Buying The Cheapest Cessna 210 In The World & Flying It 1,000 Miles Home!

  • We bought a 1964 Cessna 210 for $27,000 and proceeded to fly it 1000 home across the country. This is by far the cheapest Cessna 210 in the country, and one of the cheapest flyable piston single airplanes too! We bought this plane sight unseen after it's been sitting for years on end, for the most part. Will it make it home without any issues? There is a reason this plane was so cheap, you will see in today's video.

If you're in Pecos ever again, borrow the courtesy car and cross I-20 to the north, head west on the frontage road to Bickley and turn north, find the Burrito Depot on the right hand side of the road. Small family owned, very good.

And it’s about age too. I recently sold a nice 37’ Tartan sailing yacht for well under market value to a nice younger couple. They will appreciate it. I wasn’t using it enough and didn’t want to have a`mother season of insurance, dockage and maintenance. Mechanical things hate to just sit. I have made good money on past boats and just decided to sell quickly. They lucked out and I felt fine with it.

Get your mechanic to look over that landing gear really good, especially the truss mounts. Those are notorious for cracks and are expensive to replace.
Also, while it's up on jacks, do the Uvalde gear door mod. It basically eliminates the rear gear doors, reduces weight, and drag. No doors extending out into the wind during extension and retraction. For the mod, a clean looking hole hole is cut into the outter, gear doors for the wheel to go through and the door is riveted onto the airframe as a panel. Probably the most popular mod on 210s.
Oh, if you get GamiJectors, be careful running those on that older IO-520. It'll run a little hotter than factory with Gamis. Run them a littke richer than what the book recommends and the engine will last well past TBO.
I say you got a good (should say lucky) deal if there's little to no corrosion on the airframe and no metal in the oil or filter screen.
The D model is a good rugged 210. Strutted Centurions are essentially faster 206s with lots of load hauling capability.
When you tuck the gear up and level out in cruise, it'll give you 160 knots at 65% power all day long with that McCauley 3-blade prop.
Panel is pretty nice too for it's age. Nice interior too.

This one already has the mod, which usually indicates it has had a gear-up landing. I personally hate the Uvalde mod, as well as any mechanic that actually knows 210's. Realize you can tell if it has the mod just by looking at the nose gear doors, they stay open after the nose wheel is down, and add extra drag. Also, the holes at the mains add drag.
He said they lose around 20kts with the gear down. I lose 6-8 kts on my L model with the doors. My partner flew for an hour before realizing he had left the gear down. My friend has a 1 Model M with the Uvalde mod and a 40hp more powerful engine. Mine flys faster than his with less fuel burn. He was not a believer until he flew across the country in mine.
Paul New and John Efinger are the 2 experts on 210's and both say to never do the Uvalde mod. It doesn't fix anything, it doesn't make the system better. It only hides the fact there is a problem with the system when the doors are gone. If I walk out and see my doors open, I know I have a pressure issue. Once you do the Uvalde mod, you won't know until you try to put the gear up, or down.
The N model removed uplocks and the main doors (Cessna adopted the Uvalde Mod), and uses hydraulic pressure to hold the gear up, so it is the simplest system of any 210's, which does equate to less maintenance.

    • @bobwhite3647
      @bobwhite3647 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

Removing the gear doors increases drag, loses a few knots. Also doesn't lower weight much or lessen single-point-of-failure much. It is only done because to the uninitiated it looks like a newer model.

Curtis Judd says "normalize the audio to -24db" So many videos have loud, music, audio (like 30 db louder than the voice track right before it) for the "cinematic" cuts.

Those days no intercom, no A20's no EFB's and not much complex airspace. I think you guys did a very good deal. Engine is good, prop looks newer, interior and exterior in good shape. Aside from the usual stuff I suspect the only thing that might give you fits is the hydraulics and gear components. For what you paid thats very acceptable risk. BTW thanks for helping me relive my early days of aviation.

    • @jarrettleto

Its honestly what these planes are worth. Ancient panel, landing gear issues, lost log book. I applaud the owner for actually selling it for what its worth so JR can fix it up! When I was looking for a plane there were so many planes like this where the owner would do the old "I know its worth more than that" when referencing the $150k plane with a $80k more expensive panel, full logs, and new paint/interior. I would try to explain to them all the work they would need to do in order to get it to sell for that price and they'd just be stubborn. 2 years later same planes are for sale with only minor price decreases. Either restore the plane, or let it go to a new owner that will. These planes are old now and you basically have to be a caretaker of the plane to keep in in good shape, if it starts sitting or corroding too long the value drops rapidly IMO.

The cheapest 210 on controller is a older one with way more hours on the engine is 160k with shittier avionics....the log books do hurt it but he could get this thing in annual and could sell it instantly for like 145k.

The two small rear seats are not legal to use unless you change out the slip lock seat belts. Great find. Makes me miss my old 210

My father owned a 1976 210L for 35 years. Excellent plane that hauled our family of 5 all over the US. Two suggestions for you. Invest in a shoulder harness installation for at least the two front seats. Also the GAMI fuel injectors were definitely worth the peace of mind and saved $$$ at the fuel pump. We routinely saw 160 knots true on 12.5 GPH at 8,000 to 9,000 msl. The main issue with those 60s model 210s is the gear saddles that tend to crack and lead to gear collapses. Otherwise that should make for an excellent cross country machine!

Buy a Garmin 650 (ADSB & NAV/COM), GMA 342 because that old audio panel is hard to work, GTX 345 Transponder (ADSB in/out), personally I like the Garmin G5's but the 275's are nice as well, and you might as well just get the GFC500 autopilot because its so easy to operate. Also, the JPI900 engine monitor.
Overall, its a little early to judge if its a Great purchase. Engines that don't run a lot tend to hide their problems. I really hope you don't find any. Definitely a good purchase and good find. Good Luck!

If you can, put an oil filter mod on it and switch to an alternator conversion kit. I did all this to our 1947 Bonanza 35.

Fly it for a couple hundred hours to start to "rebuild" the log books. Dueing that time you can start to make nice upgrades. Hopefully the io-520 holds up (rebuilts in a box are $64k). The 210 isnt a hot seller right now but again, i think if you can demonstrate reliability with some log book entries maybe you can get her up to $80k. With some radio upgrades, GPS etc.... PS. You guys couldve gone without headsets and just used the intercom had you not figured out the radios. A little loud yes, but not the end of the world. Another PS; gotta 69 Bonanza 36 thats also sat for a while out of annual, lost logs, trying to figure out what to do with her. Beautiful airplane, but some black eyes

Should really bring a certified A&P with you guys before you fly out in a plane like that. That fuel pump failure was a sign look at it that way

They were very lucky a failure like this happened on the ground. Sketchy maintenance logs and potentially sketchy maintenance should get more than a quick once over. Lucky has a way of running out at the worst time.

Cool! I bought and sold about 30 210's and 96Y seems familiar, Was it blue and white before? I can offer some tips on what to watch out for on old 210s if you are interested. After a couple of gear extension issues, one where an ATP friend and I literally reached out both sides and yanked the mains into lock due to low hydraulic fluid on early engine driven Hydraulic pump models, I strongly suggest you always check the Hydraulic fluid level in the sight glass on the pedestal in flight on every flight as it takes more fluid to retract the gear, than to extend it, and when extended it may show full when low. Also, carry a bottle of 5606 and an pump oil can with a hose to pump fluid in if needed.
After a "manual' gear extension hanging out the open doors due to a leaky actuator that the manual hand pump could not extend, I devised and emergency kit consisting of a socket wrench to remove the Hydraulic fluid sight glass in flight, as brass hose fitting and a hose to screw in where the sight-glass came out, and and modified cap and hose fitting I could screw into a quart bottle and squeeze fluid into the reservoir, if needed, as if an actuator seal fails you might pump out fluid faster than the hand pump can extend the gear but the engine driven pump can overcome. That way I figured I could dump enough fluid to get the gear down if the hand pump didn't manage.

@@mickdee6590 Thanks, happy to share what I can. Something else for those considering a 210 that has had the gear doors removed, is exhaust infiltration through the aft cabin and baggage compartment. Once the rear doors are removed the low pressure laminar low on the outside of the fuselage is disrupted, and large amounts of exhaust gasses can be pulled into the cabin.
A good friend who had a gear door removal done on his 67' T210 , and after cruising at 18,000ft on 02 for several hours, and he and his wife suffered severe carbon monoxide poisoning and ended up hospitalized, It's a wonder they made it back alive. I went to Palm Springs to bring the airplane back to Oregon, suspecting the gear mod could have been the reason, and when I and a mechanic lifted the carpet that was covering the gear well we found it saturated with carbon and white lead dust. We sealed as much of the aft cabin with aluminum adhesive tape and silicone RTV, and I flew back with the cabin air and vents open and had no issues.
If yiou look at the later model 210s that came without gear doors the gear wells are well sealed with an inner box plates.

The words, " if it sounds too good to be true then it is, " would apply here I believe. $27,000 for 210 tells me that one of several conditions is in play. One, that the aircraft is due an annual. Two, that the aircraft engine is probably perilously close to an overhaul. Unless you are independently wealthy, this is just not a good buy. If you've got the cash to pour into this black hole then by all means. Revamp and restore it but don't think that you going to buy this kind of aircraft for $27,000 without a bunch of gotchas waiting for you.

So stoked for this video. I have a 62 210B with a very similar setup. Can’t wait to see what you guys do to improve this early centurion. Awesome deal on that plane. Obviously the hydraulic gear is scary for a ton of people, but a properly maintained system can be reliable and work well. Mine still has gear doors and has been lovingly cared for and continues to be a champion of a machine.
