    I prefer the GC version BUT maybe because I have listened that song all my childhood. The new version is pretty good. I like the fact that Nintendo used real instruments, it really sounds awesome.

    How can people prefer synthesized sounds over organic instruments?
    The NGC version was a very good piece of synthesized music, but when I came around Windfall Island for the first ime on Wii U, my first words were "Oh, they remade the music with actual instruments! This is so good!"

      I'm pretty sure the Wii U version is using MIDIs too...just higher quality. It feels less game-ish though.

      I prefer the GameCube soundtrack because it sounds much more consistent with the style and sound of previous games (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask)

    • @headmasterhastings4884
      @headmasterhastings4884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it might just be a higher quality recording of the same MIDI. Obviously Kondo and Minegishi would have all their MIDI data backed up or stored somewhere, so it’s possible they dug up the old MIDIs and reassigned the compressed samples to uncompressed versions of the sounds.

    As an audio engineer i can really appreciate this move. I'm sure if they put in some of the orchestrated tracks from their symphony of the goddess tour they would've been out of place but remastering the original tracks for higher quality and binaural surround outputs was brilliant idea. I wonder if this will support 5.1 and how that'll sound on such a system.

    I think they remixed it because of the shitty speakers that hdtv's come with nowadays, old crt tv's had better acoustics, as well as more space for the bass to shine.

    The new flute articulations are done very nicely...puts me even thinking, that they might not be samples at all, but then again the interactive nature of Wind Wakers music wouldn't work with just static recording. Perhaps they have really put a lot work into their synthesizer, at least there was also real time effects in some of the new arrangements

    I love both versions very much! However, I'd have to agree that the Wii U's version is much deeper and richer and really allows you to hear each individual instrument better.
    Fun Fact:
    Windfall Island's theme is actually a slightly faster remixed version of Kakoriko Village's theme.

    Having never played the original one I have no feelings towards it. I'm definitely liking the Wii U version more, the strings just sound so much brighter and it's overall more vibrant. It does seem that the original does have some more reverb and feels a little more whole.. but with the new graphics and brighter appearance of the game, I think the new music will fit better.
    I'm definitely picking up the bundle when it's released.. really looking forward to playing this game.

    The percussion does seem to be mixed a little low in WWHD, but just from what I hear the song in the gamecube version sounds mono, or flat. Like every instrument is set front and middle of the track while the Wind Waker HD sounds they they took the time to give every instrument some acoustic space.

  • @TomBesser

    The biggest difference I detected with headphones was that the original mix had the percussion panned hard to the sides and the melody instruments were bunched up in the center. This is not typical for most stereo recordings, but I can guess that it might have been done to support more TVs without 5.1 home theater systems. In the Wii U version, the mix was reversed to put the main percussion in the middle and the instrumentation was spread out, which gives a more natural feel to the end result.

    i like both just fine and will enjoy the WW HD remake for sure. but the GC music sample felt more pleasing to my ears in more sections than the other. But i've always liked old video game music alot. Of course this is one quick video swapping between the two.. given more time and hearing them both fully i may change my mind. Either way a good track and excited to play~

  • @varoennauraa
    @varoennauraa 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    HD not only has far better samples(yes in percussion too, they are just mixed lower for better balance), it also has real time effects now, and improved synthesizer allows more realistic articulations.
    The improvements on the synthesizer is super exciting for me, as it allows Nintendo to continue to make interactive music, like what Wind Waker has. Music is infinitely more absorbing, when the music follows game play and describes your actions. Check Phantom Ganon fight for example.

    As a transcriber and game music composer, I must say that I think Nintendo did a really GOOD job remastering this track. I think why so many feel the original is better is because it is what we remember. As for how "empty" the revision may or may not sound, keep in mind that the original is slightly muddier from the sample rate and possibly equalisation, filling in the frequencies more. A clear and crisp sound is generally better, though.

    When it comes to sound chips, GameCube/Wii has a 16 bit Macronix DSP with 64 ADPCM compressed voices and Stereo base Pro Logic II virtual surround sound while Wii U Has a 32 Bit Macronix DSP with 128 Linear PCM voice's although 64 of them can also be ADPCM for Backwards Compatibility and has 5.1 channel discrete sound sound.

    And before anyone asks, I played the original Wind Waker when it came out in 2003, got it for my 13th birthday and I freaking love the game, but now I'm 23 years old and frankly I'm getting sick of people who's decisions on what they think is "better" is based solely on nostalgia and nothing more. This is why I also really hate this "90s kid" phenomena I'm seeing around the internet, it's just sad to see a bunch of people from my generation who can't learn to just move on with life...

    It hard to creat interactive music that changed on the fly like for the battle theme's with recorded streamed orchestra. That why on Skyward Sword which had prerecorded orchestra they simply added a simple bland drum beat when close to an enemy instead of an orchestral battle theme cause if this problem.

    The difference here is that this is actually a remake with significant improvements over the original, those collections are just ports with minimal changes from the originals, personally I want to see more like this, I'd love for Nintendo to make HD versions of other Gamecube games like Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros. Melee, and maybe even some third party games like Baten Kaitos and Skies of Arcadia, and speaking of Metal Gear they should make an HD version of Twin Snakes as well.

    The Wii U version seems to have crisper instrument sounds, though the mix they're using (or perhaps the equipment they're playing it through) sounds a bit muffled, in my opinion. It's as if the mid-range is far too present, and the instruments can't ring out as much as they should, even though they're trying so very hard to do so. The instruments themselves, if you can pick them out individually, sound far greater than before.
