Lyle McDonald on how women can improve fat loss

- In this podcast I interview the one and only...the inimitable Lyle McDonald.
Lyle is a health and fitness researcher and writer, and I have to say, one of my favorite authors in the space. He’s the first person that I found in my journey whose work really resonated with me, so it’s pretty cool to sit down and chat fitness with him.
What I like most about his work is not just that he really knows his stuff and deals with subjects very holistically, he also does a fantastic job breaking down dense, complex subjects in terms that anyone can understand.
In this interview, we talk about a subject that has consumed much of Lyle’s life for the last year and half or so, and that’s female fat loss.
Specifically, he breaks down how things differ between men and women in the realm of losing fat, and especially when we’re talking about getting really lean.
As Lyle points out, the fundamentals like energy and macronutrient balance are what they are, but the strategies that work beautifully for men wanting to get shredded won’t necessarily work as well for women.
In fact, you can count on them being far less effective, and Lyle dives into why, and what you women can do to squeeze the absolute most fat loss out of your diet and training.
I hope you like the interview!

Just want to say, as a woman, how grateful I am for this highly informative interview. Thank you so much.
I went meat-based/carnivore... increased my protein and fat intake... hair loss completely resolved, no aches or pains, no perimenopausal symptoms, 48 years young and still having regular menstrual cycles.
you could do lyl mcdonald interviews all day every day and i'd listen.
Lyle is so ridiculously knowledgeable
I'm a female fitness enthusiast & enjoy gaining insight into how women can easily & successfully diet & train esp. through all the smoke & mirrors. I find men & women's physiology & psychology approaches to fitness very fascinating. Thank you Mike for always providing quality material.
Lyle is for sure one of the best in the evidence based field. Great job interviewing him Mike.
Loved this. Explains why my strength can take a dive literally overnight--I could never figure out what was wrong with me! It has caused me to quit my training a couple of times, figuring weight training just wasn't a good fit for me. I always find my way back, but it's been frustrating to say the least. Thanks Mike for having Lyle on here, the info could be a game-changer for me--definitely buying the book once it's out!
One of the best episodes, need more podcasts on women's dieting and training! So true, everything he said!
This guy just explained my fitness/diet life to a T. The most fit i was when I was 53 (118lbs) 20% body fat, and did the IF, with Tabata/Interval training, and moderated that w/walks w/my dog, and weight training. I got my calories up to 1900 per day (I'm 5ft 1) for maintenance. Then there's now.....high carb/low fat, no IF....I'm big as a house again. I already started back on my old discipline, and am seeing positive results already. He was spot on about trigger foods as well, and how they affect some people, and others have no issue with it. This was such a great refresher on what I already knew works for me, and has given me the encouragement to listen to my own idividual cues: diet and fitness combined.
THE BEST PODCAST YET!!
I look out for Lyle's interviews because he's always absolutely on the money with his information and advice. But, I also always look forward to at least one thing he'll say that will have me pmsl. This interview did not disappoint.
Mike I'm usually a big fan of your podcast and work in general, and this episode in particular was tremendously interesting for me. Thank you so much, and I'm totally looking forward to Lyle's book!
Great to see an interview with Lyle! Such an icon!
Thank you Mike! I've been needing this video my whole life.
That part about flexible dieting was just on point.
This. Was. AMAZING! Thank you gentlemen for being so diligent in your research and sharing your information. As a woman, I applaud you. I bought the women book and I can’t wait to delve in!
Such an interesting interview, Lyle is an epic guru.
14 minutes in, still hearing only information on the "why" when do they start talking about the "how" as in how women can improve fat loss??
Thank you for this interview. Please feature Mr. McDonald again. Wow!
Thank you SO MUCH for this video interview! This has been eye-opening and overdo. This is the most helpful/useful information I've heard to date.
Thankyou. Now I understand my girlfriend better. I suggest she eat more protein then she eats a bowl of Raisin Bran to feel better. Stay Strong. 🏋🏻💕
This was amazing - thx for doing this Podcast Michael. Very informative !
Love Lyle's work, and this was a fantastic interview, thank you so much Mike! The physiological differences between men and women and how that applies to training and nutrition is def an under talked about topic, IMO. Would have been great to hear more about syncing training and diet with the menstrual cycle for increased fat loss/general metabolic health - Imma have to look into his book! :=)
Thank you so much for this! Really looking forward to the strength training one.
I do enjoy all of your podcasts but these two last are pretty damn cool !
Please don't interrupt the person you are interviewing. Two ears & 1 mouth for a reason... 😉
WHEN is that book coming out?? it's been ages.
That was so helpful , answered so many questions!!! You are awesome Mike.
Just one thing I need clarification on if you would be so sweet to answer.......
Can't drop anymore fat as my metabolism has slowed too much and I've hit my lowest 1200cals and 6x wk Cardio and 5x wk weights.
I get it now and I realize I need to slowly reverse calories back up and cut Cardio too.
Cardio - how do u slowly cut it down from 6x 30mins a week without gaining weight? I am afraid if I increase my calories by 100 each 10 days and drop a session of Cardio a week that I'll gain fat which I really don't want to as worked so hard to get lean and am still at 18% bf as a woman and want to drop a bit more.
What's your recommendation on reversing out of Cardio? How slow specifically can it be and do u recommend simultaneously adding calories too.???
Thankyou so much for reading this! I hugely appreciate you taking the time.
Cheers,
Naomi
Very interesting, good pod cast
Lyle and Mike are two of the best! I'd love to hear how women can use a surplus as a set up.. we are often afraid it will become a set back and we don't have a clear idea of how to work with it since our muscle builds slower. Specifically how many rest days! I feel more physical fatigue now that I am trying to bulk and training with progressive overload vs the feels I had in a deficit with similar trainning lifting and more cardio
thank you for the link!!
Top mind in the field.
Super interesting stuff as always
Golden Knowledge ! :)
Thank you for doing this interview Mike! Do you have any info about how the birth control pill could affect muscle growth in women?
Note to self: 🎶 Loud music at the end-listen when fully awake.
Is Lyle's book out yet?
when is this book coming out?
im 20 years old, 5ft6 and weigh 165 pounds. i train 5 times a week, 3 weight training sessions including legs, back and upper body and i mix it up with hiit cardio and long steady state cardio about 4-5 times a week around 20-30 mins max. i eat around 1500 calories a day sometimes a little lower because i just find it hard to eat, im not always hungry so i dont know what to do about it. my macros are 155 grams of protein, 136g of carbs and 40g of fat but i find it so hard to hit the protein. most im able to do is 110-125g. my question is, do i really need that much protein? im not sure if im eating too little because i do cardio and lift really heavy and some days dont even hit 1500 calories any information or help regarding this would be helpful. my goal is to also lose weight, i've lost 14 pounds so far and put on a bit of muscle. fat i find hard to get rid of so i've tried intermittent fasting
Maybe try lifting an xtra day or two and maybe cut down the cardio to 3-4 days only hiit. ??? When I first started out I did the same as u but I've found that my body responds better to more weight training. I had to build up my muscle to lose more fat, and cardio was being counterproductive
I know this post is old but I think you would do better to low your protein, increase fat., and decrease carbs.
Excellent
i found his ideas a bit much.. ott..but made sense some..mike your great as always
I havent had my period in 3 months....im 40...vegan/vegetarian , not on any meds, carb loaded, and in a calorie deficit and am still lifting my normal heaviness. I wonder what my hormones are up to?
You need to eat protein and fat from animals - you're body is sick and shutting down. Listen to it.
Stop interrupting your so unpleasant when you do that
Lyle
Could you interrupt Lyle more?
Interview with Lyle McDonald for fat loss, how ironic.
Luke is very Smart but needs to take breath. Sheesh!! Very informative though.
Ayy Ohh Mike! But this guy can talk, ha? He doesn't let you get a word in edgewise. Does this guy come up for air or what? Sheeze...
What's up with Diet Coke?lol
what about diet coke ?
because diet soda sucks..lol
I'm genuinely confused by this guy. Does he work out at all himself? I really don't understand how he is considered a fitness guru.
All his "science" is pseudo-science based on actual studies which are far less conclusive than he tries to present them. He is pretty good at getting into his clients heads however. His thoughts about the psychology of weight loss and how to motivate people to stick to their diet are valuable and are what makes him a famous coach. Any basic diet will work - the hard part is to get ppl to stick to it.
You can't be serious.
Antonio Wright Who can't be serious? BTW, I grew up in Bowie!
Lol man, accusing lyle's work as a pseudo-science is like telling to jesus "nah he doesnt know shit about christianity" xD He roasted you on social media didnt he?That just smells like butt hurt.
Judging someone's knowledge of physiology or nutrition on their physique is a terrible lapse in judgment. Check out his website, he's been writing articles with citations for years.
On Lyle's book he uses a model on cover. Lyle works out so how come he is not on cover? Fro a guy who lifts he looks like he has never touched a weight so why should anyone listen to him?
I am not judging him just asking a valid question. It's all genetics really I think that is why he looks so under developed.
That's not the same thing. Lyle's webpage says if you lift you will gain up to 50 lbs of muscle over a 5 year period. I know he lifts so why did he not gain that much? He looks like he never touched a weight in his life. I have lifted for just over 5 years and did not come even close to that number. NO ONE is more consistent with diet and exercise than me. Genetics then age are very important. That's I don't listen to him anymore. I used to be on his forum. Those numbers will be different for everyone.
Proving my point that's genetics, His calves are large you say but his upper body is very poor. Genetics. At his website he says how much muscle you will gain period, does not take genetics into it. I followed his instruction in the past and it did not work. That's all I am saying. As far as me watching, I watch lots of Bodybuilding sites and comment when they seem to be wrong.
I did not watch the video, just a few minutes of it. Like I said I was on his forum and took his advice for building muscle, It was wrong, did not work for me or Lyle. NOT everyone will build that much muscle, that's all I am saying. FYI there are lots of fitness gurus out there that all seem to have the same advice, and depending on your genetics they will work to a point. Also I never said you should not listen, do what you like. Hope that is solved for you.
They are not random vids. I commented without seeing 1 and half hours of McDonald because I have been on his website for a while and tried his suggestions. That is why I asked the question why if he works out and I am assuming he follows his own advice, why does he not have that 40 to 50 lbs of muscle, Which is what he his website says. . I am not sure why this bothers you, I am always respectful when I comment. I have asked mike matthews that question, no reply. When i asked Lyle about why he did not build muscle he never replies. The reason I ask is not to pick on him but if his suggestions don't work on him maybe that is why they did not work on me. It helps me to understand if I did something wrong or if it is genetics like I think.
