    1. Abide with me! fast falls the eventide;
    The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide!
    When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
    Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.
    2. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
    Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
    Change and decay in all around I see;
    O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
    3. Come not in terrors, as the King of kings;
    But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings:
    Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea;
    Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.
    4. I need Thy presence every passing hour:
    What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
    Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
    Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me.
    5. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless:
    Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness:
    Where is death’s sting? where, grave, thy victory?
    I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

    Thank you Luke. Such powerful words of comfort knowing that The LORD abides with us no matter what comes our way... in life and in death.

    This is a song that I often get my hymnbook out and sing when I am having problems or feeling distressed. It is to me like a prayer to God for help and strength!

    Mr. Powell, your performance (and arrangement?) of the last verse was particularly moving. Thank you. This hymn differs in my estimation from the vast majority of hymn in that the lyrics are as special as the tune. For most hymns, their lyrics are of little consequence as I am moved by the music above all else. That, I think, points to a flaw in my brain wiring.
    A special request: Please consider featuring "All creatures of our God and King" (Lasst uns erfreuen, Ralph Vaughn Williams arrangement). And, no, I have not troubled to check your catalog. But there is a special reason for this request, one that you seem very qualified perform. One of my choral directors changed the verse "And Thou most kind and gentle death ..." to its related minor key, say from E flat major to E flat minor. I find this variant very moving for this particular verse. Pray consider playing this variant, which I have never found in any search of the internet, even if you have already included this hymn in your inspiring Friday series.
    Thank you again for lifting my spirits.
