Why Your Mixes Aren't Loud Enough
In this video, I go through mastering my band's unreleased track to provide some insight to someone looking to get into mastering, and how to make your own decisions when doing so.
Hope this helps!

whats your signal chain on bass?
I believe I'm using the Parallax on this one, by Neural DSP
@CropCircleStudios do you have free alternatives besides the growler that do clean lows distorted highs?
@@Maxischupp93 Not that i am aware of. I'd honestly just split the bass tracks up into 2, and use a guitar amp sim for the distorted highs and a clean bass sim for the lows, a couple of good options for this would be the SHB-1 by Ignite amps and the TSE B.O.D V3, hope this helps!
Hi any tips on delay 😭 cant afford a mac but have a good laptop can u help me with the settings 🙏🤙💪🤘
For sure! I don't have a Mac either, running windows for now. The latency is typically caused if you aren't using the correct driver for your audio interface, if you are however, try decreasing the buffer size in the driver settings to as low as you can go without running into any glitches/artifacts. Hope this helps!
Huge tone damn
Thanks so much!
mix meeee
Hey man! Though the offer is past its validity, perhaps shoot me a DM on insta or email me, and we can work something out!
6:23 Wait! U don't highcut/lowcut ur guitars at all?! 😱
I typically do, but didn't really feel the need to in this situation since the IR I'm using is pre-processed
That's a cool and proper bass tone 👌🔥 Oh, dang! U have the Marquess bass! 😱 U know, I had my eye on that ultra cool bass for probably 2 years and then when I finally thought "okay, Ima gonna buy it" it was discontinued!! 😭 I tried asking Thomann if there were more coming later and why they were discontinued, but didn't get a proper answer 😩 The bass had good reviews too, even thou some complained about problems with the bridge, which made me hesitant to buy it initially... 🤔 And although ur end results sounds great, u did similar things with millions of plugins. I think u could have gotten similar result with HALF the plugins by combining things (and having fresher strings, lol)! I'm a fan of keeping plugin chains as simple as possible for sanity and easier management of workflow. And I liked how u kept a wool hat on while mixing with headphones, like a true Alaskan would in -20 centigrade working conditions! ⛄❄
I think I bought the last marquess 5 string bass honestly, once I picked it up from Thomann, I never saw it again on the site. And yes the bridge is quite a pain to deal with, every time you change the strings, you completely ruin the intonation of the guitar since the saddles aren't connected to anything, and can just fall out. In regards to the plugins, you're right I could have perhaps shortened the workflow, but since I'd like to think that I know my plugins really well, I wanted to give myself complete control over the sound even though it might look quite overkill haha. And funny you mention the beanie, I'm actually in Dubai so it's anything but cold here 😆. My hair tends to have a mind of its own so I just threw a beanie on there and called it a day. Thanks so much for watching! I'm currently trying to figure out my next video, would love to know what you'd like to see next!
Mastering isn't something you can just do on your own with a few plugins unfortunately. It's an art in and of itself and takes years to master (pun intended). You can get it sounding pretty good, but if you wanna compete in the industry, good luck. I know seasoned professionals who won't master their clients' songs. I send my songs to a mastering engineer, import their master and make minor tweaks to the EQ. It's like $50 a song and it's totally worth it. They'll do the hard work for you to make it competitive and you just add whatever you think it needs. It's good to get another set of ears on your tracks anyway (I don't mean to discount anything you're saying. I just don't want people to be discouraged and think they suck because their master doesn't sound as good as other music they listen to)
Having a new set of ears is definitely a great thing to have on a production, hard to have issues with the final product with that sort of workflow. I do however believe on the flip side, mastering your own material is a really great way of achieving the exact sonic characteristics you're looking for if you know what you're are doing. Jacob Hansen (one of my favourite engineers) is a great example of this; the guy mix's and master's a lot of his clients work and in my opinion sounds absolutely amazing (do check out his work with the band VOLA). Interesting that you import the mastered file and then EQ from there, wouldn't that add an extra layer of volume since it is already limited? Perhaps a good way to tweak it a bit further if done subtely and/or if you're out of revisions from the mastering engineer. Thanks so much for watching!
Yeah actually it is something you can do with a few plugins and a set of ears and true another set or two never hurts
These are some solid tips. Keep em coming!
this is great easy explained production video. thx
need a licensed production assistant ? to help with channel and future? id love a place to e-mail a resume.
Sure why not! I have my contact details in the video's description.
On the website. The CORALBAXTER does not have a downloawd button. is it still up?
...using $2200 in computers and software.
@@ChristianFerguson-iv6vh Pretty much all the main plugins responsible for the tone are free, and you can run these plugins just fine on any laptop really.
This guy’s playing for the initial DI is not to be underestimated. Absolutely tight, percussive and locked in. Give me the same bass and the same chain and it would not sound half that good. 💪
You're too kind! Thank you so much, I really tried my best to get it right!
The Riff is called "Prayer Position" by Periphery and that track is just awesome
Sure is! I just had to learn it
@@CropCircleStudios great track and btw a great video. I subbed
Thanks so much! Truly means a lot!
@@CropCircleStudios TH-cam has enough space for everyone. I think it's important to support all the new creators who are brave and motivated enough to start an own channel and enrich this platform with fresh content and a new personality. Long story short, good luck with ur channel, Im gonna try out ur tipps in the video and look forward to your next uploads!
It really took a lot of mental fortitude to get myself to start TH-cam, and I'm so glad I did! It feels like the natural next step for me at the moment, and to have my first ever video hit over 20K views when I thought I'd get 20 views is absolutely surreal. I'm curious to see where this goes! Thank you again for the kind words! 🙏🏻
Dang it my bass is 40$
💀
Excellent vid. For those that aren't good on bass (me) clip gain can be a very useful tool when compression doesn't quite feel right yet. Then compress after clip gain. Can help good players too, just a great tool for guitar bass players out there. Clip gain can get a little unreal sounding when the bass is exposed/by itself (very infrequent), but don't be afraid to do very little or a crap ton of clip gain, sometimes .2dB is all needed, or sometimes 12dB. And having few electromagnetic things going to the pickups is good--some rooms have sweetspots as annoying as it is shifting every time you record. Again, great video, thanks for putting it out there.
Ah yes! That's a great point, at times I do clip gain before I do anything to my bass, works really nicely if you end up getting a really sharp pick noise in the DI for example. Glad you found the video useful! Thanks so much 🤘🏻
dude what is that song in the background, it’s awesome

I already have the gojira plugin by neural. Before that i was using amped roots. Interesting to see how you dialled it in 🤘
This was therapeutic, thanks. Also, absolutely love Amped Roots! You bout to go viral, brother 🫂
Thanks my duuude!
This is so helpful, man! Your ear is the real 👑 here
Truly means a lot! Just had to twiddle the knobs until something worked lmao.
hey it me khalifa
Could you give us the numeric values of the settings for CBFet? For some reason everytime that I tried to install it on my computer its graphic interface gets messed up and the knobs don't appear on it, so I can't try to match the settings you're using
For sure! Attack - 19.5ms Release - 65ms Ratio - 3:6:1 Do use it as a starting point, and try to perhaps taylor it to your situation. Hope this helps!
@@CropCircleStudios thanks so much!
@@CropCircleStudios Another question, I shouldn't worry about the other knobs?
Aside from the threshold knob to allow for the compressor to kick in, not really. There is a dry/wet knob that allows you to bring in some of the uneffected tone into it, so theres that to explore. However you might want to add back some volume after compressing the signal with the output knob so that your signal is consistent when going into the rest of the FX chain.
great man!! never give up 🤟
Very awesome. Thank you.
I really appreciate it!
EQ on the guits sound lovely, gonna use this on my tracks
This was more Gojira than now Gojira
Yeah, imma take em' back to their roots
No.
IIII WANT PRINGLEEEES! Great tones dude!!
Thanks so much!
What a great, detailled video! Since the Marquess series seems to be discontinued, can you recommend a similar/better Harley Benton Model that is currently available? I love the sound!
Thanks so much! Yeah unfortunately the Marquess line of basses seems to be discontinued now, which is a shame because I believe it was one of, if not the cheapest 35 inch scale bass on the market. Though, anything from the "Prog" line of basses from Harley Benton should be pretty good too! I have a friend who has one and loves it.
I've always wondered- Those eq Plugins, like the one at 5:10, what do they do that's different than just a standard para or graphic eq? Do they somehow shape the sound, or compress it, or what is it they do that is different?
Yeah they essentially colour the sound, by adding harmonic content, mimicking the inconsistencies of actual hardware. Great for tone shaping, graphical EQ's on the other hand are a lot more transparent and surgical, which is typically used for fixing problems and what not in the track.
nasty sound.
It would be great if you mentioned that the first free plugin you mention from Slate Digital requires an iLok account. I don't have and don't want an iLok account. But you don't find this out until you've already signed up an account to get a free plugin. Without an iLok account you also can't get the plugin. Worse: without the iLok account you can't delete your Slate Digital account. Now, if I want to delete the SL account I have to create an iLok account That is absurd. I'm not doing that. If you want more subscribers you should possibly consider doing a little more research into this kind of thing and include it in your video, because a more cynical person might think you're deliberately being misleading in order to get people to sign up to things they can't get out of and then complain to TH-cam about you, which probably won't help your channel grow. Sorry, probably not your fault, but I find the way Slate Digital handle this completely unacceptable. It should be just as easy to delete an account as it is to create it.
I actually "pirated" Fresh Air even though it's a free plugin just to not deal with that myself haha! One less license manager to deal with, the better. Thanks for the suggestion!
Good job bro
Very informative and useful, love it.
Thanks so much! Glad you found this useful!
That’s why you should have fresh strings
OK but how can we do this live? 😭
You can totally do that! Just get yourself a nice speedy laptop, and play through it on stage! I did that once in high school haha. Just make sure to bypass the limiter, that brings in a lot of lag 😁
hmmmmm, isnt profab filter like 899? any free alternates?
Reaper's stock "ReaXcomp" and/or "TDR Nova" are pretty good options for multiband compression. Multiband expansion however is sadly a bit hard to come by, therefore I'd recommend maybe automating your EQ moves as an alternative.
Also, imagine using fresh strings
Dingwall is pretty look, but has weak voice. Not good bass.
and chinese Bosstone with 5 strings can better. Line 6 HX Effects(ampeg emul+darkglass emul) + NUX Amp Academy = True agression and most powerfull sound.
After owning these for a couple of months I would say they are not worth the hype. I have a set of semi-open AKG’s that I also use and I was surprised at how they stack up against the NDH 30’s. For me the cost / benefit ratio just isn’t there. And no, the 30’s don’t compare to actual studio monitors. I might end up selling these NDH 30’s
Your akg's must be crazy because Ive tried alot of different headsets in hifi stores and studios pricing up to 4k. I also own a pair of planer dynamic headphones but nothing comes close to the ndh 30's. They make everything else Ive tried seem like toys. May be a personal preference for you but what akg's are you using?😁
I bought these headphones and within two days returned them, they enhance the mid range frequencies to the point of disturbing the overall balance, mixing tracks with a wide spectrum of sounds is virtually impossible, at least for me, while editing vocals or individual tracks can be successful, The NDH 30 tends to hide the high frequencies in dynamic tracks, which causes imbalance, focusing and emphasizing the mids, unless you push the headphones a little back on your head, which causes the lows to fade out ,BIG disappointment
Wow, that's fascinating. What are you working with now?
That sounds soo good.
Thanks so much!
thinking about getting these are the mm500 dont know yet
Really curious as to how planars sound, luckily I'll be attending this audio convention where I'll be able to check it out soon, who knows maybe I'll need to drop $1700 on a pair of headphones as well 🥴
@@CropCircleStudios yea let us know if you can do a comparison on both. i heard that planar headphone are so realistic..
I have tried alot of different headphones and own the Hifiman 1000SE. The Neuman 30's make them all sound like toys😅. Atleast the ones Ive tried. Now I want to sell the hifiman and buy neumann speakers😂
@@thapixelduveet1860 damnnn what you think about the mm500?
What do you all mix/master on?
When I saw that chain I thought overkill, by the end, I was a believer. You must have a badass computer to run that signal chain and other tracks.
Haha thanks so much! Aside from the limiter, I think the plugins are fairly light to run. I'm using a R5 7600X CPU and 32gb of ram, it definitely starts to struggle when working on sessions with 100+ tracks and with a lot of plugins, I've noticed.
Do I need studio headphones for my interface???
You can use whatever you like! I currently mix/master on headphones and then reference on my studio monitors.
This guy gonna go viral
Gonna Ding every wall.
