    I don’t usually post comments but I just wanted to thank you sincerely for this. I’ve watched several videos about these 4 chords but they don’t walk you through HOW to actually play them. Your tutorial is PERFECT in content and pace. You don’t rush but no unnecessary chatter either. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am finally able tp practice these chords.

    Great, clear video! This is in contrast to this horrible “masterclass” given by Stephen Ridley today during which he wasted everyone’s time to sell a piano course on the basis of countless testimonials and ZERO content. Best part: someone kept deleting my comments about the lack of content during the livestream. 😂 But my time was not wasted! I searched for good videos about four-chord songs while he droned on endlessly and finally came upon yours! Thank you so much for this! I will be practicing and playing around with these chords immediately.

    This is an extraordinary video which has raised my confidence and knowledge beyond anything i could imagine. I'm a total novice on the piano, whose playing time is in the hours/days, and after watching this, i can play (however badly) Drops of Jupiter by Train just by using the chord progression shown.
    This video also shows the relationship between the notes in a given chord, and how they can be manipulated/amended to allow for subtler sounds. For example, as a complete beginner, i never thought about "inverting" the F note of the C chord to give that much-gentler sound. Absolutely 10/10 here. You've got a sub and a very grateful student of the piano.

    You are a wonderful teacher! I've been playing those 4 chords in root position for a while, never really understanding how to memorise the inversions (except II V I in Cmajor I saw someone using for Autumn Leaves). Between your excellent video on inversions and this one, you've unleashed a big step forward for me. It would be nice to know examples of songs for some of the patterns and rhythms you are demonstrating. For example, you mention Let It Be. Thanks for this. I've purchased a couple of your PDF guides, too.

    your presentation is awesome. You do an excellent job. Not just in the information you present but how you present it. I will touch a couple of the points I think make your presentation one of (very few) best I have ever seen. Unlike 99 percent of the videos out that spend 90% of the time with the presenter babbling about his tough unbringing and how great and wise he is and how he will present very difficult material in simple was blah blah blah you in contrast get into it l immediately. I was learning new material within 10 seconds of you 15 min video. No part of your video was superflous or a waste of time. It was freaking packed with absolutely useful information. Thank I will be watching all you videos henceforth. Excellent I can't say it enough.

    Now I am confused. As a beginner I started into the theory a bit & came across chord directories/charts etc. 12 lists one for each key - C, C#, D, D# etc. Each list was made up of 27 different chords: starting with, taking C doe example, C maj, Cm, C 7 & so on to C 7+5-9. So I assumed that there were 27 chords in every key & they all began with C. Now you're telling me that the key of C also has the chords G maj, F maj & A min &, presumably, others as well. What aren't I getting? Please help.

    Another observation - presumably this progression only 'works'/has this recognisable feel in major keys? Given the different chord structure of minor keys, the 1-5-6-4 structure won't have that recognisable sound, right?
    I mainly ask because I always thought 'Someone Like You' was in a minor key, but it's listed in the description. Perhaps I was just wrong on that lol.
    Thanks!

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes in a minor key, those numbers mean something different, 1 4 5 are minor chords (5 often changed to major though) 6 is major. Although don't forget a relative minor still has the same chords in (the numbers would be different of course) e.g A minor and C major contain the same chords so technically you can still do that progression in a way, would just likely feel a bit different in the context of a minor key where for example A minor sounds more like the tonic, the home and would becomes b3, b7, 1, b6
      Someone like you is in A major btw, it starts on an A major chord, frequently resolves to it and ends on it too which kind of establishes that sound.
      Majors and relative minors can be ambiguous sometimes and even sound more like one or the other in different sections.

      Good spot! That's the Beatles, the verse uses these chords in the first half, it adds a couple of notes in the voicing but C G Amin F is the basic framework. The 2nd half then goes C G then skips A, goes straight to F and does that riff running down back to C

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hand positioning will be key, small changes in that, finding your sweet spot can make all the difference - Plus keeping your hand/fingers relaxed to mould into positions more easily. It gets better with experience. If I play a melodica that has tiny keys you can still do all the same positions when you get the technique down

      The best thing to do is to start with the chords that stick inside of a major key, (couple of recent videos on that I uploaded) All these chords in this one are in the key of C major. Then learn a bunch of songs and think about which chord numbers they use as that's how to understand how they fit together. It's just like learning a language really, copying others to see what works and then adapting things to create something original is a great place to start. Also just experimenting to you can still sometimes find cool things, the only rule is it should sound good to you but using 'rules' like staying in a key is a simpler way to get started 🙂
