This would be a great action in Apple Shortcuts. Especially, because you are able to automate when leaving specific locations now e.g. if I leave my friends house, automatically send a Check-In to my friend

That’s great info, thanks. It’d also be a great idea to allow sending these notifications to users that don’t have an iPhone: details might be less or none, but being able to send them an automated message (plain old sms) at your arrival or if delayed would be somehow “easy” to implement, making this feature way more usable (in the USA there might be so many iPhone users that the chances of requiring to send a notification to an Android user are minimal, but that’s not the case in all regions) :)
You can do that using automation in Shortcuts.
@@pavelkovar great point, thanks! I was just suggesting that they provided such feature out of the box (my guess is that most iPhone users have never even opened the shortcuts app, to be fair)
also the fact they cant even show you the battery percentage number lol

Wish it could do this automatically. Also wish for an option that I can do check in “after” I arrive instead of doing it before I start traveling. Thanks for the tips though.

Great feature! However, I am regulary traveling by train where gps connection is very bad. After 15 min I get the message that it looks I am delayed, with two options: end checkin or add time. But I am on time, just gps is behind. Would be nice to have a third option like I am still on time.

A very useful and reassuring iOS 17 feature, thank you.
Please note that the Check In sender must have their Cellular data plan enabled and Location Services turned on.
You will have to use Check In Timer, not Check In Location, for those early morning walks as when leaving the house your destination will be too close and you will get an error. I had to walk 1/2 mile before I could start Check In using location.
Apple, it just 'sometimes' works...
I found a few other things in my testing:
A Check In iMessage creator can only send a message to a single person at a time
- During that time, they still can RECEIVE Check In messages from others
Multiple Check In iMessage creators can send to the SAME person during the same time period
To send a Check In iMessage to a person, they must be in your Contacts and have exchanged at least one message with you

When I want to take a walk and let my flatmate know when I'll be back, I can't start Check In right from the start but have to wait until I'm a little away from home. That should be fixed with an update!

What about checkin for flights? Would be good to be able to check the progress of flights and get notified using this feature. I know other apps do it but would be good for native support through messages.
There’s been native support for checking flight status in Messages for a few years now! Just include the flight number in a message (like DL5132) or something like that, and it appears as a little underlined “link” you can click to see live flight status. It would be nice if they updated that feature to allow you to opt into notifications for that flight, though!

The thing I hate about this is, sometimes it won't send when I tap the button. So I press again and again thinking it's not sending.
So, it ends up send 5 or 6 all at once.

For me, the check in doesn't ask me to add any time and adds it automatically. I wanted to try to simulate the situation where you dont respond but I could not figure out why it did not trigger any alerts even when I went off track for a long time. Check in did not ask me to add time but just added it automatically and pretended nothing is wrong... Both iPhone 14 Pros with latest iOS 17 version installed.
When you send a Check In, there’s an edit button. You can specify a period of time by clicking this button. If you don’t end the Check In before the time you set, Check In notifies your friend.

My phone for some reason popped that up in a message with my dispatch. I don’t know why I just turned on my screen and it gave me a suggestion to do that and then pop that up. Don’t know why it would for my job but I deleted the check in on the message
Is there a check In option when phone connects to a certain WIFI instead of location/timer? This would be more accurate because it would mean you are inside the house safe.

Great feature Android do it
This should be sent as an iCloud link to non-Apple users to view on the website. Safety is priority and shouldn’t be kept in the walled garden.

This is great and all but sounds waaaaaay to complicated with way too many steps.
How would you optimize it?
It's just like sending an iMessage to a friend with some additional details, but it includes a useful feature of alerting them if you don't arrive on time.
I just send a text message.
it's a nice feature...but such a shame that it can't work with other devices... not everyone owns an apple phone... so my android friends and family wont get alerted...
might as well stick to the old fashion why - just send a message that im on my way and if im late they will message or call me

Your friend just needs one device. An iPhone with iOS 17, OR an iPad with iPadOS 17 OR a Mac with MacOS Sonoma
