This changed the way I paint forever...

- Today I'll show you how to paint a Dark Angels Bladeguard in a Grimdark Deathwing bone armor scheme. Today this is considered a very traditional approach but back in the day when I stumbled over it, it really revolutionised my painting and how I think about application of paint, and storytelling with miniatures.

This channel is about painting miniatures for your warhammer, infinity, warmachine & d&d games, as well as age of sigmar and warhammer 40k. space marines, space wolves, sisters of battle, stormcast eternals, beastclaw raiders, mawtribes, cities of sigmar, chaos space marines. Also painting different scale models and miniature busts! How to paint NMM. How to paint warhammer, how to paint D&D figures. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh, my God. It even has Decal Transfers.
Love this take on Deathwing armour, and the statement about Grimdark being an aesthetic rather than a technique. Experimentation and utilising/discovering new techniques is part of the joy of the hobby for me.
Good points. A lot of things like NMM and dramatic lighting are also not techniques, but a result or effect. How we get there is a matter of experimentation followed by experience. :)
This ended up being one of the best marine painting videos I've ever watched. The range of techniques, the way you mix paint, it's next level.
came to say the same thing
Damn, I don't want you to cut down the fluff of the video. The step by step, full process is what I love about this! It's how I really learn!
Maybe have the "main video" short and sweet, and then post the longer ones in a separate channel? Call it Trovarion Deep Cuts or Trovarion Happy Hour, but please, post the longer form!
Completely agree!
Big ditto! There's so few long-form painting videos that really help me grow my technique. Having a shortcut with a verbalized description just isn't the same!
when I say fluff I mean me being on camera or fancy filler shots, etc.
I think allowing the die hards to trade deep knowledge for some money over on patreon is perfect. It's a win for the fan, and for the creator
Does painting tyranids in a grim dark style make any sense?
5:49 I agree. Reads like snow interestingly enough.
Came here from North Of The Boarder. Instant subscribe. Love watching people who are so insanely good at their art.
me too
Sorry to hear that TH-cam isn’t pushing your videos. There’s so much really interesting information and advice in your videos and I sincerely hope that you can continue to make them. All the best!
Thanks! it is pushing most, but the painting videos usually underperform. I don't mean to sound like I blame youtube though, I think I know what the problem is and I just have to change things around a bit :) manly make the videos more precise/shorter for more engagement.
Probably one of the best painting videos I have seen on this platform.
Love the battle damaged decals! When you first showed off the models, my initial reaction was "OMG, how did he achieve that look?!" You made it so simple, yet so effective
What I love about this video (and a lot of your tutorials) is the end result looks absolutely amazing, and also the process looks very achievable and easy to follow. The ‘techniques’ are not overly complicated but I definitely wouldn’t have thought about it by myself
Thanks as always!
Love the simple act of removing various trim pieces and sculpting a hood. Little things can make a big difference; our conversions don't always have to be super ambitious.
The shield looks amazing, you did so much with simple decals, it looks like the personal sigil of a medieval knight.
Love the shoulder pads. I’m not sure what it is but there’s something about that look that just hits. You’ve got me thinking about giving it a go. I will say I nearly had a heart attack when you took the knife to the shield, lol.
This is the best Dark Angel mini I’ve ever seen.
Perfect look for a fallen/redeemed brother. I absolutely love this cloth look, need to try and replicate it with my blood angels vets.
The final mini looks fantastic! I'll be sure to try and use some of the weathering techniques you used with my own miniatures :) Great work!
The shield made me ridiculously happy. I sat here smiling at the process. Amazing
This is the first time I've seen sponge "paint chipping" turn out so good. Great work, liked and subbed.
Love the look of your weathered armor with all the decals
Your greens in this - both the robes and and metallics - are sublime.
stunning job. absolutely LOVE the tone on the armour
That's incredible mate.
Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial.
Watching you paint is such treat! So many techniques and so inspiring!
First time I encounter your channel, I see an extremely teaching video on painting deathwing armour, green cloth, decal chipping, basing, sculpting a hood, scratching shoulder pads and shield,...all. Very very good content.
Couldn't understand the title yet, though.
You got good content, the title made you click it. Both parties happy.
Very nice, deep coloured bone and the weathering. Great paintjob for the best Space Marines, no repenting needed here!
The absolute mastery you show while painting this mini is insane. I didnt want the video to end lol.
Cool stuff. This grimdark stuff makes me imagine a chapter that's been somehow stranded on a really rough world for generations or a chapter down on it's luck but too prideful to give up and merge with some others.
Amazing, love it! Really inspiring, the shield looks so good 🛡️🙌👌❤ (also the chipping effect just looks real, truly fantastic).
Looks amazing! really enjoying the different take on take on grimdark
I'm trying to restart painting after 10 years. I'm not really into speed painting and have the mini just ready to play. It's nice that you show all those technics and explain what it adds and the result is just amazing.
As always to very impressive and helpful. Thanks, Trov!
Awesome! Looks simple but fantastic outcome
I often click on to videos but this is the one of the first videos I watched (along with your slapchop and your HH Ultramarine recently, both a similar style to this) the whole way through. For me if you keep adding in tutorials like this, along with the more in-depth/longer videos) I would watch more and that would act as a gateway to being more invested to watch to the longer more in depth vids.
Love the result here 😍 i even like the base textures!
Looks good! I find painting or observing someone who paints very well very relaxing for the mind.
Incredible job, very well done. Love the weathering and combat damage
Phenomenal job dude. Fabulous techniques and a superb Bladeguard.
I like how you use so many different techniques and styles on each mini. Definitely learn the most from your vids.
Your work is inspiring! Great job, always love watching your videos to try and pick up new tips, tricks and ideas.
You are a true perfectionist.
I was impressed how the red borders on the shield heraldry were freehand painted to such exacting alignment and perfect linearity.
...only next to be nearly completely obliterated by weathering effects.
I appreciate the dedication to the weathering process of a version of what would have been a perfect in the showroom shield to the battleworn result, which felt like watching the process in rapid timelapse.
This was an absolutely superb build and paint job. Very well done!
I love the music you use. Also love how dark and weathered the piece came out. Awesome job as always. 👍🏽
Awesome video, gives me a lot of ideas for my Heresy Dark Angels too. Love the music you use for the videos as well, can't beat some synthwave.
Your grimdark series is amazing. For myself, the best advice has been to not be afraid to experiment. Ty so much for sharing
This format is awesome. Camera work and cuts are spot on. Such positive advice. Thanx!
That weathered armor really sells the whole veteran thing, well done!
Watching you work is incredible. I could watch you paint all day man. Thanks for sharing your talent and passion with us. You inspire me to grind out hours of painting to reach a level like this.
love the purple shading on the green cloth, great idea
Really enjoy your content, just got back into miniature painting and your grimdark styles are very accessible to attempt and enjoyable to complete. It's also great to learn to use different techniques for similar results
I loved this video - I felt like I was able to see a lot of the process you used, and in a way that I could take away ideas for my own models and actually know how to implement them. Please keep more videos like this coming!
Even if a prefer long and detailed videos, this one is amazing. Clear, consistent, lots of points explained. Very well made and interesting.
Awesome video as usual Trov.
I appreciate your work and wish you all the best.
thank you, that's so kind of you!
I really like the way you display the paint/colour on the side when you are talking about it and using it on the model.
Insane, seeing something like this is just a pure form of art. Im absolutely speachless
Also, the montage/ editing really does well in your videos. Love to see more. It's just sad that our attention capacity is that low, but yeah, it kinda works with your montages
That green metallic is beyond amazing. God damn!
That is absolutely incredible.
Awesome work as always!
thats friggin gorgeous work!
fantastic work as always keep up the great work !!!
This video was really enjoyable to watch! Loved it!
Huge props! Just found this as a suggestion in my feed. You were a very easy subscribe choice. Keep up the great work!
Beautiful work. The textured heavy cloth technique alone is worth watching. I really like the older veteran head you used too. That combined with the weathered armour and wargear is a much better fit for The Lion's Guard. Cheers!
I really like how that turned out. And i always watch the whole thing. Love your work man.
Awesome work, as always. Very inspiring!
That decal work is mind bending, can;t wait to try it myself.
best painting tutorials on YT. always love to see a new vid from Trov!
Not sure how I have missed your channel but I am glad I found it. You are very talented and am learning a lot from your videos! Thank you!
Beautiful job!
Amazing video brother, very captivating watching it!
Great work with a lot of details!
Great work man. Magnificent.
I'm here from the channel North of the Border. This is such a sick sculpture and I'm glad I stuck till the end. Definitely subscribing
Beautiful work !
Brilliance ! Great scheme
👏🏼 Amazing final result, you never disappoint!
This one turned out amazing, gonna pick up my brush again this week to paint some more Black Templars in this grimdark style - That one is still my favorite
Keep up the good work, your videos, style and persona is really awesome.
Those decals/chipping look so great. I'll be trying this.
Just want to say That since I have started to watch your videos, I have started to change the way I paint. Which is great, I am still learning a lot. Keep up the amazing work, and Thanks for inspiring me.
Solid video. Really appreciate you explaining your techniques. Bone colored armor has always been a pain for me but I think I wanna give it another shot after watching this.
Great video, I really enjoyed seeing your vision for the Honour Guard. Cheers mate!
This was recommended to me, and I subscribed. This is probably the best space marine painting video I’ve ever watched, and the easiest to follow in terms of how you do things and how you explain it. Excellent video
Brilliant video, showing what can be achieved with a few simple techniques. I have been searching for this colour scheme for my new Death Guard army, and you have come up with the goods. Keep it up.
I'll be rewatching this many times, thanks a lot!
Please keep these coming! Great video
So good!! love the montage of the shield aswell. Great music too
Absolutely amazing
Killer looking mini, thank you for you help and insight 🙏🏻🖤
Awesome as always!
Love this video, it's really engaging and I like this new style too. I always watch your videos all the way through, sometimes twice, but I understand having to play the game to the system. Fully agree that your usual grim dark style doesn't work well here too, but this was an epic adaption and I hope to see more grim dark space marines and other 40k factions from you soon! Thanks again for all your videos and effort.
Okay , I’m blown away . One of , if not the best paint jobs I’ve seen on a space marine . Especially pulling off that creamy white of the death wing and weathering it to perfection .
Also so many damn techniques being used ! So many things I want to try out now ! You sir , are a master of your craft and also a terrific teacher . Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with the world !
Great Video, amazing results!
Great video and format! Thanks
Love the heavy weathering. This is an effect I have been trying to get down. Your video will be helping me do so. Thanks!
That looks amazing. I will steal some of these techniques for my models. Thanks for sharing!
You really really sold me on how to use decals better, unbelievable. Thank you so much!
Excellent work
Awesome as always 👏
Great tutorial as always!
nice video and great painting tips , enjoyed the whole process
😱😱😱 The weather on that miniature is another level very well done I was supposed to be painting but nar I wanted to watch this
