Well done Tara! Went home grabbed a painters pole and began immediately. For others I had a brain stem stroke 5 years ago with complete paralysis of the left side. Never give up! While I am not acting like a 16 year old physically I am mobile, I do drive, and for a 68 year old man I continue to improve. One last word of caution, I have had setbacks, hot sweats when trying to walk my left leg would not lift, and left foot toes curling under my foot that had to be stretched out by hand. Neural rehab after stroke is not kind, nor is it easy. It takes effort and determination.

Another great video. You may recall I'm a former practicing physician who had a stroke in April of 21 with left sided weakness, especially in my left arm where I had some profound spasticity and weakness, which subsided after about 3 weeks, but I had to focus on getting my arm swing back. My therapists had me do some of the exercise you illustrate in this video. My uncle just had the same stroke. I will recommend that he watch your videos. At 7 months, I am bowling 18 games a week and playing some bass guitar. I've watched your videos since I was in the hospital in April. Thank you. You've been a big help to me!

Excellent explanation Dr Tobias. Thankfully I can now drive my arm down and keep it down. In the early days it was very flexed and was always worse when I anxious out in public. Again hard work and time definitely pays off.

Thank you Dr, Tara for all your videos, including your recent video on abnormal muscle synergies in the arm. My left arm flexes up and inward when I walk. Using the dowel rod is helpful...will keep practising on this one and next will try raising my arms to the ceiling . Your videos along with your positive attitude have helped me immensely. I only wish I had heard about your videos much earlier right after my hemorrhagic stroke. I now follow your sessions on Rehab-HQ faithfully. Thank you very much.
This Holiday Season, I wish you one that is perfect right from the very start; one that is filled with special joys with your family and friends. Many Blessings throughout 2022.
    Warm regards,

Thanks for the explanation, with the progress of rehabilitation, that reaction weakens, but as soon as I have more effort, such as climbing, lifting my bag, etc., it immediately intensifies. These exercises will surely speed up the breaking of that pattern. Have a nice week.

🌸🌸🌸 Dear Dr. Tara, this is such a cool video. The arm plopping up as soon as walking starts is still sometimes a thing for me. So I take the mobile phone in the hand to give it a bit of weight and to get the thumb spastic under control.
In the evening on the sofa I do your arm stretch with an old golf club, that is so nicely easy to grab 😀😀.
Wishing you and your family a very beautiful holiday season! 🌸🌸🌸

Fantastic video with a lot of things to try. I know that this video is about the upper extremity. What I have found for the legs that helps me. I have an articulating AFO and with that I dorsey flex my ankle by leaning forward and then place a wedge namely a cap from a medication bottle and wedge my in that position while I sit and read, ect for at least a couple of hours breaking up the hip, knee and ankle

Hi Fred! Great to see you mid-week! This is a excellent idea! To add to the rationale, sometimes when you “calm” spasticity in one area, it will cause the other areas to relax as well. 😊

One suggestion what I'm doing. Is walk with me arms behind me. Do you think it's a good idea or not? I can't use my right arm at all and the spasticity was really bad.

    Thanks for the mid-week video!
Your response to the question, “Why is this so important?” really struck me …
“Because to continue to progress your walking back to normal, you really need to uncouple that upper body and lower body.”
I’m sure you’ve said that before. It makes sense with some of your exercises. But, it sunk in. 😊

I understand the different synergy patterns have different names. What would you call my synergy pattern? Luckily, I don't have extreme spasticity in my left arm. I can lift it over my head and in and out, but when I do foot lift exercises on my left foot my hand clenches up. What would you call this synergy?

How often should I do these? I had a Stroke 12 years ago. I am very active but my arm is still spastic and bothers me. Should I do this before my regular workout or after?

  • @84naners
    @84naners 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My arm really bothers me when I walk and has really decreased my confidence when walking. Walking is hard so obviously it immediately starts moving towards my body and a little upward in my belly area...so my elbow is sort of bent outward. I have the ability to straighten it...but it will keep doing it as long as l continue walking or doing something that takes effort. I always straighten it whenever I notice it creeping up...i don't know what else to do to break the habit. Will it eventually get any better as long as I keep adjusting it? Am I doing enough? In February I will be a year post stroke. Please let me know!

Do not lose hope, the fist is the last to recover. You have to recover your whole arm the hardest, only the persistent ones succeed. First you mentally visualize the movements, help yourself with the other hand and then your fingers start to move a bit. Only positive thinking helps, it is a process, it lasts, but it pays off. Good luck!
