  • Nigel talks about one of his favourite hymns, 'Abide With Me', written by Henry Lyte.
    Apologies for the errors on the dates - the ones with regards to Henry Lyte should, of course, be 19th century rather than 20th!
    The full lyrics of the hymn:
    Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
    the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
    When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
    Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
    Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
    earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away.
    Change and decay in all around I see.
    O thou who changest not, abide with me.
    I need thy presence every passing hour.
    What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
    Who like thyself my guide and strength can be?
    Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
    I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless,
    ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
    Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
    I triumph still, if thou abide with me.
    Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes.
    Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
    Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee;
    in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
    Henry F. Lyte, 1847

    Abide with me always reminds me of death, funerals bidding farewell to a loved one. Of hope, of solace in the lord.

    I have song it in church, performed it on stage, and pray it every night. It is the song of my soul and I thank God for inspiring the writer to compose it.

    You mention a few times that the events occurred in the 1900s but you are off by a hundred years as Henry Francis Lyte died in 1847. Thanks for posting the video, the hymn is now my very favorite!

    Interesting, lovely video. Thank you so much. Just a couple of small errors; clearly you meant 1815 to 1818, not 1915 to 1918 for Lyte’s time in County Wexford - and 1847 rather than 1947 for the year he died at 54. (Easy to misspeak; you had just been relating other 20th century dates.) Then, all is perfect. Thanks again.

    There was an episode of "Arena" about Abide With Me - called something like "the story of an English hymn". I've been looking for it, off and on, for a very long time; it's not in the collected lists of editions of Arena that enthusiasts have compiled. If anyone has it, please post it ...

    I told a fellow worker that due to political correctness that "Abide with Me" was going to be omitted from the cup final" he went nuts.

    我需要主,時刻在我身邊,除祢恩典,怎能與魔作戰?
    誰能像祢,時常引導扶助,或陰或晴,求祢與我同住。
    有祢賜福,我不怕敵和恶;病而不苦,流淚也不痛苦;
    死亡毒鉤!撒但攻擊引誘,我都勝過,若祢與我同住。
