      Miles O'Brien

The way Vader kept his posture until the door closed out of Luke's sight, is absolutely crippling. Luke saying "Then my father is truly dead," absolutely shook him. Though you can't see it, him slumping and gripping the railing for support are all but tell tale signs of a man shedding a very painful tear. By far one the best scenes in Star Wars cinema. Body language is so much more stronger than words. Absolute props to David Prowse for his stellar performance as Vader's body.

Indeed. I had a girl in my graduating class that I antagonized so badly that when I saw her again in 2017-ish she still harbored resentment toward me, and I did not blame her one bit. I did go on to apologize and told her that she could even punch me if she wanted to and I knew I deserved it. But she saw I was sincere and she immediately let go of her resentment toward me and we've been friends ever since. I drop in on her from time to time on FB. Kind words and a sincere apology and a small display of love can break through the strongest barriers of hate and suffering.

@@crazyman7671 I also have a story about letting go of my hate. I have had been clinging onto hatred since middle school and up to my senior year. In my senior year, I had a lot going on in my life; appendicitis... but there was this one boy. He was someone who was often bullied because he had autism and we weren't friends until the end of senior year. Given I almost lost my life, I had pretty much went under a very big transformation. For years I didn't care about if I was to die, believing I was worthless, and so I reflected myself onto otuers. When I started changing, I have cut off negative "friends" and befriended better people. I never bullied him but I ignored him and allowed my "friends" to bully him which I felt guilty for. Despite this, we both walk the stage on graduation (we were both class of 2023 so this year) and he taught me to realize I should be better. He was not the only one who helped me in redeeming myself but he was one who was quick enough to forgive me when I went through it.

But disappointment is something else. Luke truly expected better of his father and Vader could not meet those expectations. When Luke says, "Then my father is truly dead", it's out of heartbreak, not outrage. If anyone knows what it means to hurt those you love, it's Anakin. This is a wonderful scene... particularly how Luke completely (emotionally) disarms Vader. Vader is expecting Luke to be the cocky, defiant young rebel he met in Empire... someone who hates him. That Luke has matured and is calm and peaceful and is appealing to Vader's humanity... that was unexpected. It's all there in Jones's vocal performance. He starts off sounding like the antagonistic, hate-filled Vader from a New Hope... and at times, begins to sound like a father talking to his son. That his son is disappointed in him hurts him more than if his son merely hated him. He is too familiar with being hated for that particular emotion to even register.

We can clearly see how there is really a conflict inside Vader. Darth Vader, dark lord of the Sith, usually acts with brutality and with anger. Confident of what he does, harsh with his subordinates. Here, we can clearly see Vader on a depression. He doesn't talks in a fully direct way, nor with a high voice. He is calmed, like bored. When Luke said that there was a conflict within him, a normal Vader would had answered with words of how he is more powerful than ever. But he just says that it is too late for him.

When Luke calls him father, he shows pleasant surprise (1:16).
Then Luke makes the point about Vader purposely not killing Luke because he couldn’t bring himself to kill his son. It’s like Vader agrees with Luke but wants to change the subject because he feels uncomfortable 1:49.
Then he is truly proud that Luke constructed a light saber 2:00.
He mentions Obi Wan and you can tell he is remembering him more as the friend that tried to save him 2:21.
When he tells Luke “you don’t know the power of the dark side”, I don’t think Vader is bragging. He is essentially saying, you don’t know the how much the dark side has a power over me. 2:27.
Then he says it’s too late for me 2:52 which signifies that Vader has thought about it but believes he is too fargone and has so much guilt about the past.

The way he admires the new lightsaber he constructed himself like what Anakin did as a padawan, realises the bravery of Luke for arriving to face him alone rather than joining the Rebels in a full-scale attack, and senses the near-godlike potential of the Skywalker blood running through his veins - Vader probably wanted nothing more than to give him a hug.

This is probably the best scene in the whole saga. And the line: "It is too late for me, son" is so chilling. It is because we can all relate to him. The pain, the desire to change and the harsh realization that there is no turning back. That you cannot change yourself and that whatever you do, your past will always haunt you. The beauty of this scene is that this is the tragedy that we all have to face. I for one completely underatand Vader. Well, not being a child murderer, but sometimes the weight of your past is unbearable. And you realize that there is no turning back, nothing you can do, that you have to live with the choices you made and all the pain that comes with that.
This is not the tragedy of Darth Vader, but the tragedy we all have to face. Bravo, mister Lucas for this scene alone...

His calm and control here and his faith in his father despite everything makes his anger towards Vader later all the more impactful. Not just to us, but to Vader.
Seeing how his son has mastered his emotions must have made the Anakin that was still in there very proud, it's something he was never able to do.
So when Luke does lose it later and lashes out at Vader, it must really hit him seeing history repeat itself, and his son starting down the same path. Then when Luke calms himself and _still_ refuses to kill him, it shows Anakin how he could have been, that he did have a choice, and still does.

I have always liked how determined, resolute, and unafraid Luke is in this scene. After, their last encounter at Bespin you might expect Luke to be at least a little intimidated but instead he stares Darth Vader down right from the start. At Bespin Luke still carried a blaster, but now "he is armed only with this," a lightsaber. He has truly become a Jedi, not just in terms of skill with a lightsaber, but in terms of maturity and an inner strength of character. "That's why you won't take me to your emperor now," was Luke trying to use a 'Jedi mind trick' to influence Vader, trying to get through to him by using the Force to get him to think? "Then my father is truly dead," Luke shakes his head in disappointment and walks away, the clear winner in this verbal and mental confrontation.

I always thought "You wont take me to your Emperor now" has a few meanings here. Vader knows the Emperor has foreseen Luke destroying them both, and Vader knows exactly just how powerful Palpatine is. Luke also was told "You do not yet realize your importance" from Vader, and all three know he is a full Jedi at this point.
Luke is very aware of his own skills at this point, so it is time to follow the will of the Force. He also believes he has the fail safe of the rebel fleets attack on the death star after the shield is down as an ace in the hole. He also is using emotional blackmail to possibly temp the offer Vader gave him in their last meeting that he would betray the Emperor to rule the galaxy as father and son. He knows he isnt loyal to Palpatine, two vs one is better odds. For Luke it is his best tactical odds to defeat the Emperor, even if he dies in an exploding death star.
While Luke wasnt willing to sacrifice Han and Leia on Bespin, even though Yoda told him "if you honor what they fight for, yes." He was willing to sacrifice himself 100% for the rebel cause.

I love how it went from, “You don’t know the power of the Dark Side” to try to drag Luke into the power aspect of the force, to, ‘I know the Dark Side; I must obey my master or I will die.”
And then for Vader to look at his son as he walks away... almost like a silent goodbye as if he was sending him to die. Then, a moment of self reflection as he gazes at Endor.
    Great attention to detail, Lucas.

Sad thing is that one video showed an interesting theory that had Vader nor saved Luke on the Death Star, Palpatine would have killed Luke, ordered Vader to throw Luke into the shaft that he was thrown, and then Palpatine would have choke lifted Vader like he does Kylo Renn, and thrown Vader down the shaft too.

I really wanted to introduce my girlfriend to Star Wars. She didn't like the prequels that much, but since ANH her attitude changed drastically. And then came RotJ and this scene. With this scene she finally realized what Star Wars is truly about. She was really moved at the finale and when Anakin showed, she burst into tears.

It's better to show them in the order of release. The prequels, if seen before, kinda ruin the surprise of the "father revelation" but when you know how everything will end they take on more of a Greek tragedy form. Character doomed by destiny to succumb to their flaws and be brought down by fate

chopperbubba I agree, people always give credit to Harrison Ford and other actors but overlook Hamill. I feel that because Ford became such a big movie star over time people forget about Hamill who didnt do much acting later. When Vader says its too late, that is actually the turning point for him. Luke's faith in his father's goodness has him wanting to believe. Sideous originally used fear to tempt Vader to the dark side, Luke now tenpts him back to the light through love. Very good writing, almost Shakespearean in it's symmetry.

  • @emanuelmartinez7267
    @emanuelmartinez7267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

That "its too late for me son" is such a Shakespearean line, its just a few a words but says so much about Vaders emotional and mental state. That was him basically saying that he doesn't deserve the redemption Luke wants to bring him, that wasn't Vader speaking but Anakin Skywalker letting his guard down briefly to speak to his son honestly and it also proved that what Luke said was true, Vader still had some good in him as only a good person will acknowledge that they've done wrong and feel like they don't deserve forgiveness
