With a world rife with cookie cutter shredders, Nuno sets himself apart by playing within the context of a given song. His playing is utterly brilliant and beautiful to listen to.

Exactly. So well said. The feel in that solo is just so........Nuno. You can whip up all the fancy notes you want but at the end of the day, that solo is so perfect for that song. Love it.

There is nothing memorable about this song other than Nuno can play. I think it's everything you say it isn't. It is Look What I Can Do. I don't think it fits or adds to an average song at best.
I'm a nearly 60 year old guitar player and seeing Nuno playing on "Rise" made me really excited and feel like the guitar solo is important again. Nuno kicks some serious ass!
I'm delighted to be able to tell you that as a 70 year old Guitarist; in 10 years time a solo of this potency and force will still make your hair (if any) stand on end! Rock On Brother. 😎
I’ve been going back to bands like Extreme and Mr. Big lately, bands that weren’t as big as Guns ‘n Roses and Metallica at that time, but have amazing musicians and songs. Underrated at that time, because they became famous with ballads and Grunge was on the rise. Their music has aged well. I feel a retrospective review and re-evaluation is in place for these bands.
Nuno is the real deal. Always has been. And he gets it. He really gets it. He’s not just an amazing guitar player he’s an amazing musician. He gets that that there needs to be a good song to be remembered. There are many technically proficient players out there today but they aren’t been heard because they are playing music that’s not accessible to most or the songs just are memorable 🤷♂️. Some of it is just technique for the sake of it. Nuno comes from a time where the song comes first and then the solo basically lifts the song up and takes it to another place. And this is what he does here. Many people think the song is just ok, but the solo definitely elevates it
I see that argument. To me it just sounds like they hired a pop/rock songwriter and producer to make it very watered down and boring. Neat solo. Terribly generic song.
Absolutely amazing! I feel like that first few seconds of the solo was a tribute to Eddie, then the rest was Nuno showing the world that he hasn't been slacking off for 15 years since Saudades de Rock. He's definitely giving this generation a run for their money.
It sounded like EVH paired with any random 80s/90s band like Soundgarden, POD, or a million others. Good for reminiscing if you like those eras, but nothing even vaguely new or interesting. Definitely not giving the new generation anything but the thought "Oh, boomer rock! I've never heard that before..."
Nuno has to be the most underrated guitarist ever… Ask people who the greatest players are and his name almost never comes up.. yet he is without a doubt one of the GOATS
@@DatBRejectz I disagree .. I lived through the Extreme era. Nuno was one of THE most revered and famous guitar players in the world at the time. On the cover of every major guitar mag etc. etc. People were playing Pornograffitti riffs in every guitar shop I walked into LOL! Every guitar player I know who has listened to him is wowed. I would never associate the word "underrated" with Nuno. He disappeared from high visibility because hi-tech rock died in the mid 90s and the entire guitar world shifted away from that type of playing for at least a decade. Hi tech playing has (thankfully) made a huge come back in the internet era - and because he is still very much cutting it - Nuno's back in the lime light.
Nuno has always been a legend on guitar. I felt the beginning of the solo was like an Eddie van halen tribute with the tremolo picking like in eruption. Plus nuno was great friends him. The other two released songs are very cool too & love the solos on them also. Can't wait to hear the whole album while driving.
they were such an underrated talented group. they remind me of Van Halen in so many ways. not just being great guitar work, but how they group just dynamically worked off of each other. Synergy and talent. Lead singer was amazing vocals, and the entire group just synergized so well together. And they were never afraid to explore different aspects of their music.
Extreme were the natural progression from the Van Halen 1 & 2 sound, Nuno took the next step with some of his shredding, the funkiness & all. Definitely almost a sonic "heir" to Van Halen.
@@harleyhunt6073 I agree completely, especially with the funk aspect. VanHalen was amazing, but also a very classic rock guitar player. Nuno took that and added his own sense of funk and groove that I just love listening to.
Well the reason they fizzled out was Grunge. I lived through those years man .. Grunge utterly KILLED all the hi tech hi talent rock music I loved, and I despised Grunge for doing that. I remember how music mags started pouring scorn on hi tech rock - damn, I even remember one reviewer utterly ridiculing Nuno Bettencourt's playing. That's why Rick Beatto pisses me off .. cos he keeps going on about how "modern music sucks", yet it was Grunge (that he produced) that completely destroyed the highest tech rock of the early 90s.
@@zx7-rr486 it's a shame that bands allowed themselves to be curtailed by it. If we dig deeper we can find a lot of amazing rock, metal and otherwise throughout the music scene, more underground than playing stadiums or charging up the radio rock charts. A lot of bands made music through the 90s & pressed on. It still doesn't quite make sense to me why bands fell off, gave up or what seemed to me in most cases to try and adopt new elements (Motley Crue, Dokken for example).
I was blown away by this new Extreme stuff ...If this was released 30 years ago it would be a double platinum album for sure ! ..These guys actually sound better then they did in the 80s and 90s and that is unbelievable! ....Thanks extreme we all needed this!
This is the best analysis of Nuno's solo I have seen yet. Thank you Herman for such a detailed and insightful analysis. And yes, I loved your interview of Nuno. If I remember correctly, he called you the Oprah Winfrey of rock. LOL Now will the mainstream rock stations play it?
If you had told me a couple years ago that Extreme was going to put out a new album and that the first few singles would be lighting youtube on fire before the album even dropped, i never would have believed it. Ive loved this band since i was a kid and Nuno is one of the best. Always felt like Gary got a raw deal in VH too, hes an amazing singer/lyricist. Love this comeback!
What a great review of Nuno's talent! I really liked the breakdown when you showed how some people can play the same notes and they are "non-dynamic" and why. I never noticed that he has his guitar so low either... Your facial expressions cracked me up! I can hear this whole song in my sleep now that I've watched the video so many times. The entire CD is fabulous!
Absolutely love this review and I was so happy to hear Herman reference Play With Me! It was also exactly where I went when I first listened to this new song. Truly inspiring.
I heard this song the day it came out by chance, I'm a keyboardist and I immediately contacted all my guitar buddies and sent them links to this song! I was blown away by that solo! The song itself is overall awesome!

Herman hit the nail on the head. Nuno is truly inspiring. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years and nuno always inpires me to pick up the guitar and play and learn new things. Nuno keep doing what you do.
Love this! Nuno is is a technical virtuoso. But he puts so much feeling and emotion into his playing. Spectacular! Im 64 years old, been playing since age 8 and wish I could do even 1/8 of what you professional shredders can do. Great video!

@DragonForce I've met Nuno Bettecourt VERY MANY a time when he came through the Detroit Michigan area and actually was a local stage tech for one of your shows here in the Detroit Michigan area at Pine Knob Music Theater outside amphitheater.
I was a teen when their first album came out and they have always been an outstanding band. I remember the first time hearing "kid ego" and was blown away. Awesome band and so glad their new record is SO good.
This solo comes around like a first take recording - it sounds so fresh and spontanious. Although real great technique at the same time...🤓👍🎸He's hitting his Washburn Signature model...
that solo has it all: technique, feel, phrasing and the overall vibe is so exciting, just like Van Halen was on the first five albums. Lots of fire there!
I'm not that into heavy guitar but I like it when guys have nothing but respect for others talent,it's all about interpritationand where an artist is coming from and leading to . Love your work Herman.
I remember waiting up all night, waiting to record Boston's 'More than a feeling' on a cassette player way back then. Growing with players like Beck, Morse, .. Then EVH turned my world upside down. Nuno showed up and I spent way too many hours learning his stuff. And your closing statement, yes, it brings back those memories and the feeling of raised hairs on my neck.
What's great about that solo is it's serving a function in the song... it's always about the song... It takes you on journey, it's showing you a piece of the landscape of the song... in this case it's the trial by fire that comes with fame, which is what the song is about. And I completely agree Herman, it takes you back to a time when guys like Eddie Van Halen were playing an amazing guitar in these amazing timeless songs... there are a million amazing guitar players out there, but there aren't a million amazing songwriters... a 40 second video of extreme shredding over a chord progression is an instrumental piece... this... is a guitar solo.
From the series "I didn't know we could do that on the guitar"... Nuno amazes me, especially for not knowing formal theory (according to himself as of last week) and still getting such cool harmonization tricks. Awesome. Cheers !!!
Great comments made by Herman. I’ve been playing for 30 years and graduated from Berklee in 2004 and play shows and teach for a living myself. When I heard that solo, it really makes me want to learn how he played it, especially the cool second half classicalish sounding bit with open strings. Lots of players on utube and Instagram tryin to play it but I’m 99% sure they are all doing it wrong. Sick playing.
I'm so glad you interviewed nuno and it's nice to see today's shredders tipping the cap to the Legends. He plays his guitar like a virtuoso not just fast but soulfulky, and so difficult at the same time.
Couldn't agree more. And, to her another great, professional guitarist give props to Nuno's playing and musicality is a testament to your sincere integrity. Much respect to you, Herman, always the consummate gentleman and professional.
Agree with you completely. With Nuno and all the details infused in his playing it gives you a perfect sense of location (of where you are in the song).
When you talk about the Bends and how he makes the guitar sing, that is 100% accurate listen to his solos in both rebel and banshee and he is absolutely talking with that guitar along with the pyrotechnics!
Great analysis! It's nice to see someone who knows the band do a reaction to their new material I would love to know your thoughts on the two newer ones
Herman picked out the exact Extreme song that this song/solo reminded me of: Play With Me. The energy and vibe is 100% dialed-in. It's really great to see and hear Nuno getting his due in the music world which has been long overdue. At least main stream. Everyone outside of main stream already knew this. But now... it's coming around and he put one hell of a stamp on it.
I agree with you 100percent. It's fresh. But it has a Edward van Halen feal. I'm for sure a fan of this. I loved the whole song the first time I hurd it. And I keep listening to it over and over. Great shit mate!!!!!!!
In the guitar community he has always been in the Top 5 of GOATs. Just glad the new generation is waking up to it now. Nuno took boomer bends to next level and layered blistering palm muting runs!
Nuno is the best. It's good to see Extreme back in the saddle again. Not only is this body of work going to sell, it's pumping all of us older guys up as well as draw new listeners in. Yeah, this is old school... Herman.... Your Also a BADASS!!! Thank you for your inspiration also😊
Very variative style in every chords...its not boring and if i listen the song for the first time, i cant guess where he move the next chords...he crazee very much...love you all ..
Herman, I love how you review music. You articulate things that my ears pick up on, but my mind doesn't understand. I appreciate you brother! Also, really liking what I've heard of the new Extreme album.
When he went into the 'palm muting' mode- 6:42 , the effects were changed, more Digital Delay was added. Still, very interesting dynamics and time changes throughout the solo. Sounded a little bit like Warren Martini at the beginning, for a few licks.
i’m from the VH generation… Lynch, Vito Bratta, Yngwie (spelling), Gilbert, Eric Johnson, Rhodes, Satch, Vai, Reb, etc. i hit a wall and gave up playing … but can still hear guitar parts separately from the rest of the instruments… which kills me how i couldn’t get what was in my head to my fingers. All good tho watching all u young guys jam. Nuno shows like the OG of the 80s like u said it’s not all about speed… dynamics… everyone seems like they when to the Guitar Institute Extreme 6 is probably my favorite album of theirs… probably favorite in a long time.
Great analysis Herman, especially coming from a legend like yourself! I also like how Nuno does not keep things static and just repeats, which is so much lacking since the mid-90s I would say.
Nuno's greatest gift is expressing the emotions of the song in his solos. If it's a song about anger, the solo feels angry. if it's a song about loneliness, the solo feels lonely. He's not just showing off how fast he can shred. He just perfectly captures the mood in his melodies.
It's probably Gary's voice he's got that Seattle sound which is another Main Attraction all of our main Seattle singers are dead except for Eddie Vedder and he's not really that good

Thats amazing !!!
Same! Play with Me is my favorite guitar solo ever!
I'm so glad you interviewed nuno and it's nice to see today's shredders tipping the cap to the Legends. He plays his guitar like a virtuoso not just fast but soulfulky, and so difficult at the same time.
I remember when I saw the video clip More than Words first back in 1991... and these guyz are still here... awsome
Haha he is talking about Tim Henson and the boomer bends reference. The new generation doesn't do it that much.
Herman Li, master of detailed observation & elaborated analysis,
.
At last ! I hv. been waiting for your reaction to this song for some time ! Solid analysis - Tks
U did awesome running through this song👍💥🙌🎉
This is first time I watched any of your reviews, I really enjoyed it and man your studio looks awesome, Love your playing as well Mr Lee!
Waiting for the punchline is the benchmark. Best extreme album
It's one of the most exciting solos I've heard in over 10 years plus.....
Great analysis! It's nice to see someone who knows the band do a reaction to their new material I would love to know your thoughts on the two newer ones
Wait till you here the rest, HOLYSTUFF! More hooks than a bait shop! He has an incredible internal groove. Best Wishes Mr. Li!!
Very cool to hear an amazing player appreciate another amazing player
I agree with you 100percent. It's fresh. But it has a Edward van Halen feal. I'm for sure a fan of this. I loved the whole song the first time I hurd it. And I keep listening to it over and over. Great shit mate!!!!!!!
In the guitar community he has always been in the Top 5 of GOATs. Just glad the new generation is waking up to it now. Nuno took boomer bends to next level and layered blistering palm muting runs!
Amazing! One of the pioneers 🙌🏼
SUPERB ANALYZATION, MR. LI ! Reading, PA AUGUST 8th. I AM THERE!!!
Wow wow woooow j’adore !
Great reac to a great guitar player by a great guitar player !
Kiss From France
Nuno is the best. It's good to see Extreme back in the saddle again. Not only is this body of work going to sell, it's pumping all of us older guys up as well as draw new listeners in. Yeah, this is old school...
Herman.... Your Also a BADASS!!! Thank you for your inspiration also😊
Very variative style in every chords...its not boring and if i listen the song for the first time, i cant guess where he move the next chords...he crazee very much...love you all ..
They came to my hometown... @Shirock India. It was magical..
Herman, I love how you review music. You articulate things that my ears pick up on, but my mind doesn't understand. I appreciate you brother! Also, really liking what I've heard of the new Extreme album.
Loved your reactions, input, and analysis. Nuno raised the bar with this one….
When he went into the 'palm muting' mode- 6:42 , the effects were changed, more Digital Delay was added.
Still, very interesting dynamics and time changes throughout the solo. Sounded a little bit like Warren Martini at the beginning, for a few licks.
Correction : Warren Demartini of Ratt
First saw Nuno with Gen Axe.
Blown away.
Went to see Steve, but Nuno was my favorite that night! This man oozes music!
Herman is a legend. A more humble man in rock you will not find......and Nuno effectively walks on water.
i’m from the VH generation… Lynch, Vito Bratta, Yngwie (spelling), Gilbert, Eric Johnson, Rhodes, Satch, Vai, Reb, etc. i hit a wall and gave up playing … but can still hear guitar parts separately from the rest of the instruments… which kills me how i couldn’t get what was in my head to my fingers. All good tho watching all u young guys jam.
Nuno shows like the OG of the 80s like u said it’s not all about speed… dynamics… everyone seems like they when to the Guitar Institute
Extreme 6 is probably my favorite album of theirs… probably favorite in a long time.
Great analysis Herman, especially coming from a legend like yourself! I also like how Nuno does not keep things static and just repeats, which is so much lacking since the mid-90s I would say.
Gary 's Voice Blends so well with Nuno's
Extreme never missed a beat after so long between albums
Saw them live & they did not Disappoint
You own such a beautiful Padauk N4 !❤❤❤
Nuno's greatest gift is expressing the emotions of the song in his solos. If it's a song about anger, the solo feels angry. if it's a song about loneliness, the solo feels lonely. He's not just showing off how fast he can shred. He just perfectly captures the mood in his melodies.
Nuno, your favorite guitarist's favorite guitarists
Love Nuno and the bands playing. Btw as far as the song writing overall I hear a hint of STP (one of the many underrated bands of the 90's) in there.
It's probably Gary's voice he's got that Seattle sound which is another Main Attraction all of our main Seattle singers are dead except for Eddie Vedder and he's not really that good
now that you mention it.. totally... especially the Purple album like idk, Unglued maybe
Extreme has always been ahead of thier time
Can't wait for this album.
