The funny thing to me about Morse surviving is that there's a scene earlier where Dillion calls him out for flippancy saying, "Oh, right, you're the guy who made a deal with God to live forever."
And then he's the only one who survives the movie.

For me Alien - Alien 3 is the best trilogy of all time, and I disregard anything after. All three are directed by 3 of the best Directors of all time, have great scores, great characters and other than a few nitpicks all three are masterpieces and stand atop in the horror/sci fi genres.

For me, once that initial shock in 1992 of Hicks and Newt being killed off as they were passed, it made sense. In Alien, Ash's awesome monologue; "A perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility. I admire its purity. A survivor. Unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality..." is one off the main ways the creature was so terrifying, it does what it does and couldn't care less what anyone thinks or cares about. So, for me, once that initial shock in 1992 of Hicks and Newt being killed off as they were, it made sense. The alien just did what we fear and love about it, it killed off what we care most for without conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.

I was terribly honest in my Alien video confessing that I was 7 when I saw it. I think I came out somewhat adjusted, but I let my kids see it when they were around 13 as I didn't want them to suffer the same fear I had for the movie. Still, your kids might be tougher than I was. Who knows maybe I was a wimp. :)

To me the only flaw this movie had is being ALIEN 3. If this was just a stand alone dark edge movie from early 90s i bet it was being in high regards. But the problem it was a "product" from the Alien Franchise, both critics and viewers are expecting more Cameron/Scott stuff... And worst a follow up to the previews movies.
Take all the elements of this movie and put in another universe and you have the perfect Sci-fi.

Just finished this video (sorry I forgot to comment on the previous one)
Got my notification from your video, got off work, midnight spark a J and played the video and the first comment was mine! I gotta THANK YOU for that, it truly has made me smile, I also thank you for sharing your personal story, this truly adds more weight for loving this movie, I still had goose bumps every time I hear Dylan's speed with Goldenthal crescendo epic score
The intense acting that was spot on!
Detailing the background on every prisoner was an amazing job
I gotta share my story, my mother went to see in theaters Alien³, the next morning she tried to give me some review of it and explained that the alien was more like a cockroach (the wall scenes with not so good CGI) anyway I was intrigued by it, when I watched on TV on cable that change me, to me is a story so bleak but so uplifting at the same time (I can hear the final song from Ripley's dead)
Sacrifice is the main theme for me on this film beside religion
The set is it's own character, it's so unique, that set actually gives me the chills, haunting and creepy
Thank you for covering some of the Workprint, yeah I think I have the same quality rip that is known going around, I hope a kind soul shares a good and you can make a good video out of it

In retrospect, the decision to killing Hicks and Newt doesn't seem so bad, it allowed the series to not become an Avatar-type adventure series. Nowadays it's rare to see a movie that decides not to give fans exactly what they want, to the point that many series are almost fanfics. I'm a fan of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, and I like the movies as they are, but the fact that the good characters are always safe by a magical shield takes away some of the suspense and excitement. You made a great work with this Alien 3 videos,I never saw anybody payong attention to the prisioners in Fury 161. and thanks for sharing your petsonal experience with the movie.

20:50 I always took this as Ripley hallucinating in the low light conditions. Granted it was never followed up on. She never seems to experience any other hallucinations. But she was clearly under a lot of stress as well as pregnant with the alien. It reminded me a bit about the line Kane has when he wakes up and says he had ‘a horrible dream about some other organism’ (or something to that effect). It made me think the alien embryo could have a subtle psychic effect on its carrier.

Little did I know this was Fincher. I loved the hopelessness and return to a single predator and no way out. Man vs monster. Sepia toned with a Ridley Scott professionalism. Not perfect, but pretty damn close.

I was already a huge fan of the first two movies when I saw Alien 3 at the movie theatre, we all came out of the theatre agreeing how much we enjoyed it. I was 21 at the time. I’ve seen it many times since then and get something new from it every time. I only watch the re-edit of the movie these days. So much time has passed since its release and the fact that people are still analysing it is a testament to Fincher, Rawlings etc. They got so much out of a dire situation.

Ripley, Dog Alien, and one of the Weyland Yutani 'animal control' guys with the col suit. I think David Fincher would be very touched to hear how it was such an important film at that stage in your life.

Agree with pretty much everything you said. There is a lot for people to hate about this film, especially if they came off the high of loving Aliens and its tone. On the other hand, there is a great deal of depth in this film that isn't fully realized, which means you have to dig for it.
It really does stick with me, the feeling of an exhausted soldier years into a war choosing to continue to fight despite knowing they will likely die in the effort because it is better to meet your end on your feet on your terms than on your knees. There is always hope even in the most desolate moments. I appreciate this, and I appreciate those that fought so hard to make it good in the face of the obstacles preventing it.

You can't change yesterday. You think you can change today, but today is just tomorrow's yesterday. You can't change today, tomorrow or even right now. Alien 3 was _always_ going to be Alien 3, no matter how much people fought and bickered. The final product already existed in a future yet conceived. The only thing in life that you can change is how you feel and think, everything else will happen the way it happens regardless. There is a beauty in ugliness and Alien 3 is an ugly mess and a masterpiece. Whether people love it or hate it, it just is.

Have watched all these Alien3 vids - great stuff. Lots of details I never realised. I initially came out the cinema originally so depressed but over the years the look & feel really won me over, but it was the assembly cut that really did it for me - was so much better and gave all the characters more screen time - cutting the Golic subplot out the original & having him disappear midway through the movie was criminal (pun intended). Also loved your personal story at the end - really touching.

Excellent deep dive, I really enjoyed it. I agree the score is excellent and Fincher did more than most to give the terrible script a chance of success. I watched it first at the cinema in 1992 and was gutted with the in-credits death of both Newt and Hicks and almost walked out. I stuck with it and at the end, coming from the UK and knowing how good the British actors were, was dumbfounded at how little they were given to work with, it definitely was the Sigourney Weaver show as you highlighted in Part 1... I have never watched the Theatrical Cut again. I watched the Assembly Cut a couple of times and this was better for sure, but not enough to make me watch it again after that alas. Fincher is a superb director and he clearly gave this film a chance and a pulse - I don't love it or hate it, it's just so so really, which is sad for me to say as an Alien fan.

If the story immediately follows after Aliens
    (a) Newt must be re-cast due to the aging of Carrie Henn
    (b) Hicks would have to become the co-lead of the story thus meaning that it is not a Ripley-focused story but a Newt-protecting story
If the story puts in a time jump after Aliens
    (a) still possible re-cast of Newt
    (b) due to her experiences and responsibility of raising Newt, Ripley psychologically would never allow for any pursuit of xenomorphs due to danger to herself and/or Newt and/or leaving Newt
    (c) having xenomorphs threaten Ripley and Newt at a later time would be a cheap contrived plot device that would come across as just being convenient for the plot to happen. Wow, how unlucky that these xenomorphs show up AGAIN to bother Ripley and Newt.???!!!
    The only options are
    (a) a Ripley movie with her as pivot central character, no Newt, no Hicks
    (b) a Newt re-cast with Ripley and Hicks but with divided character focus
    (c) a Hicks central character movie with only Ripley and Newt cameos
    We got the first option.

It was possible to have Ripley as the only main character without killing Newt, Hicks, and Bishop.
There was no need to re-cast Newt. She can be moved off-screen without killing her.
What's wrong with Hicks being the co-lead? That's what he was in ALIENS.
Having Hicks be the sole lead character would have been fine with me. Ripley deserved a rest. Her character arc was finished.

I love all six movies equally, partly because how unique they are and reflect the filmmakers behind them, and I will always defend them, because this franchise is more than just Aliens like many would want, and it's more than horror, sci-fi, or action, they explore other themes, and visually and musically they're all so unique. And I'm glad seeing Alien3 re-evaluated over time, because ever since I was a little kid and saw it, I loved the oppressive, depressive tone, and it always made perfect contrast with the adrenaline feast that it's Aliens. To make things short, I truly love all of them.
PS. Maybe I love Alien Covenant a little less :D

I love your outlook on Alien3. I find myself able to rewatch this more than any other Alien (or predator), excepting maybe the original Alien. the necessity of the prisoners to face the alien... the dark tones; fatalistic characters facing a true existential crisis... it would have been nice to have hicks and newt around, would have been lovely to see Clemons last a bit longer, but overall it was a horror movie of depth and nuance.

I've made my peace with Alien 3 over the years. The assembly cut helped me get to that point. I like to think that the story is one last nightmare Ripley is having in the Sulaco on the trip home. Right after the final scene, we cut to Ripley being awakened by Newt and Hicks while in orbit around Earth. In this way, her final psychological demons are overcome at last. And I have one last thing to add. I thought Alien 3 suffered unanimous hate; it wasn't until many years later that I discovered that some people actually like Alien 3. I made a friend in recent years who likes Alien 3 as much as Alien and Aliens. He was the first person I met in real life who likes Alien 3. It was like finding a unicorn in the real world. I remember thinking: You actually like Alien 3? How can anyone like Alien 3? And yet it's true.

@@Wyrmwould I don't think it's ridiculous at all because the folks that hate this film have valid, quantifiable views for disliking it. One of the channel members commented that Alien 3 was the Last Jedi of the Alien franchise, and I quoted that person as well. The Last Jedi deserves the hate just as much as Alien 3 and there are specific issues with both of the films. This is the first time I've come across your channel and am really impressed by the presentation, I did watch part 1 first. I already watch a lot of analysis channels but have also subscribed to yours. I'm a big sci-fi fan in general but when younger, my older brother would record movies off TV on VHS, movies like the Alien series, Dune, Psycho, Escape from New York and many more.
I would have seen them in this order, Aliens, Alien then Alien 3. Even though I get why people love the first 2, which I do too, this is my favourite. You've outlined many of the reasons I love, most notably the character performances. I saw so many personalities in the residents. What I love about this movie is how different it is from the others and that it is such a hostile environment for Ripley. Though the crimes of the residents of Fury 161 are not unexpected, it was great to match the crimes to more of them.
My interpretation of the Alien / pipe scene is that it was her perception of the situation, she saw what she wanted to see.
There is a shift in how the Aliens are portrayed in terms of their intelligence, independence and instinct. I still enjoy them in the first 3 movies, one of the few good things to come out of AVP was Grid. An Alien who was injured by a Predator net and developed a personality.

Oh, what I forgot to give my opinion on the Hicks / Newt situation. Whether it is the same one you mentioned, I listened to an audiobook of a totally different Alien 3. It was interesting and I do think that they could have been valuable allies to Ripley. I heard that they wanted to have Hicks take over as series lead. That would have been a mistake for the series, Ripley needed to remain front and centre. 80's and 90's movies had so much character. Because movies, on the whole, have been dire since the end of Marvel Phase 3, many content creators have been going on a massive nostalgia binge and it has been amazing. Like Although not my favourite of the original 6 Star Trek movies, I have always had a soft spot for 5. Predator 2 also get a lot of unfair hate that I have never understood. As I said in my first comment, a terrific breakdown that, with both parts, is almost as long as the movie itself. Really impressed by the presentation and so enjoyable. @@RepresentThis

@@jamesabernethy7896 5 can be amazing as there is a theory out there that it's a dream in Kirk's head and it makes it really interesting because when the three sit around the campfire they go to bed and at the end they are in the same clothes and in the same spots as if it was all a dream. Then you can watch it and take it as it is which gives you a film with 2 different views depending on how you watch it. All the Classic Trek films are wonderful.

I've never seen that theory. An element that gets a lot of hate is Kirk's death in generations. I've always liked it as dying in battle felt too cliché. He said in 5 that he'd always known that he'd die alone. And although Picard was with him. Picard was a stranger from the wrong Enterprise. He was in a strange place, in a strange time, away from everything that he knew.@@RepresentThis

Concerning the egg shown in the early seconds of the film, I agree that its implementation was beyond stupid. Although I have no problem with the facehugger been inside the Sulaco, because in the hive scene on Aliens, we see eggs opening up right before Ripley decides to torch them, so to me it would have made more sense that some huggers bursted out of the eggs, saw the queen storming off the place, got into her back and reached the Sulaco with her. No need for an egg summoned thru a cheat console command.
As for the film's ending, I prefer the theatrical cut, I love the music, the shot and those damn screams from the queen as Ripley huggs her tight during her fall, besides she was screwed from the beginning, The Company(tm) wouldn't allow her to live even if she gave away the alien with extreme joy in her eyes.

I am glad you mentioned Holt. Excellent actor now! Was great in Mindhunter and (from what I remember) Fight Club. I don't like the r**e scene. I understand that it is a brutal planet with convicts and Ripley is the first woman that has been around in forever, or ever, but it was psychologically messed up. The AC and theatrical cut do not dwell on it but they dwell on how badass and fierce Dillon is. That guy (played amazingly by Charles S. Dutton) is someone that could have your back forever if you don't betray him, but if you do betray him, whoa, look out. Tough SOB! Clemens (played by the equally amazing Charles Dance) was a really good character, but unlike Dillon, he doesn't make it to the end of the movie. Clemens death only serves to isolate Ripley further, and we already get too much of that from the opening scene onward. This movie has some great acting, but never manages to bring all the pieces together; not even in the Assembly Cut, which I do like. There are so many more things to say about it, but you have that covered well.

I really do enjoy this film and like many, I am annoyed with the cheap deaths of Newt and Hicks after going through all they did in Aliens. I think a more satisfying approach would be to recast Newt to keep it an immediate follow up and have an early Hicks death by the Alien to keep it Ripley and Newt focused. Could swap Hicks for the Charles Dance death scene for the same shocking death with greater emotional stakes. Audiences would probably still be upset but not nearly as bad as they were with the cheap deaths. Ripley could still die at the end with Newt and Morse being the only survivors. This wouldn't change much at all to the film but I think would improve it substantially and be immensely more satisfying. Even still, I enjoy rewatching this unfairly maligned sequel (in my opinion) every couple of years. I think the tone is amazing but could also factor into the hate it gets. Great job on the videos
