Saw Yngwie last month in Ft. Lauderdale. Believe me, he still smokes anyone out there. 2 hours of non stop shred. It's not for everyone, but for those that can take it it's a spectacle to behold. Buckethead comes close, but even he has to take a break every few songs. Yngwie continually assaults you sonically without mercy with endless cascading flurries of flame and fury. 🤘🤘

@@MikeTigges-dq9ve At his age I doubt he'd be willing to cut heads with Yngwie. An amazing player in his day though. I saw Al Di Meola back in January, and he sat down the whole show playing acoustic. It was great, but not what I'd call a shred fest. The thing about Yngwie is that he's relentless. The onslaught never ceases.
Buckethead has an advantage though. Buckethead writes leagues above yngwie. Not only can he shred, but can also write music. Almost 600 albums worth. Iv listened to everything from yngwie, and about 2/3 of Buckethead. It's no comparison really.
And that's what sucks about YM. His only really good work imo is Black star, Far beyond the sun and Icarus' dream suite no4. Which makes you wonder...@@EarthAltar
I was shredding hard back in 2016 I went to see Yngwie live.. I thought in my mind I was finally as good as Yngwie. After 4 minutes he shredded so much and flawless Execution.. I said dang I guess not and just soaked in the rest of the show l.. he was great in 2022 when I saw him last and his vocals are cool to hear 🐉✨🎸

you've got to remember that yngwie is also playing with a sht tonne of gain. with single coils. the fact any of it still sounds remotely clean while he is prancing around is an achievement in itselt.
He uses stacked humbuckers that sound like a single coil now. But yes, he used singles for a long time.

Never saw YJM in his “ prime”. I saw him 2 yrs ago and again a few weeks ago. Absolutely crushed it at The Parker in Sept2023....so in my view he’s improved with age. Go see him live; you won’t regret it.
I was lucky to have seen him play at the start of 1985 on the Rising Force tour in a small club, I'm sorry to report that he cannot play anywhere like he did back then, now. He was absolutely unbelievable, he was never quite the same after his car accident.
I saw him at his absolute peak in Jan of 1987 he was unbelievable but then a few months later he had his car accident and was never the same. 86 to 87 was insane he is just a shadow of his former self now.
I never will understand why so many say he ´s playing with no feeling. Just watch him perform! Pure feeling mixed with full control of his instrument Just perfect!
Especially what he played on the track "Marching out" !(on the record of the same title)
That track is 100% pure feeling and may be his best!

I have the same shirt from the '96 inspiration world tour. it was the first time I saw him live when I was 17!
Personally I think its not the technique that seperate young and old Yngwie, its the phrasing. In the 80s his phrasing was phenomenal and created a very strong sense of musical arc into the solo. Nowdays I feel theres less of that and his solos sound more like a lot of notes stringed up together without any greater musical plan. And it becomes boring quite quickly.
Yes! 1986 was prime Yngwie, before the car accident. Trilogy tour was on another level with his phrasing and techique !
Yes, his technique is still impeccable, but the tone has changed (possibly due to the newer Seymour Duncan YJM pickup's?). His earlier stuff kicked butt because it was fresh, and many of us here were in our younger, impressionable years, so it tends to stick with us as being amazing, just as how any young person now a days is impressionable with what they hear/see. I've been listening to him since I was 12 yrs old in 1991, and have followed him all these years, and yes the newer stuff just isn't as catchy unfortunately. I still buy his albums on CD to support him. He is still the driving force behind my practicing on guitar and likely always will be.

My cousin who played guitar at a very high level at the time and even went to an elite music college, and in the heyday of the guitar shredders in the 80s, when the guitar virtuosos were at the height of their popularity and Shrapnel records was at its apogee, he saw Yngwie Malmsteen live at the height of his powers and then subsequently he saw him multiple times through the years and he said that after he came back from the car accident in the late 80s, while still a great player, he was never at quite the same level as before and never got back to it since.
Accident, age, alcohol (he drinked too much at one point).

Trilogy was the peak don't think there's much disagreement about it ... most interesting is listening to the track 'Marching Out' to hear Yngwie playing outside his usual mode choices, such a lot of potential there we never heard from again.
Odyssey had the most catchiest songs in 1 album tho... he still opens with rising force the song til this day from that album

I think he was great and still hungry up to Eclipse and by Fire and Ice, it started to get a little old. Still had some bangers on some albums though but everything started to get rushed.
His car accident was between Trilogy and Odyssey. He was never the same after that.

I've seen Yngvie live only once in the 1989 with his best setup after his best record Odyssey with Joe Lynn Turner and the old band, including Jens Johanssen. Based on watching recent stuff in TH-cam, I believe that he is somehow back to track in 2023. Today I am really liking his music and muscial views too. Maybe he is getting old (like myself), so he has picked up some nice sense of humor and self irony to his playing. I don't know, but 5 years ago I did not really listen to him.Now in 2023 I feel like a fan again.

He was asked recently in an interview where the name "NEO" classical came from and he said he had no idea, that he had never heard of it and had no idea what it was supposed to mean!
I'm 1/3 his age and I can't play his stuff at 1/3 of the speed while sitting down in my bedroom so yeah I'd say he can still shred lol

recently learned he's 6ft 3 in ! big hands with a delicate touch .
More than just his hands...He suffered a very traumatic head injury damaging his brain to the point he nearly died.
Joe Lynn Turner was interviewed about the Odyssey period recently, and he related that there was a point the surgeons at Northridge Hospital didn't expect YJM to pull through.
Even once he did get out of critical condition, the damage to brain impacted the neurology of his right side. His pick hand was virtually unusable. He tried to comeback early by playing "Man on the Silver Mountain" as a guest with Dio at Itvine Meadows, and pretty much played the entire song with his fret hand. When he went to do the solo, he failed at a sweep kick straight our the gate because his hands couldn't synchronize, and Ronnie ran up Tngwie, through his arm around his shoulder, and yelled, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Yngwie Malmsteen!", so the crowd would roar as cover while Craig Goldy finished the solo.
I remember GIT instructor, Steve Trovato saying he loaned Yngwie a PRS he had just bought to use while he rehabbed his pick hand, but then the Whittier Narrows Earthquake happened, and Yngwie got spooked, and left town to be with relatives in Upstate NY (he stayed there about a year before relocating to Miami)...I think Trovato ever got that guitar back!
Eventually, Malmsteen managed to redevelop his right hand picking technique. There is probably an argument that he is somewhat of a medical miracle. His career very easily could have ended after that fateful night in 1987.
In my opinion as a longtime fan, I don't think the issue is whether or not he can still shred, so much as whether or not the brain injury effected his musicality. To me his playing seems more rushed, certainly busier as far as notes per measure go, and often lack the space/rest combined with melodic twists and turns that made so many of us hang on every note he produced in the mid-80s.
You will hear a lot of us describe him as having been untouchable during that period. Watching him nowadays is very much akin to comparing Fat Elvis to Skinny Elvis. He is still technically phenomenal, but has become something less musically.
My suspicion is that he has CTE or some other permanent, degenerative neurological injury. I base that admitted speculation on both his playing and some of his aberrant and anger-related behaviors in the years since the accident. With a degenerative condition the progression is not always a straight, descending line. Sometimes, he can still show flahes of his old self--That is his baseline condition, but over time he has shown this weird tendency to just play incessantly, which despite what his detractors may say, is not at all what he was about before the accident, such episodes may be previews of where his neurological state and perception (how he hears himself) is headed. Occasionally, he does seem slightly sloppy (compared to his younger self, not to we mortals!), which also may indicate degeneration.
All that said, this video was definitely more enjoyable than several recent videos of him I have seen, particularly the second half after he segued away from Rising Force, and if he never played another note, I would be thankful for Yngwie and his contributions to the musical world--He inspired a Helluva lot of us to either pick up the instrument, or to woodshed and get better.
In the last decade or more, Yngwie is releasing awful really terrible badly produced albums and his live band sucks compared to his classic line ups but at the end of the day, he is still a true pioneer and was ground breaking especially in the 80's!

I've seen YJM live five times, on Odyssey, Eclipse and Fire and Ice tours. Two ones I don't remember exactly anymore, maybe it was Inspiration and Unleash the Fury tours. Best show was the Eclipse tour show when it comes to guitar performance. He was still quite young and vicious. Can't compare that to the neoclassical Las Vegas Elvis thing he is doing now.
Eclipse had such catchy material from beginning to end. One of his strongest.
I have think Yngwie has gotten better with age.
His band is absolutely phenomenal as well. Nothing slack about an Yngwie show.
I mean yes,he can still shred but he does seem to be rushing thru his tunes if thats even possible but over shreds during sections he used to have more phrasing but hes the oldest shredder left at these speeds and pieces of music.Hes still amazing and theres thousands of cookie cutter shredders out there but theres,only one Yngwie thaf plays these,licks with a stock coil strat n marshalls cranked to 11.He has like 25 albums and still touring n putting on great shows. The prodigy son still killing it

Saw him at the start of the month here in Ireland and was blown away! He put on a great show, agreed hes not what he once was but hes still probably one of the best I've seen live.

I saw Yngwie in NYC about 7 months ago open for Glen Hughes. I hate to say it but after Glen was finished I left about 1/2 way through Yngwie's set. After a while it's too much for the ear to continue to take a barrage of 16 notes. This is why Jeff Beck (RIP) will always be my favorite guitarist. I can listen to Jeff all day long without getting ear fatigue.

My answer for Yngwie as a big fan of his is he can still shred. Although he doesn't need to prove it cause he's done it. He's going to write music as he sees fit. We got his full solo guitar with Japanese Philharmonic orchestra album that he nailed. Years later in 2018 we got his blues album Blues Lighting. He played it very good. I saw that tour and Parrabellum at Center Stage in Atlanta. He hasn't lost a step and does the harmonic minor thing perfectly. Mastering the arpeggios and diminished runs. El Maestro that is Yngwie Malmsteen.
Saw him last year and that was exzactly how he did the show. He switched guitars a ton and was kicking picks to the crowd left and right. Tons of guitars spins on his neck. Maybe not as good as he was in the 80’s but fuck is he still solid

Do you think he's surpassed the man that influenced him , Uli Jon Roth? I'm just curious. I watched a video with Uli and I was impressed not only by his playing which seemed as if he played as if he was symbiotic with the orchestra but he also knew how to conduct it. So i thought that was cool. That said for shredding, Yngwie is the best! He was one of my first introductions to metal.

He's still a great player compared to others, but when I compare his current performance to how he played in 1986, I feel like he's not even 20% as good. However, rather than this being an insult to his current performance, I would say it's more of a compliment to just how unbelievably skilled he was back then.

Pretty sure the people saying he can't shred anymore are just cross-comparing him to the fellas who sweep pick their way into record contracts these days. Vngwie might be a dick sometimes, but he is a goat'ed maestro and there are very few who could wield an axe against him, never mind out shred him.

He can play with feel. He can play with taste and melody. He can master the guitar. He can write great songs and he's one of the best rythm guitarist ever. Problem is that he doesn't care about any of all that since long. He's there to melt your faces. Some like it, others find it boring which is quite understandable since it is!
