  • We bought a heavily modified Cessna 182P Skylane! We bought this plane basically sight unseen and plan to fly it home 700 miles! It has the 300HP "air plains" fuel injected engine conversion along with some STOL mods, so it is a beast! Go to brilliant.org/... to get a 30-day free trial + the first 200 people will get 20% off their annual subscription
    This plane is an ex reconnaissance spy plane used by California law enforcement. It has countless mods and was a deal we couldn't pass up. Should we mod it more? Train in it? Upgrade the interior? The 182 skylane is one of the best GA piston singles money can buy. On this first flight you'll see just how comfy it is and how easy it is to fly!

    You really scored with this 182. I have a tons of hours on one 182Q with the Texas Skyways STC which is almost the same as yours with the difference of that one was still carbureted, with the 3 blades Hartzell prop, that plane was a beast, on a hot day, full gross weight it was still able of climb 500 to 700 ft/min and at 10000 ft at cruise power was able to get 150 TAS, IAS was just right to the yellow arc. We had it with standard tires and the boots, so maybe yours is going to be a little bit slower because of the drag from the big tires, but either way you’re going to love and enjoy it. Congrats guys

    I'm currently maintaining a 1961 Fastback 182 with a STOL kit. You won't see 300' takeoff rolls, but 400' should be easy. Congratulations! The 182 is an amazing aircraft. We just installed a brand new 245 hp. O-470 in her, last fall. Which is great, but yours is a frigging monster! You're going to see 1,300-1,500 fpm climbouts! Congratulations!!!

      Nice, yes maybe 400 is more realistic, I saw a lot of opinions and results online. This thing climbs like a homesick angel.

      @@JRAviation, you did GREAT getting this well-maintained, upgraded 182! We had to settle for the 245 O-470 as the 500 series more than he wanted to spend, and the new O-470 was expensive enough. To get one already done, well, big congratulations and I hope you guy fly her well, often, and enjoy the hell out of her!
      I'll bet with one aboard, low density altitude, and half fuel, she might pull 1,500-1,600 fpm on initial climbout, if you can stand the angle. -Personally, I love it!

      I ferried a ‘61 out of Colorado a few years ago to Florida and still get to fly her on occasion. Such an amazing airplane. The Sportsman kit is awesome for short field performance but it along with the tires will definitely put a dent in the overall cruise TAS. Enjoy the plane!

    I ordered the FFA airworthiness file on this aircraft 5 or so years ago after nightly orbits over my town. I wanted to know who it was and what it was capable of. In the early history of the aircraft it looks like a drug seizure, so a bad guy plane turned good guy plane.

      Sac County? Who had it? Paint was new in 2002, and if it was CHP I would think it would be blue and gold stripes instead of the green and gold. So I am thinking it was a county that owned it since pretty much every county in the state uses green.

    Nice 182! I have a 182P with the 285hp O520, sportsman STOL and VGs. I highly recommend adding the VGs. They really don’t affect stall speeds (if you have the sportsman wing) but they do greatly improve rudder and elevator authority as slow airspeeds. You are probably landing at full up trim with that setup, and in a crosswind at landing speed you will definitely notice the rudder needed. Add the VGs and you will see a big difference! Have fun and keep up the Avation videos!

    I owned a 2014 Cessna 182T Skylane. A little trim back on the yoke at 20 ft. to landing makes a big difference in the roll out. (you mentioned "nose heavy" on the first landing.) Just remember to take it out for touch and go's. I have a few "muscle moments" pushing the yoke forward on climb outs at first.

      @@terrypedersen7 Does it make that much of a difference? Obviously take off performance would be impressive, but what about cruise?

    • @terrypedersen7
      @terrypedersen7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jessegunderson2605 I don’t think you would see a huge difference as it’s strictly a horsepower difference at similar settings. Technically the 550 is an improved version of a 520 if flown properly. Meaning if you provide enough fuel on takeoff the engine will treat you well. If not it’s going to eat cylinders. So I should qualify my pushing towards a 550. It would be important in my opinion if I were buying a plane with a 550 (or 520 for that matter) to ensure that it has a good engine monitor in it and download the data to see how it has been flown.
      Also I would check the version of either engine to verify the TBO. Could make a difference in the long run and a consideration on why one might be more than the other.

    My experience with STOL planes is, you tend to pay for it in cruising speed, especially a Cessna which is factory slow to start with, and adding HP will not really change it much. At least the basic weakness of 182 , the weak nose gear are taken care of. I noticed the cruising speed is the one spec you avoided mentioning. If you use it in a lot of hot and high places, I am not sure if the turbo is a better way to go than to just add HP.

    Great plane. The big sightseeing window is useless for you guys. It’s for observation on border controls or fire watching. To use it for filming or photography it should be open. As you want to redue the interior, seating and side panels, you should bring the 182 to origin without this useless window. If you put the rear seats in, non pilots passenger will feel uncomfortable for sure. So it makes so sense to keep the window for good comfort. The avionics style should be the same layout as in the Bonanza, so you have the same look and feel, and can use both intuitive. That makes sense too. I guess you will keep the Bonanza and the 182. So the invest is on the right spot to do. The 182 will be perfect as a mountainside and back country plane. So have fun and enjoy. And for you flight training in my opinion the 182 is 100% capable too. 😊

    Looks like a great, well maintained, airplane Jeff. I approve. Lol. Is this 182 a retractable? Owen is the man. He makes flying look effortless. I hope that Jeff is wracking up some flying time.

    They arent really fuel injected, more like individual carburettors. Its just a constant supply of fuel at the intake port, not sequential. Technology that was obsolete by 1920.

    How did you come upon this deal? Was it through inside channels, or a public posting?
    While this additional question might seem unimportant, Im curious how buyers do the logistics of going to even look at a plane. It seems if youre ready to buy youll always need a second person to drive/fly the car/other plane back home, etc. Renting a car one-way to go buy a plane can cost close to $1,000 if its long distance. So how did you guys do this aspect?

    How much does an A/C of this age and condition with the 300 hp normally cost? My son wants to be a pilot so he can fly from Florida to Texas with 4 people total.

    Why am I reminded of used car salesmen? Is everything amazing? It’s an old steam gauge 182. Yes, great plane but let’s not get the vapors over it.

    I would strongly give the advice to do you private training in an aircraft that talks back to you, which typically means something more light weight. Honestly, tailwheel, even better. 182s are great, but they won't let you know what you're doing wrong with the inputs, they'll just truck along.

    • @9HighFlyer9

      The military produces plenty of pilots that spend almost no time in anything smaller than a T-6.

    • @ca_pilot
      @ca_pilot ปีที่แล้ว

      @@9HighFlyer9 I think that’s great preparation for flying high powered jets. Never flown a T-6 but I assume that it requires a lot more finesse than a 182, which flies like a bag of peanuts. That said, not saying this is the end or the world, lots of people have learned to fly in 182s it’s fine (the wording “strongly advice” was not the best wording on my part), but just saying its not the ideal platform for developing stick and rudder skills.

    • @9HighFlyer9
      @9HighFlyer9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ca_pilot I agree there are better options. Comfort is important though. At 6'6" there aren't a lot of small trainer options for him. I have really broad shoulders. I will not fit in a 152 with anyone larger than a 3rd grader next to me so I understand wanting a plane you fit in a little better.
      I do feel strongly that the 182 makes a fantastic instrument trainer.

    If possible would convert that rear window back to a proper metal side panel. Not very comforting for passengers in the back to look straight down.

    • @JRAviation
      @JRAviation  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s actually super cool to be seated back there (as long as you’re not scared of heights).

    • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JRAviation yes but that’s relative. I have a bush plane with full glass to the bottom floor. Not afraid of heights but if I’m in the teens, it’s a little unnerving to look straight down. Plus the glass flexes a lot and let’s in more hot sunlight, etc.. it’s just more comforting to have a little bit around you. Obviously, the cost could affect the practicality of reverting it.
