I mean...I see Kayne's passion, but a game based around his mom going to heaven doesn't sound like a game people will want to play, specially as an endless runner. That doesn't mean the idea isn't that bad. A game where you have to help someone reach heaven, maybe dealing with the fact there dead and is stuck in a purgatory like state having the desires of hell calling to them could make for an interesting game. I know its not what Kayne would want, but a game like that would appeal to more people then an endless runner.
Although thinking about it now, another good topic to talk about would be Soulja Boys run in with nintendo and his "game consoles" he was selling. Yeah...that's a topic.
Dante's Inferno does include that kind of idea. You can choose to either punish or absolve (historical) persons for their sins/doings (like Pontius Pilate or Attila). And Dantes journey has a lot to do with that as well....also being guided through hell...to try and save someone special to him.

To be honest, that's a super outlandish idea for a game: an endless runner where you guide someone's real-life mom to Heaven. What types of obstacles would you face? How would you lose? When you lose, does the mom just fall back down to earth or something? Endless runners are usually just fun & wacky arcade-style games, but such a personal game doesn't fit that style. It's pretty inappropriate really.
Yeah, and especially on mobile where serious artistic games are pretty much unheard of.

Generally, the goal in consulting with a game designer is to determine how to refine a game concept and make it better.

So it was most likely him frustrated with everyone saying no. Understandable tho the objective of the game is way too personal.

This definitely sounds more like an indie game, and changing it from an endless runner into something else would have been a good idea. The problem is that it isn't the type of game Nintendo would do, and I don't think Kanye would allow an indie dev to make - most likely needed - changes. He'd want it to be his way or nothing else. The trailer looked rather beautiful, though the concept of playing something so blatantly. personal to Kanye feels a bit... strange.
well kanye could in theory work with nintendo BUT making a song or soundtrack for a video game. I imagine that he wanted to work as a developer at Nintendo for the Only One game, but let's be honest, a game like this published by Nintendo at that time would be bombarded by criticism, especially religious

I knew about Only One but I had no idea Ye tried to work with Nintendo on it. Only One could have been a genuinely interesting game, but it seems like Kanye never had a large enough team of developers behind it and he was naive to think it was something that would mesh with Nintendo’s brand. A deeply unconventional, personal game directed by a famous and eccentric rapper just wouldn’t suit their content slate. Imagine if Nintendo’s 2017 release lineup was Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Arms and… Only One. It would have been entirely out of place. I don’t think Kanye even needed to work with any publisher to make it happen, he could easily have funded a stylised endless runner by himself.
I think he should have reached out to matt nava from journey/abzu fame, i think a thatgamecompany / Giant squid studios type game could have been a beautiful approach, i understand that it was supposed to be an endless runner but i can see the concept and theme working with them

Like Donda was originally a really holy and more happy LP (you can find a lot of leaked versions of tracks on this scrapped version "God's Country"), while Donda is much darker in tone, almost like Ye is begging to be released from a sadness

A lot of people grieve their parents.
A game that's basically metaphorically all about coming to terms with the death of a loved one is a pretty decent idea. The only downside to it is that it's not a unique or original one.
And the endless runner iPhone idea is just terrible and needs to be reworked and expanded.
The graphics for what was made is impressive and tops a lot of indies currently available, so we know he has the resources to make something

In retrospect, Nintendo dodged one of the biggest bullets ever fired at an entity, metaphorically speaking.
There’s also the odd implication that in endless runners, the player never reaches the goal meaning Donda never reaches heaven.

Honestly, this whole drama really reminds me of the history of Sonic 3's relationship with Michael Jackson, but just a bit different.
In MJ's case, he was accepted as the new music producer for the game. However, he was eventually kicked off due to the allegations surrounding him at the time, unlike Kanye, who was simply turned down from the get-go.
Of course, that story behind Sonic 3 is why there isn't a Sonic 3 port for the Switch. Because of copyright from MJ's team, Sega can't use the original soundtrack.
Anyways, just thought I'd share that little thought.
For real? I heard MJ just didn't like the way the Genesis made his music sound, so he quit working with Sega.
Kinda wrong actually, it's been stated that he left the project on his own terms because he was unhappy with how his music turned out on the Genesis, but he still allowed the use of what he made, just wanted to go uncredited. The allegations didn't begin until after he left the project, according to some Sonic 3 devs. It wasn't until the allegations where they started to try and sweep the stuff he made under the rug.

YO NEW VID. I found thomas last Monday and I've been binge watching all of his videos. He's definitely my second favorite youtuber (i have over like 50 favorites) my first being scott the woz. These videos are so clean and relaxing plus they are so god damn informative. With me being a nintendo nerd i totally vibe with this. I don't like that concept of a game brought forward by Kanye personally. It's pretty uncomfortable.
It seems like a very personal venting project, and I have a hard time believing people will be teaming up to actually do that. Or that people would feel very comfortable playing it.

I kinda get the impression that NOA, or any other regional office wouldn't have the authority really to approve that kind of project. They might be able to get a dialog going, but it would be head office in Japan that makes the decision what kind of first party projects get approved and developed. Reggie wouldn't have been able to say yes even if he'd wanted to. A 3rd party or indie studio could get their game on the platform, but the process for that is completely different. Managing that process is the job of the publisher, not NOA.
He should've said: "religious stuff is not really our thing, man, maybe find an experimental indie studio? "

At my work we have the Luigi’s Mansion arcade game. It’s a full immersive black box you sit in and use actual real poltergusts. It even has feedback you feel in your hands and you get a first person perspective inside the mansion. It even has 2 player mode. No modding needed. It’s incredibly fun having grown up with Mario and even thoroughly completing Luigi’s Mansion 3. If you ever get the chance you HAVE to play it. It’s a completely new experience.

His game may have had heart, but its concept is so generic and simple, that even Nintendo refused to give it resources. An endless runner about Kanye's Mom reaching heaven was also something Nintendo would see as problematic, not to mention that Kanye is already an extremely problematic person. Reggie knew already before the meeting, that Nintendo would stay far away from the whole concept, and far away from an unstable person like Kanye. Clearly, Sony or Microsoft must have known about this and even they didn't find a desire to work with the rapper, since they could've swooped In and said "ok, let's do this". It's not that everyone is ignoring or dissing him, it's just that his ideas are useless to most corporations.
Let's see you come up with some video game concepts since his is so "useless"

According to some sources, this all happened because one of the Kardashians had played Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS. Which is a game where you control an ANGEL that fights hordes of enemies both on the sky and the ground.
And that someone informed Kanye about the game. And talked about how they could try to have Nintendo create a similar game where the Kid Icarus character was replaced with Kanye's mother.
I’m kinda glad the game wasn’t made. I’d feel so bad for losing. Imagine telling someone you couldn’t guide their late mother to heaven.

In the 2018 game, South Park: The Fractured but Whole, there was a part where you had to help a friend of Kanye West, named Gay fish, get his mom into heaven. I think that's how it started.

The little pieces of the game that you showed do look pretty good, tbh. I'm not even really a Kanye fan (nothing against him, I just don't keep up with his stuff), but I think there is potential to that idea. If not as a game, then at least as a piece of animation.
Emotional homages as games are definitely something that can be done though. The first that comes to my mind is "That Dragon, Cancer". But I'm not sure an endless-runner type game would be the best way to go about it. I think if Kanye wanted to make Only One a thing, he should look for partners in the indie game space, rather than going straight for the big corporations like Nintendo
Well this is disappointing especially as a Nintendo Switch owner I think this game would have been amazing for visuals alone. Could have been a great side scroller.

I first thought that this was going to be about that Super Mario Warp to Level 69 song that some other rapper did back in the early 2000s.
To be fair the game doesn't exactly sound like a "best seller." I dont mean my words as shade, it just clearly has a select audience. The concept of "heaven" itself isn't even very all-including. it all sounds a little personal, a little real and a little religious for Nintendo, or any main developer for that matter. It sounds like there would be very little money in such a title, which leads me to my next point, Kanye just wants the game made. I can't blame him, it's very personal to him and I hope he gets it made eventually, but the reason companies likely won't do it for him is because there seems to be nothing in it for them. Theyre acting more than on a personal level here, they have to think of the company. There are places for this kinda thing though, this kind've game isn't for big name producers, it's a personal passion project, a runner that was meant to be a phone game. It sounds to me like the place for a game like this is Steam or the Google store, alongside the other Indie titles. If the game becomes big enough, then ask Nintendo for a console release.
Kanye was probably declined because the quality of the game itself may not have been something Nintendo felt comfortable putting their name on & they would essentially have to re-develop the entire thing which would more than likely ruin Kanyes vision entirely. I can understand both sides but I still think Nintendo should have gone with it & explained to him that the creation process/end result may not be what he had in mind. If he was still willing to go through with it, then it could have been a financial success.
There is not much to gain at all for Nintendo associating themselves with Kanye West. No reason why they wouldn't continue working on their own, successfull and artistically well-concepted games.

But arguing that far ignores the simple truth about how ridiculous such a crossover would be. Nintendo cares about their brands reputation and image. Kanye is a walking joke that they most certainly wouldn't want to closely associate themselves with.
