  • Link is famous for NEVER speaking in the Legend of Zelda games. But why not? Why doesn't Nintendo let Link say anything? Well, in this video I'll go through the entire Zelda series, from the NES to Breath of the Wild and beyond, to figure out why Link hasn't said a word!

    BOTW link is stated to be a chatterbox in some companion material or other I think. But he’s selective mute pre-calamity and we know he speaks to Zelda atleast once. Post calamity he’s lost a lot of the baggage that stopped him from talking or being expressive, so he is now VERY expressive, and is implied to speak constantly within the game itself.

Besides my great concern that it will be a lot like the Mario movie and be lacking in story, which feels very incongruous for Zelda's tone, I'm afraid that they will have Link be a mute, or that even if he does, there will be a bunch of groan worthy Marvel jokes alluding to the fact that he doesn't have voice acting in the games.

    Link is not entirely silent. In Windwaker, he yells "come on!" out loud. And in Breath of the Wild, there are moments where he speaks full sentences in the text. My favorite examples are when he's demanding the glider from Rhoam and the boots from the guy that has a crush on him. Zelda revealed in her diary that Link is a glutton but we can see for ourselves that he is also very greedy.

    • @lexinicole4317
      @lexinicole4317 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      …what? Link is “greedy” in what instance exactly? With the paraglider he makes an agreed upon trade (in his mind, as that’s what Rhoam told him it was) and it gets backed out on. Not to mention you have dialogue options in this game, meaning either all of them can define Link’s character, or none of them can.

    • @NekoTamer15
      @NekoTamer15 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @Lexi Nicole In BotW, instead of saying just yes or no, Link has dialogue to represent yes or no. When talking to Rhoam about the paraglider, if you say yes to wanting the paraglider, Link says "hand it over!" And with the sand/snow boot guy, if you are initiating the side quest, the first 2 things Link says to the guy are "nice sand jogging" and "gimme the boots" Whenever Link is told yes by the player, his first instinct is to demand being given stuff. Getting it through a trade doesn't make him non-greedy. It makes him reasonable and hard working

The royal family has the tradition of passing down the Zelda name, but I think each hero canonically has different names. I don't understand why BOTW removed that option. It's not like there's that much voice acting in the game, they could have easily avoided having his name spoken in voiced cut scenes.

    The question is definitely more of why _we_ don't hear him talk as opposed to why he doesn't "speak". We know because of dialogue options that he talks to the characters in-game. It's pretty straightforward until Breath of the Wild where we get a lot more personality in his response options. Even though we don't hear them spoken aloud, that already is a pretty big step forward in giving him a personality.

    Also, it gives a unique charm and warmth to the game, having this very stoic and brave warrior getting put into any kind of situation (ranging from epic fights to more clumsy moments) without ever feeling jarring. Truly a man for all seasons.
    Having Link talk/react at each new zone/encounter/situation would add an unneeded layer of cognitive complexity, instead we have a very close relationship between both the player's and Link's journey of discovery.

    I'd argue Mario also counts as a silent protagonist - his utterances are more along the line of thematic vocalisations than actual statements. "Mamma mia!" and "haaa!" both serve the same purpose - to make the character feel more dynamic and present, and give a sense of their personality and character. In neither case is the character actually *saying* anything, like "I should go to the shops for milk".
    Both characters make *sounds*, but that's it. With the exception of the slightly questionable-sounding line Mario has at the ending of 64.

    I remember watching the cartoon as a kid. Looking back, that voice is unironically a decent fit for (at least an older) Link. I watched another video a few weeks ago but I don't remember from who. It was about the journal entries in BotW. In English, it's written as "You did this, now you need to go do this". In Japanese, however, it's written in Link's perspective, and it actually gives a lot of insight's into Link's personality, and it can honestly be applied to almost every Link. Link loves opening chests and getting treasure (I think in almost every game, Link always looks incredibly happy to get treasure), and it seems like Link is actually a major foodie. There's also several times in BotW's dialogue choices where Link is shown to be a bit of a jokester (seals!). Post-amnesia BotW Link seems to have lightened up a lot now that a lot of the stress was lifted as a result of the amnesia.

    I interpret Link talking just we the audience rarely see (or hear it) occur. In 'Breath of the Wild' through one of the flashbacks Zelda says, you taught me a valuable lesson of how to calm my horse down. I forget the exact saying but it is heavily understood Link spoke to Zelda and informed her how he calms his horse when spooked. In 'Twilight Princess' Link appears to be talking to Illia(?) When he is finished with he's ranching job at the beginning of the game.
    And lastly in Wind Waker Link yells, "Come on". I've grown frustrated over the years of folks thinking he doesn't talk. He absolutely does just that the developers want to make him more of a vessel for the audience. Times are changing, I wouldn't mind if they gave him a voicing role with dialogue but we'll see.

    I said "possible" because it could be argued that the auctioneer is actually saying the characters' names, but that would be weird because how often do we say things as if they're written with a colon? And also, it would be a bit disjointed if the auctioneer said their name and bid, and then gave a reaction in the next text box.

    I think a very important point to make is that although Link does not have audible voice lines in the games, he is never canonically a mute. It honestly really tires me out when people perpetuate this narrative, and it makes me very afraid that a Zelda movie would immediately be ruined by having him be a mute.
    I have always interpreted Link's dialogue options to be indicative of his personality. In Wind Waker, Link can catch a thief in the act. When she asks "who are you?" you can choose to say "I am an ally of justice!" - it sounds like the exact thing that Wind Waker Link would say. It is not as intrusive as him having fully voiced dialogue, but I think that it demonstrates that yes, he has a personality.
    You can also see it more recently in Breath of the Wild. When doing the sand boots quest, the man you're talking to is going off on a long winded tangent, and to progress the dialogue, you have Link say "sand boots please!" - a piece of dialogue that is more than just a "yes" or "no" prompt. Again, it demonstrates to me that Link does in fact talk canonically.
    I can go on. The DS games especially I take note of, where Link will say that he was sleepy and not paying attention to Niko at the beginning of Spirit Tracks, or in Phantom Hourglass where you can choose to insult Linebeck. It gives the player control, but I think it also reveals some of Link's character. Even further, in many Zelda games, Link will be making hand motions _while his mouth moves open and closed_ and then another character will go "What's that you _say_ ? Princess Zelda has been kidnapped?"
    And one final note, Link at least has _one_ instance of actual speaking, when in Wind Waker in the tower of the gods, he says "C'mon!" when calling the automaton statues to him.
    Am I going way too lengthy on a trivial point? Perhaps. I am just very tired of the idea that Link is canonically mute, and I'm afraid it will result in a very boring Zelda movie where Link never talks a single time, never interacts with anyone on a meaningful level, where this is little to no character. I am already not enthusiastic about the idea of a Zelda movie, but if I knew that Link didn't speak at all, it would make it much worse.

      Link is just a quiet person. He can talk but doesn't talk much or rarely. If they do a movie they need to make link quiet and talk when he needs to, it has to feel similar to the games like you mentioned. If they do a movie and he's speaking so much it would feel very wrong. Also in BOTW zelda says that link doesn't speak because of all of the pressure of being a champion and protecting zelda. He's canonly selectively mute, so he can speak but chooses not to and only at times he wants to speak.

      @@Thesilentvoice... I still think this would result in a poor story.

    I always thought the reason link never spoke was because he believed that actions speak louder than words.

    In Zelda 2, he has one line. I think his only line in an official title. “I found a mirror under the table”

    Hi Big fan. Actually link talks in a way in one of the memories in botw. Zelda is talking to her horse and says thanks to link for his advise.
