    I can attest to Dr. Tobias's arm workouts, I've used many of them to get my arm stronger. Now my entire arm is pretty much functional. Just be consistent and do them everyday, once your shoulder is good it will be so much easier to get everything else working. My hand isn't there yet but it’s slowly getting there. Thank you Doc for the wealth of knowledge you’re putting out here. You have been instrumental in my recovery and I'm sure you’ve helped so many ppl! You're a blessing to us all 🙏🏾

    How complicated that machinery is, but with a teacher like this there MUST be progress. I believe that some variants of this exercise will inhibit my spasticity and thus speed up my progress, now it is clear to me why it is such a long process, so many variables need to be mastered. Perseverance always brings results, the Japanese are a very obvious example. Thanks, have a nice week.

The one where you are reaching out to the stool or chair in front of you, I found to be most helpful to me. Wow! Great stuff that I've not heard of. The whole of "closed chain" was new terminology/ concept even after 16mths seeking pt advice! I've been given various weight bearing ex but they all require an open hand (still an aspiration without a splint) and no pt has suggested any of these or used this vocab. :(
    Some of these ex are deffo going into my daily routine! Ill have to watch again and experiment. How my shoulder blade lays is something I want to work on as I'd concluded it is limiting movement by comparing with how my left arm moves

      Hi Jeff! Thank you for watching and for this question. Hand spasticity will make this more difficult. If you can get help getting the hand open, many times it will stay open once it is flat on a surface. You can alway add some sand bags on top to help keep it open. I hope that helps!

    I share this account with my husband, so the picture is misleading. What are the potential improvements possible for polio damage to right hand, arm, shoulder by using your neurological approach to physical therapy? These are effects from 1953. I have adapted some exercises that were given to me for the left arm after rotator cuff surgery and I am seeing improvement on the right as an some increase in strength closer to the shoulder. Does this mean the atrophy in the brain can be reversed a bit and open the possibliity of some mobility improvement, even for an old patient?

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and for sharing your story! Generally speaking, if someone has a history of polio and present with "new weakness" later in life, that is referred to as post polio syndrome. If someone has post polio syndrome, they are losing "voltage" to power the muscles. That being said, if someone is experiencing post polio syndrome I would recommend to go through a thorough movement assessment by a physical therapist, identify the most problematic movement problems (that would correlate to the muscles that are losing their "power source"). After that, it would be a combination of corrective exercises, and protecting joints that are vulnerable to injury. I hope that is helpful. Long story short, I recommend getting back into PT if possible to come up with a plan to address the issues I stated above :)

  • @aaronoyster9627
    @aaronoyster9627 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dr. T., you said these exercises were for those of us in the early stage of recovery (where I assume the hand/fingers would likely be flaccid & thus, more pliable/willing to stay straight) so we can easily bear weight on it with the elbow immobilizer's assistance, yet what're we supposed to do if tone/spasticity doesn't allow us to keep the fingers straight & bear weight on the palm, SOL we have to do this with somebody's assistance?

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Aaron! that is an excellent question! You will need something to keep the hand open. If you are still in therapy, your therapist can show you ways to do this. If you do not have any tools to keep the hand open, yes, have someone help you get the hand flat and use sand bag weights to keep it open. I recommend you follow @the_road_to_recovery_2020 on insta. Keep in mind he is not a therapist, but he is certainly extremely creative in how he keeps his hand open. Also, keep in mind you can always do weight bearing through the elbow. I hope that all helps! Don't give up on these exercises! think outside the box as far as getting the arm into the correct positions. :)

      Hi Umesh! Glad to see you this week. That is a tough one to answer because there are so many things that can cause incontinence after a spinal cord injury. For example, the gladder is a muscle and some people have a "spastic" bladder where as others have a "bladder muscle" that doesn't work. Depending on the root cause will determine the treatment approach. Sorry I could not be more helpful.
