The teacher here was pretty clear that this is basic beginner help. I am an adult coming back to beginner learning. The chord method of teaching gave me freedom and enjoyment. I also have longed for “more” but I think it’s really important for beginners to get these basics down first. He did mention that later on in other videos he will be adding things. I can hear the hunger to play beautifully in you! I certainly can identify with that! If I know the chords, I can find my melody within them… and after that the sky is our limit. 😊

I agree, I am proficient in guitar and picking up the piano daily. I also teach guitar and this information is useful for guitar students to understand how chords are constructed on piano and hence guitar! I also agree it’s important to show that leaning these chords will give you access to many songs which you can sing along with! In other words we play guitar or piano to make music so helping someone string chords together efficiently will keep the motivation driving!
      Thanks for a good video!

I watched an earlier version of this over a year and a half ago, and it helped me gain knowledge of chords rapidly. Two weeks ago I dusted off my volume one method books of La Méthode Rose and John Thompson (in French) and started playing all the exercises again. And I'm trying all the songs but to be more musical. My piano teacher noticed an improvement right away and has encouraged me to continue. LMR is bilingual, and anyone wanting to learn French will benefit.
I started playing seventh chords and watched some jazz channels and was completely lost. I decided to master triads before moving on to more advanced things.
Great video, I like what you've done with the channel. Bon continuation.

Wow!!!!! You have helped me a LOT! I have to be taught visual to learn. I am a older student just starting. 1st the Most Important teaching Skill you have is for beginners, you go Very Slowly and you are very thourough.. thank you. So many teachers are so fast and just sit and play their songs very fast to show how talented they are. I get they want to let people know they are smart but im here to learn as a beginner pre K starting . Lol. I loved their talent but vould not learn that fast. But this technique you shared, was crutial for me. You give us so much in your videos. I LOVE THE WAY YOU TEACH THIS LESSON ON HOW TO USE FINGER HAND POSITIONS ON INVERSIONS. NEVER HEARD THAT. WHEN I BEGAN TO TRY INVERSIONS I BECAME OVERWHELMED!! TO SAY THE LEAST.! BUT YOU TAUGHT ME A PATTERN AND A WAY TO PRACTICE 3 AT A TIME, PLUS 3 INVERSIONS, PLUS SAME 3 MINOR AND MAJOR AT Same time. Excellent !! Thank you so much. I have hope and encouragement i can go forward now. Bless you. Have a great day. 😃

I've been playing for a year and a half. Luckily I saw PFS present an earlier version of this video, and I mastered triad chords in no time at all. You're correct, this method is really a breakthrough.
BTW, I'm watching a "beginner" video again, since I started playing through my Volume one method books again. I'm doing every exercise and playing all the songs, working to be more musical. My piano teacher noticed the improvement right away. Never hesitate to go back and try easy things, especially for sightreading.
      Bon courage.

I learned inversions from Elton John songbooks in the 1970s. I could read music at a basic level from learning in 3rd grade so memorizing all major and minor inversions took less time than it did to watch this video. Guitar inversions, on the other hand, are still something I struggle with after 50 years. No white or black keys to visually clue me in - just frets that all look the same.

I'm using the "brute force" approach: chords of 4 notes (with the 7th), I started with C and C#, Major and Minor, (that means 4 chords x 4 positions (1 main position + 3 inversions) = 16 positions of muscle memory). Every day for 2 weeks. After that the next two notes: D and Eb. And go on. After 3 months, with all 12 notes completed, I will restart with C and C#, this time with 7th and half diminished chords (other 16 positions for 15 days), To complete after 3 months. Job completed in 6 months. (Hopefully... :D)

one thing I found Difficult, was to see how the root to the first third, was a different distance from 3rd to the 5th, yet they were both 3rds apart, all became clear when I discovered major chords are made up from a major 3rd and a minor 3rd, stacked on top, to explain a major third is 4 steps away from the root, followed by a minor 3rd, which is 3steps away from the previous 3rd, a minor chord is the opposite, root to the first 3rd 3steps away, the next 3rd 4steps away

as a music teacher (and currently teaching myself to play piano) I don't agree...first, I am learning my major scales (one at a time)...I am adding one scale each week and learning the major arpeggios and block chords of I, IV, V, I...starting with C, then G, then D and so on (circle of 5ths)...I practice the arpeggios of CEG, then CFA then DGB...then G scale with arpeggios of GBD, then GCE, then F#,A, D...and so on....as you continue with the circle of fifths, you gradually build with adding arpeggios that you have previously mastered...then I take a simple song like Amazing Grace to put the block chords and arpeggios into purposeful use as I learn to play and develop my ear...I am learning inversions and scales and chord progressions and how to be musically creative with simple songs and hopefully more complex songs...but I must be patient and practice each day...

3:51 I don't get the "1, 3, 5" thing...E is 4 half steps up from C and G is 3 half steps up from E. I see the white keys thing you're saying but that doesn't work with D, for example.

Hi, when comparing the white key chords, C is major but D is minor. They both have a 1 3 5 but a major chord has a major 3rd (4 half steps from 1) where as a minor chord has a minor 3rd (3 half steps from 1). I recommend checking out this video which is on basic chord construction with major and minor chords

I think you’re supposed to practice it a lot. And all the practice helps you to remember it all.

It makes no sense to describe the distance between the two notes of the 3rds (in root position chord) as the same. These should be distinguished from the outset as major and minor 3rds!

Hi, I chose not to in this case because the added information was not necessary for the point I was trying to make and I was trying keep everyone in the audience focused on one thing.
I was describing 1 general framework for the shape of each position which can then be applied to major chords and minor chords (as well as diminished and augmented) so the generic interval was all I needed to make the point. The focus was on comparing the similarities (a helpful learning tool), not the differences, that’s a pretty standard way to show the comparison between them.
I did make a clear reminder later on that major chords use a root Major 3rd and 5th vs minor chords which use a root, minor 3rd and 5th - what you’re saying is essentially another way of looking at the chord but ultimately gives you that same information. I have other videos on building chords where I describe them in both those ways to help people understand, but basic root position chord construction just wasn’t the purpose of this video. The video was about memorising inversion positions, it’s the next thing to learn after root positions so that’s why I haven’t covered all angles here again.
As a teacher, I have a number of other ways to explain how to learn/practise the fundamentals like chords and inversions but when an already lengthy video is meant to be diving into the details of one method, I have to trim the fat in order to stay on point and some things won’t get included, unfortunately. 👍

Why don't piano teachers on youtube teach chords with passing tones? Static chords are not music. Everyone wants to play the " twiddly bits " with the chords. Too many basic lessons.... not enough effort from teachers to bring chords alive. If only someone would focus on passing tones and runs ...... making chords come alive.

There's thousands of creative videos and specific song tutorials on youtube which cover that sort of thing. There's plenty of room for basic lessons and more musical lessons, both are important. Practicing the fundamental positions we use (like this) allows you to gain more freedom and fluency in the long run, it's easier to use those positions musically when you recognise them easily, they become part of your vocabulary you can play with.

@@PianoFromScratch i agree totally with the latter part of your reply... but disagree with the first part. I'm a jazz guitar teacher and also teach ukelele .... yeah, I know, don't ask me how I got into that one lol, but if you say there are thousands of specific song tutorials, then I counter there are millions and millions of basic, " here is a chord, 1 3 5...c e g...1st inversion e g c...2nd inversion g c e .....etc videos. Millions of them. Obviously I'm exaggerating, but not by much! To make chords musical there needs to be rhythm and connections and transitions between them. No?
I'm trying to teach myself piano and am frustrated with the basic chord videos that I've come across all over TH-cam and in no way am I having a go at your channel at all... I'm just stating my observation of what's available from piano channels in general.
Guitarists love licks. Played over chords they sound good. They are a beginning...a start on the journey. I think that something similar should be taught on the piano and probably is being taught on youtube somewhere....I just haven't discovered it yet!
If you already know your major and minor triads, major and relative minor keys, dominant, diminished and augmented chords, chord extensions 7,9,11,13 etc... on another instrument, then trying to find a piano channel to teach how to rhythmically piece together the jigsaw is hard!
Your channel is called PianoFromScratch, the clue is in the title. I was only paying comment on what's most prevalent on youtube and in no way was having a go etc. Keep up the good work and don't mind frustrated piano playing wannabes like me. But the frustration is real... especially when guitar and ukulele come easy and you have the musical knowledge....piano is hard! I'm just waiting for the day when it'll all click!
Probably three days after I'm dead!
      Good luck with the channel!

If you keep watching videos on YT and perhaps subscribe to a few, I’ve found I see more videos of other players, particularly ’shorts’ that do that kind of thing. Hope it works for you too. 🙏

I humbly disagree. I too come from guitar and I typically navigate the fretboard using small chord voicings and their inversions. Using that framework, I'll target color notes using those chord tones as "landmarks" (e.g., easy to find the #4 to play over the IV if you know where the 5 is within the inversion). As someone who is learning piano and trying to use/apply information gained from another instrument, this type of content is great! Keep it coming!
