Thanks so much guys for the support! Any topics you'd like me to cover in the future?
Would love to see you take a crack at emulating or analyzing guitar tones from Stoort Neer’s first album, en glad titel! One of the weirdest metal guitar tones I’ve ever heard!
Jokes on everyone as I can make Neural DSP plugins sound like the oldest POD Farm.
pod farm is still sick as hell, it's the only sim capable of doing that digital chuggy tone with absolutely zero dynamics
2008 metalcore was peak
imagine what this guy could do with a $450 bass
😂😂😂😂
Imagine what this guy can do with an actual dingwall🤯
I'd prolly make it sound like a $300 bass
Honestly that DI tone isn’t even that bad! You played it really well. Fresh air is a cool trick on bass, I’ll have to try that!
as a professional listener, this does sound like the pirated copy of djinnbass that i have
Mission Complete.
Can you actually pirate djinbass? Doesn’t it have ilok! …

Been getting this done for a while with my $150 HB 5 string. Glad to see someone finally sharing the power with the people in a productive way! Great tutorial!
That's awesome and thanks so much! What does your FX chain look like? Using the growler as well?
So much EQ.. done so well. Last cut at 400 was nice
Yeah I've got beef with that number haha, thanks so much for the kind words! 🙏🏻
To be fair, Nolly also eq's the living marigolds out of his bass.
amazing tone, but also very impressed by the DI signal. Tight, Punchy, but without any string buzz or plek noise. Yeah the high end needed a boost. That aside, that's one half of the magic already!
Ive never thought to use fresh air on bass, that's really interesting
Saves me buying new strings 👀
This guy’s playing for the initial DI is not to be underestimated. Absolutely tight, percussive and locked in. Give me the same bass and the same chain and it would not sound half that good. 💪
You're too kind! Thank you so much, I really tried my best to get it right!
This guy gonna go viral
Gonna Ding every wall.
Honestly man thank you for this vid I've been really struggling to give my own £200 bass some clarity and just with the free plugins you've used it's transformed my sound!
So glad that I decided to make this video! Really stoked that it worked out for you!
My preferred bass tone is the pure input signal. But then the more aggressive the guitars get, the more you need to scoop that tone. Well done!
Your settings with the Channev plugin sounded STUNNING, really took it to where it needed to be. Great tutorial man!
Thanks so much for the love!
This is so helpful, man! Your ear is the real 👑 here
Truly means a lot! Just had to twiddle the knobs until something worked lmao.
its crazy, it seems so obvious when you hear a great bass sound it has less to do with sick gear and some expensive pickups and more to do with playing clean and precise and then the right eq, compression, fx, but brands want you to believe they have the secret ingredient. Still Dingwall makes some sexy instruments, Ibanez as well, but skill is critical and getting a great tone takes dedication and a good ear. Lots of great free plugins too, thanks for the explanation!
Exactly! You're right on the money, and thanks so much for watching!
This was awesome man! I thought for sure you had been making videos for a while! As a metal mixer on reaper I for one would absolutely love to see your workflow. Please continue making these!
So happy to hear that! I hope I don't lose out on ideas though lol
pretty cool. now try the same and see if you can get close to Justin Chancellor (Tool) tone.
The Riff is called "Prayer Position" by Periphery and that track is just awesome
Sure is! I just had to learn it
@@CropCircleStudios great track and btw a great video. I subbed

It really took a lot of mental fortitude to get myself to start TH-cam, and I'm so glad I did! It feels like the natural next step for me at the moment, and to have my first ever video hit over 20K views when I thought I'd get 20 views is absolutely surreal. I'm curious to see where this goes!
Thank you again for the kind words! 🙏🏻
you just earned yourself a follower! sick video, clean presentation, and it goes to show you dont need the fanciest video equipment to make good content :)
Excellent vid. For those that aren't good on bass (me) clip gain can be a very useful tool when compression doesn't quite feel right yet. Then compress after clip gain. Can help good players too, just a great tool for guitar bass players out there. Clip gain can get a little unreal sounding when the bass is exposed/by itself (very infrequent), but don't be afraid to do very little or a crap ton of clip gain, sometimes .2dB is all needed, or sometimes 12dB. And having few electromagnetic things going to the pickups is good--some rooms have sweetspots as annoying as it is shifting every time you record. Again, great video, thanks for putting it out there.
Ah yes! That's a great point, at times I do clip gain before I do anything to my bass, works really nicely if you end up getting a really sharp pick noise in the DI for example. Glad you found the video useful! Thanks so much 🤘🏻
Actually sounds so killer. Those eq moves were aggressive but they worked fr
When I saw that chain I thought overkill, by the end, I was a believer. You must have a badass computer to run that signal chain and other tracks.
Haha thanks so much! Aside from the limiter, I think the plugins are fairly light to run. I'm using a R5 7600X CPU and 32gb of ram, it definitely starts to struggle when working on sessions with 100+ tracks and with a lot of plugins, I've noticed.
Sick! Finally checked out Analog Obsession, thanks to you. :-)
Glad I could help!
Fresh Air is the ultimate party trick. So underrated for its subtlety, but that's where the magic lies.
The Growler is awesome 👌 great video. Also, your first video? I'm impressed. Thumbnail got me, content delivered what the title says. Looking forward to more 😀
Ah thanks so much for the kind words! You've got me all hyped up lol, this content creation thing is quite a lot of hard work though haha, i have lots to learn! But I think i'll get there eventually. 🦾
@@CropCircleStudios I get it! You are off to a good start
Awesome playing!!
Thanks so much!
What a great, detailled video! Since the Marquess series seems to be discontinued, can you recommend a similar/better Harley Benton Model that is currently available? I love the sound!
Thanks so much! Yeah unfortunately the Marquess line of basses seems to be discontinued now, which is a shame because I believe it was one of, if not the cheapest 35 inch scale bass on the market. Though, anything from the "Prog" line of basses from Harley Benton should be pretty good too! I have a friend who has one and loves it.
Wow, this sounds great! Could you make a video showcasing some more free VSTs? Also, it would be very cool to see something about how to sound like "The Omnific"
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'll definitely look into that!
Very informative and useful, love it.

Sub! Nice one. Well explained and pretty impressive sound indeed. Franckly, your playing done a good part of the sound.
Truly means a lot! Thanks so much for the sub!
I've been able to get a Dingwall-esque tone out of my Sterling bass, but I use Parallax as the amp sim
Love that sim!
bass mix sounds great, I was really impressed with the layering of the eq's and the result is real nice. also the little 2db chopper at the end adds nice consistency. I wanted to ask though, would you end up mixing the full track this way or was it for showcasing the bass? the preview in the beginning sounds massive, but i think dwarfs the other instruments
I've noticed I tend to mix like that a lot, I feel that if you know how your tools affect the sound, you'd then be able to achieve a more accurate result by allocating the best plugin for the task. And yes, i mixed the bass higher in the preview to simply showcase the bass 😁
Very nice dude thank you
From your title one can get an impression that dingwall sounds like what we here at the end of the video. Can you explain how a raw dingwall DI sounds like this?
As in how a Dingwall DI would compare to mine? I sadly don't have a recording of that to truly compare but from what I've heard online, Dingwall's (NG3) tend to have a very beefy and almost processed like sound to their DI's.
It's honestly only kind of close. There's a lot of mud in the DI here that just doesnt exist with a Ding
at around 5:00 i feel like you could just use the internal SC for that band just so it listens to the low end, i'm just guessing you just wanted high end on the lower notes
Yup that was the goal! To add more top end to the lower notes. Though I decided to automate it instead to ensure I don't get any miss triggers, I could perhaps experiment with internal SC more though, thanks for watching!
I've always wondered- Those eq Plugins, like the one at 5:10, what do they do that's different than just a standard para or graphic eq? Do they somehow shape the sound, or compress it, or what is it they do that is different?
Yeah they essentially colour the sound, by adding harmonic content, mimicking the inconsistencies of actual hardware. Great for tone shaping, graphical EQ's on the other hand are a lot more transparent and surgical, which is typically used for fixing problems and what not in the track.
cool mix! what're you using for drums?
EZdrummer 3, with the stock "bright room" sample library. And the preset would be "Prog Metal".
Great Vid!
Nice work. I have a question though, your DI already sounds fantastic to me, I have a cheap af j-bass and the DI sounds like butt, basically pure mud, even with fresh strings. I tried to cut the lows pre amp as much as possible, boost highmids and highs and compreas that but it was such a boost that i get to hear all the buzzes and EMI noise xD what's the verdict doc?
Hmm, is the bass properly shielded? Because that could be a possible culprit for all the excessive noise when boosting the high mids/treble if that's not done correctly. Though you did mention that it is a J bass, so that single coil pickup will inherently have more noise in comparison to a humbucker (unless it's an active pickup). Perhaps shoot me a message with a sound demo of your DI signal, I'll see if I can help ya out!
@@CropCircleStudios thanks man! I appreciate it, can drop you a DM soon
This is amazing! I’ve been trying to get this tone. Would this be possible on a Schecter or ESP bass?
As long as it has half decent pickups
@@bolillo5013 I’m think I’m able to say mine are pretty good. I’ve gotten some good modern metal tones but not like the Dingwall like tone. Thank you very much!
Absolutely! Tight and precise playing with fresh strings are some of the essential prerequisites for achieving this kind of tone, in my opinion. Plus with Schecter/ESP basses, they tend to be geared for metal anyway, so I'd say you're in a good spot!
@@CropCircleStudios Thank you!
Amazing!
Great job man. SUBBED
finally. thanks so much. question, what can i use instead of pro mb? any free plugin reco?
Reaper's stock plugin "ReaXcomp" and Tokyo Dawn's "TDR Nova" are pretty good free alternatives for the multiband compression side of things. In regards to expansion however, its sadly a bit scarce, i would perhaps instead automate my static EQ moves in and out when needed.
@@CropCircleStudiosXcomp can be a expander I think
if you use Ableton it has multiband comp that can do expansion as well
Yep, what people don't realize is that bass tone is 90% playing and new strings. The brand basically means nothing as long as it stays in tune.
Hey dude! First of all let me congratulate you for your knowledge and effort. Very refreshing to see people work on the scientific part of a bass tone. That being said let me give some critique on this. First of all the title. This is not how to make a bass sound like a Dingwall. This is how to sound like Nolly on Periphery records. Which in the end is basically another generic "how to sound like Periphery on bass" type video. Why not sound like yourself ? I mean, you put all this effort to teach people how to get, in a very complicated manner, an expensive tone. Also, about the budget. You might want to factor in the extra cost for any paid plugins you used. In that case the 350 $ thing goes out the window. Want the dingwall tone. Mod you bass with Dingwall Electronics and scoop the mids a tad bit to emulate the 37" scale B string behavior. Oh and get a darkglass B7k and a comp. That's most of it. Yes its not 350$ but its not 3500$. A more comprehensive video would be on how to get a great bass tone in general. And i say this, because you already do most of the heavy stuff in this video. Like you are 70% there. There are some principles that pro Bass Players use (and don't speak about very openly) that you do in this video. Hope this will bring a plus. Cheers dude! Keep it going.
hmmmmm, isnt profab filter like 899? any free alternates?
Reaper's stock "ReaXcomp" and/or "TDR Nova" are pretty good options for multiband compression. Multiband expansion however is sadly a bit hard to come by, therefore I'd recommend maybe automating your EQ moves as an alternative.
That’s why you should have fresh strings
increíble sonido amigo, muchas gracias por esta información, me suscribo desde ya!
Thanks so much! I'm glad i could help
I have a Cort Action that sounds too "weak", so I thought that midi basses could be a solution. Issue : am sort of broke for the moment.
Have been trying Modo Bass 2 (free trial) to get better midi bass, quite cool but not as much as expected
Have been trying a free bass library on Kontakt that sounds awesome, fantastic. BUT you gotta buy the full version of Kontakt not to be interrupted by it.
So, thanks a ton of lots man. I'll try it out, you're a magician :)
This makes me so happy! I hope it works out for you!
@@CropCircleStudios I'll try it out on different approaches, maybe trying it on Modo Bass free, if it works I'll make a feedback here :)
I'm also really happy the algorithm put you forward for people who need you !
How isn't this track just all background noise after boosting the highs like 8 times?
Lmao! Well aside from the gate i have on, I would say that having a clean recording setup/environment paired with a quiet preamp, and preferably a humbucking pickup setup, is pretty bulletproof for getting a clean noise floor. It's actually one of the reasons why i picked up the Marquess 5, i was told that the preamp on those basses were pretty quiet, and its true!
OK but how can we do this live? 😭
You can totally do that! Just get yourself a nice speedy laptop, and play through it on stage! I did that once in high school haha. Just make sure to bypass the limiter, that brings in a lot of lag 😁
Sick video! 🤘🤘
Thanks so much!
Do I need studio headphones for my interface???
You can use whatever you like! I currently mix/master on headphones and then reference on my studio monitors.
you need the pickups placed close together to get the proper sound
If only I knew how to woodwork 😔
Could you give us the numeric values of the settings for CBFet? For some reason everytime that I tried to install it on my computer its graphic interface gets messed up and the knobs don't appear on it, so I can't try to match the settings you're using
For sure!
Attack - 19.5ms
Release - 65ms
Ratio - 3:6:1
Do use it as a starting point, and try to perhaps taylor it to your situation. Hope this helps!
@@CropCircleStudios thanks so much!
@@CropCircleStudios Another question, I shouldn't worry about the other knobs?
Aside from the threshold knob to allow for the compressor to kick in, not really. There is a dry/wet knob that allows you to bring in some of the uneffected tone into it, so theres that to explore. However you might want to add back some volume after compressing the signal with the output knob so that your signal is consistent when going into the rest of the FX chain.
But the darkglass preamp and also the DI makes dingwall that dingwall.
Also, imagine using fresh strings
👍
The high string almost sound like dingwall, but the lowest string is to far. imo
Te faltó soothe al final para matar esa resonancia horrible
