    • @ashleyunderscorebl
      @ashleyunderscorebl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Meloco ; the "layer of blue" is a simulated atmospheric perspective effect, like how mountains turn bluer as they become more distant from the viewer. it's to give more of a sense of distance for far off objects, and gives things like distant islands/the giant tower in the middle of the map more of a silhouette. when you're on the ocean it helps make stuff like the transition between the "close" wave effects and "distant" wave effects look smoother and it fits the art style of the game pretty well. a big part of the game's artistic design is how islands go from silhouettes to actual detailed islands as you travel closer on your boat and the atmospheric perspective helps smoothen the transition.

    • @bunsmasterbunny

    That flat blue water looks much better on GameCube than Wii U. It didn't need all those shadows disrupting it; the simplicity is the point. And the shade of blue is prettier.

  • @GhabulousGhoti
    @GhabulousGhoti 7 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    The lighting in the Wii U version is not exactly an improvement. It's a stylistic change, which means it's not objectively better or worse, but rather opinion based. Simply put, the remake is no longer cell-shaded, so it cannot be called directly better.

    • @GameOverJesse
      @GameOverJesse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Ghabulous Ghoti great points. But the lighting changes weren't the only thing changed. The textures are improved as well. I know some like the new version, but others like the original more. Personally, I like both of them. What about you?

      I prefer the original. I do agree that the textures are improved and there was some gameplay improvement (though I don't like how they changed wind control), and I LOVE selfies, though the new graphics kill it for me, and I didn't need faster sailing or a redone Triforce quest enough for those changes to make me ignore the graphics, sadly.

    • @barrelbarry9940
      @barrelbarry9940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    • @Gaming_Legend2
      @Gaming_Legend2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Barrel Barry u sure? The thing is that only the original art team can tell you that, the original decided to do what it did because of the technical shortcomings like having no shadows at all, and the new version doesn't really look bad, it does something a lot of toonshaded games, movies and media in general do that is having an extra layer for bounce lights and global illumination on top of the toon shade, they could have improved on top of the original style but they decided to expand on it because the toon shadow is still there but 2 extra layers and actual projection of light on top of the character

      The WiiU version has a lot of unneeded lighting effects. A perfect example is when your character gets an item from a chest, Link looks like he turns into clay. The bloom lighting is too bright. Among other issues. Gameplay wise though, the wiiu version is better.

    The original flat shading of the GC version is very clean. If you could have the GC's lighting with the upscaled textures of the Wii U version, that's the right look for the game.

  • @zacksmovies

    The bloom, the inexplicable gradient shading, and the color palette of the Wii U remake are not too hot. It looked like a very dated, overly-filtered 2007/8 game on the day it launched in 2013, whereas the original is famous for having a timeless aesthetic. If they had gotten that remake to look halfway decent, I would have bought a Wii U just to play it.

I must admit that although the game is getting old in years, it certainly has aged very well and still looks very beautiful. • @TheShangryLlamas
    @TheShangryLlamas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Hey Jesse (and everyone else), you should use Hypatia's texture pack. It has 4K textures in it. You can also use Ishiiruka's settings (an amazing mod of Dolphin) to simulate the bloom if you really want, but I personally think it doesn't look great and I much prefer the aesthetic of the original.
    The only thing I find better in the Wii U version is the modified triforce quest, but you can honestly simulate that with gecko codes too if you want.

    • @TheShangryLlamas
      @TheShangryLlamas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to see a comparison with the textures!

    • @GameOverJesse
      @GameOverJesse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheShangryLlamas the 4K comparisons are only to show what the original game looks like in 4K. Not necessarily to show how good it could potentially look with mods and texture packs. I tried changing the lighting with my skyward sword comparison and received a ton of hate for "ruining" the game.
      So all I'm doing now is simply rendering in 4K. However, this game already had an official HD remake so I decided to include it as well

      Yeah, but its important, because there are remasters that change the entire look of the game completely. Color filters and art style make up a big part of the games experience and theme. If they were changed a lot you will find a lot of angry fans that will be angry. Look at how people received the RE4 game when it was remastered. Most said that they dont recall the game to look the way it does now and that ruined their experience. He had to use the gamecube version to compare the changes that were made to it in the 4k version and in the wii u version.

    1:49 Great video, appreciate the work you put in.. But zooming in like this isn't giving you a good idea of what it actually looks like. Whatever program you used to blow up the images is resampling them at a much higher resolution. Zooming into the image would give you the actual pixels, not a blurred mess. The 4K version makes zero sense in all cases because your eye can't resolve the difference if you're sitting a reasonable distance from your tv/monitor.

Also, if you have a decent cpu thats running at least 4ghz you should have zero problem maintaining constant 30fps besides 2 points in the game.

  • @VanguardSupreme
    @VanguardSupreme 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Is this supposed to be an endorsement of the Wii U version? Because thanks to that sweet, sweet lighting, colours and textures, _Wind Waker HD_ for the Wii U still looks by far the best, once again demonstrating that it's not just about pixel count but what is done with the pixels. that matters.

    • @bunsmasterbunny
      @bunsmasterbunny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Windwaker HD looks worse in my opinion because of all the unneeded "enhancements" that detract from the original art style. The shadows are nice even if they are unneeded and the higher quality textures are great (Except for the vines behind the bomb house what the heck happened there) but the light bloom, over saturated colors, and gradient clay like character models really look ugly in comparison.
      Stuff like making the Frozen Hyrule section Sepia tones instead of black and white is just baffling as well as looking in my opinion vastly inferior.

    • @VanguardSupreme
      @VanguardSupreme 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could understand the attachment to style some people have if the original game actually had with chunky outlines typical of cel-shading to better match the official illustrations, but it didn't even bother to do that, opting for the non-contoured "toon-shading", a look which I believe WWHD better fulfills.
      I find WWHD's smoother, buffered shading much more appealing than the clunky shading of the original. It's also brighter and more colorful yet more subdued and subtle (like night time). That's just more dynamic range to me. I honestly can't think of a single thing that the original does that WWHD doesn't do better.
      But to each their own.

    Personally I think the Wii U and 4K HD version are about the same in how good looking they are.
    It just depends if you want to look at a more realistic, vibrant, polished version (Like most Zelda games) of Windwaker (Wii U), or if you want the sharpened, cartoonish look that Nintendo was going for when they first made the game (4K HD). Both of the versions still remind me of when I was a little kid.

      The user DOES NOT see aliasing, we do because we are watching a 4k video on a tiny window, if you fullscreen it helps but it doesnt fix it because 1080p monitors don't have enough pixels to sharpen the image the way you would see it on a 4k monitor/tv

    i totally disagree, i think 4K wind waker looks considerably better than the Wii U remake. The Wii U version's bloom and ambient occlusion effects seem to suck the colour out of everything, either that or they deliberately recoloured the world to reduce saturation. The lighting in the original is much flatter too, which i think was the goal for the game's art style. I think the HD version would look better if they avoided changing lighting altogether (except maybe to improve shadow resolution) and just upgraded some textures and remade lots of the models for fewer jaggies.

      The game isn't meant to look real or alive, it's meant to look like an 80's/90's cartoon which had very simplistic lighting and deep coloration. The cel shading is meant to make it blend together like 2D animation does. The Bloom not only goes against the entire point of the art style but it also wasn't well implemented as the characters look like clay models sometimes and the shadow effects aren't even dependent on what time of the day it is, they stay visible even if it's night time.
      Textures are the only thing that is objectively better in the Wii U version (Depending on the texture, the vines on the back of the bomb house look awful in the Wii U version in my opinion.) The colors, lighting, art style, gamma, black level, and everything else is subjectively better/worse, however it is true that it's not what they envisioned the game as looking like.

      Yeah, I agree. Resolution and texture quality don't mean anything when the rest of the art style looks awful in comparison. TheMursk If we keep with the model we've been using this entire time, then the Nintendo Switch would fall into the 9th generation. But honestly all companies seem to be changing the tactics they've used historically so describing things by generations might end up being a thing of the past anyways. Microsoft said they are not going to be releasing consoles in generations anymore and want the console market to be more like the PC market. Sony is also releasing different versions of the PS4 sort of following this trend. Nintendo seems to be the only one who might be sticking with the generations model but then again we'll be using a term that only accurately describes a single company.

    Is there a functioning and reliable Wii U emulator yet? I would love to see the remake at 4K and compare that to the orginal on Dolphin at 4K.

      CreepyQuantizer I'm saying I like the changes they put into the HD remake, such as the shadows and whatnot. I'm sure the 4k TV would look awesome tho, but this is TH-cam lol.

    Am i the only one who thinks the Wii U version completely butchered the game's visual style?
    That's not even cel-shaded, they just added bloom all over the screen and made the game run like shit. It looks terrible in comparison.

    I kind of like that far objects look a little blurry and not super clear...also in the 4k screen there doesnt seem to be any effect of nothing like breeze or some other kind of effect, it almost looks too clear to even look real.

    The Wii U version doesn't seem to be running at 60fps. Many drops noticed. Why not mention this in your analysis.

      because the dropped frames is just his fotage or capture card

    When we se an object from far away, we dont se clear, and in the "4k" texture pack, they remove the fog that have in the original gc version, i dont know why, because our human vison are not perfect to se long distances at all.
