Nissan 370Z vs Porsche Cayman 987 | In depth depreciation analysis and buying guide

  • If you are buying your first sports car, the Nissan 370Z and Porsche Cayman simply must be on your shortlist. The general conception, however, is that the Porsche Cayman will hold its value a lot better. But is that really the case? Let’s find out what the data says.
    The analysis is structured as follows:
    1. Price ranges for the 370Z
    2. Depreciation per year for the 370Z
    3. Depreciation per 1000km driven for the 370Z
    4. Comparison of the numbers to the Porsche Cayman’s numbers.
    If we look at the price ranges of the Nissan 370Z, we can see that they fluctuate a lot and that prices vary from EUR 15.000,- to EUR 45.000,-. We can also see that the manual cars are, on average, a lot cheaper than the automatic cars. It’s also no surprise to see that the Nismos are a lot more expensive. In terms of depreciation per year, an average 370Z loses about EUR 2000 per year. When we look at the depreciation per 1000km driven, we see that this is about EUR 130,-. Comparing these numbers to the Porsche Cayman, it becomes clear that the 370Z actually depreciates less than a 987.2 Cayman. In fact, the numbers are more in line with Porsche Cayman 987.1

    Back in time, i bought my 2018 370Z Nismo in K23 silver for 37T€ for a special deal, the car was brand new without any mileage. Today, 4-5 years later, the car is worth >40T€ with a mileage of only 4.500 miles on it.... I also got a offer deal for 44 T€ for mine but refused, but the car keeps stable and got more expensive since the 370z is the last n/a engine and the 400Z does not come to Europe...

    I'm confused, what did I miss? If the Cayman depreciates significantly faster than the Nissan, why would you recommend the Cayman?

      Good point! I should have probably added that I would go for the 987.1. The depreciation rate on that car is more or less the same as for a 370Z. However, the comparison is not 100% fair because the 987.1 is an older car.

    You need to segment them further by how many kilometres

      Manual may be cheaper than automatic because they may be driven more, and may have more mileage, not sure.

      @@paulhoang9820 Thanks for the suggestion. If I would have coloured the bubbles at 6:34 according to the transmission type, would that yield the categorization you mean? In any case, i checked (among others) if there is a significant difference in the km distributions for manual and automatic cars, this was not the case. I, therefore, don't think that the difference in price for transmission type is due to km.

    Why 7AT is more expensive?
    to compare the 6MT and 7AT...MT, AT (old AT technology with torque converter), AT robotized (is MT robotized...fake new AT)
    the 7AT is more reliable with its old gearbox technology with a torque converter (1), which is the slowest.
    this is also true for the comparison of automatic gearboxes which are robotised mechanical gearboxes (2) (traditional mechanical with 2 clutch disc (like manual MT), but robotised. sometimes with 2 half gearboxes...pdk and other...) and which is very expensive with weaknesses. bad reliable.
    then there are the undersized torque manual gearboxes (3) (for sports cars), like the 350z and 370z. the number of speeds (7...8..speeds) contributes to avoiding the break in torque between each speed, especially at high engine speeds.
    For track day... MT is more better, but with weakness undersized torque manual gear box and synchronous.
    sports cars with a torque converter are reliable and rare...i compare the 3 gear box...i never wrote if Nissan (Datsun) is good or very bad...or 370z MT.

    I bought the Cayman S more than a year ago for 20k. Today is the cheapest Cayman S in Slovakia for sale for 26k :) from my perspective its more of a appreciation than depreciation.
