Played as a child with a teacher and got to Grade 3or4? can still read music, 40 years later here I am. Where should I start, very rusty with chords, advice please

    • @Vasioth

1: figure out what you want to learn to play
2: Hire a teacher who will construct a programme for you to develop as both a musician and on a technical level as a pianist
3: Buy a scales and arpeggios book (the ABRSM complete one is brilliant, phenomenal purchase) and really start learning your scales and arpeggios in every major and minor key. This will significantly speed up the process of learning pieces as you will start to connect the dots that many melodies are scalic in nature, many left hand patterns are just broken chords etc.
4: practice rhythms with a metronome. Before you play the piece clap out both the right and left hand parts to get a feeling for the pulse and rhythms of the piece.
5: Enjoy playing. Sometimes progress will be slow, but as long as you're enjoying it it doesn't matter if you're playing the hardest repertoire or not :)

Great idea and to extend it use this and a few other patterns just to practice chord inversions and changes. Instead of just doing drills make music. Root, &, 1st, &, 2nd, &, root, &…. Or start on 1st. And choose some progression 1645… and boom, your making music, instead of doing drills.
