This is not the type of rally I thought this was building up to, surely a roll cage is overkill for road driving at speed limits!
I was thinking more sliding around corners in the dirt and less driving slowly through villages

Not really a restoration done he kind of ruined it with pointless mods, like a cage, harnesses and rally lights on a street car that will never break the speed limit. These “classic rally” cars are basically the elderly European equivalent of riced our Hondas

The commute I make on a daily basis in my classic Mercedes is more of a rally than this... I’ve loved the series though!

That looks like miserable 1200 miles... whats the point of all the work done to the car if all you do is drive slowly with the clock?
Exactly. The roll cage and racing harnesses are just stupid and pointless on a street car that’s just going to do the speed limit.
As they said multiple times: it's easy to stay at zero on the straight roads, but it's hard to keep up with time on the twisty bits, so drivers won't be so careful when they have to catch up a few hundred meters (standing still at crossroads also adds time to catch up)
That, together with the lack off pretty much any safety from factory such as ABS, responsive suspension, airbags, etc still might not be enough to demand a full roll cage, but if it can save 1 life in 10 races, it wasn't.
Better safe than sorry, as many of those cars don't have crumple zones or the strength of modern cars.
Damn if they need a roll cage for 50 kph than I need a carbon fiber Tub with 3 cages for going 70 mph on the highway

They were just testing the car and training Alex for rally driving. It's not an actual rally yet.
At the start of this series Alex mentioned getting young people more into classics. This is just not how to do it. I think it's cool, but I agree with a lot of the comments....it is a bit boring. Do something more exciting and engaging with some old classic. Maybe getting some old British car and doing a track series? Now that would be fantastic
I like this kind of rally a lot. You made it look slow and boring, but catching up time can be a lot harder than most here understand.
The humor is also on German point. The L's were hilarious imho.

They also must have known that pretty much everyone would assume it was an actual exciting off-road rally. From the timing, I kind of wondered if they were setting up an April fools joke, but it seems they were serious.

Agreed but there was one other time - when they refused to give/sell back the restored Skoda back to the original owner after dangling it in front of his face. The guy had looked after that car for years, he deserved it.

Does anyone else think this is the lamest “race” ever. Driving around streets doing the speed limit for 300 “grueling” miles. The mods on all of these cars are completely useless. These rally’s are for elderly people who want to dress their cars up like rally cars but without any of the actual risk, so they just end up with a street car with a useless roll cage and light pods.
Edit: this is basically the elderly European equivalent of riced out Honda’s with picnic bench wings and fart can exhausts. Except those Honda’s actually have a better chance of driving fast than these dust buckets
Most classic ar rallies in Germany are like that, because moft of the cars attending are far too valuable to put them in a risk of crashing. And unlike Americans we don't throw our money out of the window.
capitis_damno it’s fine to take classic cars for long trips in a slightly competitive setting. The problem is all the useless “racecar” mods on street cars that will never be driven hard at all. So many of the cars shown were dressed up like they were ready to Dakar when in reality they’ll never leave the streets. And these Germans aren’t immune to throwing their money out the window either. Those roll cages and light pods aren’t cheap.
I can say it is a great experience. Especially if the roads are challenging because in a straight line it is easy to average a certain speed, but on a windy road, it can be hard to maintain the respective speed. And no it cannot be compared to actual rallying but it is one of those things that you can only 'understand' if you actually try it.
Literally it's less interesting than a hypermiling compatition! At least that involves some degree of skill and has a good reason for modifications.

Everyone complaining about this; 'Ooh, they're driving so slowly'. You should have known at the title 'Classic Rally'. I knew what this was going to be because I have a copy of the 1976 Guide To Rallying. It isn't to destroy your car, it's to have average speeds, there are instructions that are put in to confuse you, vague directions to trap you (In which case you have to speed up to average back out), and in the end, it is tricky. Not just give it the beans & get around as fast as possible.
Is a toll cage in any way required for an average speed rally on the roads?

That's not a rally. that's a regularity trial. It usually ends with a picnic somewhere where ladies wear scarves and white gloves.
I kind of knew it was gonna be this kind of time trial rally like how clarkson, may and hammond did on top gear. They also used classic cars.

When you are dealing with old cars there is no point risking wrapping a rare car round a tree just to race at speeds any normal car today can achieve. Much more sensible to make it a technical challenge.

Is historic rally just driving normally on the road?
Not at all, theres full action rally (fast as you can) and regularity rally which is what he is trying with the merc. The latter is often driven by pure street cars and the fast rallies arr fully prepped rally cars.
