So glad at 6:48 you mentioned that FA can not turn into glucose. One of my bugbears that many get this wrong. Krebs & radiocarbon labelled C14 sorted that out years ago. Loving your channel. This was me in the early 90s. Shame the interweb wasn't around then! 😀

I can't see the Glut4 reseptor that closes the door for carbs and fat when the osmotic bloodglucose pressure gets high. This is reversed when the blood glucose goes down. After water fasting for 3 days, you alleviate this mechanism, and the Glut 4 is pushed out from the membran and are open until the blood pressure gets high again. This feature is to protect the cells. Remember when the Randal cycle is activated the Glut 4 reject both karbohydrats and fat. So, you're not oxidizing fat while this is activated. Nice video, like the energy.

Its wrong to consider fuel sources as "preferred". Evolution has directed the sequence of fuel source selection based on damage control. Glucose is used early because if not used for energy it will non-enzymatically glycate cells - damaging and killing them. Cells constrict the GLUT4 receptor when replete with fuel based on current energy demand levels. If there is an excess of damaging glucose, evolutions design selection is for that glucose to be left in the serum as glycation damage to blood cells is mitigated by their rapid turnover. If high levels are maintained, glucose damage expands in magnitude and location.
Benign fuel sources are utilized after glucose BECAUSE they are benign.
Gluconeogenesis creates all the energy needed precisely when it is needed so there is no excess to cause damage via glycation.
If you didn't eat a single carb and only ate fat and protein you would have all the energy required as and when needed without glycation.

What a nice way of explaining things! Well, I like it mostly because it is over simplified (no Organic Chemistry anywhere) BUT that is precisely great about these videos. Not everyone (or rather almost no one) needs to memorise all those chemical reactions! What most of us need to know is how what we eat affects us and when or why (triggers) - the logical connections and not the chemical reactions!! Wonderful presentation too. Thanks a lot.

Can you do another video where you explain what happens when insulin levels are high and glucose is low? I have an insulinoma. A tumor that makes insulin. Enough insulin for 20 people. So my deal is that my insulin is high and glucose goes low. I want to know how the presence of high insulin changes things. I know it stops ketones production as well as gluconeogenesis of glycogen stores. So that all that is left is muscle tissue to be used to make glucose.

Ketones are NOT turned into glucose in the brain (min 8:20). Ketones be oxidized in brain to provide ATP energy and lessen glucose consumption under fasting (actually starvation) conditions. Fatty acids (and ketones) can NOT be converted to glucose. The substrates for gluconeogenesis are lactate, glycerol and amino acids.

It can be both. Hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Diabetes is in effect a disregulation of metabolism, glucose metabolism in particular. Glucose can have a deletrious effect on cells if not controlled.
