This is very useful Chris. Thank you very much for your hard work. You say the 7 charging sessions totalled 135 minutes. That is less than 20 minutes / 28.kWh each. So, if there were more convenient charging points you could have probably had 5 or even 4 longer stops - time for a meal. It is test cases like yours that show sceptics that long distance EV journeys are realistic. You have to come to the UK and set an new record :) I heard on another YT channel that if you repeatedly charge your ID.3 on a rapid charger then it invalidates the battery warranty. Is that true?
I think it's really pretty good actually, every 1000km trip under 11 hours sounds accepteble to me. The only downside thing is that this trip is fixed, it's not from a random location to a random location. A Paris-Berlin trip sounds fun to me and is probably about a 1000km. And it sounds to me like a realistic 1000km trip, not one exactly passing exactly the fast chargers you already know.
I like having the ID3 with no turtle mode as it sucks with the E-Golf. I want to decide how I drive and if I want it warm in the car or not. But E Golf switches to Eco Plus mode and switches off the heating, etc. That sucks. Great video and great result. But again another argument for a speed limit on our Autobahn.
trip meter might be wrong, but I think google might be wrong as well.. the distance depends on where on the road the car is located inner section outer section of the road. Travel daily the same road back and forth to work, and got slight different on the trip meter now and then.. so I assume it must be something with where the car is placed on the road as well.
@Seb C if you charge all the time at home maybe, but normally you don't/ can't. Also, I can't have a car that can't do 450km without a charge and there's also no competitor to an Octavia for now, which is a shame. And when there will be it will cost a kidney
@Seb C I currently drive 220km to work and back, so I would maybe save more than you, but the problem is that is currently. What if you change to a job, that is closer to you? Than the whole calculation goes down the drain. I also don't want to HAVE to charge every day. What if one day you can't, or something, than your f..cked
@Seb C nah, if we're comparing to a similar ICE car, let's say Golf, R-line with good options is 35k here, ID.3 with big battery (the only one useful for me) and good options will be 45k. That's 10k € in difference. That would take 4 years to offset I guess and that's if I drive 200km every day, which I don't. It's too long of a timespan to be sure what will happen and also how will the batteries hold up in long term. I can charge at home currently and I'm pretty sure there won't be an option to charge at work also if I change the job later on. But also if I relocate later I would be screwed with charging again
Thanks for a great video... can’t wait to get my own car... And here is the problem. While delivery probably goes well in Germany it’s very different other places. In Denmark the importer and the dealers are kept in the dark. Cars statues are not updated. My car “left” Volkswagen almost 3 weeks ago but haven’t been seen in Denmark yet nor do the importer or dealer dares to guess any longer. It would be nice if you use your contact at Volkswagen to get a statement on how they see their launch/delivery situation. And also have them explain why they decided to put all First Moves stuff only on Facebook which imo is a scandal for a company the size of Volkswagen. Hope you guys get some good information and content there - for me it’s another Volkswagen dark hole. Once again thanks for your content. I hope you get back to the Sunday live stream again so I can see what is happening on Facebook Steen

Only a few phantom error messages on the first weekend. None since then. There are a lot of features missing though. I can understand people that are complaining. I am just happy to be able to drive.
Great video 👍I really like the view from behind you in the middle of the car, high up. It would nice if you showed the charging screens a little longer, during charging stops.
I was just discussing this with Marcus yesterday. If we had ionity in Portugal, he would kill your time, even though 120 ish kmh limit. Big fail for German autobahn... 180 kmh, then 40 kmh, then full halt, then 180 kmh again= 90 kmh with extremely high fuel consumption.
Portuguese people dream of driving at max speed on the German autobahn, but the truth is that whenever I go to Germany it is hard to drive at 120 kph because there is so much traffic. Outside of the big cities in Portugal there is no traffic :-) However we currently only have 50kw chargers :-( The Portuguese motorway network is amazing for the size of the country, it is a pity it so expensive.
@@marcusevjourney566 Yeah, we do. That's true. We used to have autobahns in Portugal but now the police doesn't let us anymore. Problem back then was to find a car that could do more than 180/190 kmh. Driving a Lambo at top speed must be a blast. We do have a great motorway network, but also one of the reasons it is always free of cars is precisely because it is so damn expensive.
Good real-life test. For long distance trips I would still take the largest battery version (this is the middle one, right?). And, of course, availability of 100kW+ chargers is crucial.
@timemachine_194 For vacation or other leisure trips, I agree. But most of my road trips are business related 300-700 km round trip affairs, mostly on freeways, with charging infrastructure enroute woefully inadequate. While I usually _can_ arrange for AC charging at the destination, long charging stops would be extremely inconvenient often requiring overnight stay.
German Autobahn doesnt mean "freie fahrt für freie Burger" anymore. Its more: Drive a bit till you stand in a traffic jam. But still nice. "Baustellenhüpfen". Nobody really gets mor than 100 km per hour on long turns over 400 km. So electric cars with their good consumption at these average speeds are a good choice for long trips.
More weight means more kinetic energy. The difference will be very little on high speed run, when the air drag eats most of energy. Unless you forgot raise the air pressure in tyres. :D
I would like to know the optimal speed for reaching 1000 km in the shortest time. And what min and max SOC to aim for . There must be a solution to this equation. How to find it?
Great test! Very informative. I am a bit surprised by the high consumption (>200wh/km) compared to my own experience in a Model 3 Dual Motor. I never got >190wh/km on highway even in winter (more around 160 in summer). But the limit is 120km/h here in Switzerland. Do you think the difference of speed is the cause for such difference? The VW looks great and is a strong contender in my opinion.
Chris drove very fast. At the start with 135km/h average speed. So this mean a lot of times with 160km/h. At 130km/h test , or 124 km/h avg. speed he achieved 205 wh/km. Yes, the car is higher than M3. You can see his 90 and 130 km/h videos. At 90km/h he did 444 km range.
Proves the point that the world's biggest car manufacturer know how to build cars. Should be obvious but given all the VW-hate in youtube comments, clearly it's not.
Hey Chris... does the ID3 have a trip planner including charging stops similar to Tesla? And do you have to swipe a card or use an apps to start Ionity charge or it's directly a ''handshake'' like T....? thanks.
@@BatteryLife Thanks, my sun is buying my eGolf next spring, I'm in Montreal, so no ID3.... I was looking for the Model Y but your video is making me considering the ID4... Can wait a little bit (falls 2021), hopefully VW will have good news for Canada today
Someone needs to create a mobile app that can calculate proposed average travelling speed taking into account each car model's charging curve and efficiency/speed curve. Each car has a sweet spot where traveling faster doesn't necessarily means getting to the final destination faster, but just spending more time charging...
This is called abetterrouteplanner.com/ Or use ecalc.ch/evcalc.php And if user report data the calculations gets improved. What I have heared is that the calculations for Teslas are almost perfect due to this reporting.
I think the first year is 30 Cents per kWh, second and third year 55 Cents per kWh at Ionity with the ID.3 (or choose to pay 10 EUR per month for the priviledged price).

Is driving at 86 mph creating a lot of heat in the battery? What’s the average km per kWh? That’s is not a test in my view but data collection. Drive fast=more energy used. More energy used=more time and money to recharge. I think this proves the concept that driving faster than 100-105 kph is not an advantage in any EV for distance beyond a full charge range. Thanks, I am 7 years driving an EV and moderate speeds 100 kph or less in cruise control yields the best results for me. :) The car looks awesome but not coming to US.
It's driven time, charging time isn't counted in the instruments... Google doesn't know how did you passed people just the average road.. so if you want to really know the kilometer you need a measurement wheel.
Yes, I believe so. It would have been without "construction zones" ;) I had around 80 km of 60 to 80 km/h zone construction. Had to turn around 3 times, and 10 min of traffic with 40 km/h
Don’t film yourself going over the speed limit in a construction site! You don’t want to provide the evidence of a crime yourself! At about Minute 4:20. operating the main screen or any of your electronics without voice control is also illegal. Don’t do it. Thanks for doing these videos though! Keep it up!
Few km over the limit is not a crime and no police will consider worth it to start an investigation over a TH-cam video, this was not a reckless driving.
Ok ok I got it, 145 km 20 minutes 40% charge in Germany full of ionity charging points taking advantage of from 20% to 60%, good work has been a thesis: but now I ask myself a question with the recharging network of Ionity that exists in Germany you do not need 60 kWh or 100 kWh with the 28 kWh of the ioniq, any car can do that average in the ionity res in Germany and if Tesla does it with loads of 200 kW instead of taking 10: 35 takes 9 hours
He did that with a Tesla Model 3 SR+, and he managed 9 hours, he expected 10 hours for the ID.3 but since he had a lot of low speed areas due to roads being improved his final time was 10:34 instead of the expected 10. With the current conditions a Tesla would have lost about the same time or so, as the problem wasn’t really about charging time but about average speed due to traffic conditions. Edit: Now i see he did it in 9:30 with a M3 LR, not in 9 with a M3 SR+ (it could be possible to do that distance in that time, provided you have the right conditions)
Could you do a review on the build quality of your ID3? Some early examples are proving very un-VW-like in thier fit and finish. Hopefully its something they will address soon if they haven't already.
Battery Life that’s good to hear. Auto Und Sport noted the finish under the bonnet, the seems around the metal overlaps, the fit of the steering column plastic and the premature wear on the seats, but VW admitted they ID was rushed to market due to EU fleet regulations, hence the software update late this year/early next year when the cars are in customer hands. Some critics have demonised VW for that, probably unnecessarily.
@@BatteryLife Just looking at Ionity prices in UK they it shows 69p per kWH I assume this is a credit card one off purchase price and may be able to get lower if you sign up but I guess that involves a monthly/Annual Charge to be a member. Home charging would be cheaper (16 to 18 p/kWh) if you have night rate electric you might be as low as 6p/kWh
I wasn't clear on whether this was your own personal car or if this was a Demo. In regards to the incorrect measuring of distance, have you considered doing an "Official" test on the calibration? Or was this a calibration issue at the factory? Just curious because for some nuts (Like myself) that's a pretty important factor.
Ivan Dobrev I was just thinking on this. I have been told that BMW’s under report their power (supposedly for insurance reasons in the US), and I think my old BMW R1200ST and RT was also over reporting on the speed (I was told this was to help people not speed when there’s a posted speed limit.). I wonder if they are doing this on the cars and this is why there is a misreporting/calibration issue. Your thoughts? By the by, I love what I’m seeing here and I’m super disappointed we won’t have this model in the US. I might be moving to Australia over the next few months for a new educational opportunity and and am woefully sad that this model supposedly won’t hit Aussie shores until 2022. At least the big cities in Oz have great public transportation!
I like the exterior of the car besides ugly front bumper bolsters. But interior is just awful and plastic at leas one I saw on Frankfurt IAA last year.
Electric car competition has begun now with launch of VW ID 3 and ID 4 .. Tesla was sole market share leader and now VW will complete and take big chunk of market share .. In Europe and UK, VW will beat Tesla hands down .. In US and rest of the work , it will compete neck to neck Tesla will still dominate as it can be compared to apple of phone and VW can be android Both the VW ID 3 and ID 4 look interesting and ready to conquer
so, about 13 hrs charging included, and i guess realistically it's at least one hour extra? now, if i go with this rather optimistic figures (over infllatted tires, no any additional weight in the car etc), i could probably do it in one run with my 1.6 tdi going somewhere between 90-110,120 km/h. that's about third faster. which probably on long runs don't even matter that much (but i know i would hate waiting while charging every 200km or so), but when you're on the go, where you need to be somewhere fast etc, this charging thing is annoying. otherwise this id3 is probably first of the ev's that i find interesting. but sure not worth that money, even with government bonus.. just make "people's ev" for 20k, and that's it. that was idea of it's name in the end, isn't it?
Why dont charge longer and have fewer stops, its way better for some peace of mind. He is relying way to much on how much charge is left on the screen. I never go under 15 % with my TeslaX myself. Also you have the risk you cant go to an alternative recharger in case one is not working...
Cars too expensive. Range too short. Charging too often, slow and complicated. Maybe in 5 years time. Maybe for people travelling to work and back with shortest range, government car subsidies and cheapest battery option and second car for other travel or who take train or fly for holiday. Long distance and out of motorway and different countries would be too complicated. You go on holiday and want too see things and not to charge your car every 2 hours. Electric cars need to be comparable with ice cars in price and range. Good video to remind me of that and dream of electrified future. Not mass market yet. Suitability depends from particular lifestyle. Most suitable for predictable, boring and calculated lifestyle. Instead of buying this hyped up shit take public transport to work. If you commute to work and use this for the same route and charge it every night at home. Better for environment. Buy normal petrol or diesel low pollution car with some hybrid technology if possible and enyoj freedom to go and travel when and where you want including some shopping. You will save money, feel better as driving a car like this is like wearing limiting medieval suit. This is VW promotional video made to look like independent test.
I guess you are not in to EVs? This is 1000 km test. It is not normal driving. If you drive with 110km/h you need to stop to charge after 3 hours driving or around 300km. Even with ICE car you need to to rest after 2-3 hours. See his range videos. This is his own car.
But with your own ice car you stop when you want and choose the route you want. Refuelling takes minutes and pumps are everywhere. I am talking about travelling in your car. Why otherwise travel 1000 km unless you are on holiday or want to see something . You see some nature or history site and not motorway all the time. If I am not interested in electric cars I would not watch this video. I just think they are useless unless you choose the biggest battery to have safety margin when travelling but in that case it is too expensive. Too early to buy with your own money. The guy is German answer to other testing guys which look independent . His English is very good and he had access to top people in VW group. It smells like somebody who is pretending to be independent. He doesn't need to be responsible for his content but can influence people. How do you know it is his car and not given by vw and he is not in their employment or some associated group? It is all almost ideal. Complete story is fake set up by vw marketing. They pay for advertising why not do it this way also. It does not take a genius to organise this. They faked emissions tests. Didn't they? I suppose he will "buy" I'd 4 as well when the time arrives.
@timemachine_194 that is what I have said. It is not for everyone at the moment . It suits you it doesn't suit me. I like to drive to remote places and there are no chargers there or I do not want to depend on them. Small turbo petrol or diesel engines use less fuel anyway and price of fuel is cheaper and will remain for some time or forever as some analysts predict. Ice cars will polute less as they use less fuel and legislation is stricter. Electricity and battery is produced somewhere and that is pollution? I have lpg vehicle and that makes more sense at the moment. Cheap fuel, instalation and plenty of stations in any country. As for price of cars they are all gone expensive with justification that they use more technology. 10 years ago they charged €200 for USB before that for air-conditioning and radios and electric windows. Most of the technology in the car can be done with mobile phone. Radars etc are produced in high numbers so the price cannot be that high. It is all marketing. People paid 30% more for suv than compact cars. They pay more for technology and safety they will pay more for electric cars. As I've said maybe in 5-10 years time when prices are lower. But by that time customers will get used to more expensive lifestyle cars. They sell less in numbers but more in value so more profits. You will be able to upgrade them as well (software and not only wheels etc.) and who can resist a good" upgrade"?😁

The car looks great , man ! I want to buy one same yours.
Turtle mode is only at extreme low SOC. But not in this car. So far ;) The automatic switching is annoying yes.

trip meter might be wrong, but I think google might be wrong as well.. the distance depends on where on the road the car is located inner section outer section of the road. Travel daily the same road back and forth to work, and got slight different on the trip meter now and then.. so I assume it must be something with where the car is placed on the road as well.
Nice vid. Great future ahead for this channel I guess.
Thank you for the hi speed test! super useful
Really cool vid !! Keep it up !!
Nice video. Another ICE killer, good!
With this price, there's no way it is
@Seb C if you charge all the time at home maybe, but normally you don't/ can't.
@@general236 For me, 220km distance between home and work is the problem. Not which traveling method, let alone which car.
Be safe and always remember to STOP at the stop sign...
Björn will be proud of you.
That would be nice. I adore him.
I hope you get back to the Sunday live stream again so I can see what is happening on Facebook
Steen
Delivery is not going well in Germany either
Battery Life even more reason to hear Volkswagen’s take on it.
Outstanding performance! I think the best non Tesla EV on the market for long distances. Strange that you had issues with the Model 3 on IONITY, I never had issues. Did you push the plug at the handshake?
I also never had issues on IONITY with Tesla. The question is why use IONITY when Superchargers are way more cheaper.
nietypowy88 I used IONITY often with the old priceplan because of the speeeeeeed... and reliablity nowadays I boycot IONITY because of the ridiculous dropin prices
Arnold _&2 clear, I also charged few times but now Supercharging price is 1/3 of IONITY
Respect for the work you do with this!
A little bit on the side: Have you experience any bugs of any consequence in your car?
Edit: And it IS a beautiful car! 😍
Only a few phantom error messages on the first weekend. None since then.
There are a lot of features missing though. I can understand people that are complaining. I am just happy to be able to drive.
@@BatteryLife Did you have to fix it by the dealer? Or did the phantom errors go away with a simple "reset" in the infotainment? :-)
@@edwinklift I don't think he visited a dealer.
Great video 👍I really like the view from behind you in the middle of the car, high up. It would nice if you showed the charging screens a little longer, during charging stops.
There is a full charging video
One of the best electrical Cars.
Well done, thank you! :D
@@bazoo513 In this case , 77 is better. For families is not necessary.
6:10 Don't worry, the ID.3 really looks good!
Now how about a test with a fully loaded car (5 occupants + cargo)?
Would just be 30min more. If even.
More weight means more kinetic energy.
The difference will be very little on high speed run, when the air drag eats most of energy. Unless you forgot raise the air pressure in tyres. :D
Germany: Driving 135 kmh is barely enough to pass caravans....
Makes the Model 3 seem like an old car. Nice.
I noticed the green sticker !?! What gives ? Aren’t these for emission? Why are they needed on an EV? Can you explain ? Thanks!
Required in Germany, does not matter what car.
Can you make a video with top speed Max range? That you drive continu 165km/h and show what the range will be at top speed.
Maybe at some point.
Thumb up for using the right lane on a german autobahn ;-)
Can you pls do it with ID.4 later on?.
If they give me one ;)
It beats the Polestar. how awkward is that?
Proves the point that the world's biggest car manufacturer know how to build cars.
Should be obvious but given all the VW-hate in youtube comments, clearly it's not.
The screens in the car alsways have a slight pinkish tone. At least on my monitor. Maybe your cam needs some white balancing?
Automatic white balance
Hey Chris... does the ID3 have a trip planner including charging stops similar to Tesla? And do you have to swipe a card or use an apps to start Ionity charge or it's directly a ''handshake'' like T....? thanks.
Not yet
@@BatteryLife Thanks, my sun is buying my eGolf next spring, I'm in Montreal, so no ID3.... I was looking for the Model Y but your video is making me considering the ID4... Can wait a little bit (falls 2021), hopefully VW will have good news for Canada today
Someone needs to create a mobile app that can calculate proposed average travelling speed taking into account each car model's charging curve and efficiency/speed curve. Each car has a sweet spot where traveling faster doesn't necessarily means getting to the final destination faster, but just spending more time charging...
This is called abetterrouteplanner.com/ Or use ecalc.ch/evcalc.php
And if user report data the calculations gets improved.
What I have heared is that the calculations for Teslas are almost perfect due to this reporting.
Nice Video, thx.

VW won't sell the ID3 here in the US. This makes me a sad panda.
Wow well done . How much it cost you to do 1000 Km ? Great charging speed with id3 .
Nothing. Free charging for a year with the first.
Battery Life nice we all love free
It's driven time, charging time isn't counted in the instruments... Google doesn't know how did you passed people just the average road.. so if you want to really know the kilometer you need a measurement wheel.
Charging question: can we use the Tesla superchargers to charge the ID3?
Nope. That was just a glitch.
100kph average speed including charging is not possible with the 58kWh version, only with the bigger battery.
Yes, I believe so. It would have been without "construction zones" ;) I had around 80 km of 60 to 80 km/h zone construction. Had to turn around 3 times, and 10 min of traffic with 40 km/h
I cannot find out if id3 has some sort of autopilot. Has it?
Max has travel assist. So yes
👍
By the way "road works" is British. In America we say "construction zone" like you.
I was wondering who told him to say "road works."
Could you do a review on the build quality of your ID3? Some early examples are proving very un-VW-like in thier fit and finish. Hopefully its something they will address soon if they haven't already.
Mine is perfect.
@@Olliebobalong AMuS used pre-production model. It was blown out of proportion.
Ionity pricing would make the ID3 equivalent to a 21 mpg diesel not very good. 2.6 mile per kWh is much worse than Tesla 3 at 4 miles per kWh
With owning an Id.3 Ionity is cheaper ;)
His own car, all cars have calibration issues of some kind. They are not very precise.
No head pump ? So VW had downgraded even the latest egolf has head pump. The car will be more efficient if it has head pump. Thanks.
You can have a heatpump but yoj have to pay for it. I didn't.
Wieviele Ladepunkte wird man wohl pro 100km einer dreispurigen Autobahn brauchen, wenn alle Autos EV's sind ?
This is the first I’m hearing the car doesn’t include a heat pump, is it an optional extra?
In Germany the First Plus doesn't have it. Max does. Northern countries are different.
Many cars doesn't have heat pump. Including Tesla.
Roadworks is British English, construction zone is correct in American English.
And i wrongly say construction site!
I like the exterior of the car besides ugly front bumper bolsters. But interior is just awful and plastic at leas one I saw on Frankfurt IAA last year.
It has soft armrests in doors now and high quality piano black look which is only available in higher Enyaq trim levels for example. ;-)
Now the EVs catch up with fossils. That was a very good result :-)
Quite impressive time, I don't think I can do that in my ICE car.
Yes you can, but that is normal ;)

Tesla will still dominate as it can be compared to apple of phone and VW can be android
Both the VW ID 3 and ID 4 look interesting and ready to conquer
nice video but the id3 seens to consume a little too much....
It does. But at the speeds I was doing. I am ok with it. Model 3 LR did it in 9,5h. Avg cons was 260 Wh/km, I think. I was driving faster though.
@@BatteryLife Did you not run into roadworks, Stau or senseless speed limits with the Mod 3?
Roadworks the same, but I was driving faster. Up to 200 km/h.
So, guy's, who is gonna do it on monday ??)))
so, about 13 hrs charging included, and i guess realistically it's at least one hour extra? now, if i go with this rather optimistic figures (over infllatted tires, no any additional weight in the car etc), i could probably do it in one run with my 1.6 tdi going somewhere between 90-110,120 km/h. that's about third faster. which probably on long runs don't even matter that much (but i know i would hate waiting while charging every 200km or so), but when you're on the go, where you need to be somewhere fast etc, this charging thing is annoying.
otherwise this id3 is probably first of the ev's that i find interesting. but sure not worth that money, even with government bonus.. just make "people's ev" for 20k, and that's it. that was idea of it's name in the end, isn't it?
No! Charging is included in the 10h 34min.
1000 km with 180 km/h Speed
Why dont charge longer and have fewer stops, its way better for some peace of mind.
He is relying way to much on how much charge is left on the screen. I never go under 15 % with my TeslaX myself. Also you have the risk you cant go to an alternative recharger in case one is not working...
Because it is faster. This test was about how fast to drive 1000km!
Ok, maybe get a better camera that knows how to focus?
