    Richard Marquand may be the most under appreciated and least discussed of all the major players in Star Wars history.

    Rewatched the original theatrical last night, before your video appeared via the YT algorithm. As usual while watching, the Ewwww...oks appear out of nowhere, the film falls apart (for me) and I zone and groan out. The choices that finish the trilogy in this (what appears to be 'let's get this over with everyone') trite fashion baffle; whether it's a movie for 12 year olds or not! I suppose, the mild consolation is, it doesn't look like the prequels... but still, it's a shame the saga wasn't capped off with the hoped for, satisfying glory

    He was facing the same thing back then, everyone was just about politics, and pandering. The art form , the CONCENTRATION, was preserved because of Lucas, a true artist: who in his fight against the money and control, ended up with all the power.

      they think things have gone "woke" and it was all good back in the day.
      Nope!
      Lucas had issues FROM DAY ONE!
      questions questions from the studio:
      "Why isn't the Wookiee wearing any pants"
      "Our survey says that films with War in the title don't succeed."

    I know it’s not related to Jedi, but to me, I’ve always put Temple of Doom up with Raiders in my mind. Sure it may be dark but it has just as much action and the ending is incredible. I also like Willie more than Marion, you can see her get braver throughout the movie especially when she kicks that Thugee off the minecart.

    Personally, I've always said that Lucas may have CREATED Star Wars, but I don't think he ever truly understood the RESULT of it. He always saw Star Wars as a kid's movie, and as someone who first saw the original in the theatres when I was 10 or 11, I'd agree. It has all the tropes the tropes of kid's shows like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, mixed with daredevil fighter plane combat from the popular war movies like The Battle of Britain, mixed with Ancient Greek Tragedies that are timeless, mixed with Kurasawa Samurai movies and swash-buckling Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn movies. It's an amalgam of all these popular tropes, made in space. It all sounds a bit silly, and it is! But John Williams' scores elevated it way beyond that and gave it a sense of grandeur that had been missing in 1977.
    Empire Strikes Back changed it all, the kids had grown up somewhat and wanted more adult content and they got it. The scenes with Yoda on Dagobah elevated the concepts to a deep dive into good vs evil, giving it an almost religious context. Unfortunately, Lucas still thought of it as kid's movies, and a way to sell merchandise, with the rescue of Han and the Ewoks as a way to sell toys. But us fans continued to grow up and as we did, we wanted more adult content. Lucas instead went back to the silly droids and Gungans in Episode 1. The Prequel trilogy had a great story, but it was executed poorly in my opinion.

    I'm 50 years old and I saw Return of the Jedi six times in the theater when it came out and it's one of those movies that you thought was absolutely fantastic when you we're a kid and I thought it was the best Star Wars movie. Then in the 90s I started to think it wasn't that great.
    Then the sequels came in holy shit Return of the Jedis back at being a solid number 3

      One of my favourite games, which no one else seems to like is Star Wars: Rebellion. If you don't know it, it's an RTS game with also some space battles. It's a really good game and it's crying out for a remake with modern graphics for the battles and maybe some changes to the AI to make it a bit harder. It's one of those games where you can play for 12 hours straight and get lost in the missions. I love it.

    No disrespect but David Lynch wasn't being honest when he said he didn't want to direct because of Lucas and the Ewoks giving him a headache.
    According to Haward Kazanjian's book, he actually accepted the job but then quickly turned it down because he didn't want to work with John Williams and Ben Bert.
    In other words, he wanted 100% control of the film's sound.

    • @RepresentThis
      @RepresentThis  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I took no side as I just stated the different views so there is no possibility for disrespect. There are more views other than just Kazanjian's and one was that Lynch was using the Jedi offer as a bargaining chip for more money and control for Dune. People can explore that stuff if they want to look deeper into the issue. Everyone must decide for themselves what to believe and if you subscribe to your point who am I to dissuade you as I'm not going to pick a side on this. I was not there and don't know who is factual and who is not. Someone is not being honest and I'm not that judge.

    • @lloydshanahan154
      @lloydshanahan154 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RepresentThis Ok, I wasn't being confrontational either. I am very aware that the original trilogy era Star Wars films are notorious for having behind the scenes drama with conflicting information due to people constantly saying, "He Said", "She Said", and so on.
      It's one of those, the more you learn the less you know kind of scenarios. due to how unusually ambitious these films were and how both wildly and un-expectedly popular they became.
      As for me I trust Kazanjian given he tends to be the man in the middle that gets ignored a lot. Plus he has a way better track record for honesty then both George Lucas and (especially) Gary Kurtz combined.
      That's why I tend to side with him and James Marquand a lot more when it comes to the subject of Episodes 5 and 6.

      I think in many instances it makes me love them more because one can appreciate what the actors or makers put into it. I will say I was sad to find out that Lucas constantly changed his narratives in my studies and that Prowse died without resolution, but the honor to Prowse is to appreciate him as Vader in the end in my eyes. I guess I turn the negative into a positive in my mind. I also will say looking at this stuff and the drama is miniscule compared to modern day films which are full of divisiveness in the media on both sides. Thanks for your insights.

      @@RepresentThis I admire your position. Working in the entertainment industry I experience the dissonance between production, direction and actors on a daily basis and it leaves me baffled, how much loss there is in terms of energy, motivation, vision and money. It always leaves me with two questions: is it really necessary? Meaning is it human nature, and systemic, or a result of ego and bad management? And, how much better could the final product be, if everyone would be pulling on the same string? I know some tension can be fruitful, and there are productions where too much freedom leads to a huge time sink for details, but maybe I just see too much of my own conflicts reflected in your documentary :D

That means you are not causing the BS and if everyone thought like you in Hollywood it would not be in the dire straits that we are seeing today IMO. In the end it is the struggle that often defines us so keep going and I would say look at the worst disaster films that turned out good for motivation like Jaws, Superman, Star Wars, etc. to keep you in the mindset to wade through it to hopefully be a part of a production that is significant and impactful to all. Really thankful for your insights.
