I once had a mechanic tell me my tires were making noise because my transmission was shot. That obviously makes absolutely zero logical sense, so I took it to another mechanic a co-worker recommended. They told me the noise was from my winter tires and there was nothing wrong with the car. Needless to say, I never went back to that first mechanic again. Like Scotty is saying, there are a lot of dishonest mechanics out there.
New Z is not a failure, dealers can't get them in sufficient numbers yet, or the ones that do have them have ridiculous markups on them. Give it time, they will sell just fine.
They're not failures but by most accounts, Nissan didn't go anywhere near far enough with the redesign. The 400 would have been a really nice update back in say, 2010. But after 19 years of 350/370Z cars that changed little after all that time, people were expecting a lot more out of the new car. Ditto, the Titan and Frontier pickups. Too dated, even though their design is all-new.
They do have a couple of issues: The clutch master cylinder usually fails and needs to be upgraded with an aftermarket version, and the key can fail leaving you unable to start the car. Other than that it's a very impressive car, IMO. It's kinda like the poor man's supercar.
I have a 2006 350z since 2015 it runs great still with 169k miles. I redline it everyday, amazing its never had engine or transmission issues. It really does run like a top.
@@flea4061 Do you know what the term pricey means? That means the 2012 convertible 370 -Z- for $32,000 is expensive for a 11 year old car. I think you don't know about cars..
Funny this came out now; Friday when I was coming home from work, after I got off the highway, there was this young kid in his nissan z-car with the hood up and steam coming out. People do your research when getting a used one of these. Cars can be as bulletproof as possible, but never underestimate a younger guy with a sports car. They'd cook any engine you could imagine in less time than you'd think. None of us guys were really smart when it comes to cars when we were that age
Speak for yourself. I started in auto mechanics class as a junior in high school, been taking care of mine and other peoples cars ever since. I surely wasn’t stupid about cars, even at 17.
It could have been a blown radiator hose....a leaking radiator.....something like that. I've usually been smart about cars.. I started learned when I was young, and I went to school for automotive in high-school and continued learning after highschool
Unfortunately they get some bad rap for kids who don't do maintenance. But for the people (like me) who do even the most basic maintenance, the car itself is built amazingly well.
NEver abused mine but ran them hard at times. Couldnt afford to replace a blown one. Type you talk about were in HS, parents paid for them must be nice
A friend of mine had a 370z and it was a fantastic car to drive. His only complaint was that it was very noisy in the cabin. Sure it's a fun car and a good-looking car, but you're not always tearing around. If you jump on the freeway for a 100 miles the noise is going to be fatiguing. Still, it's an awesome car and a great value.
I'd suggest kilmat, a cheaper version of sound deadener. Also fill voids between the wheel wells and interior panels with cloth insulation where you can. It goes a long way to quieting things down.
Had a g37 basically same as this and that had 280,000km on its before I sold it. Then got a q50s with the 3.7L and that now has 200,000kms on it now. No major issues with them and I raced my g37 all the time at the track and did abuse the car. Videos are on my channel. But only normal maintenance and they kept on going
I have a 2013 370z Nismo. Bought it in 2012 w/ 5 miles out the lot. Now it's at 225K miles. I go thru a set of tires a yr. I take it camping, go thru snow (light), take it on really bad dirt roads, packed lumber in it, and long road trips. It's my daily commuter as well. Still has the original suspensions. I red line the car almost every time getting on the freeway. Lots of fun zipping thru curves in the hills/mountains. I drove it over 100miles the 1st day I bought it and took it up to 110mph the 2nd day (which you should not do with new cars). I'm surprise the engine & car lasted this long. It had a blown head gasket for about a yr now, so I am replacing it at the moment. I'm not a mechanic nor have experience with car engines. Hope it turns on after I put it all back together.
I owned a 1987 Nissan 300Z and it was a slug. It had a v-6 engine rated at under 200hp and the car was just plain heavy. I loved the looks of the car and the interior was pretty nice too. The new 370 such as the one in you're video is a true Japanese sports car.
Interesting story. Son had a 300zx 2+2 manual first car drove it for 10 years . Went to Nashville auto diesel college back and forth to S.Carolina digital dash . Then moved to Charlotte while in Charlotte he buys a 350z 2003. Drives that all around Charlotte while he works as a diesel mechanic for the bus company parks the 300zx for 3 years. Goes to get a trailer when he's ready to move back to S.C to trailer the 300 home. His 350z goes in limp mode . He puts the 350z on the trailer and drives his 300zx home after sitting 3 years. BTW the 350 had a short in the harness he found a week later. .
@@defyyourlogic487 When the 350z was first released in 2003, it was pretty quick for the time. 0-60 in 5.3 to 5.6 seconds, 1/4 mile in the 13.9 to 14.1 range. It was as quick or quicker than a Mustang GT of the same year.
I love my 370z. I 've looked into the "400"z but I can't see going in debt for a new Z when mine is paid off and runs great. I also have a convertible top, which the new Z car does not. Not worth 50k and up in my opinion.
@@blademanx the 40k price point they were advertising for the base model was pretty reasonable, us dealerships are just horrible tho charging 20k over msrp.
Looks like the car has a great anti-theft device, it’s called “manual transmission”! Hardly anyone knows what they are or how to drive them these days!
I have an 09 370z that I daily drive to work. Been mine for 6 or 7 years. I love this car. Going to repaint it and keep it for as long as I can. I hate digital cars.
Same. When I read your comment I thought "did I post that?" Getting some minor bodywork on mine, along with paint or vinyl. Love my '09, it's a keeper.
As long as those dongles are made correctly (no excessive current draw or EMI) they are good to be left plugged in for long drives. Just consider unplugging them if you're not driving the vehicle cause they'll drain the battery!
Yep, I have one each in my Mustang, Silverado, and Camry that stay permanently in the OBD ports and have never caused any issues. The one in my truck has been in there for about ten years.
My neighbour a woman in her late 50’s used to take her 350Z to the drag strip every weekend so you never ever know how any car gets treated. This is why I hate buying used!
I had a 370Z for a few years. I’ve noticed the motor is pretty noisy. So is the clutch too. I thought I had a knock but after doing researching and asking other owners, it’s “normal” lol It was a fantastic and fun car. It never gave me an issue except for the clutch slave cylinder that went out. It’s located inside the transmission bell housing so it was quite some work.
I have a 2010 Alfa Romeo 159 1750 Tbi Ti (petrol), the motor is really noisy in that, quite a heavy knock at idle, turns out it's perfectly normal, something to do with the fuel system, sounds rubbish though, i recon that's why most modern engines have plastic covers, to try and drown out the crappy racket they make.
Lucas synthetic motor treatment. I had a court about twice a year my valves making 0 noise. My friend and I crank the car and put it in as it was running and you heard it go off from making a bunch of Racket to absolutely silent. Lucas makes the best additives I used it all my vehicles.
You can get an aftermarket slave cylinder put on outside the bell housing. Many 370z owners do that. Also clicking from rear wheel is the main wheel nut as it comes loose. Think there is an aftermarket nut many put on.
The new z has good power but it’s not selling well because the markups are too high on it in my opinion. If they sold it without markup, I know people who’d buy it
I've owned my 2015 for 6 years and have had no issues. She's at 55k miles now and figured I'd do the spark plugs with the next oil change Still runs like the day I got it
I do agree on his statement of turbo charging the new Z. One of the biggest upsides to the Z has ALWAYS been it’s N/A engines. Being a huge fan of the Z/G series Nissan/Infiniti have always had, I love the idea of a N/A engine. Adding turbos to an engine really make for issues down the road. We personally own a 2011 FX35 AWD and it is a blast to drive. For a 4300lb crossover, it absolutely flies.
You do realize the 300ZX was in fact turbocharged and very reliable right? The new Z isn’t the first time Nissan threw turbos in the Z line. They flipped back and forth between N/A and FI with every few models.
I love My 2006 fx35 VQ, 250,000 miles and counting, Nissan really gone down hill when they stopped the VQ platform now it’s CVTS, way to many recalls with Nissan and Infiniti
Still have my 15' 370Z Sport Tech and in showroom condition with 51K miles, so Scotty is right. These are good cars and NOT interested in buying the new one!!!
I had two G37’s (a 2008 and a 2010) with the same 3.7 VQ engine as this 370Z. They were absolutely fantastic cars that I bought both brand new and I loved both of them! I do disagree with you about the new Z. It’s an awesome car and the Red Sport turbo engine has been around for years in Infiniti Q50’s and is generally a reliable and powerful engine. Plus, the new Z just looks incredible! I love the Z32 300ZX-inspired tail lights especially!
im a Z owner and i have mixed feelings about the new z. theyre definitely not what worth what it costs to drive one out from the dealership. i can get a gtr for the amount. plus, id wait for the revised ones to come out before anything so in a few years
That's right Scotty the370z is a great car performs great I have a 2020 anniversary edition in and I've got a tweaked in it runs good and I'm a seventy-year-old Vietnam veteran who likes to ride and likes fast motorcycles yet
You can adjust the lash on the intake side by replacing or grinding the buckets. We do it all the time. As long as your in spec the VVEL doesnt care. And i say we do it all the time in the sense of doing a valve job. Ive never seen a oem 370z need valve adjustment and im a master nissan tech.
Good video Scotty, thank you for the upload. I agree the 370 Z is my favorite since the 240 and the 280 the 300 and the 350 were OK. This is just my personal opinion.
I've got to come to appreciate the capability of these sports cars. Their heritage is in the badging, and performance! Yes its a V6 instead of a inline design engine, but the newer ones are alot more efficient, plus the aftermarket for parts and tuning is extensive. Im not a fan of them, but having owning one now, I really like it! Its fast and small, I cant wait to get back in another mopar doe lol! But for now, me and my 370z are gonna be great buddies! 🤣🤣
When I was a kid, every time Dad drove in for fuel, some guy would "check the oil for you Sir?" . Ever time, they would declare it needed oil. ........well of course all the oil running round the engine did not show on the dip stick, Scotty's right.
I have a 2014 with 140k miles, and got it 2.5 years ago I’ve tracked it 6 times in that time frame. In my opinion, this is the best performance car you can get for the the money. Runs like a clock and requires very little maintenance.
New Nissan Z failure is due to the dealership, not the car itself. Dealerships have hiked the price by double to triple the price. No one wants to buy it for the price hike given that you can buy a Mark V Supra for much cheaper. Dealerships are ruining the new car market. It is too bad, but oh well.
Great video! I owned a Base 2010 370z in my early 20's and had dreamed of a z car my entire life. It was an awesome car, but I really couldn't afford it at the time. I had to learn a valuable lesson about being impulsive and taking on ridiculous monthly payments. After 12 years, I'm looking to pick up another 370z and am excited to get behind the wheel again.
i bought mine with 154k miles, 2009 non a single engine noise, not a missing bolt or plastic all over the car, good maintenance wull keep them alive for years
I really like the new Z car actually. I understand what you’re saying about the turbos, but you’d be hard-pressed to not find a non GDI, non-turbo car these days. Also, we had a couple of the VQ Nissans in the family and while they’re great motors, they have their own set of issues. I do know a couple of people that have put a decent amount of mileage on the 3 L turbo that is in the new Z. It’s been out on the Infiniti for quite some time. I think the redesign is sharp, it mixes the perfect amount of retro with new, and I’m really excited to drive one. I actually think Nissan is on an upswing. For instance, they finally got rid of the awful CVT in the Pathfinder. While it’s not a pathfinder as we know it, still, it is definitely also an improvement over the last generation. I am rooting for Nissan. I’ve had a lot of them and I’m hoping That they get their groove back. Perhaps with Ghosn having been ghosted, we will see some welcome changes.
Scotty, I’m an old man. Purchased a set of brake drums and shoes for the rear brakes on my 2005 Silverado, and installed them myself. The drums were from Detroitaxle. Took me and three mechanics to diagnose the pulsating that I experienced after installing all of that, to not being the front disc brakes being defective, but the new rear drums being defective! You see, I mistakenly diagnosed the pulsating feel I was getting after replacing the rear brakes to being the front brakes! Never dreamed the new drums were the problem! Of course Detroitaxle didn’t want to warrant the drums because I had them on for forty days before realizing they were defective! Which they only give 30 days for free returns apparently! Oh, they offered after I asked to speak with a supervisor, to allow me a replacement or refund if I would pay $113 to ship the defective ones back….I paid $137 for the set! The ones I bought locally ended up costing me $225 for the pair, but they actually work! Just wanted to ask you if you ever tried Detroitaxle parts and what you thought about them? I know you don’t mind calling it like you see it! Thank you sir! I love watching your videos!
336,000 KM on my Forester Turbo XT. Still runs well, burns minimal oil, All engine parts original except plugs, belts and one coil pack and the muffler..
If you are after performance, you would be out of your mind to buy a new Z. Starting at 40k, they are going against some real heavy hitters at that price range. Hell, you don't even get a limited slip diff for $40k lol. I'm not a brand loyalist, so i would take a Mustang over the new Z any day.
Always the same story. A rich oil guy in Calgary had to have the new model BMW R1200RT motorbike. In 2010 he bought it new and added every option. 35K out the door. In 2014 the new model came out and I bought his for 12K Canadian with 60 K km, barely broken in and with every service record from the (expensive) dealer of course. I put 75 K km on it in 4 years and sold it for 7 K. Best bike I ever owned, loved it. Buy a good used vehicle that a rich old guy drove.
I've seen enough of old Scotty to overlook his opinions. This engine is fairly well proven reliable used in other Nissan cars. He's just another Toyota fanboy. Always has been.
I have a 2019 370Z 6MT sport coupe in all black and love it. My car is hitting 53k miles with no problems and virtually no oil consumption. I have used the recommended 5W-30 Nissan ester oil since it was new and gently broke in the engine and used 3k mile oil change intervals. There is no valve clatter on my engine and only a little fuel injector clicking. I spent about $3k on a high performance intake, exhaust and custom Ecutek dyno we estimate that we're getting about 385 peak hp at the crank, very close to the 400hp the new Z makes. I'm at a Nissan dealership waiting on an oil change and in talking with the salesman found out that they can't sell the new Z; all of their prospective buyers have gotten cold feet after seeing the $10k and $20k markups on the performance and sport models. He agreed with me that the dealerships are shooting themselves in their feet with these absurd markups. I told him that if I had that much money to blow on a car I would put it towards a Porsche Cayman S.
I’ve been around these VQ platforms for some time now. I’ve even turbod my 350z nismo. It has been one of the most reliable cars I’ve owned. They do have their flaws like any car but these are super solid vehicles. I said what I said. As far as the new Z with the VR30 engine.. it’s been good as it’s an evolving platform. But Nissan is still making amazing Sports cars. Something that no one does anymore. There’s a reason that the Nissan GT-R always win TX2K every year. But regardless, very informative video.
The 350 and 370 are good cars no one disputes that ... The new Z is not... A gtr does not "win tx2k every year". The gtr motor is a closed deck design that shares virtually Nothing with the new z.
I agree with Scotty and many of the other Z owners. I love mine and I plan on driving it for many many many years to come. The new Z does nothing for me.
That was a good looking Z car. I like the look of the new Z car, but not as much as that older one. Probably very hard to find one in as good a condition as that one.
Scotty, I’m nowhere near your level of expertise and knowledge, although I still have a very good understanding of cars and how they work. I at least know enough when some POS D-Bag is getting ready to rip me off. I can be lazy, but I’ll gladly do the work myself to save hundreds and thousands of dollars and to make sure that everything was properly done and with quality parts. Your channel has really held me out, especially since I’m still taking care of my Mom’s car too. Scotty, you hold a special place in my heart and mind. God bless!
A simple remedy to the high mark ups "regional market adjustments” is to not buy one and let the unit sit there until the next ice age. Eventually, the dealerships will have no other choice except to sell one at a reasonable price.
@@DescartesRenegade you're the uneducated one. You keep your opinions to yourself what are you a Turbocharger salesperson. Everybody knows unless you drive like granny that turbochargers use more fuel. Not to mention they're unreliable and expensive compared to a naturally-aspirated engine
@Descartes, Rene both use more gas. The difference between the two is supercharger takes power to make power and is always running. Turbo takes exhaust gas to get running so it's power kicks in at higher rpm over idol. Turbo is also more efficient because of this but make no mistake both systems still use more fuel and also cost more to run
Had a 2007 Solar Orange 350z and I freaking loved that car. My biggest complaint was the lack of torque. Super interested in the new Nissan Z's with their 400hp TT and tons of torque!
I used to drive nothing but manual transmission cars and trucks in the 90's up until about 10 years ago. I'm older now, and want a sports car with a manual transmission just for fun. In your opinion, what would you choose? Miata's look really fun to drive and are reasonably priced, but I can't fit in a Miata. I tried driving a buddies old early 90's Miata and there's no way in hell that would ever work being 6'3''.
That’s true you don’t want none of these Japanese cars that are owned by kids or young adults they’ll destroy those cars there was this older woman that had a 240sx all original and I asked her multiple times to sell to me but she would always tell me know finally, she gave it to her grandson, and now the car is lowered, has bucket seats in the Pokémon stickers on the window 🤦🏻♂️ smh goodbye 240sx I’ll probably see you in the junkyard soon
That plugged in thing Scotty, looks like an insurance driver monitoring device (speed,braking,acceleration...) so they can raise or lower the insurance 😁
I got the new 400Z Sport and it is by far the best car I've had. Even though it's really just a 370Z with a new power plant and a facelift. I still love the thing. 6 speed manual, lightest weight car I've ever driven, rear wheel drive, two seats, twin turbos... This thing can hang with a scat pack so I'm happy with it.
To be clear, I’m talking about the new 400z being a POS not this 370z

New Z is not a failure, dealers can't get them in sufficient numbers yet, or the ones that do have them have ridiculous markups on them. Give it time, they will sell just fine.
Yes!
They might not be a failure but they are mid. Both 350 & 370 were really well received when they came out
Those ridiculous markups are killing interest.
The failure is that you have to spend $50k MSRP for an LSD, the transmission grinds, and the tires and suspension suck.
These cars in Canada have almost no issues. They can handle a beating.
Few wheel bearing here and there but mostly reliable.
What about the infamous Canadian snow?
They do have a couple of issues: The clutch master cylinder usually fails and needs to be upgraded with an aftermarket version, and the key can fail leaving you unable to start the car. Other than that it's a very impressive car, IMO. It's kinda like the poor man's supercar.
@@MrOiram46 lol they park for winter
@The Mow-ron I haven't seen one yet 🤞🏾. Lol and yes poor man's super car

You got a steal man.
I know a guy in phoenix with a 2014 who paid 21k for it. Weird.
I have a 2006 350z since 2015 it runs great still with 169k miles. I redline it everyday, amazing its never had engine or transmission issues. It really does run like a top.
I thought he was gonna talk bad about the 370z but nope 😂 I’m glad he likes it makes me not regret buying one
Those older -Z- are still bullet proof but they're still pricey.
The 240Z’s rusted like a ‘55 Ford. Ask me how I know.
Pricey? I think you're poor.

When i was looking for a 370 the hardest thing was finding one that wasn’t wrecked

And he'll be mad as hell!!

I've got a 2006 G35 6MT coupe with 135K miles on it that still runs great!! I bought it new and I don't plan on EVER getting rid of it!
Scotty! I recently aquired an 87 300ZX from an older gentleman. 85,600 miles on it now. Z’s are truly drivers cars. My favorites
I had one for a very long time. Absolutely loved it and it’s the one vehicle I regret selling.
I'd suggest kilmat, a cheaper version of sound deadener. Also fill voids between the wheel wells and interior panels with cloth insulation where you can. It goes a long way to quieting things down.
I had a 350z that I sold years ago. Still regret that decision. They're really such nice cars especially for the money
BTW the 350 had a short in the harness he found a week later. .
My 280Z; my first ever brand new car was the worst if the lot.
Most cars released in or around 1987 were slugs by modern standards. They were decently quick for the time.
Never driven a 370 but the 350z I drove was still pretty slow. Hardly felt any faster than my e46 330xi

I have a 2018 and love it. They are a lot of fun and bullet proof if you don't over-mod or abuse them.
I also own a 370Z with 100k miles and I was that young enthusiastic driver, and so far no major issues besides brakes pads.
Finally the Z gets the recognition it deserves from Scotty 😂
Still love mine even if I do only drive it once a week, these cars can beat on your back!
This new 400z I've seen 2 out here on the road and I'm a truck driver....obviously not selling well
My neighbour a woman in her late 50’s used to take her 350Z to the drag strip every weekend so you never ever know how any car gets treated. This is why I hate buying used!
I had a 370Z for a few years. I’ve noticed the motor is pretty noisy. So is the clutch too. I thought I had a knock but after doing researching and asking other owners, it’s “normal” lol
It was a fantastic and fun car.
Ah I had to replace one too in my genesis coupe , some work.
If they sold it without markup, I know people who’d buy it
I agree, I’ll be looking for one of these or a MT Supra as soon as I pay off another car in 2 years.

I had the older 280Z and it was truly a fun car to drive. Wish I could buy one today but they are pricey if you find a good one
I had one too. Man, I miss my Z, would love to get one. But like you said the old ones are expensive as hell

True, I want one, but the dealerships are marking up the price up to 90k+
Well, 400hp from any twin turbo car is honestly quite embarrassing.

Their designs on infinity are horrible. Just horrendous.
Thank you Scotty for being you!
I never put drums/discs on without putting them on the lathe first.

My 2007 G35 is still going strong with over 200,000 miles. Made in Japan as the Nissan Skyline & rebadged as Infiniti for the USA.
370z came with a viscous lsd since like 2013 lol, why wouldnt they put it on the new one

I've had my 2004 350Z for over 8 years. A few months ago, I finally had to replace the original clutch. Still a great driving car...
The new Z should have a non-turbo base model for maybe $30k... a direct competitor for the BRZ/GR86
GTR should have a manual/2WD base model GTS version.

These are cool cars. Definitely the only Nissan I’d ever buy.

A simple remedy to the high mark ups "regional market adjustments” is to not buy one and let the unit sit there until the next ice age. Eventually, the dealerships will have no other choice except to sell one at a reasonable price.
In my opinion the only reason why they even put turbochargers on vehicles nowadays is just so they can turbocharge the money out of your pocket

@Descartes, Rene both use more gas. The difference between the two is supercharger takes power to make power and is always running. I still love the thing. 6 speed manual, lightest weight car I've ever driven, rear wheel drive, two seats, twin turbos... This thing can hang with a scat pack so I'm happy with it.
