- The Super Mario series has a TON of characters. Some of them are better than others. So, a few months ago I asked people who their least favourite Mario characters were. Here are the results.

I feel as though most of the “dislike” answers can be chalked up to “I don’t know this person, therefore I cannot like them.”
You should have added an “I don’t know” option to eliminate survey bias.
Bowser's brother was the control for that. It shows that the bias exists, but isn't as severe as the characters that got totally ratioed like Wart.

@@LuckySketches However, the way most tackled Bowser's Brother was by skipping him and that isn't useful data at all.
@@toumabyakuya It gives an indication of how many people will skip a character they don't know, and therefore if we see a similar number of skips we'll know that many people didn't know the character. If only a few, then probably not.
To be honest, even the concept of disliking a Mario character feels alien to me. Most of the time their purpose is to look funny, provide a fun fight, and maybe quirky dialogue. Hard to gather hate with so little to hate it for.

probably people doesn't know her in the Mario games series (1981-2021) Or i can say Pauline is not as hated as before.
In fact, she has many toxic fans who take Peach too serious and wish to kill her off because they think she "replaced" Pauline. Peach gets more hate than any other Mario characters.

I demand a re-vote, there was clearly foul play going on in this servey I can feel it. Especially surrounding the female character's with an overwhelmingly negative reason who I think are people who just didn't have the options to either say that they just "don't know" or "neutral".

It's because they rather like Mario more.
Mario is actually very cool and strong than Luigi at 1st but Luigi has done a lot of cool stuff at 1st while Mario is always fighting Bowser. Luigi should have been the mascot because he has done more cool stuff than Mario but eh. I guess Mario fighting Bowser is actually very cool but Luigi would be very cool than Mario because he can do a lot of things more than Mario.

Luigi literally has the most personality out of the entire mario franchise. I'm not surprised he's so popular he's a very relatable character.

There’s a big problem being that there was no neutral answer and when people don’t know a character they are most likely to vote they don’t like them, that’s definitely why wart, geno, and hellen gravely we’re super low because they are very niche. Should’ve been a “no opinion” or “I don’t know this character” answer for more accurate results

@@thebatpig8424 which is a good way to handle it, but there is not much representation in that with the final results, and a lot of people will vote even if they don't like them. The Bowsers Brother was an excellent benchmark entry for that but it was not used to improve any of the other data

I personally like the female characters. They have a certain charm to them.
Toadette: Probably one of my favorites because of her pig tales. She has a bright personality. She somehow can pulls off the girly girl look while still being sort of heroic looking.
Birdo: She’s great and probably the most unique character design. (Also she’s a villain which makes me like her more for some reason XD)
Rosalina: I love how graceful she is and they gave her a strong backstory.
Daisy: She seems cool, idk much about her.
Pauline: I really love how they added her back into Mario Odyssey as this glamorous gal
Peach: probably the most bland character due to her stupidity but idk why but I love to fill in the blanks with my own theories on why she acts the way she does.
right? it also leads me to question how come the male characters all had significant appreciation but when it came to a female character they had so many dislikes. idk it kind of bothers me

I love every female character but I'll have to disagree on what you said with Peach, She's very kind and loving towards everyone, there's been many times where Peach has the capability to protect herself and others, it's really just Nintendo being repetitive and having her get kidnapped again and again
I'm not surprised Luigi is more popular than mario. What's not to love even though he's a coward he will head into danger to save his friends. Luigi has adorable reactions and the person who voices him did a stellar job. Plus let's face it Luigi's mansion was a masterpiece from the epic storytelling, the music, the atmosphere and each ghost had a biography on how they died.
Basically the most popular characters are Luigi, Yoshi and Bowser. Knowing Mario fans that's honestly expected yet pleasant to confirm.
But toad was more popular than yoshi… hmmmmmmmm……

Mostly because Mario has a lack of personality other than being a happy go luck plumber he is. He kinda fell into the "vanilla protagonist" category.

I think one of the biggest contributors to Luigi's popularity is the fact that it's a lot easier to relate to being afraid and preservering than it is to stand against an immposible force with a generic hero stance.
... To be fair to Mario though, they have been mixing up his relationship to bowser a bit. At least, they did in Bowser's fury. No idea if they'll carry the attitude into future games but I can hope!
I think the main problem with the survey is that there are only two options for each question. Adding "I'm neutral on this character" and "I don't know this character" as options would make the data far more accurate.
So the issue is people vote they don’t like them when they don’t know a character, which is why characters like Hellen got voted down

The problem is that “I don’t like them” is a neutral answer, not a negative one like “I dislike them” or “I hate them”.

I also think he genuinely has potential. Considering how he only seems to appear in dreams (I'm pretty sure that the LoZ game in which he appeared was a dream), he could be made into a sort of a non-scary, family-friendly version of Freddy Krueger, being a character that appears regularly on people's dreams, and his role varies from dream to dream, from being a hero to being a villain. I feel like there's a lot of potential there for a very unique character.

Sometimes I wonder if Luigi receiving so much shade in the RPG games (Mario & Luigi series especially) is the result of Nintendo devs passively-aggressively sticking it to all the Luigi fans because of Luigi's huge popularity.

The options might not have been worded the best. “I like them” is a positive response. “I don’t like them” is a neutral response, not a negative one. For example, when people don’t know a character, it’s impossible for them to like the character so they say “I don’t like them.” It’s also impossible for them to hate the character, but that’s not an option on the form so you can’t tell that based on the results.
Not liking something is essentially a negative claim in English, unless you start to overanalyze the semantics.
@@jendorei Honestly I think it could be where you live. Here in New England, "I dont like it" isn't really a negative. It's more akin to "meh" or "I didn't hate it, but I didn't enjoy it"

yeah, there's so many issues i have with this entire poll. not giving 'indifferent' or 'i don't know this character' options, calling it "most popular" instead of 'most liked', not including the enemies or fludd and just weird character selection overall, etc.
people don't realise the importance of poll wording and formatting when it comes to people's answers.
The question wasn’t “most hated” but rather “least popular” so I think even taking “I don’t like them” as a neutral response is still fine.
The Mario Kart "remix" characters are generally not from RPG's. Baby Peach is the only one of those characters that originated in an RPG (being from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time).
The reason that Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina, and Pink-Gold Peach specifically get so much hate is because they all originated in Mario Kart (Baby Daisy in Wii, the other two in 8).
I think Baby Rosalina also gets some extra hate for going against Rosalina's canon younger design from Super Mario Galaxy.
Thomas - I just caught wind of your videos and I enjoy being blown away by these fun facts, you are answering many of my curiosity's growing up with Nintendo for 20+ years and what you dig up is really awesome man. I can't message that personally to you, as I don't use the Social platforms suggested, I just want to say - Keep up the good work, I'm loving these facts you throw out as you obviously do your homework.

The Wario Land games were some of the first I *ever* beat at the tender ages of 6-8. They were a godsend to beginner gamers and made me feel like such a good gamer at such a young age (the only other one I remember beating that young was Super Mario Bros. Deluxe). For that, Wario will _always_ rank higher than the neglected sporty guy who people really wanted in a platformer fighter game series.

Like I love you Waluigi, but not only is Wario an amazing character and the precursor to arguably Nintendo’s most creative era (1994-2005), he has one of the best 2D Platformer Franchises of all time (plus WarioWare, a super fun franchise and the precursor to the micro-game genre). Waluigi is still among my favorites, but Wario is just the best Mario character overall (for me, at least).

Regarding the final results, SMB2 characters, who didn't get carried over to other main series aside of spin-offs have less popularity with people.
I hate Bowser. Never forget the time he tried to melt Antarctica! Definitely surprised that he was one of the most loved characters, especially considering he is an authoritarian dictator, and a tyrant.

Don't forget those articules from website like TheGamer and ScreenRant in which they loved treating Mario like a punching bag while worship Luigi. "When Mario does something, that makes him bad. But when Luigi does that too, that makes him cool" Look, I do prefer Luigi but I still love Mario. It feels hypocritical to complain how Luigi gets treating unfairly when people do the same thing with Mario.

I think the most underrated character in the _Super Mario_ franchise is Stanley the Bugman from Donkey Kong 3 (he was originally debuted in _Green House_ for the Game and Watch before that). My man hasn't gotten another game for years and he deserves another shot.
He would be such a good player two for a Luigi's Mansion game.

Lot of hatred for female characters it seems? Hopefully most of that is coincidental, I know characters like Daisy and Birdo have been actively viewed as annoying for a long time so most people still hold that negative impression of them, but either way that really sucks :( I think pretty much all the female Mario characters are perfectly fine. I like to imagine some of the female characters from the RPGs like Vivian and Starlow have more fans, but.....

Yeah idk man, the fact that the only Koopaling people dislike just so happens to be the only woman can't be a coincidence, I don't think people are invested enough to think about her boss, most people are going to vote on them based on their designs, the fact that people dislike Daisy and Peach when they're pretty different can't really be chalked up to anything else, but most of all I'm not really sure how anyone could dislike Toadette, she's just a cute mushroom person and she doesn't even have the annoying Toad voice so what else could there be to take issue with??

My feedback is that it would have been wise to add an "I don't know who this character is" option, so we could see the overwhelming number of people who were confused by the decoy character (also might have probably relieved the "hate" on Wart, lol.) Would have been interesting to see

You should probably have thrown out all the data where people were willing to weigh in on "Bowser's Brother". It's an absolutely esoteric question I would have included in such a survey simply to gauge whether a given user's responses were genuine.
You should also definitely have included an "I don't know/care who this character is" option.
All the people who said they hate pink gold peach are obviously Nathaniel Bandy fans.
So the two things I've learned from this video are:
-The most popular Mario character is Luigi (which is understandable that man is amazing)
-The least popular Mario character is Wart
There seems to be a subset of Luigi fans who feel like liking Luigi more mean having to dislike Mario just because he is the mascot or something. I like Mario more, but I still really like Luigi. Idk how you could dislike either of them tbh.
I also like mario I think people hate on him because the parodies that put him as a jerk or psyco and then the matpat theory.

I agree completely. The problem is that when they were brought back for NSMB Wii, Nintendo promptly proceeded to over-saturate most of the subsequent Mario games with them, and people got sick of them.

The female characters being so disliked is honestly fucked up and telling of the fandom. Wendy being the most hated for no damn reason of all the Koopalings. These are the same people that ignored the female characters action figures in toy stores and made fun of their friends for picking female characters in games.
I'm guessing the reason why Wendy is disliked is because people found her annoying to fight in the games and annoying in the Mario cartoons
Every time I think about the mario cast, I just think about how they haven't done anything with them in years and it frustrates me to think about all of that wasted potential

5:12 I can see Wendy being the least popular Koopaling. If I bet there was one word a lot of people would use to describe her, it'd be "brat," whereas some of the other ones, you might use "brute", "crazy", "smart", "Roy".
6:45 NO ONE likes them. They're copy-paste clones that take up slots that could've been easily replaced with other, more unique characters like the other ones mentioned, like Diddy Kong, Pauline, or even the Broodals (who no one also likes apparently, but I digress). In games with larger rosters overall, it's not as egregious, but keep in mind that out of 30 characters in the base game of MK8, 7 of them were clones. That's more than 20%, and they cut out veterans. There's crazy, and then there's lazy. Compare that to Smash 4's 3(?) out of a base roster of 51, and they got a redemption arc. Also, babies...can be annoying, really really annoying.
Baby Mario and Luigi are ok but the others suck. I actually commit a target montage for Baby Peach in Mario Kart.
Apparently Luigi is popular with female gamers but the funny thing is though if Luigi was a real person he would not be desired by women at all, he is too cowardly, shy, awkward and way too beta. However Bowser with that dominant personality and "i don't give a shit about you" attitude would be a total Chad and extremely popular with the ladies.

For my own mental health I’m gonna have to assume birdo is the result of not knowing the character. Obviously we all know her but does the average person in their 20s really know who birdo is?

I like to think Bowser's brother (or Browser, as I call him) is the one managing day-to-day life for the wider koopa population, while Bowser acts more as a military leader and official figurehead.
Such behaviour seems to be expected of the head of the state, as one look at Bowser's ancestral fortress in Odyssey reveals the Koopa Dynasty's long history of warfare and conquest, however the inclusion of a gift shop implies that when not actively being invaded by plumbers, the citadel's role is that of tourist attraction.
Perhaps this is why Bowser's tactics always seem so relatively tame for someone in charge of a massive military power. He always aims to non-lethally terrorize those he invades while leaving the wider population completely alone. This bullying allows him to fulfill his ancestral duties as a warmonger and serve as a properly despotic role-model for his son, all while minimizing collateral.
Honestly suprising how much dislike Geno gets, given how he has the second most zealous fanbase in the community, just below Luigi.

I think it's because of his popularity, I personally got tired of hearing about him because of people constantly asking for him in Smash (this doesn't mean I hate him btw), so yeah it's pretty much the "it sucks because it's popular" thing.

It's because of how annoying , toxic and obnoxious some people were about adding him in Smash. up until Sephiroth's reveal, you couldn't go a single Smash character-reveal video without a bunch of people commenting "next character should be Geno" "Geno for Smash Sakurai" "Geno this, Geno that". it got old fast and soon just became annoying to the point where people began to hate the mere mention of Geno

@@ThomasGameDocs You should do this again, but add a “don’t know” option. I think the lack of a neutral option screwed with the results, especially with characters like Wart and Bowser’s Brother, who are perceived as hated when they’re really just unknown.
People suck, when I was a kid, my older cousin told me that Wart was Bowser's cousin (which I think he just made up) and I wanted to see a universe where both Bowser and Wart were reoccurring villains, just as how TV shows generally had a main villain but also other ones. Like say how Rescue Rangers had Fat Cat, but also Professor Norton as the mad scientist. Some people loathe SMB2, but it's a good game and I wish we could go back to that universe. I'd like to see a game with Wart as a villain and his minions going against Bowser. And since SMB2 was a game about choosing different characters with different attributes you could maybe make Bowser align with Mario and friends to take down Wart, because as we have seen, people like Bowser a lot. Also, why put Geno in a poll but not Mallow. When I played SMRPG, I didn't use Geno much but used Mallow all the time, due to certain bosses being weak to lightning or snow. But I think overall, your survey didn't actually give accurate results because people just disliked the characters they didn't know.

I have a feeling the dislike for Wendy O is from her portrayal on the Super Mario 3 cartoon. Most of the koopa kids were fairly innocuous, if a bit one note, but Wendy (under the name Koodie Pie) was an obnoxious, spoiled brat. She was very annoying in that cartoon.

It'd be one thing if it was a personality-less tool but it talks and responds to situations with a clear enough "opinion" on what's going on, giving it a personality (and yes, Robotic" is a personality. Just ask Fi from The Legend of Zelda)

Like when Mario is in prison it says "tomorrow we will do our best to resolve the situation" which seems to be it being somewhat motivating. When Bowser Jr escape with Peach after defeating Mecha Bowser you hear it go "No! Not again" implying it has some sort of worry or investment in what is going on and then finally when it breaks at the end it asks if it was helpful in its dying words, like it cares.
Like sure, I am not trying to say FLUDD is a deep, complex character or anything but it honestly had more personality that most other characters on the list.
Of course it is a game mechanic first but I honestly think it has more personality and character that Fi does to be honest. She only seems to show some sort of personality at the end of the game, yet I would 100% call her a character too.

Some of these I understand. Luigi is my personal favorite character largely due to his shy, cowardly, and awkward persona.

Waluigi being more popular than Wario is interesting. I like both equally, though I will say I am more sympathetic to Waluigi. Also his rise due to memes is not surprising
Pauline and Diddy Kong def need more love but the former is likely due to her being a more recent addition to the franchise (despite always being present)
Subjective obviously, but some of these I would genuinely love to here the reasons WHY they dislike them.
For me it’s always been Luigi, followed by Bowser, then Rosalina, then Birdo, and finally D.K. Runner ups would be Yoshi, Daisy, Waluigi, Pauline, and Kamek. I honestly love all these characters. I legit can’t hate any of the main Mario series cast because they’re just very friendly and welcoming characters. What’s there to hate?

To me daisy is also quite generic tbh. We don't know much about her. The only thing that changed is that instead of a "girly-girl" that has to personality, she's a "tomboy" that has no personality

He's confident and caring, willing to risk his own life to protect everyone (even creatures he only met seconds ago). He loves food and competition but he can be a sore loser sometimes (While his reaction to losing is different in each game, I think it fits his personality well as he's probably not used to losing). He also isn't much of a talker either. I like both of them the same tho.

That’s something I was noticing too. Especially the ones that are considered “ugly” or just not attractive. Birdo, Wendy, even Toadette. But I do think it all comes down to people saying “I don’t like them” as a neutral response for a lack of one. Cause I don’t see how anyone could like Toad but actively dislike Toadette.

Wart is off because of the lack of a “don’t know” option. Since you can’t like a character you don’t know, people will pick “don’t like” by default. If a “don’t know” option did exist, it would be safe to say that Wart would’ve been majority “don’t know.” Same could go for the Broodals, Geno, and obviously Bowser’s brother.
However, I would agree on the Female bias though. Peach, Daisy, Birdo, and Toadette are too popular for “don’t know”’s to have a significant impact on their results.
The female characters are viewed more negavite all because people find them either ugly or annoying. However they're some with different reasons:
Peach: Vanilla damsel in distress character or people being salty for rejecting Mario in Odyssey (Not realizing it was because she was feeling overwheled)
Honey Queen Bee: A random choice for a character in Mario Kart 7 despite only showing up for a weird level in both Galaxy games and replacing Waluigi
Rosalina: When she made it into 3D World and Smash 4, people where started to get annoyed at her for being overused. Tho, it could also come from Odyssey Central fans. "OoH, rOsAlInA = cRiNgE. LAUGH, DAMN YOU!"
I think Wart got the lowest results because people simply don't know him due of only apparening in Mario 2 (USA) and a cameo in Link's Awakening

I think it's pretty easy to explain why the Broodlings aren't liked. For a start, it's pretty obvious that someone high-up in the dev team told some concept artists to make "new Koopalings that aren't Koopalings because we don't want to use Koopalings", but then also gave no character direction or opportunities for character presentation (let alone development) in-game. They're basically just a collection of half-assed bosses that don't ingrain themselves with or impact the players since they're absolutely trivial obstacles that don't even get removed from the pantheon once you beat them. They're non-entities.

Yoshi scored 1st, and was generally well liked amongst all age groups! While Mario I believe was 2nd place lol
