By far the most useful channel I've found while working on my son's first car/Jeep. Every day I find a useful video on your channel. Just changed my son's old dryrotted speakers out in his door panels and his tailgate (haven't found any 3.5 inch ones for his front panel yet). And was about to start installing the stereo only to find that it was missing the original harness and a hardwire was going to be necessary. Thanks a lot for the prep help to keep me sane.
Once the interior looks manageable, i want to remove the ashtray underneath the AC control box and put in a rocker switch panel... Will that have to be custom or do you know of any products that already exist for that spot?
I have a 1990 Laredo like (I believe) the Zombie Jeep and Clutchfield sells a wiring harness adapter and map for all the wire colors. Pretty easy install, thanks for showing this Matt!
Awesome video! For anyone doing a stereo swap on their XJ or MJ, I'd strongly recommend picking up the factory adapter. Makes for a cleaner, easier install. I buy mine at walmart for $5-10. Also, don't be sad if you open up your jeep and the wiring colors don't match any of the documentation you can find. Not only did they change the wiring colors every year, it seems like they often used whatever wire was available for some trucks.
I'm not mechanically scarred at all I've done several customs builds frame up mods and restorations I do love watching your Jeep videos though you show the right way to do things. After watching this I went and did the San eput in a CD player and wish I could show you a picture ran into a problem that explains some issues most wires behind the dash are melted together and exposed and nasty. Yay dash removal and rewire time from what I could see 2 feet of wire is melted, charred and or exposed yay. Guess I'll dive in and remove the dash and replace all of that. Yehaw!🤠
I have a '93 jeep yj, and found that jeep original radio harness plug. Plugged it in and connected same color wire to same color other wire. It worked till I soldered the connections and stuffed it back in. worked fine for 20 seconds. then out it went. The yellow wire did not have power (with engine running). Think I blew a fuse. I'll check it tomorrow. Good, inforative video. Thanks - from 2020.
Thank you Matt for this Video this really helped me. Just bought me a 1991 Jeep Cherokee that needs some work ! I appreciate all your vids man ! Keep em coming!
This helped me out a lot! My friend and I are trying to install an older stereo he has laying around on his 88 Comanche. The only issue is that the previous owner was an idiot and cut the wires going to the door speakers so we'll have to figure out something there, but there are already wholes in the doors to accommodate the speakers at least.
I really enjoy watching this guy. You are helping me learn about xj's every day. I would like to see an episode where you identify all the plugs and adapters with in the 87 "or relative" engine housing, you know the sensors and lights all the technical wiring. PLEASE AND THANKYOU MY NAME IS JASON AND IOWN AN 87 Laredo Cherokee in line 6 - 4. 0L MANUAL TRANS.
+bleepinjeep Can you do a video on the clock and how to get all of that working again? Mine has gone out and have no idea what to do or what all goes there
What are the indicators underneath the clock you moved aside? I have a 96 2wd that has then but I've never seen them turn on. Mine also doesn't have a clock there, it's in the tape deck.
jus finished doing this on my 98 4.0 laredo 2wd and it sucked soo bad because my wiring adapter didn't have a ground wire (Scosche)...so i had to splice a new and longer black ground wire to the old short one and add a fork looking spade connector, afterwards i tucked it under a screw on the metal chassis of the new stereo..smh soo annoying..btw please make a video for installing new stereos in the door panel !!
That as well as which wire is positive and negative , how do u handle using the existing wiring harness with an after market coaxial speaker, do u splice and solder, or do u use butt connector s and crimp... Stuff like that
Any videos on upgrading the dash plate? Goal being added accessibility while maintaining aesthetic appeal. I think a 3 piece would due but I'm sure you can come up with a better design
If you're working on a cherokee, the wires going to the driver door are notorious for going bad in the door trunk... you're better off fishing new speaker wire, using 16ga, and only use the 12v ignition, constant and ground out of that harness. Also, it's a good idea to wire up a loom of wire to the remote amp turn-on and a long pair of RCAs, and zip tie them in the glove box... that way you don't have to take the stereo out when you go to install a small sub/amp...
My stereo just shut off driving down the road come to find out my dome lights are out also, no power at the constant 12V no power at the radio fuse or dome light fuse help any ideas please 91 XJ.
The link to diagram isn't 100% right. Mines a 91 and part of the diagram matched and half of a 96 matched. Even my Hanes manual wasn't accurate. Best to buy the 10$ plug if you can find it
Hey Matt I have an xj 01 an when I was installing my stereo my interior light went off an my gauge cluster stayed at 0 ? What could of been the problem checked all fuses there all good but i don’t what I did wrong ?
getting ready to install a radio w/ just mp3 input and sd card reader.. CD's are now out of date! LOL! Wranglers have a screw in the back of the radio that is really hard to get off...
Hey man. Love the video. I just bought a Comanche, and I love it. There's an issue with the radio randomly turning on and off. I can't tell if it's the radio itself, or the maybe the current not reaching the radio consistently. Is this a common problem?
I've used the adapters from Crutchfield on 3 different XJ's. They were free when I bought the stereo from them. I don't care for splicing wires in-dash.
I just replaced the stereo in my Jeep. I found 2 pigtails in mine. The pigtail that the radio is currently hooked up to is connected to the dome lights. Figured that out by shorting a fuse. Oh well it works.
BleepinJeep doesn’t say a specific wire for either illumination or dimmer. I’m assuming maybe the accessory wire? Also some people said to just not use the illumination and dimmer wire idk
After watching this video I think I gotta go back and looking through stereo wiring lol my stereo only turns on when I pull the light switch to running lights
After the install, my radio shuts off when the engine shuts off, and also going from power on, to engine start. Any ideas on how to set it so that the radio stays on?
Most car stereos are wired to accessory power, so the ignition cylinder has to be in the accessory-on position before power goes to the radio. When cranking, the accessories are often temporarily shut off so all the juice can go toward starting the car. If you want the stereo to always have power, you'll have to run a new set of DC 12V power wires straight to the battery. Be sure to put a fuse in the positive line to protect your radio and be careful not to leave it on and drain your battery.
Can't add much to that, pretty complete. I would do the fitment before the wiring, though, just in case you end up with, for some reason, a situation where you aren't able to get it to fit or aren't happy with the way it fits. Wiring harness adapters are nice if you are going to use stock wiring. Also, when crimping you can stagger the crimps and you will end up with less of a big ball of crimps in one spot. Additionally, if you solder and shrink wrap, the connections are also much more compact. That is nice that you could use the stock mount, that is always preferable as most aftermarket mounts are cheap plastic and easier to break and steal the stereo. If it is your vehicle and you plan on keeping it a long time, you could always use one of those cheap label makers to label the wiring. /watch?v=QjQNrUSR2PU Then you'd be set for future stereo work.
Hey Matt, bleepinjeep I have a 94 XJ and I've noticed a few jeeps have that cool clock mod to the left of the stereo. I've tried looking around for one of those but I can't find anything, anyway you can tell me where you got that clock? I think it would be a nice edition to the XJ! Thanks
It's a bit late, but don't splice the radio harness to the car harness. Splice a 2-plug Mopar CAR harness plug (either from a salvage yard or new) that fits Metra 70-1817 to the car side. That way, you don't have to cut and splice the car again to install a different radio.
Old video but new question getting power to head-unit and sound for 2.5 seconds and then it’s cutting out but keeping power to the head unit any ideas? I bought a roll of speaker wire because they’ve hacked up so much of it thinking just running new wire.

I dont know of any but they do make some 97+ ones for the console area although it's easy to make your own.
Best video on how to do this! Just bought a new stereo for my 91 YJ can’t wait to install it tomorrow!

jus finished doing this on my 98 4.0 laredo 2wd and it sucked soo bad because my wiring adapter didn't have a ground wire (Scosche)...so i had to splice a new and longer black ground wire to the old short one and add a fork looking spade connector, afterwards i tucked it under a screw on the metal chassis of the new stereo..smh soo annoying..btw please make a video for installing new stereos in the door panel !!

My 77 FSJ did not have the plastic dash part. Can you do this mod if you have an 8 track?
Hi bro, man do you think that modifying the dash is posible to install a touch screen stereo?
getting ready to install a radio w/ just mp3 input and sd card reader.. CD's are now out of date! LOL! Wranglers have a screw in the back of the radio that is really hard to get off...

Thanks a lot for this man I just did my Saturn myself using this tut :-D
bleepinjeep I got a harness that plugs into the factory plug then u use but connecters to connect the after market stereo
+bleepinjeep hi Mat, I was wondering if you could help me gearing my original radio, it says 'wait 2hr' is there a code I need to enter?
My 92XJ's had bee replaced so many times when i did it for the last time the splices were way in the dash, hard to do.
Hey man. Love the video. I just bought a Comanche, and I love it. There's an issue with the radio randomly turning on and off. I can't tell if it's the radio itself, or the maybe the current not reaching the radio consistently. Is this a common problem?
My Comanche had the same problem ended up running it straight from the battery with a inline fuse and a switch on the dash under the steering wheel
I've used the adapters from Crutchfield on 3 different XJ's. They were free when I bought the stereo from them. I don't care for splicing wires in-dash.
Hey Christopher did you do yours in a 92 Cherokee ?
No, on a 1994,1996 and my current 1998.
I just replaced the stereo in my Jeep. I found 2 pigtails in mine. The pigtail that the radio is currently hooked up to is connected to the dome lights. Figured that out by shorting a fuse. Oh well it works.
our cigarette lighter phone charger shorted out our stereo. I replaced red fuses on stereo and fuse box but still nothing. any suggestions?
Where do the illumination wire (light blue/red) and the dimmer wire (orange) from the factory harness plug into the radio harness?
You’ll have to check your radio manual
BleepinJeep doesn’t say a specific wire for either illumination or dimmer. I’m assuming maybe the accessory wire? Also some people said to just not use the illumination and dimmer wire idk

darn previous owner of mine removed that metal bracket and now I'm screwed for installing any radio because I can't find that bracket anywhere
junkyard
None of the 7 xj's at my jy had it. Luckily someone sold me the entire stock radio for $20 and even drove it to me lol
Can't add much to that, pretty complete.

Unfortunately for me the 96 radio trim doesn't come off as easy
Hey Matt, bleepinjeep
I have a 94 XJ and I've noticed a few jeeps have that cool clock mod to the left of the stereo.
I've tried looking around for one of those but I can't find anything, anyway you can tell me where you got that clock?
I think it would be a nice edition to the XJ!
Thanks
Old as fuck but they come stock with some jeeps, depending on the year. P sure it was determined by whether or not your radio showed the time already
what kind of radio
It's a bit late, but don't splice the radio harness to the car harness. Splice a 2-plug Mopar CAR harness plug (either from a salvage yard or new) that fits Metra 70-1817 to the car side. That way, you don't have to cut and splice the car again to install a different radio.
I have a jeep and when wired somehow it just kills my battery
I have the exact same radio in my 89 jeep cherokee
For some reason your voice and manorisms remind me of a young Red Green
bleepinjeep Keep your stick on the ice!
Nothing worse than getting it all mounted in....then realizing you forgot to connect the Antenna, haha.
StormLaker1975 haha that's why I test before putting everything back together. kinda figured he would but must of skipped that step
Tore my entire XJ interior apart, painted it, put it back together, realize i left the antenna deep in the dash.. :(
I literally don't see a pink wire in my wiring harness wtf did this guy do to this jeep?
lucky for me I bought my jeep with no radio so I just have a bunch of wires sticking out of my dash. can't stand it
artardFTW same idk what the hell is going on nothing matches anything I find online
Great video but that banging noise in the background throughout the video is really annoying.
$30 for a factory harness???? Where do you shop? LOL. Those are $5-$10 and worth their weight in gold!
It’s... that easy!?
you wouldnt get banned your video would get taken down and youd be warned
Old video but new question getting power to head-unit and sound for 2.5 seconds and then it’s cutting out but keeping power to the head unit any ideas? I bought a roll of speaker wire because they’ve hacked up so much of it thinking just running new wire.
