This comment brought tears to my eyes, because it's true 🥹 Colin can finally ask all his burning questions about Gymkhana, and Ken can ask what it was like to fight for rally titles all over the world
I live a few miles from where Colin passed and I will never forget the gathering of subaru's after his passing the line went on for miles,he was loved worldwide and his driving was epic
That'd pretty cool to know. Glad his fans still followed him even after he switched to Ford and regretted the decision. His legend could have been much greater had he lived to join Subaru In the WRC once again.
@@Aixman That was the first year only. I'm in NZ; and in 2000 Ford won the team trophy with Colin McRea 2nd, Carlos Sainz 3rd, and Petter Solberg 4th. P.S., how's that for a dream team. The speed those guys were going, you don't get a result like that if the car is unreliable. P.S.S , the team gave away to us all their Coca Cola trays of cans !!
You forgot to mention that in LA his front driver side tire also popped off the rim and was completely flat, meaning he finished only a half second behind Pastrana on only 3 functional tires. Dude was an absolute legend.
I found out about Subarus incredible rally history when I was looking for my first car and came across a 93 impraza wagon, manual, AWD with 93k miles on it. I got it for 1400. Brought it home and was cleaning it out. My brother in law asked why I was polishing a turd. 🤣 from then on I was committed to prove him wrong and keep it running. I drove that thing like I stole it from day one. Did one autocross with it at the track and then drove from AK to WA and eventually back to AK after I graduated HS. Lowered on coilovers or lifted on forester struts it never quit being a blast to drive. I swapped parts and made it look like a version 1 WRX STI. The interior has better seats, steering wheel and a shift knob from newer subarus. Diy short shifter and welded tabs to the rear lower control arms for a wrx rear swaybar. At one point someone offered me 3k cash for it but I couldn't let it go. Now it has 190k miles with tons of parts replaced over the years all by myself including the clutch just a couple weeks ago. It has broken 3 timing belts but with the 93-95 being a non interference engine nothing bad happens and I can just put a new belt on it. It's popped a few fuses also but other than those couple times, it's never left me stranded far from home. Now my little brother drives it everywhere and he learned how to drive a manual transmission doing circles in the backyard years before he even got a license. Now it has rust and dents but I don't think it will ever leave the family. The first gen impreza is easily my favorite chassis to work on and drive. They will never sell cars that last so long because then they wouldn't need to sell anyone new ones.
Truly the Gilles Villeneuve of rallying: arguably the quickest to ever do it, and did it flat out regardless of the circumstances. Still miss him to this day, one of our small country’s biggest motorsport icons 🏴🏴🏴
We have all the motor sport icons, apart from a handful. Even Senna was actually Scottish. Facts. **it has been brought to my attention that some among you haven't spotted an obvious joke. It's ok, many of us are starved of oxygen, as babies only to then be dropped as babies after starting life suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome.... Its rough and I'm on your side.
Ahh man I went to see him as kid many times let me tell you I really miss him so much 😞😞✌️ rest in Peace You Bloody Legend you inspire and inspired so many of us 🏴
Colin McRae Rally 2004 is how I learned to drive well. I used a force feedback wheel and it taught me how to counter steer, how to "listen" to what the tires are telling you about how much grip they have, and where to look while driving (known in the racing world as "where you're going to be, not where you are")
We knew the McRaes in Lanark. My mum taught both Colin and Alister at school and we lived round the corner from Jimmy and Margaret. Absolutely gutted to hear about the accident that took him from us all. I worked at Prodrive in my apprentice year on the Subaru World rally car thanks to Colin's parents helping my parents sort it out. And it kick started my career in engineering. So I owe a lot to the family. And Colin was a legend. In the true sense of the word.
That's really cool. It's nice to hear that they helped others out joining motorsport. It's incredibly difficult to get into any form of racing these days without money and connections.
Oh yes Colin was a true inspiration for many. He was also a very chill and friendly guy. Well many rally drivers were very friendly and would chat you up if their teams allowed it. I remember chatting with him briefly and he liked to joke, the next day he rolled that focus several times and even went the wrong way for about 150 meters after the second roll and then turned it around and rolled it again for the 3rd time in the same stage... the car somehow didn't give up the spirit on the stage. I've never asked any of those holy beasts of rallying for an autograph even though we were sharing the service park. I've had the honor of talking with him and others and for me that's enough.
Colin really was the definition of "People's champ" and how entertainment and personality can often outshine shear talent while proving that winning while very nice, isn't always the be all end all of sport.
during the x games race where he rolled it, he actually downshifted while it was rolling. Insanely talented and fearless and an absolute joy to watch! RIP Colin
As a Scotsman and huge fan of Colin can I thank you for a fantastic video about him. It was obvious watching it that you have great respect for him and what he did for the sport, in the time he was here. Thanks, Graham, from Scotland 🏴.
Craziest thing is that he is still being talked about today, it just shows that he was the most fun to watch and changed the name of rally forever. Really unfortunate that he passed away, he inspired a lot of young children and shined a spotlight on motorsports but focused that light on rally. Even when sim racing when i start doubting if i can make that corner with such speed but then remember that a legend once said, if in doubt, flat out!
@@Thingamajig111 But he's right, though. His recklessness led to his death, including his child and two innocent people. I'm a fan of Colin McRae, too. and I believe it is wrong to overlook that fact. He's someone that inspires but also teaches a cautious tale of one's own arrogance at the expense of others.
@@TheRealSpeedWolf I never disagreed or said who's wrong and who's right, this comment I made wasn't supposed to spark conflicts and arguments and who did that or who did this. All I was saying is he inspired people like me to just push to the limit sometimes (sim racing), not arguing on who he '"killed".
My man Colin won the Safari Rally Kenya in 1999 with a brand new focus, back in the day the Safari had 150km stages and it was more of a rally raid event (Dakar). The fact that Colin won with a new car straight out the box shows his mechanical prowess, he knew where the limits of the cars were, it's only that he didn't care for them and pushed like a maniac. Absolut idol he was, damn I miss the guy.
I love how James can seamlessly go from jokester to sincere towards the end of the video. He's really settled into his post; hell, everyone has. Donut has come such a long way in general. Neat.
Wow loved this. I worked with Colin for a while at Prodrive and we had a blast….some times at the expense of my car, the hire car or my liver… There is a drivers paradigm and they float between the ‘Remarkable and the Reckless” Colin seemed to have a foot in both more often than most, but the reckless side caught the imagination of millions. we loved him a great deal and I feel for Jimmy, Margret, Alistair, Alison and everyone else so close as they must miss him by the day. Adam
I met Colin a few years ago at a car show. Absolute legend. Was so happy to meet people (those who recognised him). Absolute top bloke. Absolute tragedy. Good work guys on this
It’s really, really hard to believe it’s been almost 15 years now. His tribute video in DiRT 2 is one of the few pieces of media I’m guaranteed to tear up over.
Watching Colin Mcrae was unreal, if you ever saw him, his car came past you at a totally different angle and at a totally different speed than everyone else, he left us all gobsmacked. Another fun fact at Finland 92 after one of his many rolls Nicky Grist tried getting out of the car and Colin drove off before he could get out of the car, I guess he didn't accept any early leavers of the party. May he and his son rest in peace for we the fans will never forget them.
As a side note, who would’ve thought that third name in that X Games medal race would ALSO become a racing icon, known less for his rally but much more for his uncanny AWD drifting ability, Ken Block. That was just a star studded cast, McCrae, Pastrana, and Block, if I was old enough to have watched that rally race, I’m sure it was nothing but legendary.
I was and I can assure you, it was a moment in history even then. Pastrana at that point was already the greatest MotoX rider in history, and Block was still the DC Shoes CEO, but was starting to establish himself in rally as someone to see. McRae goes without saying, but that one event changed motorsports forever.
I remember the day Colin and his boy passed. My mum came and told me with a heavy heart. It was the first time in my life as a 7 year old boy that I genuinely experienced heart break like never before. I had grown up with the PS1 and PS2 playing all the McRae games and watching him on old VHS tapes I had, I had loads of posters in my bedroom and I always drew the Ford Focus Martini - I always wanted to be a rally driver from the first day I could remember as a little boy and I was always playing with my toy cars in the mud in the garden pretending to be him You’re gone but you’re never forgotten Colin, you made such an impact on all of us who were inspired by the way you drive and your determination to win at any cost - May you and your son and those who were with you rest in peace
One of my friends knew Colin through his work, and as my friend had an Imprezza at the time Colin offered him a set of his old rally used wheels and other stuff for free, my friend never accepted as the rally wheels were different so would have needed new hubs etc but always said what a great down to earth and humble man Colin was in real life.
Wow, it was so much emotion video for me. I'm the on of young kids, who literally fall in love with cars, especially Subaru's, rallying and all this crazy stuff. Colin McRae Rally, was a first racing game in my life, after CTR, on my father's PS1. I'm 5 or 6 years old, playing like a crazy with gamepad in my hands and full sending my gold and blue Subaru on a stages of first 2 games of the one of the greatest racing game series in the world from Codemasters. Now I've got driver license, and as soon as I collect enough money, I want to try myself at local rally event. This is one of my dreams. Colin is a real legend. Cheers from Ukraine
Jimmy McRae still attends the knockhill events from time to time. When I was a kid I watched wrc because of Colin McRae and loved Subarus because of him too. Being from Scotland, it's weird hearing an American say Lanark wrong and making a Scottish accent 😂
Same here Colin was a Legend who got many of us into rallying and subaru even now days i kinda think. Whats the point in WRC without a subaru. But now we have Craig Breen for Ireland i have a reason to watch full time again
I watched that X Games race live on TV. It was the first a 15 year old me had ever heard of Rally and it blew my mind. I was rooting for Pastrana because I knew him, but when Colin came into that jump with a lead then rolled the car and kept going. I went through the roof with excitement. It is one of those moments I don't think I'll ever be able to accurately describe
I have played the colin mcrae rally game before on a wheel, handbrake and manual shifter with clutch. One of the most fun and difficult sim games i've ever experienced. R.I.P. Colin ❤️
Thank you for this. I've been a big McRae fan since I was a wee lad in the 90's, and WRC for the same time. WRC seemed to become stale and boring after the legends left or passed. Colin McRae (RIP), Richard Burns (RIP), Marcus Gronholm, Tommy Makkinen, Seb Loeb and not forgetting the legendary Petter Solberg. Rally is the only sport I have ever given a damn about, so I am super glad it's gotten some recognition on here.
@@kaitospence18 Yep! I watched him in a few, and it really does make me smile seeing him back! I follow Petter Solberg's son too, who always used to be on TV with Petter a wee boy, but is following his dads steps in rally
I remember watching Colin as a kid mesmerized by what he could do with a car on a rally stage, I've been a fan of both Colin and WRC ever since. True inspiration
colin's dad is like the coolest dad. helping his son achieve his dreams in something they both had a deep passion for. I wish I had like that...if I had a dad.
This video made me cry. I remember when it was announced of his helicopter crash I was at a Rally and everyone started crying. He’s still my favourite WRC driver. Long live Colin.
Nowadays there are good drivers too, like Mark & Scott Higgens, Travis Pastrana and Ken Block. About Block future will tell, since he teamed up now with Audi :'D
I still remember one of the final races he participated in, and watching him roll his car on the final lap and the final non-tarmac section. And he just, kept, going! Edit: that was it. I tuned in when he rolled that golden Subaru! I was floored by how close it was, even after damned near wrecking it!
my ultimate hero and role model since i was like 6-7 years.. i met him when he came over to norway for some events, and he noticed that i was just a huge fan so he had a quick chat with me about rally and cars.. when he crashed his chopper i cried and was drunk for a month straight.. i still havent fully recovered
I became a car guy because of this guy, I started playing Rally games because of this guy, and above all... I started loving rally because of this guy, best.rally.driver.ever Rest in piece legend.
"When in doubt go flat out" is going to be my new motto, a new way of life is born... I realized Collin drove in real life like I drive in GranTurismo lmao
Guys, seriously... Thank you for this video. No, really, I mean, you reminded me so much of my youth and icons and a time when it was all about driving... Donut media, you guys just became a part of memories and thoughts and ideas of more than just a fan like myself. You have created a channel that bonds with the viewers beyond even your own perception. Words are poor to describe in the slightest the feelings surfaced watching that video. Great work, almost art I dare say. I can't thank you enough...
I watched Colin as a young teenager and he was always #1. He is the reason I love Subaru, I have an outback 3.6L now but it is the 4th Subaru I have owned. Colin changed the world for the better. Always remembered.
Met him in the early 2000's - He came into the bar I ran one night. I was starry-eyed and starstruck because he's been my hero since I got into WRC as a lad. He just wanted a few quiet drinks with his pals.
As a rally fan and HUGE Colin fan thank you for this video. I always love to see fellow Americans get more rally exposure as it is the world's greatest motorsport. Would be great if you did another video like this on the Queen of Rally Michelle Mouton. Who after winning Pike's Peak responded to her male critics "If they had any balls, they'd race down the hill." One of the world's most beautiful, fierce, funny and intelligent women who tamed the insane monster that Audi entered in the legendary Class B.
I've always been a F1 fan but I do want to get into rally more. Do you have a WRC subscription? I have an F1 TV subscription and I love it. I've been thinking about spending the $120 for a season pass
@@PokrPro21 no I don't as honestly the expense exceeds my budget. I survive by following the WRC and Dirtfish TH-cam channels as well as being a follower of the Solbergs. @@skippylegrandgourou2069 for me the rise of Loeb was the crushing end of many of my heroes and was just too good. So I always was just annoyed he existed. In the last few years though I've really been able to give him the respect he deserves. His Dakar and WRRC career has proved he belongs among the greatest of all drivers. And more importantly for me I have heard stories of his generous nature in passing on his knowledge and love of driving. All that said.......for me there is no greater driver from France then M. Mouton. While others may have greater skill, no one has more courage and character. 🇨🇵

I’ve been to WRC 2002 in Germany to witness Loebs first WRC win ever, anyway-standing at a corner at the “Panzerplatte” section I’ve saw them all go through and Collin was even visually so much faster than anybody else. He crashed a little while after that incredible move, but still managed to finish 4th overall. Truly a legend-RIP
The three moments I distinctly remember from the x games back in the day - 1. Shaun white double mctwist 2. Travis pastrana double backflip on dirt bike and of course, 3. Colin McRae rolling his car in rallycross. What a legend
I remember watching Colins in car footage, he was touching the brake rapidly, like every few seconds and it's something I have never forgotten. I was in awe of the guy from a young age. Absolute legend 💫
Fun fact: "Colin McRae Rally" was heavily inspired by Sega Rally, the very first 3D rally game, first racing game with different surfaces, and first game to ever use licensed real cars. Codemasters admit years later how much that game has been key to develop their own.
@@OnceHopefuL yes, he did. Unfortunately it was not that good like the leob one. The only decent rally games these days are the wrc official licence games and dirt. The dirt series is now owned by EA so God knows how dirt 6 will look...

He became so iconic with his flamboyant wild driving...driving LIKE his ar$e was on fire every day and he was racing ahead of time litterally chasing every second of time had to offer like his life depended on it...he had the mentsl processesing of a computer whizzing away solving problems on the fly as he hurtled down the road sliding and slicing his way through the stages leaving his competitors in his dust and he bounced and flew over jumps and any obstacle that dared to get in this driving royaltys way... rip our freind you brought so much joy and love to a sport you helped devolop a driving style like no other taking ridiculous risks mere mortals wouldn't even consider or contemplate attempting...you were the sight and sound of your mad generation...love you Colin ❤❤❤💪💪💪.rest easy.
@@Idfk13yes i agree McRae is more Iconic but Loeb is the greatest. Man won a world champion with an outdated private team Citroen Xsara against a Brand new factory Ford Focus driven by 2times wc Gronholm. That's tough
Thank you for making this video, it took me straight back to my late teens/early 20's and the love I had for rallying. My first car was a mk2 Escort, those drivers and especially McRae were the reason why I used to thrash it down the country lanes hanging it's arse out on the turns and eventually wrecked it, crashing it on a hump-back bridge though in McRae style I still drove it home. I went to many of those special stages over the years and I was there for those victory donuts in 1995. They were special times, though I quit going after 1997 when they moved it all to Wales, it was too much of a pain in the arse to drive all the way there, stand around in the cold and wet at the side of the stage and then drive home (I switched to touring cars so I ended up driving to those and standing at the side of an often cold, windy ex-airfield circuit instead...). Rallying was something else back then though with stage-side makeshift fixes after crashes and mechanical trouble, I remember teams sometimes borrowing parts from spectator's cars to get them to the service point, I hope those guys got properly compensated lol. Rallying these days is fast but it just seems so tame now.
The OG PS1 Colin McRae game was a real game changer. No game before it was so much fun or felt so real. I was an avid rally fan during this time. This vid was a real trip down memory lane for me :)
Dude, the bagpipes and the drums were such a perfect and tasteful way to end this video. Brought a tear to my eye. As a huge rally enthusiast and a McRae fan, we will never see his like again.
Colin McRae and that Subaru Impreza is the reason gold wheels are cool and I will not change my mind on that. A legend of the highest order and a true tragedy that neither himself or Ricky Burns are still with us today.
He was before my time, but I remember playing Colin McRae Rally on PS2 ! Loved it ! Sébastien Leob is the GOAT though. 0 doubts exist. Just proved it again at Monte Carlo
Loeb does have his own game, it's a Milestone game called Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo. It's not bad, but has its issues. The stages are rather good, despite being fairly flat, and the physics are okay but let-down by poor input mapping
Have it on PC. For some reason the default setups are really soft and the brake bias very rearward. Driving experience is good with fixed setups, but career is a bit bland.
Loeb is a driving machine. He is a super technically skillful driver. More of the "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" mentality. Colin was "SLAM IT TO THE FLOOR" so damn entertaining.
Loeb was graced by Citroen's enormous budget and by almost no real challengers. Only Gronholm could, when he had a good car and superally rules didn't work against him. Older drivers struggled with E-diffs, and younger drivers were (and still are) mostly no-ones.
@@shanedelgado666 I'm not saying Loeb is unskilled, I'm saying that Citroen built a car with far more money than everybody else. With a Skoda WRC I'm not sure he would have been as remarkable.

I feel blessed to be able to follow Collin throughout his WRC career, r.i.p champ. And I played the computer games till my eyes fell out of their sockets. 🤗
I remember watching him in some home video during a recce talking about how he would start rotating the car on the way up to the jump so the car would continue rotating while flying through the air at insane speeds surrounded by trees to land pointed in the right direction for the next turn. Everyone else slowed down before the jump to be able to turn when they needed to. He was a maniac and a genius.
Colin was so fun to watch, flat out all the time. Good tribute, and attempt at a Scottish accent 😂 I was lucky enough to have been born in Chester, so I always used to head into the city centre early morning when the Lombard / RAC rally started there. I was also at Chester racecourse to watch him win in 1995! (I was somewhere in the crowd on the video clip you showed in front of the grandstand). I was helping Marshall on the 1993 rally, on the Oulton Park stage, and briefly got to speak to Colin (and most of the drivers) at the end of the stage, as we had to get brief course/conditions notes to radio back to the start line. I don't remember much about it as I was totally starstruck, and it's a foggy recollection... My funniest memory of the rally was the start in Chester in 1992 I think, I was stood in front of what was Midland Bank, early hours, watching Jeremy Clarkson record a rally report for old old old Top Gear. He kept getting his lines wrong and was getting frustrated, smoked a whole packet of cigarettes I think, but he was funny, joking with us who were watching.
The reason I have "if in doubt, flat out" tattooed on my right arm. I grew up watching Colin McRae as a huge rally fan and was always inspired by the never give up mentality and sheer lunacy of his driving style. The man will always be remembered as a LEGEND of motorsports!
He’s the guy you hear in interviews all the time that scared the life out of passengers when they went for a drive with him Jeramy Clarkson said he was scared stiff riding with him Just fearless

Colin McRae Rally 2004 is how I learned to drive well. I used a force feedback wheel and it taught me how to counter steer, how to "listen" to what the tires are telling you about how much grip they have, and where to look while driving (known in the racing world as "where you're going to be, not where you are")
That's exactly the same rule in Judo, look where you want to throw.

Craziest thing is that he is still being talked about today, it just shows that he was the most fun to watch and changed the name of rally forever. Really unfortunate that he passed away, he inspired a lot of young children and shined a spotlight on motorsports but focused that light on rally. My man Colin won the Safari Rally Kenya in 1999 with a brand new focus, back in the day the Safari had 150km stages and it was more of a rally raid event (Dakar).

Good tribute, and attempt at a Scottish accent 😂
I was lucky enough to have been born in Chester, so I always used to head into the city centre early morning when the Lombard / RAC rally started there.
He’s the guy you hear in interviews all the time that scared the life out of passengers when they went for a drive with him
Jeramy Clarkson said he was scared stiff riding with him
Just fearless
Ive been waiting for this episode for months. Thank you Donut and remember, when in doubt flat out.
We need a Ken Block documentary guys. I know HNGN will do one, but Donut is a staple in the car community too, we love your story telling because like HNGN, you’re REAL CAR GUYS too. The world is crying man. Let’s see it happen
I have been looking for a comment that goes on to describe the great story telling going on here
I am so appreciative of this channel continuously showing love for the more european fanbase of WRC and F1. Big up to you heroes
I'm thankful as an American to see more American coverage of rally topics as well. I think more Americans should give rallying the love it deserves.
I remember Colin from when I was a child watching rally with my dad.
Even though the WRC isn't in t.v here anymore I still watch every season, because of Colin.
I was thrilled to see Loeb back in action this year. I felt like a little kid.
Colin is the reason why I love rally. The very first rally game I played was Colin McRae Rally 2.0 on the PS1, definitely a game changer for me.
Yup same for me. The only rally game that i introduce to car
physics.
You know he's rallying in haven! Bless to the man who made the rally a real worldwide event!
Fun fact: the first gen turbo legacy came with the same closed deck block as the 22b
you should do an episode about jean ragnotti! a semi truck driver who became an amazing rallye and le mans driver and stuntmen. He was always drifting, pulling handbrakes, doing 360's
I’m old enough to remember following Jimmy on rallies with my Dad.
Also got to see a young Colin race.
Such fantastic times following races, and as someone who is also from Lanarkshire, and similar in age to Colin, it was great to have someone to cheer for.
Cheers for doing this one guys.
Oh, but 1 note, Loeb does have his own vidya game 🤪
Around this time I had graduated high school and had a friend who loved rally. I remember seeing highlights of Colin in the Impreza but never got the whole story. This kid had a fiery spirit and you really brought him back to life. Thanks, Pump.
Im glad to see this video. McRae reminds me of when rally was free on tv i loved watching that and f1 then the video game too. I actually hated the Focus simply because ford took McRae away from Subaru. I still remember when the news broke about his death. R.I.P Colin a true legend, Tommy may have won more chamionships but you were always number 1 to many of us
What another great episode is this, flawless victory!! Brought so much memories when I was a teen watching Colin and Sainz on Eurosport back in the '90s. Well done Donut lovers!
I knew about McCrae living in Los Angeles and I hadn’t even driven a car, let alone drive one sideways in the dirt! A LEGEND INDEED!!!
This was my first video of yours I’ve ever watched and it was fantastic! Going to deep dive now. I remember the impact that renting the original Colin McRae Rally on my PlayStation had on me. It forever changed my view on what driving is and can be.
