What Is the Trinity? - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermons

  • Friends, Trinity Sunday has been called “the preacher’s nightmare.” But while the Trinity remains a supreme mystery, Thomas Aquinas used a basic principle that helps us to get at it: beings, at all levels, tend to make images of themselves. The higher you go in the hierarchy of being, the more interior and the more perfect this principle becomes.

This was essentially a master class in Catholic Theology. We just watched, free of advertising, a class that only a graduate student at Oxford or Cambridge might have witnessed. Bishop Barron is our Professor in a lifelong course in spiritual awakening. There are many incredible teachers out there, but how many can you experience daily for Free?! Plus, this education is essential to not only our present, but our eternal well-being. Knowledge is power and power is the force that makes things happen. I love the image of God creating a perfect image of Himself to go out to the limits of humanity in order to gather it all back to Himself. Christ is the perfect God and the perfect Gatherer, the perfect Sacrifice and the perfect Redeemer. It's all perfect in God. How could we want anything more?

I just happened to catch this as it was airing, and with that special energy I took this sermon very seriously and took pages of notes as Bishop Barron preached, and came back to fill in the parts I missed. While I recognize a true Christian is spiritually yoked to Christ and requires a rebirth, I also love to learn, so thank you for providing so many wonderful attainable resources that are so intelligent and thoughtful. God bless you Bishop Barron and your great team!

Carly, you can also obtain a transcript of the video by clicking on the three dots under the title. A screen opens up and you can copy and paste the entire homily. From there are ways also to get rid of the timestamps and fill the page from side to side thus giving you a concise coherent written version of the Bishop's homily.

Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to guide the Church through time. “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.”
The above quote was taken from Bishop Barron's Scripture quote for today. I bring this up because last week at the 5:30 pm Mass, in a Catholic Church in South El Monte, California, I was disturbed by the priest's homily by which he kept referring the the Holy Spirit as "she." Every time he mentioned the Holy Spirit it was as "she." I had never heard the Holy Spirit referred to as a "she" so I know it was WRONG especially since our Lord and Savior himself refers to the Holy Spirit as "he" and rightly and gloriously so. I hope the other Mass goers caught this this grave error and didn't snooze through it.

I always love your sermons but this one tops it all. It was a gentle hike 'around' the great mystery. However, I don't know that it helps any more than the simple understanding of how one human can have many "roles" like wife, mother, homemaker, artist (or doctor or other public identity), each understood as a distinct identity. Take this to a 'higher power' and we get creator, redeemer, sustainer. The really great part to the mystery of the trinity is Pentecost and how the love between the father and son gets 'breathed on' us! I really do love Bishop Sheen's description.

I believe that the more we lovingly share our differences the greater the possibility that the Trinity is recognized. The Trinity shows up in our dialogue. This is our experiential knowledge of the Trinity working through us, “through the logos” or “dialogue” is enhanced through Perspectival knowledge leading to us participating in the logos through liturgy and the every day life of living agape. We approach, perhaps, a deeper knowledge of God through our shared experience of God that we then put into practice, I think. DD

Many thoughts were flowing into my mind as this homily progressed. For some reason I cannot explain, the immaculate conception of Mary made so much sense. She suddenly appeared to me as the perfect human image reflecting all at once the « in », the « from » and the « for » God so eminently that the words from her heart upon Elizabeth’s greeting inspired by God’s own Spirit were: « My spirit rejoices in God » . Is this not the most perfect trinitarian reflex from a human being who bathes in God’s will, speaks from Him and lives totally for Him? I am just blown away by this woman.
