The Kyoto Animations (KyoAni) arson attack was really bad. 36 people died, 34 people were injured (they all recovered, 27 went back to work at KyoAni), making it one of the most deadliest massacres in Japan after WW2. It only makes sense that after that attack, Japan will take any threats much more seriously. It's been 2 years since then (man i thought it was only like 6 months ago time flies), and they guy still hasn't been sentenced yet but it will probably be a death sentence (chance that it will be life imprisonment because the guy has a history of mental illness).
This guy was really stupid doing that on his phone, especially after the KyoAni attack. What did he think would've happened?

I believe that Watanabe will be taken to either prison or jail, because threats didn't killed anyone but did damaged them. If it's something worse like hijacking, genocide, manslaughter or something worse then he could get a life or death sentence. And I agree that he should not go to jail, but take some therapy, because there's many people out there that have mental diseases, we can't stigmatize them, because that would just feed their illness becoming worse in their condition. I hope Watanabe is fine and doesn't commit the same crime, twice.

  • @noireisbest6786

I think mental health care is the better course of action, punishing people doesn't really stop crime. Like sure, you'll always have that person who will do messed up things no matter what you do but that isn't an excuse to at least see what else is going on in Akira's life. Because I'm going to go on a limb and say, this isn't really about video games.

Japan has a high conviction rate due to how they do interrogations and that they can hold suspects and such for a long time without a lawyer even being present. Most convictions, to my knowledge, were usually based on the "confessions" the police get out of the suspects during interrogation. By the sounds of it, they seem to mentally wear them down. When living over there, I was really curious about this, but I still couldn't get a way to verify or even clarify if this was definitely the case.
Of course for this particular case with Watanabe, given that he confessed and all that, he probably will be found guilty.
I'm also still so-so on the mental health thing. I moved back home in 2018, but lived in Japan from 2010 - 2011, then again from 2012 - 2018. During that time, mental health seemed to be kind of a taboo subject and not spoken about all that much. I'm not sure if it's any better now, though. Maybe cases like this one can help bring more awareness. I now wonder if anything came of that case with the teen girl who decapitated one of her classmates and kept the corpse in her apartment (which her family was paying for, iirc). That happened while I was still over there, but when talking about things that happened prior to that, the signs were there of how that girl needed mental help.

Making an example out of people who threaten seems a bit misguided, if anything, it just pushes those who would act to act with no warning. Threats beforehand give the police and victim a chance to ready up, tighten security and such. Silencing the threat doesn't really stop someone who's gonna burn down a building anyway, it just makes them think 'better not make a threat, I'll get caught before I can act.'
Better to quietly figure out who made the threats and watch them, catch them in the act of setting up to do something instead of making a huge show of punishing over a threat. This feels like a reactionary tactic to win back the public after failing to act on the previous arsen to me. More security theater than security, if they can stop death threats it's something to show off to the media, versus keeping quiet and using threats to find those panning to act and stopping them before they do.
Often actual security is very invisible, it works better that way. But it doesn't win police brownie points with the media.

A problem that is quite large in Japan, is that there are bitter and suicidal people take to violence in order to procure "suicide by murder".
This is the unfortunate consequence of having the death sentence here.
This is a reason behind a lot of arson and knife attacks here unfortunately.
More needs to be done here about helping people from developing mental health issues and keeping people healthy, body, mind, and soul.

"When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! If one gets so angry at losing a game, they should not play such games.
Therapy only works if the patient actually wants to accept the help and want to get better.
Having known a couple of pathetic gamers who take a medium of entertainment way too seriously, they don't want help. They want an echo chamber and feel personally attacked when someone tries to help or even give advice on how to play a game better.
While I do not agree with some of japanese justice system. The behaviour of threatening others is unacceptable, regardless of where one's mental state is.

I worked as a GM for World of Warcraft when it came out, and these kinds of threats were pretty common, to the point we had a policy. Generally warning the customer our policy was to immediately contact law enforcement shut them down pretty quick... but occasionally, they would persist and law enforcement would be contacted.

In case it hasn't already been said, the figures on Japan's conviction rate are skewed by a couple of factors. The first is that even people who admit to guilt must stand trial, and the second is prosecutorial discretion. The vast majority of criminal prosecutions in Japan are based on a confession, and prosecutors are much less likely to pursue a case in Japan without a confession.
Also noteworthy, in the US, only 2% of *federal* defendants go to trial, and 83% of those are convicted. Among all federal defendants, 90% pleaded guilty, and 8% of cases were dropped. So if the US had the same system as Japan, where guilty pleas still go to trial, the US would have a 99.6% conviction rate in federal trials. (See Pew Research Center, June 11, 2019)
