  • We just bought an abandoned plane for $16,000 that has been sitting since 2015. Will we be able to save it? Watch us attempt a first start after 8 years. It will be a lot of work to get this plane back in the air, but it will happen. It's a 2006 Zodiak 601XL SLSA factory built by AMD. This plane will make for a big profit flip if we can get it all sorted out on a budget. Oh yea, it has no logbooks or paperwork :)

    I’m not a pilot, just a wannabe. I think this is a perfect plane for the both of you. You clearly have the means to be able to afford this risk. If, as I suspect, you’re able to get it airworthy, it will make an excellent time builder for both of you to get you certification. If you use both this and the 172 and take your check ride in the 172, you will be on your way. Good luck and fly safe.

    Another trick you could have done was taken two 2x6’s and bolted them down across on the front of the trailer with them sticking over the edge enough for the wheels to sit on and with enough gap for the wheels to sit between them and strapped them down good and tight. Food for thought on your next purchase. I just picked up a Stinson from Missouri to Michigan and had to modify the trailer with that method and worked great. Great find!!!!

    Congrats on the purchase, very comfortable airplanes. You mentioned wanting to do upgrades a number of times in your video. Remember that SLSA aircraft are certificated under ASTM standards which REQUIRE a Letter of Authorization from the manufacturer for any deviation from original equipment or repairs that are not specifically described in the aircraft maintenance manuals. While the new AMD is supporting these 601's, you might want to consider moving yours to an ELSA. There would be two benefits in doing that, first you could deviate from original equipment. Second, after taking a 16 hour course getting your Light Sport Repairman - Inspection (LSRI), you could perform your own maintenance including the Condition Inspection. Good luck! Will enjoy watching your videos.

    • @raymondo162

      "you could perform your own maintenance including the Condition Inspection" that's really not the best idea imo

    • @jsmutny
      @jsmutny 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@raymondo162 The beauty of S/ELSA aircraft being built to ASTM standards is the requirement of very detailed maintenance documentation. There is no expectation of using the 43-13 to interpolate work, it has to be laid out (unless the 43-13 is called out in the documentation). As long as you follow the documentation, it's hard to screw up.

    I am a Small Airplane guy, so this video was great. The length was fine, and content was very good, for me.
    Not much of a Jet fan, interesting, but I am turned off by the extreme costs to buy, and maintain a Jet.
    And the REGULATIONS for aircraft is suffocating! Sure, Safety is indeed important, but regulations, as in other things, is incredibly confining, and not always for safety reasons.
    I do enjoy the search and the finding of Cars and Planes that are Gems that needs some polish and a bit of TLC, and they come back to life. Like this airplane, semi-abandoned, sitting for years, and could be had for a small amount of cash. A Good story with a good ending.
    Thumbs up!

    I just bought a Kitfox Lite for 9K. Set for 5 years and started up no problem. Uship mover could not put it in his trailer so I went out and bought a trailer for $2,200 in like new condition. Shipper was going to charging $1,900 so i really only paid $ 300 for the trailer. Kitfox has folding wings and fit on trailer with no problem. I love this little plain 😍. I am getting ready to fly it soon😎. If you haven't seen a kitfox lite go to TH-cam and check it out. It has bush tires and looks good after I finish it I will post it on TH-cam It is a Ultra lite part 103 no license to fly. Regards; Phillip

    I taught a guy to fly in one, he bought new for $108k. His was a factory built Zodiac 601. Great little plane, it was a LSA, not the SLSA. Had dynon avionics. Be careful of the canopy, you have to insure it double clicks locked. There’s a tale of someone falling out after trying to reclose it after it popped open in flight. Scary. Great flying little plane. I’ve got some videos on my Facebook page of it.

      The tale of the guy falling out, as I recall is he was a passenger and had a CFI flying who never flew a 601 and was unfamiliar with how sensitive they are in pitch.
      Anyways, as the story goes the passenger exited the plane before taking off and when he got back in, didn’t fasten his seatbelt or harness.
      The canopy did pop open in flight (when it does it only opens about 6” but makes a hell of a racket), it startled the CFI who made a significant pitch down and in so doing the unsecured passenger experienced negative g’s and exited the aircraft

    In the U.K. under (microlight or permit) aircraft, it’s advised and sometimes mandatory to install an isolation switch from the Earth X battery. They are of the highest in quality but should a lithium battery go faulty there is a risk of fire and you need to isolate it (turn it off) from the cockpit so I would definitely fit one and it’s easy to do.
    Glad to see the story unfolding in longer content :)

      Other thing is that lithium batteries have a much lower internal resistance. You can't just replace an old lead-acid for risk of overloading/blowing-up alternator.

    • @comedicsketches
      @comedicsketches 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been building these for a while in various configs and chemistries and if the battery itself has a fault isolating probably won't do much. Of course isolation is useful if something else draws too much current. Blowing up an alternator is very unlikely (among other things we use these on motorcycles with extremely small alternators) and keep in mind the lead acid batteries used for starting vehicles also have very low internal resistance--it's a main design criteria and they're specifically built that way as a tradeoff vs capacity. The main difference is the per-cell voltage difference between lithium and lead acid giving lithium vehicle batteries a volt or two extra at rest depending on the chemistry, and this generally isn't an issue.

      @kieranshanley7365 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@snorttroll4379 Sure - the flying surfaces on a plane deflect into the air stream to make the plane move. Whenever something moves there is always another force opposing the movement. Flutter is a condition where these up and down movements of the control surfaces get bigger and bigger and can eventually cause damage and in the worst case can take the wings off a plane. Originally the 601 was designed without weights added to the control surfaces to damp these oscillations- the design relied on tension in the control cables. There were a spate of in explained 601 in flight breakups and the theory was that flight control oscillation was the cause. A relatively simple fix was to modify the control surfaces and add counterbalance weights to act as further insurance against this problem. Hope that helps.

      The mods to the 601 xl were much more than balancing the control surfaces including beef up in the wings and fuselage. As a dar I was forbidden from certifying a 601 until it was modified with a kit from zenith to bring it up to 601xlb status. Some of the failures involved the factory built 601xl’s.

    With the exception of your oil not changing to new oil plan, it's a great video. I would have used new oil to fire it up and warm up to clean out the system, then change it again while hot. 16k for a plane, what's another 50$? seriously.

    Great video! I’m actually very impressed at JR garage level of involvement and all the little things. I kind of had this thought that you guys were just the money and everyone else did the work watching you slave over a $16,000 purchase says a lot about your work ethic, especially since you appear to have several million other purchases

    Its not a Lithium Ion battery...its a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. There is a huge difference. So many TH-camrs now are causing issues and spreading inaccurate information because they keep saying Lithium like they are all interchangeable. They are not. Learn the characteristics of each type and chemistries therein and get their names right. Sponsor would probably appreciate it too.

    My Dad was a pilot, even working for Boeing for a few years.
    I've flown hundreds of hours over three decades in the right hand seat, strictly as a passenger.
    This was in both private and corporate aircraft, both in the U.S. and abroad--but never felt like getting licensed and buying a plane.
    You may have ruined me now! I really like that plane and this process.
    Best regards,
    Todd

    I hope it’s the xl-B model. The wings on the standard 601 had a spar that would fail in moderate turbulence when at gross weight.

    that was crazy! I used to fly all the time when I was your age. Haven’t flown for at least 10 years now. After retiring we didn’t have the money to do it anymore. But I guess you know what you’re doing buying planes, I wish I knew what you know. I’d love to be able to afford to get a little plane like that. It was a great video. I watched every minute of it.

    That's a great video. I'm delighted to see you get it home and running so soon. I'm considering the same thing with a factory build 2006 LSA. It's been in a hanger for more than ten years but should have all documentation. The biggest problem is that it's more than 4000km from home. Do you pull it apart and tow it home like you did or fix it and fly?

    About 40 years ago, I learned to fly in Grumman AA1B and AA1C 2-seaters with sliding canopy. The Trainer version had a climb prop, the TR-2 version had a cruise prop.
    This plane looks almost identical at a glance, just lacking the sliding canopy which could be flown closed or locked halfway open. The wings look the same, and even the standard 11 gallons usable in each wing is identical. The Grumman was faster and heavier. It also had intentional spins prohibited like this one. Basically, by the time you spun it 270 degrees, it was unrecoverable and you're dead. So, doing stall practice was a good time to be really paying attention and making no mistakes.

    I bought a 73 piper Cherokee - sight unseen - for $19,500 ten years ago. It only had 215 hours on a new engine and I had numerous conversations with the mechanic who had maintained the plane for the decade prior (a retired Piper factory A&P/AI from the Vero Beach plant) so I knew it was in great working order. We hopped in it and flew it 2000 miles from PA to WA without a hitch and it's been a great plane. Although I don't recommend this the fact remains you can find some crazy deals if you are patient.
