    Incredible work. I am just beginning in 40 and chose the Dark Angels as my army. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain and demonstrate everything. I found it incredibly helpful. I have not painted my first model yet but this video has set my mind at ease and motivated me to get going on building my army. Thanks again.

      Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment.
      Really glad it has put your mind at ease. Painting your first mini can be really daunting, but I promise you it’s actually great fun and there’s no better feeling than finishing painting a mini.
      All I would say, is don’t put yourself under pressure or be hard on yourself if you make mistakes. Just go with it and remember, mistakes are part of learning and there’s nothing which can’t be put right.
      Have fun 👍🏻

      I did a few tests with various greens before I started this tutorial and the green I felt matched the artwork from the books and codex etc best was the Scale 75 paint.

    This paint scheme is how I imagine the Dark Angels I plan on building to be like! The only criticism I have with the video is no guide on painting the shield, due to it being a complex piece, but I fell in love with this scheme. The green is perfect for me since it's not dark enough to be almost black but not bright enough to be confused for a Salamander. Like walking through a tightly packed forest with enough light to see in. Love it and great video!

    Recently decided to retake the plunge back into this hobby, watching various tutorials and one thing that still hasn't faded is my hatred and lack of desire to paint faces 😂 if there's a helmet option I always do it lol but great step by step guide. Love the walk through of your various methods!

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I totally get why people put off painting faces, but they do get easier the more you do them. and you certainly wont get any better if you never do any :D
      how about for each squad you paint you do helmets for all of them but also do a face too? You dont need to use it but it'll be a bit of practice without the pressure of having to get it right. Heck, if it goes really wrong you can just strip it and try again.
      I think the biggest problem is the pressure we put on ourselves to have get things perfect. It spoils the fun of just painting.
      If you remove that worry of messing up, you might just surprise yourself.
      So, what do you have to lose?

    This was definitely a good video! Even though some of it I was kinda confused why you did it that way!?! I’m pretty sure this is the 1st video of yours I’ve ever seen so I didn’t want to leave too many comments (aka a comment with the time stamp for each comment/question I have)….. now 1 of the things you did that a lot of other TH-cam painters also do is when you do your base coat on any scrolls and bones you start with a tan?!? Yes, it’s a “darker” tan…… but it’s still a “tan” and therefore it will still end very bright! And that ends up making it look out of place if the rest of the guys has battle damage!?! Personally I like to start with a brown! Depending on how worn, damaged or dirty I want it to look will determine if I go for a dark or light brown!?! But I still start with a brown. And if you want, you could put it on and while it’s still a bit wet put the darkest tan you have over it! It will make it a lot of a dark tan and that means after that drys you can still use the same tan again and it will be a brighter color (now, it might just be me…. But I’ve tried mixing it on my wet palette to do the same thing, but it never looks as good as if I did it the way I just explained)!!! And when it comes to the backside of those scrolls you can leave the darkest part of it brown it it looks great (to me! But you also can’t really see it “normally”)!!! And the bone looks real good from it as well! (Now, to try to NOT make this 3x longer than it already is or more, I won’t add in the steps I would have done for the rest that I was confused why you did it that way! Unless you actually want to know, then ask?!?) Now when it came to anything that ended up brown, I’m not sure why you didn’t just use a brown wash or that “Snake skin _____” whatever it’s called?!? And I’m not sure why you did the red handle that way also?!? Like if you have a limited amount of stuff to work with and zero washes then I get it….. but I don’t think you count in that category!?! But I found it easier (and it usually looks way better) when I paint the handle white (or if you want to take it to the next step, grey. Then little white dots in the middle of each diamond) then a nuln shade. Brighten up the white (or the grey and white) spots if you made it too dark. And then a red wash over the whole thing! I know…. I said I wouldn’t explain how I would do it unless asked….. but the last one written out without it didn’t really make any sense….. so I felt like I needed to!?! But since I did, I’m not going to add the rest! But NONE of them mean nor am I saying that you are not a good painter! Not at all!!! I was just curious why you did them that way!?! And if anyone is wondering, yes! I am a professional painter! Not the same kind of a painter! But I have been working as a painter for almost 24 years (the 22nd of this month will be 24 years) and I’ve been doing this kind of painting for over 5 years now also!!! I can’t wait to see more of your videos!!!

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey man
      Thanks for taking the time to comment.
      So, I get where you’re coming from and I suppose the answer is it’s just how I like to work and develop the mini and adapt things as I go. I generally like to block in some mid tone colours and see how they look together and then I can decide how I want to progress. Darken, lighten, tint, glaze etc.
      As to why I don’t start from darker tone and work up? Well, I think that’s just how my mind works. I fine it easier to darken shadows from a mid point and then highlight. I know it is inefficient but I just seem to find placement of shadows and highlights easier that way.
      Unlike yourself, I’m not a professional painter in anyway. This is simply my hobby and the videos are in response to people asking how I paint my minis.🙂
      So I do the best I can to explain my steps
      I hope that goes a little way to making things clearer.
      Ultimately though, I feel painting is all about finding what works for you and your way of achieving the results you want. It’s an expression and extension of yourself after all. So, if my way isn’t for you. Then cool. 👍

    • @tp6498
      @tp6498 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I'm thinking the problem is all me. I just can't grasp what the proper consistency should be. I've seen people on youtube paint base coats strictly with air brush paints because they're already thinned down and can go directly from the pot on the minny in just a few coats. Then they go in and highlight/edge highlight with regular acrylics. No wet pallets or thinning involved.

    Hi, thank you for a fantastic and very informative video. As someone that is returning to the hobby after an absence of well over a decade - and a new Dark Angels fan - would it be possible to provide a selection of paints that are absolutely essential for a similar scheme please? Obviously, the more I paint, the better i will get, but at the moment such a comprehensive selection will not suit my rather modest abilities.

    I don't normally bother posting comments like this, but this video was really impressive. I'm a Dark Angels player so perhaps I'm biased, but here's what you do well in my opinion.
    The intro is cool (and mercifully short).
    The music throughout is really chill, I've got a lot of time for that.
    The unique camera angles make the video more interesting and are subtly really helpful, specifically the close-ups especially when you're painting details.
    Naming all the colours, and the manufacturers.
    The list of paints (AND WHERE TO BUY THEM) is amazing, who else does that? I admire that it's your own bundle on EG's website too, well played!
    The description is really well written, and the video is sectioned off so when I come back I can find the part I need, great stuff.
    All in all, really professional shit man, well done - The model looks great too!
    If I had my way I would make you do a Deathwing and Ravenwing video as well, I appreciate that's a big ask, but hey! Don't ask don't get!

    This is great job. Now, I wonder how you would paint Plague Marines? Just such a loose thought of mine;p. Also, as a side note - Caliban Green is only a 1/3 of a Chapter. While Ravenwing is black, like Black Templars or Raven Guard, painting almost white bone white of Deathwing is probably more, hmm, I shall say Unforgiving. That would be nice, too!

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooo! now plague marines are very cool and would make for a good video, with all their mutations and goo ;)
      I'll add it to the list for sure.
      In terms of the other two armour colours for Dark Angels, I would probably do the Ravenwing using the black armour recipe I used for my Votann. The matte finish would be badass for them
      th-cam.com/video/XXYFAdWli80/w-d-xo.html
      and for the Deathwing armour, I would use the same recipe I used for the robes in this video and then do the robes the same as the armour from this video. Basically just switching them around.
      Hope that helps :)

    Great guide !! Just done this like for like, however when I do the second round of Black Forest green after the nuln oil, the paint doesn’t seem to blend it goes straight back to its Matt finish? Am I something wrong? Much appreciated👍🏻

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So it sounds like the nuln oil is drying a bit glossy. This can happen with washes (no matter how hard you shake them)
      When this happens you can either apply a thin coat of matte varnish over the area or what I tend to do is just brush on a thin layer of Lahmian Medium and that is enough to dull the shine and make things blend together easier.
      You can even do this after you’ve added the second coat of the black Forrest green if you hadn’t noticed the nuln oil being slightly glossy.
      The difference is more pronounced when using S75 paints because they are so matte.
      I hope that helps? 👍

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you
      Main tips really are to twist your brush into a point as you load your paint and then when you are edging just touch the bristles to the model very lightly.
      If they bend at all you’re pressing too hard. You just want to try and glide over the surface barely touching at all.
      That way you get a fine line and it doesn’t disturb your tip

    how do you make your brushes pen like? they are so precise no bend yet apply great amounts of paint.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perhaps this would be a good topic for a video?
      The answer though, is a few different things.
      Firstly, you need your brush to be in good condition. That doesn’t mean it has to be expensive but you just need to treat it well and clean it regularly so it continues to hold a point.
      Next the bristles need to be damp before you load your paint.
      If they’re too dry, the paint will lose some moisture to the bristles and won’t flow smoothly. Too wet and the paint will simply drip from the brush. I tend to rinse my brush and then paint the excess water on to my thumb, which leave the bristles ready for paint.
      Finally, when you load your brush with paint you want to give it a little twist as you draw the brush back along the palette. By twisting as you draw the brush back you will cause the bristles to form back into a point ready to paint.
      I hope that helps a bit?

I havent seen any videos that really show or display the how to actually paint part of the whole experience. I believe Deathwing have bone coloured armour, so this paint scheme is technically Greenwing armour. I’m planning to do a guide for Deathwing armour too

    Really loved the finished product but that mace glow made the weapon look far worse imo.
    Video was reasonably easy to follow but was quite a few steps so i would probably only got to this level of effort for characters personally. Would have been nice to achieve a simpler decent standard across the whole model first, then add on additional steps for pushing the scheme further.
