    Beautifull landscape specially with all that snow. The drone shots are a magnificent plus for the show, and the ID3 performed amazingly well (only 3kw/h for all the downhill journey and no slides). Top notch quality wise.

    41kw at 73% is ID.3 cold gate! It should be at 50kw. Cold gate even happens in Portugal this month, to fix it charge for 10mins on a DC charger then all other charges will be 50kw after that at least at 10 Celsius. I hope by next winter the ID.3 has pre-heat for the battery. The new software looks great. The fact it still shows 4km/min is just bonkers. I have had mine show 4km/min, 5/min and 6/min and at each stop it has had the full 50kw. This is so much more confussing then showing the kw. It is like if I went to a petrol pump it showed me the kms/second of filling instead of the litres being put into the tank, crazy. This is a big mistake by VW, at least give the option of kw or kms/min in settings.

      At least Chris has the OBD11 stats now to look at the real kW, if I understand it correctly.

    At 13-30 I expected to see a dirty great Dragon come into shot, road and scenery very similar to where I am, but dare I say it, Kona is way more efficient.

    Very nice test Chris seeing the consumption evens out (sort of). I live on a hill, 5km away from downtown. As you can imagine in winter the consumption is awful if you just go for a quick shopping trip. The car and the battery have to warm up and regen is limited during the first km downhill. No way to even out the uphill consumption. Preheating before start helps a little of course. This is just something to keep in mind when buying an EV. But anyway I will never go back to fossil😎

    • @audunskilbrei8279
      @audunskilbrei8279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just remember that fossil consumption is also terrible on short cold trips. Especially diesel. And it takes much longer to get heat in the cabin. So not only are they burning alot of money but they are also cold and uncomfortable.

    • @borama7845
      @borama7845 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@audunskilbrei8279 So true. My daughter loves the preheated cabin, I don‘t have to free the frozen windows with a scratcher and there‘s no dangerous limited sight during the first kilometer. On top, even though the consumption is high, I still use less energy with my ID3 than with my old Diesel.

    • @metoo3773
      @metoo3773 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you for sharing. So how much range do you then have during these cold winters? And what is rated for your model? I fear going ev cause of the unpredictability during cold winters

    • @borama7845
      @borama7845 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@metoo3773 I also drive an ID3. If I start with a cold car (no preheat) at around freezing temperature, the consumption during the first kilometer (until I reach the downhill part) can be 35-45kw/100km. For my own sanity I do not watch the monitor during that time😁. After the short shopping trip (5+5km) consumption is down to 25-30kw/100km. The longer you drive the further it goes down. My long range consumption/range is roughly in line with Chris‘ tests. So if you have short trips in winter and the car cools down between the trips, you will have to charge more often. Personally, if not occupied, I simply use the free charger at my grocery store while shopping😉

    • @metoo3773
      @metoo3773 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@borama7845 thank you for sharing! I can understand how scary it must look seeing 35 kwh/ 100km :D. Well around town in the winter it seems to be just fine. Problem is I need to make a 270km round trip on weekends sometimes. Even if the rated range is 400km it still feels like i might have range anxiety. Especially during the winter times. lol.

  • @gregs7201
    @gregs7201 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Chris -- thank you for yet another very interesting video. I commented on a previous video of yours regarding the "battery life" or range of the ID3. (I have one and live in the UK). The claim from VW is the car has a range of 260 miles - 420KM on a full charge. I have looked at several of your videos and have done some calculations. (please correct me if I am wrong). It seems long term stats as per you most recent video show 22KWh per 100KM. Assuming you have the standard 58KW battery pack that means an average range of 264KM. The winter test at 90KMH showed 18.3KWh per 100KM or 316KM from a full charge. The winter test at 130KMH is 26.7 KWh per 100KM or 217KM from a full charge. All of these figures are way below the promised 420KM range from a full charge. As I said I am in the UK and it is cold here but not a cold as you experienced in the mountains and I probably have driven less at night than you seem to have done. I am getting an average of 151 miles 243KM from a full charge after 1700 miles or 2700KM
    I have been speaking with Volkswagen and they claim that the promised 260 miles .. 420KM is over a full year and that winter will be significantly lower range than summer and in summer I can expect to get over 300 mile or 500KM from a single charge.
    I'd love to hear your thoughts on this claim and also very interested in the thought and comments from your subscribers.
    Thanks again for your informative videos and please keep them coming.
    Greg

    The potential energy you have at 1040m height is 1700kg * 9.8m/s2 * 1040m / 3600s = 4.8 kWh, or 9% of your battery capacity at cold. It means if we exclude the height difference, the road/air drag costs ~6% of your battery for the downhill trip and 5% for the uphill trip.
