I have listened to this one about 3 times while working at work to absorb all of it, as I am trying to loose 10-12lbs of fat while maintaining or gaining muscle. We will see how much "weight" this results in losing as I am working to build muscle at the same time, but at 5'2" I know I look and feel my best at 108-110lbs. Thanks for this post, its very informative, especially how we can sabotage our own efforts in a given weekend..... I am up for the challenge. Summer shred coming!
Thank you! I've been on a plateau for weeks and I'm "doing everything right". Your explanations really helped me think about all the components of energy budgeting. I will be watching more of your videos. Even though the number on my scale didn't change by watching this, my mindset did; which, as we know, is a very powerful influence on reaching any goal. Have a great day. Patricia
Ive lost 71Kg(156lb) So far (was 376lb) When started, Im Down too 99/100Kg (218lb) And it just came to a Sudden halt, Kinda scary when im so close, my ideal Weight is 85-90Kg (187lb-198lb) and its frustrating, But this was Words of Comfort for sure, as ive just stated Running and wight Lifting alot more. Thank you. also forgive my shitty spelling
I've been at a 500-650 cal deficit for a bit. I lost about 10lbs, but now I'm stuck. Not losing much at all. Stayed the same this week, and lost just 1/2 lb last week. So frustrating!!!!
What a great video! Thank you! I recently started cutting calories after a reverse (i did the reverse for 4 months just to speed up my metabolism - I'm not a competitor) and my weight is pretty much stuck... i'm freaking out a little bit but I may have an idea of what's going on now. I was just hoping the weight would come off faster. Do you have any input to give me?
Hey Mike, I can't find the article on Legion athletics that you mentioned at 26:00 regarding activity multipliers, are you able to provide the link? Thanks.
Hi Mike, thank you so much for the video. I personally find it super informative as currently, I am in the situation where have been cutting for weeks and suddenly stopped losing weight and instead gained some. Annoying but it is what it is. Now having watched your video, I know where perhaps I am making a mistake - just need to be careful with my food measurements, eat less and exercise more. My TDEE is 2600kcal and eating 2000kcal per day. So, trying to have a 600kcal deficit but still struggling to maintain that.
Thanks Mike - great info! One question I have - I understand that our bodies do not want to be lean, but are we sure that the body also doesn't want to gain fat? It seems like my natural tendency when I'm not dieting is to eat more and more.
Great video Mike, I aspire to share knowledge and experience with Nutrition, training, and supplements in a similar fashion. I would love to connect somehow. I'm 26 years old and have a HUGE passion for fitness and Sports Nutrition. Connecting with a mentor like yourself is my goal. I could not agree more with the science of your supplements and the transparency you preach. Please let me know if there is a way to connect with you directly.
So we know carbs absorb moisture while protein releases when cooked. Wouldn’t it be safe to say that weighing chicken breast raw wouldn’t give you an accurate weight vs when cooked? I struggle with which method to use. Sometimes a chicken breast can go from 100 gm raw to 75 gm cooked. Wouldn’t weighting raw leave you with over estimated protein calculations? BTW, love Bigger, Leaner Stronger. Also, as a pharmacist, I like that you present data for your arguments.
I think Mike is saying look for the most consistent method to weight food. Granted the true protein amount would vary with raw food depending on for example if the chicken was injected with liquid to plump it up etc. As long as you consistently measure the same way you can minimize variables in order to gauge results. I would definitely measure anything dry like rice prior to cooking. That’s the most accurate weight before water gets absorbed.
You seem very knowledgeable. Can you explain how aging factors into the weight loss equation. (If it does) I’m 49 and am trying to get back to 10% bodyfat. I have about 5 more pounds to go and it’s been very very tough. Harder than the last time. 2007. It is age or is it just in my head and I’m a pussy? Thanks man. Keep up the great work.
Hey Corey, the same underlying principles apply regardless of age. Those last 5 lbs can be really stubborn, though. Check this out: legionathletics.com/how-to-lose-stubborn-fat/
@@MikeMatthewsFitness Yeah I’m sure you’re right. The last time I got really low I was eating 1000 calories a day, lifting and running 8 miles a day to counteract the 1000 calorie consumption. I’m not that crazy these days. I can’t run that much w/o problems. I instead have been water fasting but it doesn’t seem to work when a person is already lean BEFORE the fast.
@@MikeMatthewsFitness Another way of getting lean would be to eat a normal diet, lift and just run everyday. Basically isn’t that why every boxer or MMA fighter is lean? Why even mess w the diet? I’d rather just eat and drink normally and just exercise more. Why does nobody do that?
Hi Mike , what do you think about listening to audiobooks and podcast when lifting weights or doing cardio instead of music ? The intensity of my workouts would suffer because of this ?

Lost 6 pounds first week, 3 pounds the 2nd and 3rd week........ then a damn half of a pound the 4th. Sucks! I am in a huge deficit
Great info! I always end up eating a lot on weekends. Mon - Fri... I can eat clean but the hardest part is staying consistent on the weekends. Thanks!
Awesome stuff! 👏🏻💯
I also love the tip how to manage food on a day you know you are going to a restaurant. Many great tips in this podcast.
What a great video! Thank you!

Thank you Mike. Great info.
I'm cutting right now and am seriously monitoring my calorie/macro intake.
Thank you Mike for such great detailed information and incredibly useful reality check on the maths of weight loss.
Loved it! Thank you

Arsenio Martins I’ve always wondered about this same thing as well just haven’t researched it enough to know the definitive answer.
So Mike , any type of rice , pasta or potatoes should be weighed raw straight out of the package or after cooking ?

I wouldn't recommend water fasting. That's a recipe to lose muscle: legionathletics.com/water-fasting/
@@MikeMatthewsFitness A couple water fasting videos say 96 hours before any muscle tissue will break down. I don’t know what to believe.
