I wish Graham would have had more exposure. He is an under-appreciated singer by the masses. He played with two of the top 10 greatest shredders of all time. How many lead singers can say they played with two legends like Malmsteen and Vai? Not many. Roth; Plant; Ozzy; Dio; the list is short and I'm sure I'm missing a few.

@@JackMcLeodJr They’re a load of wasted potential. Alcatrazz were brilliant musicians (though I’m not a fan of Yngwie’s sloppy rhythm playing) but they really lacked the songwriting thing. The concepts behind their songs were extremely clever (I’m thinking Suffer Me, God Blessed Video, etc) but they just didn’t have all the prose in them to make them super relevant in terms of cleverness. Sort of relied on Graham’s work with Rainbow and Yngwie’s shit hot playing.
I think they got better songwriting-wise with Vai to be honest, and I know that this is a controversial opinion but I think they did better with Vai than they could have possibly done with Yngwie. The songs were cleverer and more eclectic, Vai’s style suited the band better than you might think, and I think he was a much better personality to work with as well. He’s better at working with other people than Yngwie. But it was clear he was gonna go and do bigger things than Alcatrazz in his career. That’s what Graham said, Alcatrazz was a bit of a stepping stone for guitarists who went on to do great things whilst they stayed in the shitter.
Yep, Alcatrazz is pretty unique. But I don’t think the working relationship between them was very healthy. I think Bonnet wanted to make Alcatrazz as a “fuck you” response to Blackmore to firing him from Rainbow, I mean he literally said Alcatrazz was meant to be like Rainbow. And it’s probably things like this that are why the band just hasn’t worked the way it should. Bonnet wanted better than Waldo and Shea, Jan Uvena’s been all but forgotten and Yngwie just wanted to be the centre stage. It’s really sad, now that Bonnet’s split with Waldo and Shea. Doogie White’s the best possible replacement for him, but Graham’s just something else. This band should’ve really been something special.

That Ted Nugent and Alcatrazz show was great, I saw them in '84 at the Rocky Glen Park in Moosic, PA. for like $15 which included admission to the park too, but it ended up pouring rain out so the only ones who lucked out were us fans who were inside watching the show while all the park goers were stranded huddling under cover to get out of the rain.

In the live version of Alcatrazz playing “Lost In Hollywood”, he literally cuts out right in front of Graham, nearly knocking him over. If that’s not evidence that Yngwie was the asshole in that band, I don’t know what is.
I know Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea have claimed otherwise, but it sounds to me like they just want to try and defuse the gossip about how poorly Malmsteen treated them.

A few years ago when graham told this story he was a lot more friendly about it . I think he was trying to get Yngwie to do a reunion show or something because he tells the story a little differently . Yngwie is amazing . I’m sure he had a lot of stress and I play lead guitar and sing myself . It isn’t cool to play leads over the verses it messes the singer up and it’s not the place for it . Yngwie still does it even when he himself is singing . The G3 dvd is killer my singer friend got all mad when Yngwie was playing over the verse . Lol . He doesn’t like the neoclassical style or Yngwie . He was really mad when he kept playing leads and we were just watching lol

Vai made Alcatrazz more of a band than just a front for a guitarist and vocalist. If you watch the Alcatrazz footage with Yngwie, notice that it’s almost impossible to see rest of the band because the cameras are so focused on what Yngwie’s doing. He’s just counting down the seconds before his guitar solo. With Vai, he puts as much energy into his rhythm parts as his guitar solos and the cameras were much focused on the rest of the band. Vai can share the spotlight, whereas Yngwie needs the entire stage to himself.

I played huge club Psycho Bunnies/Wanda Chrome and the Leather Pharaohs/Peter and the Test Tube Babies called Alcatraz somewhere in Fjord country. Crazed party. Vikings. Some giants. Must have been named after Yngwie album? the band? Or more unlikely the US federal prison. IDK the English wasn't real good way up there. Mid 90's. Had some weird preshow interview might have been on radio. I said I liked ABBA. My thought was it is actual punk rock to like ABBA, (behold a true rebel) ABBA did some great stuff if we are going to be honest about pop music. Whatever country they were from, that was where we were. Scandanavia?Oh yeah the question was "Which upcoming bands from Scandanavia do you prefer?" Wapatui, mosh pit blur of a night. I had to tell the punks not to spit at us. I meant it too. I don't know where they got their information that that was acceptable. Some kid moving his broken nose from side to side pogoing up in the mosh crowd calling and pointing at me saying "Chucka Berry Chucka Berry" ". I learned much later Peter and the Test Tube Babies always say it is their final show.
