You know why your videos are excellent? Because unlike many influencers who rely on gimmicks, click bait and shock value. You sirs, actually paint a miniature in a succinct and skilled way. A way that folks can easily follow along with. Bravo to you for staying true to form, love the videos!
GAMES WORKSHOP don't want you to know this trick for painting DEATHWING TERMINATORS!!! - Ninjon probably 😅
Thanks, we appreciate that.
@@luke7834 Yeah, I do like Ninjon, and that comment isn't directed at any creator. Just the general direction I see videos going these days. Such as new amazing technique, look here! What happened to? I want to paint a miniature with the technique I know, or something that isn't fancy. I want to paint because I like painting. No tech is going to make you amazing. The only thing that will make you amazing is time spent on the brushes.
@@adwag3573Sadly I think this is a product of how TH-cam works in terms of creators getting impressions, views, etc. Can’t remember the creator who was discussing it in a recent video but they took a year off from producing 40kTuber content and cited one of the reasons being that he didn’t want to fall into the rat race larger channels are stuck in where they are constantly making “Slapchop but better”, paint review, and similar videos versus just painting fun minis.
@@RileyGein there's always a choice.
That bone white armour scheme is so good, love to see belial done in that scheme aswell. Also would love to see a dark angel scheme based of the 3rd codex art, that is peek dark angels.
When the Lion came out GW featured a stark white paint scheme for him, and the idea of white tone dark angels has forever been in my mind since.
I believe the 'chest thing' is an Aquila if it is a two headed eagle (sometimes on power armour/tacticals) but is an Imperialis if it is a winged skull.
Correct!
Cult of Paint absolutely crushing it as usual!
I'd forgotten how yellow the DW scheme has gotten and that white is a such a great look. I'd prefer to see more in that old skool, especially some of the new characters.
Trying to replicate your bone armour and my flat flesh is no where near as light as yours! Outstanding as always, wish I could get the smoothness you guys do with your airbrush.
Hearing those 5 words at the beginning of a video instantly makes my heart rate calm down and my worries melt away even if just for 15-20mins. Thanks for making my favorite informative and relaxing videos!
It's really nice seeing the old cold white Deathwing painted. Been a Deathwing fan since the Space Hulk expansion. I have a few RT Termies knocking about, I might try that scheme on.
I love that cool white classic look of the Death Wing. WOW.
i love old skoll!!! may be even little bit colder tone.
I love this one. To me Deathwing was always pure white as that's how they were in the boardgame expansion and the DOS game I played as a kid
Good work guys. I love the look of the white death wing. probably because it ticks that nostalgia box from the fantastic old artwork.
Both are astounding. The shot of all 4 at the end looked so epic.
This just made my night, Deathwing are my next army now that I am done my templars! You guys are making it impossible to choose which scheme, but I dont think I can say no to that white scheme, its just hitting different. Another amazing video, thank you! Cannot wait to see the squad painted to sell me even more on it!
I really like both of them, the space hulk squad sounds like it’ll be a really cool little project too!
As you asked the white scheme. I noted of all the paints I have I didn't have Death Korp Drab - but I did have lots of Vallejo Surface Primers (which would cut out another step). So I quickly got one from my local GW (20 minute walk away).
I found mixing 50/50 74.603 German Panzer Grey and 74.608 USA Olive Drab is pretty much identical to GW Death Korp Drab. As I have two of each primer that means I will have plenty, especially when it comes to painting Land Raiders, Repulsors, Dreadnoughts etc.
Once again thanks for this, great stuff.
Good to know, thanks for sharing.
@@cultofpaint I am assuming you considered dot filtering for larger models like dreadnoughts and tanks - if doing the white scheme did you find any oil hues/makes/brands that you considered using to do that?
This is so I don't have to think about it.
Wayne England's illustration of Blood Angels battling Orks on Armageddon (WD110) depicting marines in green camo, and his cover art of a Deathwing captain a few months later have been a big influence on how I choose colours for retro schemes. For a while his subtly mottled pencil shading seemed to be on every amroured surface he rendered but it **rarely** translated to any of the miniature painting of the time. Great work as always - cheers!
He really was one of the greats.
@@cultofpaint Looking forward to seeing the Space Hulk team next week.
Having played the original SpaceHulk Deathwing, this video brought back so much join and good memories!
Really love that ivory one, more pure white than I’ve become accustomed to seeing them - looks great!
I got into hobby during the same era so I always loved the original Deathwing color scheme from the Space Hulk expansions and original PC video game. Thank you for doing this tutorial because most tutorials in the years since have focused on the later beige/red/green scheme.
Absolutely love the old school white scheme, I think I might steal that for my apothecary units
They all look great! Thanks for sharing these recipes. I prefer the new skool because it just looks cleaner
both schemes look amazing!
Love the classic white colour scheme.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm finally getting around to painting my Deathwing Knights, and while I love the bone white color scheme, I was just having so much trouble airbrushing the Vallejo Ivory paint. I ended up working with a sort of half-way scheme using Golden High Flow Titan Buff as my highest highlight and edge highlighting with the Ivory. It doesn't quite give the cold-white effect, but I'm quite happy with how my test model is coming along.
I always did my Deathwing based on the original artwork which is more real bonewhite built up from dark dusty grey, not bleached bone style. So many people ripped on me back in 3rd Ed for that as it went against the contemporary artwork and GW painted models which was all Bleached bone. Which they all admitted overtime at the local GW that it looked better. As they worked out I tried to replicate real sun bleached bone skeletons of animals we see in the outback.
So glad someone on TH-cam is bringing back the OG white! subbed
Love the bone white armor! 1993 Space Hulk pc game cover! One of the toughest games I've ever played!
If I can ask, where did you get the checker pattern transfers from, and what size are the squares?
I really like both schemes, but that white Deathwing colour is fantastic. Bringing the old Space Hulk art to life.
Cheers.
The chequer pattern ones are from Micro Scale Industries.
What scale are the checkers? 1/8 inch or 1/16inch?
Another cracking one...honestly can't which I like more. Terminators always look awesome haha...I think if I had to it'd be the white ❤
Great colour scheme for the browner one!
Love the bone colour, but the white is my new favourite Deathwing 🤘🏻
I love the colder white that you got here. Looks reaaally good!
I’d usually prefer a warmer bone-white, the one you’ve got seems to be a bit browner than I’d like. Both terminators look excellent though!
I've been playing since 2nd edition and I really have wanted to do a deathwing army for a long time. My first army was sisters. But out of the 2 that you painted I like the white scheme
I have actually found that while you can't use Tamiya X-20A to thin vallejo and most other water based acrylics, you can actually mix GW and Tamiya paints and use X-20A to thin them for the airbrush, its the main reason I use GW acrylics over other ranges. It turned great regardless, always love the deathwing scheme!
I am so used to see them in bone-ish colors, really digging the white one.
If you do squad early Deathwing……you’re going to have to do a ‘Blip’ of early purestrain Geanstealers? ;)
Love these, Henry. Really like the old school pale/cooler white. Really tickled my fancy.
Thanks mate. Me too, dangerously!
@@cultofpaint I really don't need things like this in my eyeline. Low model, high point, elite forces are far too easy a distraction.
I remember the early days of Rogue Trader, where the Deathwing colour scheme was explained, and where the Dark Angels were of Native American descent, hence the feathers and other iconography they had, including personal heraldry for officers.
I still love the Dark Angels, don't get me wrong, but the re-writing of their history, along with most of what was original WH40k lore has put me off WH40k now.
The Deathwing were almost wiped out during one battle (They originally wore dark green armour, like their battle brothers from the majority of their chapter), so adopted the bone/white colour scheme as an honour for their fallen brethren.
They wore feathers on their weapons to continue the native Shamanic practice of wearing totems in their Native American tribes, but it looks like they have removed them from the minis today.
Some people may accuse me of lying, but I've been in this hobby since 1972, saw how White Dwarf evolved from a D&D magazine into what it is today, and remember when GW was just Citadel Games, and when they began the Rogue Trader game, which evolved into WH40k, they took the gaming world by storm, even having female Space Marine/Ork minis in their ranges.
Love the comparison of the Deathwing colour schemes in this video, which brings back so many memories of trying to paint them myself, after seeing Mike McVey's Deathwing vs Genestealers diorama in White Dwarf way back when :-)
Really like both schemes
I like the cool scheme better. Great video by the way
Opens video.
"Hi everyone. Is Henry here"
Likes video
"Best video ever"
Both are super cool and quick schemes. Picking my favorite has to be the classic OG white. If you ever wanted to do a master class type longer video, I wouldn't be angry.
Excellent video. I’m painting up some deathwing termies now. I went with a more bone look but I do love that old school white look
Thank you so much, excellent video. I really like both but going to go for the more earthy tones.
Love the old school cold white. The new yellow schemes are so over-done at this point.
Bone White all the way! Gives a far nicer contrast to Dark Angels green!
Henry, these are amazing!
Amazing paint scheme henry! Love the more bone colour one! Looks amazing! Cannot wait to grab mine tomorrow and get cracking! Thanks again! And also thanks for being a great inspiration for my own channel! 👌🏻👌🏻 hope ur well and maybe get to chat one day. Love u guys!
Bone white is awesome!
Hard to know which I prefer, either of these or the deck tan scheme you did back for indomitus. All of them would be great army schemes!
Cries in White Scars
7:30 traditional white armor
That ivory one is amazing! Incredibly striking and almost looks like he’s covered in ash. Quite fitting for the original Deathwing lore.
Please may I ask where the decals for the power fist, red and white checks etc came from? The results on both schemes are amazing and thank you.
microscale industries
Interesting that I didn't like the look of GW's bone-scheme, but do like yours Henry! Like you I really like the look of the airbrushed armor and the volumetric highlights it gives.
They are so lovely! Brings me back to the terminators from my first set, the Dark Vengeance. Although they don't really look like the traditional Deathwing - they are very sand-orange, nor are they top paintjob, but I love them so much. Too bad I have no idea what paints I used back then haha. Meaby one day I will solve this mystery
loved those dark vengeance termies.
1:40 Epic Epic Illustration...
Awesome! My first space marine army when I was a kid was Dark Angels. Still get nightmares about painting bone coloured armour without thinning the paints down 😅
Slightly selfish request here being a big kill team player but it'd be cool to see some more Kill Team minis if you ever get the chance.
I'd like to do more kill team
Always preferred the bone. Always found white problematic to do nicely . mainly due to the paints I could find at the time.
The ivory scheme just has way more impact.
Both are amazing and look great but i prefer the cream colour as it plays more into the catholic priest robe aesthetic that DA is going for
Excellent work
Absolutely boss 👍👍👍
Amazing work! Man I love the Deathwing. How did you do the checkered patterns on the power fists? Is that freehand work? And if so, are you a robot?
decals.
Where did the decals come from please...desperate to know where you got the power fist check patterns@cultofpaint
Great stuff!
i went with the cool white for mine
“Your grownups, you know all about that”……
Slowly opens window while applying oil wash😅
Not a fan of the white one, it just reads as an apothecary. I think the old one looks white but actually is slightly bone because the room hes in is blue and the blue reflections are making the bone colour read as a cold white. also taking into account that the artwork looks like it has filters over it or is faded somehow.
I always like the bleached bone version of the armour because of the symbolism of honouring the dead.
Love the old school bone white, definitely the way I'm going to paint my Deathwing when they arrive. So much nostalgia from the Deathwing Space Hulk box art.
This is outstanding, a real masterpiece of art, I'm going for the ivory one, meanwhile drowning in hype for the new box I've preordered
Mind if I ask what primer did you use or any similar brand I can buy, thank you very very much for all of your content guys!
I mean, another brand that is not Colour Forge but similar to it, sorry for my bad english knowledge :P
Italian pizza guy on the keyboard here.
Thanks! Colourforge Standard Grey
love this !!!!
id be interested to see a black templars vehicle for your project
That'll be the next BT vid
I don't renember ever seeing GW publish fotos of painted minis in the white scheme.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. The paint jobs look amazing 😍
Do you use varnish before using an oil wash?
Sometimes, if I mainly want the oil to run into the recesses then yes.
I like the newer scheme feels more "bone" the original army colors could swap between Death wing and White Scars, and i wouldn't bat an eye
Great Vid - QQ, the 3rd white terminator, could you tell me the colours that you rused? Thank you!
Yeah I made that mistake. Just because Tamiya thinner can thin regular acrylics and tamiya acrylics doesn't mean you can then mix the two sadly. It'd be great if you could because I love mixing my colours.
Really cool🖌
amazing video as always, fantastic paint job. that gold recipe is so rich! you guys are my favorite 40k/miniature channel by far. how would you go about getting great dramatic shading like this without an airbrush?
Thanks! You can use rattle cans to good effect. The weathering and oil does a lot of the work.
Hi Henry, love the white scheme, i've adopted it for my own DA army, with some minor changes here and there, i was curious though how you did the Purity Seals? Its the only thing thats not shown how to paint on this video, any tips?
They probably changed from the white to the ivory colour because the white Deathwing terminators were too similar to White Scars.
Nice.
Never understood the bleached bone when in the plains world story the amour should have been daub ash white.
pls just pls do solar when it drops for hh, i know you already got a copy from GW and do it as your army project and also in different schemes
Henry, a while ago I tried thinned Ushabti Bone highlights in your style over Zandri Dust, but it wasn’t contrasty enough for me. Thinking of trying your darker brown, warmer base instead. But I don’t have your Tamiyas. From the Citadel Contrast, or even the Army Painter 2.0 range, what would you recommend for a highlight color and how would you thin it?
Great schemes, as always - I got started back in the hobby with your Deathwing Bladeguard Ancient scheme, it still looks fantastic.
I was wondering which decal sheet would be in the Deathwing Assault box. The promo stuff has shown two different sheets. It's such an odd choice to not include Deathwing decals, especially as the size and quantity of Deathwing symbols tends to vary across the previously available sheets (some, with inconsistency, is better than none though). I'm guessing they want you to use the sculpted pads, as if you're starting your army from that box, it pretty much guarantees you'll be getting an upgrade pack for every 5 terminators you add to match. It's a shame though as I prefer the decals for anything but HQ or Elite units. It's also a relatively petty complaint for what I think is a great box overall - it's even got a Dave Gallagher cover-art codex supplement in there.
DG was the king of covers
kinda need 2 more but in reverse, brown base with white highlight and green base with tan highlight haha, to know more :P
Are the check patterns freehands or decals? Because I haven’t seen any decals for that in the deathwing box.
decals.
Weasel-fierce approves!
Still torn between bone white or heresy era colour scheme for my new DA army.
Awesome schemes and might try some out for my deathwing. How did you do the scheme for the third terminator at the end though? Doesn't look as cold as the white one or as warm as the bone one but somewhere in the middle? 22:09
Henry, quick question for you. Is that checker pattern on the power fist painted or a decal. If it is a decal, how do you go about measuring it to fit?
decal. I'll cover them a bit more in next week's vid.
@@cultofpaint Brilliant! I'd appreciate it.
A Boarding Patrol is an army, and you'd be pleasantly surprised how much of a 500 point army a Terminator squad is.....
Yo Henry, great video as always my man. Did you get yourself a new mic? You sound so crisp and clean
Thanks mate, i've just had time to dial in the settings, and for the first time in about 3 months dont have a cold!
Where did you get the checkerboard decals from?
Micro scale Industries
@cultofpaint they have so many decals..please could you tell me which ones/size you used? Sorry I'm just desperate to relocate this!
@@martineasterman5170 sorry Martin I do t have any more details than that. I bought them about 5 years ago and no longer have any packaging. I simply ordered a bunch of different sizes.
@cultofpaint that's ok thank you for your help though much appreciated.
@@cultofpaint Thank you!
this is so good. but could I ask... what's that deathwing standard bearer at the end... he's amazing.
@@mranthony_dop video on him in the indomitus playlist
any advice for attempting the old school bright white style with a brush? is the full base coat of korp drab still advised or should it be used more sparingly?
I really love this method and so will try and replicate for ultramarines. For the black oil wash, do you gloss varnish forst to reduce surface tension?
If necessary, it depends how matte the finish is on your blue.
Thanks, I am using citadel paints thinned with XF-20.
c'est une super vidéo mais pour moi y a un soucis c'est un termnator est de la bonne couleur mais l'autre ressemble + à une façon de peindre un chevalier gris?
Such a shame GW ceased creating metal terminators.
