I have to say, you've taken an old movie that I haven't thought of in ages and turned it into something I want to sit down with the family and watch a new.

I guess I was about 5 or 6 when my dad bought home a brown paper bag with a copy of Gremlins on VHS. I was told it was a pirate video and I could watch the tape, but I had to keep it to myself or my dad would get into trouble.
I watched the movie and loved it, but I was confused. When dad took back the tape he asked me if I enjoyed the movie, I replied yes, but where were the pirates?
To this day I still get a funny look from dad if anyone mentions pirated media.

1984 from a broad Hollywood feature film perspective was a very strong year for Summer releases.
A number of films like Ghostbusters, Temple Of Doom, Star Trek 3, did very well even the ones that didn't do well like Streets of Fire were good.

great stuff. In the UK some fools were arguing for the film to be banned as the whole hysteria about video nasties was going on at the time. In the end it was given a 15 certificate.
Also I think you're right about The 'Burbs. I've seen it countless times!

I only recently joined your channel with your Alien 3 retrospective. Although that movie had it's flaws, I've always loved it. I already follow several really good movie retrospective channels and am so impressed with your work, a lot of detail but such a warm delivery. I'm a child of the 80's and this was on TV so often at Christmas time. I have such fond memories of it and even though I haven't seen it in years I would happily sit down and watch it now. There are movies that are supposed to be deep and meaningful, but sometimes movies like these can often have their depth and detail ignored. Thank you for putting in the effort. There are some amazing movies in your back catalogue and I really look forward to having more time to explore them.

I really appreciate your thoughts, James. I'm also glad you're here with us as well. The other day I was contemplating the views certain movies get and my Gremlins series, like Galaxy Quest didn't really get much traction and I kind of anticipated that before I released them. For a moment I hesitated on my next script which I was 10 pages into and that was for the 1985 film Weird Science because I thought, not many are going to watch it. I quickly realized that this channel is about celebrating fine films and their possible depths. So, I quickly ignored my hesitation over views because whether it gets a large audience or not there are folks like you and I who love a lot of these old films and they deserve exploring. Seeing your post just proved my conclusion and like all those who commented here I thank you.

@21:28 Robby the Robot must be a callback to the show Columbo. In the episode Mind Over Mayhem, Robby is in it along with a character named Steven Spellberg. That itself is a callback to Steven Spielberg who directed the first episode of Columbo.

Great video as always! But no mention of James Mackrell’s cameo at the end as Lew Landers, effectively placing Gremlins and The Howling in the same universe?! 😅

I am actually wondering if the studio would have kept the first draft to make the film, would Gremlins have been some teen horror comedy that was barely remembered? It’s really amazing how Spielberg got a hold of the story and made it so palatable for mass audiences. Spielberg is responsible for pretty much all movie memories of Gen Xers when they were younger.

Interesting divergence with the novelization with the actual movie.
The idea of the Gremlins as interstellar Aliens would work but if that were made, it would turn the movie into something like Critters frankly.

What was the bit about Dante moving to West point to get to know his father better? How he and his sister saved up money to see Ghostbusters instead of Gremlins? Is Dante referring to the director? How come he had to rely on money from his father?

This has to be one of the dumbest comments I have ever seen on a video. You are actually noting that you can't pay attention or relate to another human who is relaying their experience with a movie. That is your big contribution to the discussion? LOL
