  • Raising the arm can be difficult to relearn after damage to the brain or the spinal cord. However, most people do not want to start there. Most people would prefer to start with the hand in an effort to get back to doing all the necessary skills (activities of daily living) without assistance.
In this video I will explain the best way to regain arm and hand movement

I'm 4 years post stroke. Left side affected. Fingers are just starting to open. I use a resting splint at night to keep the wrist in a neutral position and fingers open. Weekly hand therapy, botox and mental imagery. I'm now using a home robotics program endorsed by my neurologist as hopefully the last tool to get my hand to function again. Never give up and work hard. Great video.😊

Always had good shoulder condition but no arm hand function. Now he can move and rotate his wrist. We'll add your exercises to improve shoulder strength. He's wearing a dictus Splint now and this has improved his walk and stature, and reduced fatigue. It's so important to have the professionalism and your videos encouraged us to achieve this. 🌺🌺 Yeeees Dr. Tara, suuuuper right!! The thumb spastics is the worst and most dominant of all of them. Getting the thumb stretched out is the basis for relaxing the hand and for getting the arm down, in my experience. My quick fix is that I run around the whole day with my mobile phone in the hand. Instantly the arm goes down, even while walking. 🌺🌺 Sure your splints are better for serious exercises, but the quick fix works in all other daily situations. 🌺🌺

Could not agree more about the thumb abduction on a hand splint. When I bought a splint that placed my thumb out, it helped relieve spacticity in my thumb and fingers tremendously. It was like taking a huge leap forward in my recovery when I started wearing my splint a few hours a day.

I used to use a hand splint too for my elbow and hand until my physiotherapist told me to stop using it. He suggested I tried controlling the elbow myself because it jumps up involuntarily when I walk. The splint did immobilize the plastic arm but everything returns back after I remove it so, there was no use wearing it.

So I'm a survivor of four brain injuries and woke up from coma with left arm stuck to my chest. It took alot of work. To even regain use. I found guitar practicing helped me alot. I've actually got a q for you. So my doctor told me I'd have minor pain from partial paralysis. That was an understatement. I get brutal pains that bring me to the ground and pain is insanely brutal even sometimes feels like I'm gonna die from it as it makes my chest tight. I myself like to use cannabis to deal with it after it happens. Would you have any suggestions how to stop the spells from happening? I call them spells cause happens few times a day rarely I go a full day without it happening. Are there any techniques that I can practice to stop these spells. I got movement back I can even play guitar again very crassly but can slightly play Atleast I suck horribly compared to how good I use to be able to play but I thank God I can even play a little still. But I just don't get many suggestions on these spells. Is there anything I can do to prevent or even maybe shorten the spells from minutes long to alot shorter? It's not a minor discomfort like doctor said it would be. It's insane and has caused me to kinda become a shutin cause when it happens infront of ppl that don't know me they freak out and think I'm having a heart attack. So I try not to let it happen around others.

Are there other splints that you would recommend? Should the splint be worn 24/7? My OT had me wearing a "dynamic" splint at night, but it never seemed to work correctly. My fingers could still find a way out and I felt like the circulation to my thumb was cut off. My Botox treatments seem to keep my fingers fairly relaxed. But I still get involuntary clenching with exertion, especially when performing things like a plank.

    Hello,
I want to thank you immensely for the helpful videos. I really enjoy watching them and practicing the exercises.
I'm have been on physiotherapy for about a year and 6 months after a basal ganglia CVA that affected by left side. I have made some recovery but I'm worried that recovery has slowed down although I do lots of exercises. My major problem is that I can't straighten up my upper limb without my elbow bending and elbow jumps up while I walk. The Plasticity was very severe before but it's reducing now. Is there anything I can add to weight bearing, stretching and use of reciprocal pulley to facilitate quick recovery of my arm? Thanks.

Good Morning, I am a CNA and my client had a stroke in 2015. His hand and arm was neglected when it came to physical therapy so I am trying new stretches and exercises with him daily. He wears a hand splint at night only, should he be wearing his splint during the day? Please and thank you.

What do you think about hip internal rotation? My hips stuck in external and it’s difficult to isolate my hip in internal rotation. I haven’t seen any of your videos talk about that but it seems to be a common theme with stroke patients. Thank you for all of this great content. It's been tremendously useful for me in getting past some of my plateaus.

I take baclofen and get botox which helps but it's still slow going on the arm/hand. I can hold and release stuff but the spasticity in my forearm is mainly what's killing further progress.

Hello I had 3 strokes in 2003 all affecting my left side a bit of spasticity was there but I was able to still use my hand a bit it was not as tight as now, in 2015 I had my 4th stroke, this one was on the other side so when I was in hospital I could not even scratch my face with either hand but on the way out of hospital to my surprise I scratched my face although now my right hand works pretty well until the 4th stroke on the other side but it still made my left side worse now my hand is clenched more and even my leg is bowed under more my arm squeezes me on my chest my left thumb nail is standing up of my thumb I used to wake up with my hand open for a while but now it is closed all the time now, my thumb bends over and while I sleep my thumb pushes so hard against my other finger that it has pushed the thumbnail of the front of my thumb that is why it sticks up of my thumb my doctor looked at it worried but that was all a couple of years ago that the doctor looked at it it worried looking this year I only had appointments over the phone

    Hi,
I have stroke in right side, since 24-04-2017, I have 2 questions for you...
1-He said « strong leg goes up and weak go down »; if the opposite happened?
2-I did the exercise « ankle dorsiflexion with electrical stimulation » ;my right foot move inside the legs not the go up “ defect because from birth “ ; after while I have :
    a - little foot drop.
b- I cannot climb with the strong leg and I have difficulty climbing with my weak leg; what you think?

Hi I have a traumatic brain injury, and i can’t use my left hand I wore a splint for a long time, but it was heavy, and made my shoulder hurt, and i thought that having the splint on Kepler from using my hand, but idk i guess i need to work with my hand more to kinda get it back working, or get on the track to get it back working.

Slowest part of the body to go on line again due to too many joints and type. Six year post stroke, I still dont have any movement in my fingers. I didn't let any part of my lyme to go into contracture. My advice: stretch, stretch, stretch every joint. Avoid subluxation, and shortening of any muscle.

Should Passive Assist Motorized Training exerciser and a vibration plate be added to my routine (I have both), will they help with spasticity? Ordered the Mat Table in order to do more, I should not get on the floor due to the inability to get back up, so I'm really looking forward to being able to take full advantage of all your instructions.

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

These are excellent questions! First, I am glad you ordered a mat table. I do think it is an invaluable tool for your exercises. As far as the mostorized trainer, if you have a motomed, that is second to none for home rehab equipment. Not only does it assist but you also get feedback by looking at the screen where it shows how much each leg is working. As far as the vibe plate, generally speaking, I am not a fan of this for anyone who is "high tone" (meaning you have involuntary muscle contractions with minimal. exertion). Again, generally speaking, I find that this can trigger a spasm. But if it does not do that when you stand on it, then it is great for improving sensation in the legs. :) I hope that helps!

Hello. My wife had a stroke late last year and is currently right side deficit. She has no movement in her right arm, hand, fingers. She has a little movement in her right leg, mainly the foot area. She has difficulty speaking. Currently she is getting therapy for speech and for her leg and I am doing all the therapy for her hand as I was shown at the hospital. Can you please clarify how the hand should rest in a splint; is it as you showed towards the end of the video. And where does one obtain such splints. I am not in a position to make one. Since you stated that exercises for the arm should start with the shoulder and travel down the arm to the hand and finders, what are the exercises that can be done on each section of the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand, thumb and fingers. I have a lot of questions. Please bear with me; I just want to do all I can and the best for my wife so that she recovers as much as possible. Thank you.
