  • Nintendo's games seem pretty inoffensive. But there's one Nintendo game that got BANNED in the country of Iran, for pretty unexpected reasons. Just what upset the Iranian government so much?

    Primary source here: I was actually in Iran around the time of PoGo's release and distinctly remember getting the game with a VPN (even downloading apps occasionally requires one given that the App Store gets randomly blocked) and it really wasn't even fun. All I could catch were Rattatas and Pidgeys, PokeStops were generally pretty annoying to get to and the fact that the average LTE speed is around 100 KB/s really didn't help the experience either. In the end, I just used a jailbroken phone to change my location virtually and play that way.
    At the time, I didn't know about any of the stuff discussed in the video so it was really cool learning about it now. Thanks Thomas.
    As a side note, I had previously also played Ingress (Niantic's other title and the reason Iran even has PokeStops) and that was a better experience. I got to see some cool sites that I wouldn't have otherwise and it was overall more enjoyable. Still a pain to get around though and the internet speeds were dreadfully slow.

    • @connordarvall8482
      @connordarvall8482 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The ratatta problem is because the distribution of Pokemon is based on phone density. This is because Pokemon was built on Ingress' engine, which also based it's stuff on phone density. Of course, this mechanic made more sense in Ingress due to how the plot worked.

    4:14 Ensuring pokemon didn't spawn and there were no stops in high security areas would not have been that hard. They literally would just need the GIS data (basically coordinates) of those locations and use that to blacklist the areas. You don't have to check every square meter of the country, you'd just have to blacklist the areas the IRCG didn't want the game to work in.
    In fact, I'm sure Niantic does exactly that for pretty much every country it operates in.

    Yeah us switch users know what slow pace Nintendo uses when it comes to the NES and SNES apps. Trickle 1-2 times a month and it is typically games no one asked for.

    Hey, an Iranian here, (!سلام) I liked your video.
    In Iran we basically have to do a bunch of stuff like piracy and tinkering with VPNs to watch content, even to watch this video (TH-cam is blocked) since Iran has a closed internet.
    Iran isn't that great of a country with the censoring and other shit they do, the economy is so shit we had to 10x our money (Rials) and call it Toman, which is what everyone counts money by but the cash bill still say Rials and some places. Iran has a rich history but a very dark one too. Our history books are literally just boasting about our country and declaring death upon everyone else. (It's literally written in our passports lol)
    Sorry about the rant, nice video.
    (Also it's not pronounced like " I ran" it's pronounced like the "ee" in Eel instead of "I" and instead of "Ran" like the action it's "run" like the action. In Farsi it's written as "ائران".)

    One particular reason given their religious ideology has psychic powers, supernatural phenomena and Magic which is sorta taboo in the islamic faith in general. If it were legal, major changes in the pokedex entries to fit their demographic, outright pokemon exclusions, and other such things would be altered signifigantly.

    Back in the late 90s/early 2000s we in Iraq (a country next to Iran) banned Pokemon because appearantly Pokemon names meant stuff that were anti-religion
