Suffice to say he's a powerful warrior who effortlessly cuts down several of Cao Cao's generals around this time. (Also I don't think he has any spoken lines. He's just a guy who kills whoever Yuan Shao tells him to kill.) That said, things likely would have played out a lot differently if Liu Bei actually had been accompanying him, instead of staying behind with Yuan Shao and fretting over not having any news of his brothers.

Does the new general just have the equipped weapon type that they have and the other weapon from the previous general becomes unequipped and added to the new general's inventory?
I've played this a few times myself. Basically the new general will have the invalid weapon 'equipped,' but since it's not a weapon type he can use it doesn't get factored into his attack power.
Yeah, what xenu said. For the most part, when generals are automatically removed from and added to the party, they will have the same weapon types, to avoid problems. However, there is one instance when it can really get screwed up, which I will mention way later in the game.
