years in solitary, and even then, there is still plenty of human contact every few weeks.
You have to be a true lone wolf to survive, and actually crazy to really enjoy the minimum 7 months of isolation. Cell service would be an extreme luxury where I live, but without solar panels a phone would be a worthless brick in the first few weeks. You would also need some basic knowledge in the local flora, because even if you could collect enough meat for the entire winter, you would likely die from scurvy. There are enough vitamins available even in winter (vitamin C is critical), but you would NEED to know every possible source, and collection, and prep methods.
My dad and I did a week with no food, no guns, and only a fishing pole. The lakes we lived near were an easy luxury, but in November the ice fishing was awful. We caught 3 small trout after about 70 hours of ice fishing. Spruce tea became a staple, and while tasty at first, it was miserable by day 5. It gave us a few mandatory nutrients but after 7-8 months of winter it would have been intolerable. My slingshot bagged us a porcupine, and that was a huge morale booster. It tasted awful but I've been told that it can taste great if prepared properly. Something I learned on that trip was that salt is infinitely more valuable than a hatchet. Unfortunately halite is impossible to find in winter, so a large solid brick of salt would be essential for any extended trip. (I've never seen nor heard of a "survivalist" talking about how important salt is.) If we had a gun and it was legal to do so, we could easily have had a few elk and a moose; fine for protein, calories and basic nutrients for the winter, but still deadly without other options.
It's uncanny how you guys manage to always find all the fun ways to put in a days work while helping someone in it real deep 👍
A lot of people suggest a snowplow, but there’s very good reason we don’t use one. Number one is that there is no way in hell any normal sized vehicle is pushing through that deep of snow with a plow. Keep in mind that there was another foot to foot and a half of snow under how far we were sinking down in that intro clip. Notice that the highway departments all over the country use full size dump trucks loaded with weight in the back to plow through up to a couple feet of FRESH snow, and then have to switch to snowblowers when it gets any deeper than that. It’s simply not feasible/possible to plow roads all over the forests, especially once we get a little later into the season and the snow hardens up.
The other reason is that we are not the only ones who use these roads and trails. These are all winter recreation areas used by off readers, snowmobilers, skiers, and snow shoers. The forest service would never allow us to destroy their winter recreation areas to save someone’s vehicle. This particular road we were on is one of those areas that closes to wheeled vehicles in less than two weeks and becomes a very popular snowmobile trail for the rest of the season. Removing all the snow from a major snowmobile trail right before it opens is simply NOT an option, even if it was possible to do so.
Long story short, plow blades are cheap and if they actually worked for the type of recoveries I do, I would already have one.
I wasn't so much thinking of a real plow, just something triangular on the front since your front grill seemed to be pushing snow at times anyway, where the bottom wouldn't go below your bumper/frame but would help keeping the snow from building up on the front of the vehicle. That's just the engineer in me trying to find solutions to every minor issue.
I have a snow sport plow it's light and has a rubber bottom doesn't tare up the ground like others just a thought love the vids .
@@seannordeen5019 that creates another problem, because now you’re lifting your vehicle off the snow, which decreases traction.
I used to cross country ski on all the back roads in New Hampshire. I would be pretty ticked off if some clown had plowed it when I got there
@ZARGON the only snowcat that would be practical for me would be a Tucker Terra Light with all rubber tracks. But even that couldn’t plow a road like that, and I wouldn’t want to plow a road like that anyways
Casey, when you gave the money to Adam and Bryan, it just proved how much of a total rock star you are! It is truly no wonder at all why you have so many terrific friends, and why there is so much banter between all of you. It was fun to listen to Nate as this went along (and most of us can fill in the blanks I'm sure).

The ad revenue and advertising for his company make up for it. TH-cam isn't like the glory days, but with 125k subscribers, I'm sure his ad revenue just from the channel, and not even counting actual towing revenue, fully pays for all his fuel and equipment and overhead, and insurance. So the hundreds of dollars daily for towing goes right in his pocket. He seems nice. But he's not doing this for free. Nor should he. 😂
@@sasquatchrosefarts actually, the subscriber number has absolutely ZERO relationship to how much TH-cam pays. My pay is based on video view numbers, and watch time hours. I actually lose money on the vast majority of these videos, and then every so often one will do good enough to make up for the losses. Some months that will happen a few times, some months it doesn’t happen at all. As a matter of fact, I haven’t had a profitable month since May. The towing company doesn’t make any money. TH-cam completely killed the towing business and it’s done a grand total of 5 paying jobs this year. That’s actually why I bought the big truck and am hesitant to film most of the jobs I do with it. I needed something that would provide a consistent profitable income without relying on TH-cam, because TH-cam is definitely not paying the bills. Between the jobs and TH-cam, I put in far more hours now, and bring in less money, than I did when it was just me and my one little truck going to work every day.

Here is how you justify your purchases: You buy what you want, put it in the garage or somewhere where your wife can't see the purchase. Years ago (maybe 35) a couple of older guys got caught in an early snow at high elevation during deer season. They were many days over due and search and rescue were looking for them for days. Chopper finally spotted them and air lifted them out. Their truck with camper stayed there till spring thaw. The guys were none the worse for wear, food, or water when rescued. They had begun to ration their meals though. Said they could hear CB radio traffic talking about them and searching for them but couldn't reach them with their radio. A lesson or two learned. Winter weather is unforgiving of mistakes. Been there seen and done that.

The clear weather made this a deceptively beautiful rescue.
I think the reason these and Matt’s videos are so good is because there’s a story arc every time. You start with a problem, begin perpetration and the journey there, you go through struggles and challenging situations, and usually, end up coming away victorious.
That's a really good observation. Also, the manufactured drama in so much of what is on actual TV these days is like a caricature of real life. The writers of those shows (even the "reality" shows) make it so extreme that it is readily noticeable and very unrealistic. These TH-cam videos are just people doing their jobs and you get the same arc, but the level of drama is so much more authentic.
If this was a television show the tracked jeep would have thrown a track, or the Ram would have gotten stuck and needed pulled out. Maybe one of the campers would be suffering from a medical emergency.
Here they we just stuck, which is still a very life threatening situation. There was a tough choice to make about leaving the car or not. And, like you observed, we have a Hollywood ending.

Well that was a pretty dang amazing rescue video. I can see how people get in trouble there when you get those heavy snow falls and I am sure that the weather forecasters are always off on the amounts. Your Jeep did freaking amazing Casey , never so much as a hiccup. I am glad that everything turned out good , thanks for taking us along!
the weather in the cascades is very unpredictable no matter where you are, north or south. it's a nasty mountain range for weather... one time i was in the north cascades during august, beautiful 75-degree day. in the time span of 90 minutes, it went from sunny 75 degrees to overcast 28 degrees, 25mph wind with snow, then back to sunny 75 degrees. no warning, nothing like that in the forecast.

Many years ago a few friends and I were riding our dirt bikes up in the mountains in the spring. We were east of Hagelstien Park. (Next to Klamath Lake) The snow was still frozen, and we could go anywhere. We went for miles up to a look-out. We went up and ate our lunch admiring the awesome view. We decided to head back, fired up the bikes and went about a foot, and went in clear to the frame. We tried to pack a trail to get some speed up, but it was no use. We were about 9 miles from bare roads, and 30 miles from the trucks. So we just had to build a fire and wait until it froze up again, (we hoped), and then ride out. By about 12:AM, it had frozen up enough that we could go. We did need to keep our speed up, but we did make it out. Only one of us had lights (me), so I was in the lead, and I was also the one that found all of the soft spots. LOL This was in the early 70s.
The wives were less than pleased, but were happy that we at least made it out.

This is one of the coolest videos! It did look like you guys were havin a grand ol' time. It's easy to do that when you have good, capable friends helping into/out of sketchy situations. Nice hand off of the tip those folks gave you. 👌. What views! All of it from the chest high snow that looked like you were actually plowing the road open to looking off into the mountains. That old tower set-up too was way cool.
And yes it was on account of your transmission Nate won the race. Without your transmission to transmission power from engine to wheels, driving skills matter not!

Very cool how you continuously put others first on so many levels. One the big one helping that couple out of bad jam. Two giving the gas money to Adam. Three giving a transmission to Nate. Best video yet. That was certainly an amazing trip for all concerned. Having the medic guys along was a very good idea, given the conditions experienced. The intro and the music accompaniment was really great. And you have added Nate to the cast of characters who are your wingmen. The scenery in that area is beautiful. EDIT - I have watched this video all the way through fifteen times, it is that enjoyable.
Nate is a great wingman and a funny guy. Well worth the editing to have him along.

I did not think the Subaru would come off that mountain, least in one piece. Another outstanding job done ! Not even a scratch on the car.
It was great at the end when Casey figured out how a Subaru made it up to the tower. The couple being rescued were pretty cool. He was obviously down for an adventure--didn't get to have it on skis, so he bolted out of there in his newly freed Subaru to go make an adventure out of his 3.5 hour ride home. Nice video as always. Stupid is stupid. Why, in the dead of winter, do you fine gentleman have to risk life and limb to rescue people like them who don't use common sense and stay a little closer to reality in the dangerous areas in winter. Same thing happened to me once. was sitting at 11,500ft in a rental that took 6 months to book and then it dumped 18" of snow overnight with drifts hitting 3ft.
The next day I had a rescue company pull my car down the mountain. I wish they had a youtube channel it was a lot of fun.
It can happen really easy. I’ve been very close to getting stuck by surprise snowstorms as well, but I wasn’t lucky enough to be in a lookout tower!

Who goes into the mountains, in the winter, in anything but a four wheel drive, high clearance vehicle? The tower looked great to stay at. I’m sure they were very happy to be rescued.

Now we have fire satellites, so no need to pay someone to sit in a tower.
@@dubious6718No satellites. They just replace the people with cameras on the towers that are already in place. One person can watch many cameras. The tower I used to work at now has cameras.
@@lookoutman1970 They also use satellites. The maps are even open for the public to see where there is ongoing fires.
Awesome video Casey, was great to see you have Nate and the other guys and very capable truck go along with you on that recovery. I never thought that car would make it out without any damage. It would be great if those other guys would go with on your longer traveled recoveries for backup.
When they were making that trip up there through that untouched snow, it reminded me of that scene from the movie, The Shining where that cook took a Snowcat and went up to try to rescue the little boy and his mother from the Overlook Hotel. I'm sitting here in my warm house in Nashville and it's over 50 degrees OUTSIDE plus I even have a little space heater at my feet in addition to the central heat but watching that, I still feel like I'm freezing!
My day's of wondering off road ended a couple of years ago. Right now I'm sitting in front of a nice fire, drinking a beer and watching you.
Well done, Casey. I was glad to see the guy give some cash for the rescue. You don't charge and sometimes their poor judgment gets them in a bad situation or just having a bad day and they should offer something. You offered it to your buddy to cover his fuel for the assistance was a "pure gentleman". Nate is a character. You def need the "uncut" versions, we are missing the funnier parts.

LAUGHING MY ARSE OFF...... this is some "scene right out of the Shinning" stuff. Also here in the UK fifteen miles, you'd struggle to find fiftee miles away from anywhere.... maybe up in Scotland some where. People amaze me as to all the different situations they get stuck in. You just come to the rescue. How wonderful.
Lookout towers are pretty cool and the drone shot confirmed the magnificant places they are at! I really enjoyed this adventure. The suspense, friend's interaction and humor, Nate's commentary and McGyvering, the views, the icicles, the epic snow and tracks plowing through it. Seeing the rescuers cars struggle, and then a Subaru comfortably sliding behind them was pretty funny. They are so lucky to get out this way!

Has a tracked jeep , can't pull a car through the snow. This is why I love my Ford no tracks and I could have easily pulled that car out without damaging anything. Thats still a good man for going to help them

Very lucky couple. Casey to the recovery. (And Nate)! Wise idea to keep all three rigs together. Usually, misery loves company but in this case, it turned into relief and fun. Actually, I thought the couple in the car were constantly beeping horn to stop. NO, just creative censorship. Nate was a hoot for ride along, he should be with you more often. Grumpy and Ben stayed by their respective wood stoves. (Wise choice). The recovered couple will have another adventure about their life story. The worry was not about snow to deep at the tower, but running out of supplies. Do I hear the William Tell Ovature playing in the background.......Hi O Silver....aaawwwwaaaayyyy!
That was a really good video!! The extraction went a lot smoother than I thought. I was agreeing with you, Casey, that the Subaru was going t suffer some damage. But thanks to you guys off-setting your tracks out, plus the snow being very light and fluffy it made it out just fine! I'll bet that was one REALLY GRATEFUL couple!!
Being stuck in that tower would be heavily as long as you had food and drink, and a beautiful woman to keep you company!!
I was employed as a tow truck driver and I know that the tow hooks are designed for short ditch recovery there are also frame hook points that are stronger.
Pretty cool. I have a 89 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. And i spent 4 years restoring it to working safe condition. Rust repairs.. electrical.. leaks . New leaf springs shocks etc.. then i lifted it is mear 2 inchs put 31 mastercraft mudterrains on it. Note a stock wagoneer is as high as a lifted wrangler.. they sit pretty high.. and 31s is about max tire size for most older vehicles from the 60s.. its a 63 body they just built em till 91. I remember my mom and brother thinking i was wasting my money on this Jeep
Anyway. We got 3 feet of snow last winter. And my brother his friend and his friends dog were stranded in their house. No power for a week. No heat. A fire place but no wood.. the entrance to get in and out of the neighborhood was blocked by trees.
After 12 hours no one came to help and it was 3f outside at night. I drove my Jeep in 3 feet of unplowed snow for 30 miles with as much firewood as i could in the back (i have 14 acres of trees). My chainsaw and i got to the neighborhood. I cut the tree out of the way. And dropped the wood off.
This probably saved their lives. And mind you this neigjborhood had about 40 houses in it.. with no one able to get out due to the tree.
On the way there i cut about 6 trees in my way.. and pulled out a family in their wrangler who got stuck trying to turn around from a fallen tree on the road.
No one will ever mock me about my Jeep and time and money spent on it now... Best 4500$ i ever spent. With about 4500$ in repairs and tools to do it . I get 13mpg in it on a good day.. but id love to see anyones tesla or prius do this..
That was an awesome video Casey! Glad you got Nate to go with you as well as the other rig. There is safety in numbers and you played it safe. If I ever make it to Oregon I want to stay at that lookout tower. It is absolutely beautiful up there. If it's winter I'd have to pay you to take me up there and come get me, in the tracked Jeep.

This was a great adventure video. The track jeep did amazing. I was also impressed with the pickup with the mondo tires, I was surprised how well it did. Although I think your tracks breaking the snow helped them too. That couple was so lucky that first there was a vehicle like yours available, and second that the Subaru when rigged like you did just became a big toboggan and was able to sled across that deep snow.
Shows where you don't think about where and when going camping means risking your life, and the loss of use of your car for six months, and it may be parted out like the leftovers you pull out during the forest cleanup days when you do get to it.

I hope Nate can join you on more recoveries. He's a cool guy, you two are hilarious together, and I think he really enjoyed the adventure. I would not have bet that vehicle would come out unscathed, but I'm glad everything went so well. Gosh I hate snow! I have worked in it, shoveled it, driven in it, wrecked in it- not my fault! enough in my life. I wouldn't mind if I never seen any again. You guys stay safe in it, and GOD bless.

I grew up in Northern Iowa where winter snows often came in November and didn't leave till April. I love the winter pictures, just not being in them.

Hey that was an exciting rescue. Not sure how often the guy actually trusts the weather forecasts w/in a 24 hr period but that could have turned out a lot worse. They were lucky they had cell service, for sure.
I live in Juneau, Alaska and we've had 100+ inches of snow in the past two weeks. Anchorage has had 100+ inches in the past week, so we LAUGH at your snowfall! But thanks for doing this guy and his girlfriend a solid!
I've owned a couple of Subaru's up here and they're actually very good winter cars. Depending on the model, they have 8" of ground clearance and a really trick traction control system, but after a couple feet of snow, they will get stuck. So cool to be able to drive over the snow berm our plow guys make in front of the driveway!
Good call to not let them take the route closer to their home, by themselves. They had no idea whether there was more, or less, snow going that direction and going it alone, they could have found themselves in trouble and in a valley location with no cell serviIce. I'm wondering if you guys have used the Delorme InReach satellite communicator? I have a 30' sailboat here and we run out of cell service w/in 2 hours on the ocean, so the only way to contact emergency services is either through VHF radio (IF the C.G. has a repeater w/in range or there happens to be another boat w/in range) or by InReach. I like it because I can text my wife any changes in plans or get notification that she's ok by herself. They bluetooth to an app on my phone so I can use speech to text, etc. I also use it when I go to shore from my boat and go hiking or hunting, because it's so remote in places here, a broken ankle can be deadly, and then there are grizzly bears, a lot of them. One every square mile in some places. The InReach has an SOS function with a button press.
Loved your rig with the tracks. I don't have a truck that I could modify for that, and where I live, we don't have an extensive road system (all roads in Juneau come to an end), but it seems those tracks work great for what you do. Also, a good idea for your friend to come along with his Dodge. My dad had an old school Power Wagon (1975) and we'd put fatty snow tires on it and go hunting in the middle of winter on the north rim of the Grand Canyon...
Also, do you carry extra food/water/blankets, first aid, etc? Is there an episode where you showcase the gear you bring?
I have a modest TH-cam channel that shows some of the area around Juneau, and a few of my sailing trips both here and abroad. I'm retired and now spend my free time either sailing for run, sailing to race, hiking, fishing or spending an hour to edit one minute of video! I'm sure you know the feeling!

You could put a snow plow on that jeep. With those tracks it wouldn't have any problem pushing a little bit of snow and the car behind would be safe, plus you'd clear the road for anyone else that might use it.

One of the best vids yet, Casey! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! That dodge build was insane. I took a quick peek at AEV's website for their builds and that was a $125k build easily. but I never would have thought that giant diesel would have been floating across the snow like that. I thought for sure He would have buried it.

I know you never charge because you have a huge heart and yes the TH-cam channel but hey I would bet even without TH-cam your hearts too big to take when someone already down and defeated. I’ve rented one of those lookouts before. It was amazing. You have to book a year in advance tho because there aren’t many of them and they are in high demand. The one I stayed in looked out over the Rogue River and the views were epic. It still had the Osborne fire spotting device.

I wonder if a small, partial plow-like device could be rigged to clear some of the snow from the front of the vehicle being towed. It wouldn't have to clear down to the ground or even the full width, but it could help keep the snow from building up in front of the towed vehicle, reducing drag. The small plow could be attached in the rigging between the two vehicles. Loved the entire video. New subscriber! Shared video with friends.
