I'm 4 years post stroke. Left side affected. Fingers are just starting to open. I use a resting splint at night to keep the wrist in a neutral position and fingers open. Weekly hand therapy, botox and mental imagery. I'm now using a home robotics program endorsed by my neurologist as hopefully the last tool to get my hand to function again. Never give up and work hard. Great video.😊

@@__BharathS Greetings Mr Bharath My experience is that I first mentally imagined how, for example, I was washing the car with a cloth, playing the piano, playing chess, etc. Then I put the affected hand on the table and with the healthy hand, starting with the thumb, I slowly straightened the fingers and held them for 15 minutes While driving in the car I also straightened my fingers and sat on them. While watching TV, I often stretched my fingers and wrist ... It all makes sense AFTER RECOVERY of the muscles of the shoulder, upper arm and forearm, Dr. Tara also claims, and it's also logical, because what good are fingers if you don't move your hand. I've watched all of Tara's videos and I've never seen her make a mistake, she's by far the best of all the ones I've worked with. I will be happy if I can help at least a little.

I used to use a hand splint too for my elbow and hand until my physiotherapist told me to stop using it. He suggested I tried controlling the elbow myself because it jumps up involuntarily when I walk. The splint did immobilize the plastic arm but everything returns back after I remove it so, there was no use wearing it.
Hello. My wife had a stroke late last year and is currently right side deficit. She has no movement in her right arm, hand, fingers. She has a little movement in her right leg, mainly the foot area. She has difficulty speaking. Currently she is getting therapy for speech and for her leg and I am doing all the therapy for her hand as I was shown at the hospital. Can you please clarify how the hand should rest in a splint; is it as you showed towards the end of the video. And where does one obtain such splints. I am not in a position to make one. Since you stated that exercises for the arm should start with the shoulder and travel down the arm to the hand and finders, what are the exercises that can be done on each section of the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand, thumb and fingers. I have a lot of questions. Please bear with me; I just want to do all I can and the best for my wife so that she recovers as much as possible. Thank you.

Hi my hand improves first so much and my shoulder is not still not too strong promise I focused more in my shoulder and voila I can reach things if it got at least a part to use as holder
🌺🌺 Yeeees Dr. Tara, suuuuper right!! The thumb spastics is the worst and most dominant of all of them. Getting the thumb stretched out is the basis for relaxing the hand and for getting the arm down, in my experience. My quick fix is that I run around the whole day with my mobile phone in the hand. Instantly the arm goes down, even while walking. 🌺🌺 Sure your splints are better for serious exercises, but the quick fix works in all other daily situations. 🌺🌺 I loved to hear Chicos little doggy paws running around you while videoing 🥰🥰 such an adorable little helper 😍😍🐶🐶🐶
Hi Nina! Thanks for the cell phone idea! That is great. Especially with these mini tablets we now carry in our hand 🙃. Oh, and about Chico, I am so used to it I sometimes don't hear it until I edit the video 🤦🏻♀️ Most of the time, I pause until he finishes "helping" 🙃 I am glad it was not to distracting.
Greetings, I'm 10+ months into recovery. As you said everything is connected . . . I believe I had spasticity in the muscles along my spine. I found relief from my acupuncture/massage therapist. Good Morning, I am a CNA and my client had a stroke in 2015. His hand and arm was neglected when it came to physical therapy so I am trying new stretches and exercises with him daily. He wears a hand splint at night only, should he be wearing his splint during the day? Please and thank you.
Hello, I want to thank you immensely for the helpful videos. I really enjoy watching them and practicing the exercises. I'm have been on physiotherapy for about a year and 6 months after a basal ganglia CVA that affected by left side. I have made some recovery but I'm worried that recovery has slowed down although I do lots of exercises. My major problem is that I can't straighten up my upper limb without my elbow bending and elbow jumps up while I walk. The Plasticity was very severe before but it's reducing now. Is there anything I can add to weight bearing, stretching and use of reciprocal pulley to facilitate quick recovery of my arm? Thanks.
Hi I have a traumatic brain injury, and i can’t use my left hand I wore a splint for a long time, but it was heavy, and made my shoulder hurt, and i thought that having the splint on Kepler from using my hand, but idk i guess i need to work with my hand more to kinda get it back working, or get on the track to get it back working.
Hi Dr.T I'm 7 months post stroke and I'm having difficultly with extension of my fingers on my left hand. I'm going to my OT, doing EMS therapy and trying to use mental imagery to get my fingers and hand to open, but still I'm having a difficult time releasing my grip once I hold an object, or my hand makes a fist during certain movements. I have a pretty good grip, and I'm not to the point where my spasticity keeps my arm or hand bent or drawn into my body. My fingers and hand are not constantly balled up, but I'm unable to extend my fingers and open my hand at will. I'm very frustrated, and want to know what would help assist me better to extend my hand and fingers. I have an XPoint TENS/EMS at home to help with muscle stimulation for hand, wrist and my finger extension; I just started taking Baclofen at the lowest dosage to help with my spasticity which isn't really severe as diagnosed by my physiatrist(PMR)..... What can I do more of to help facilitate the extension of my hand, fingers and wrist for better functionality during my Rehabilitation. Please give me your feedback, everyone tells me to be patient with myself, which is easier said than done sometimes, and I'm very frustrated and don't want to get into a mode of "learned non-use". I feel I'm not progressing as fast as I could be, what can I do more of?
@@slampire1 Thanks for your feedback..... Please, tell me where on your effected hand did you place the electrical(EMS) stimulation?..... Because I've been placing the electrodes on the outside of my forearm between my wrist and elbow which is where I was told the finger muscles are that help extend our fingers.
Thank you so much for guiding with right tips for patients like us , through your video i got few ideas on what i should focous to get hand n movement back coincidentally i noticed arm muscles are connected to finger movements when I used a pulse massager it was vibrating my fingers please tell me is there any use of pulse massager electronic device
Hi I came across this video a real eye opener unlike other videos clear and concise for the last 6 - 7 years i have starting severe unbearable pain in my wrist, fingers, shoulder, wrist and my eye over the years my wrist, i have tried many pain killers splints but nothing has worked, my question is I had my stroke in 2011 I did not do much physio if I start the hand and shoulder excerises will the brain rewiring work after so many years of my stroke, thank you in advance.
All therapists say get a splint that do certain things. But when you ask which one they say there aren’t any haha. Am to the point I might just wrap my hand and wrist in duct tape.
Are there other splints that you would recommend? Should the splint be worn 24/7? My OT had me wearing a "dynamic" splint at night, but it never seemed to work correctly. My fingers could still find a way out and I felt like the circulation to my thumb was cut off. My Botox treatments seem to keep my fingers fairly relaxed. But I still get involuntary clenching with exertion, especially when performing things like a plank.
You can use finger rings of PVC pipe even made from cardboard to prevent fingers from bending or curling inside as fist. I too am stroke patient recovering from left side paralysis. I used slip disc support belt and these finger rings for recovery and there was positive recovery. This belt helped to keep my elbow straight. Can you pls advice how to have better movement and strengthening of these muscles. I still have stiffness in extending my left arm across right hand side and difficulty in rotating my shoulder round. The pain is there in back muscle of my left arm coming from upper left arm and the muscle opposite that muscle on the upper left arm. Still my pointer/ middle/ little finger muscle pains when I knuckle. I always feel to knuckle to relax these fingers. Can you pls guide. Now my left side neck muscles has started paining
Hemiplegic here. How can I put on a hand splint by myself and can I sleep with it on? Another thing, where are your videos that go from proximal to distal recovery, do you have a playlist that I can go to?
I do have some spasticity in my left hand/arm. My finger movement is improving as is my reach in my at-home therapy. To avoid the firing at the same time, is doing resistance bands not appropriate for shoulder exercises? Should I not be working those muscles?

Where is the link,? It might be an affect of the stroke, but I can’t find it . 🙃
Love this!!!
Hi my hand improves first so much and my shoulder is not still not too strong promise I focused more in my shoulder and voila I can reach things if it got at least a part to use as holder
My shoulder work elbow work not finger suggest some idea for future recovery
OK apart from stretching and splinting given that I have elbow and shoulder movement can you advise on finger extension I have flexion that's.not tone
4 years post stroke.I have spasticity in my tricep, and hand extensors,Also a tight pectoral tendon which makes shoulder lifting hard.
I loved to hear Chicos little doggy paws running around you while videoing 🥰🥰 such an adorable little helper 😍😍🐶🐶🐶
@@rehabhqofficial 😁😁😁🤣🤣🤣 Chico is the best 🥰🥰🥰
Greetings,
I'm 10+ months into recovery. As you said everything is connected . . . I believe I had spasticity in the muscles along my spine. I found relief from my acupuncture/massage therapist. Improved my neck/face/sinus issues. As well as the shoulder/arm/hand/fingers. You, as well as she are a Godsend.

Good Morning, I am a CNA and my client had a stroke in 2015. His hand and arm was neglected when it came to physical therapy so I am trying new stretches and exercises with him daily. He wears a hand splint at night only, should he be wearing his splint during the day? Please and thank you.
Hello,
I want to thank you immensely for the helpful videos.
Thanks.
How is your condition now
Where I can find this device?? And how it's called?
Where can I get one of them bags for my arms from bending
where can i get the air splint
Are stretching machines good for patients? I have a 5 yrs old daughter still can't control fingers but she can move her shoulder and arm
Yes I wear splints in my hand for my weight bearing and many exercises
Hi I have a traumatic brain injury, and i can’t use my left hand I wore a splint for a long time, but it was heavy, and made my shoulder hurt, and i thought that having the splint on Kepler from using my hand, but idk i guess i need to work with my hand more to kinda get it back working, or get on the track to get it back working.
Please Maureen from Nigeria like ya lecture. How can I get the hand splint for my mom
Hi Dr.T
I'm 7 months post stroke and I'm having difficultly with extension of my fingers on my left hand.
Use an electric stimulation on you affected hand my hand fooened up when I did that
@@slampire1 Thanks for your feedback..... Please, tell me where on your effected hand did you place the electrical(EMS) stimulation?..... Because I've been placing the electrodes on the outside of my forearm between my wrist and elbow which is where I was told the finger muscles are that help extend our fingers.
Extremely valuable opinion on thumb abduction
Dr Tara ... what is a good brace for the hand. I've been using the SaeboStretch but it stretches down in front by fingers. Got any better ideas?
All therapists say get a splint that do certain things. But when you ask which one they say there aren’t any haha. Am to the point I might just wrap my hand and wrist in duct tape.
I will take this one. No recommendation. Because there aren’t any. But get one that does what I say it should
You can get a simple plastic hand splint on ebay for less than $10...it's just flat w/ velcro straps for each finger...crude but seems to work
@@nojtone59 do you have one of these?
Amazing explanation
My doctor, and physiotherapist say I shouldn't use a splint. TBI nine years ago. Spasticity in left arm, bent elbow. Just keep stretching and using?
Are there other splints that you would recommend? Should the splint be worn 24/7? My OT had me wearing a "dynamic" splint at night, but it never seemed to work correctly. My fingers could still find a way out and I felt like the circulation to my thumb was cut off. My Botox treatments seem to keep my fingers fairly relaxed. But I still get involuntary clenching with exertion, especially when performing things like a plank.
What do you do if your arm doesn't move at all?
I have a back surgery and due to that having a foot drop issue. Any recommendations for physical therapy in Cary, North Carolina area
What kind of splint do you need for the wrist/hand?
this is so helpful!!! thank you
Pls recommend splint for wrist and hand, can we use cockup split ?
I don't know of any on the market that keep the hand open and the thumb abducted. But if you have one that does that, that would be an option
@@rehabhqofficial can we use cockup split?
Hemiplegic here. How can I put on a hand splint by myself and can I sleep with it on? Another thing, where are your videos that go from proximal to distal recovery, do you have a playlist that I can go to?
i was looking at the orlando center. i am in north fl. is the center for outpatient therapy???thank you. a stroke survivor.
I do have some spasticity in my left hand/arm. My finger movement is improving as is my reach in my at-home therapy. To avoid the firing at the same time, is doing resistance bands not appropriate for shoulder exercises? Should I not be working those muscles?
for spasticity i have been doing the perfetti method. i have seen a lot of improvement
Give me you email I want to contact to you
Perfetti method?? What is this???
Please share

Thank you for this video and the work you do. This is my first video of yours and I am super impressed with how clearly you explain things.
Hi there. Thanks for the great video! One question, I had a head injury which I was only 2 years of age I am currently 32 now. Do you think this would work now? I get Botox injections every 3 months.
I started with stretching and wearing a brace 9 years after my stroke and have made progress. It is never too late!
Add estim to your therapy, especially the first 6 weeks after botox. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition is key! th-cam.com/video/PHvo01jkpX8/w-d-xo.html
I used to have hightone but it has disappeared lately any advice on the hand now since spacticity is less of an issue???
Thanks Dr. Tara, really helpful

If the Muscles do Wire together can they be Unwired or Fixed?
How do you make an air splint?
🙄 what if my shoulder and elbow are actually fine? Meaning I can lay flat and do push ups perfectly fine? But from my wrist to my fingers are the main problem? Like I can open door knobs and stuff but I can’t write as well as my other hand can?
Dr. Tara, thank you, again for a an eye opener. I am 2 years post stroke, still no hand recovery. Can you tell us what to do about plateaus. I have nnever gotten a good explanation. I get frustrated sometimes.
I just recently had a stroke a month ago. And I am left side effected I also did play guitar haven’t been able to play. I’m not sure if playing again is a realistic goal. I can’t even make a chord shape

Dear Orlando Neuro Therapy thank you for your videos. Can you please tell me if it is possible to start making any improvements with hand movement after you haven't done any therapy and you neglected your arm for a long time? Please help me with this...please...please!
Can you show examples of splints for the hand
fingers are opening not being able to use them is what gets me seven months into my stroke
What is the best splint available I would like to get my mother in one she had a stroke January 8th, 2021.
So here's a silly question. How do you inflate the splint? I see you blowing into it but do you need the pump that they sell on amazon?
That is an excellent question! I show it this way because if you are the only one using it, I say save the money. Air is free 🙃
Hi I have hand finger and full arm movement but its all still weak how do I strengthen it?
