@@niallcorcoran4437 Well then you'd be wrong. The Mk 7 Golf R is boring in truth, front biased all wheel drive, 2 litre 4 cylinder engine that sounds mediocre. It's fast, but in a way that elicits little excitement. The BMW on the other hand is more unique for hot hatchbacks. Firstly it has a rev happy three litre straight six driving the rear wheels as standard, and an Xdrive option with rear biased four wheel drive. In other words, it'll slide about unlike the Golf with a purity of balance the Golf does not possess. Both manual and a superb (ZF8) auto slush box auto are available. It has more power stock than a mk7 Golf R (322bhp for the facelift versus 306 for the facelift R), more torque (332lb/ft plays 280) and still very tuneable. 400 horsepower was easy. In 2016 the N55 engine was replaced by the same configuration B58, which had even more power (335bhp with 369lb/ft) and was even more tunable and stronger, having a closed deck. This was dubbed the M140i. A remap equivalent of about $750 with no hardware changes on an M140i is approx 415 horsepower. With minor bolt ons costing perhaps $2000 it is 450 horsepower.
i love Jeremy's face when he span off, like most people would be shitting themselves losing controls in the rain at 120 mph, and going from concrete to grass to concrete to grass... but clarkson just kind of accepts it and sits there very calm, its funny
It's also smarter to let off the steering wheel/brakes etc at that point the cars going to stop but if you keep fiddling with it you can make the spinout worse or even cause it too flip
Honestly one of the best reviews on top gear. Showed perfectly how the bmw is a lot of fun to drive and is very fast but how the VW wins on practicality and as an everyday car while still having pretty solid preformance 2 great cars
I drive an m135i. In wet if you turn off traction control your going to die real quick. The acceleration is brutally quick and wheels spin in 4th gear.
Move out The way With shitty tires everything is possible. For example I had old winter tires in summer on type r Civic and it spun the wheels in 3rd gear without clutch kicking, like I couldn't accelerate at all :D
And that's why you buy the xDrive version. Drove the M140i xDrive on an icetrack here in Finland and i've never had as much fun in a car. Ever. And i probably never will.
This head-to-head track test reveals exactly why Clarkson (along with his crew behind the camera) are so good at making a car review entertaining. He could just tell us that the Beamer has less space in the boot and barely any leg room in the back seat, but he doesn't. Instead, he spends more than a minute (4:38 - 5:54) messing about with a nuclear warhead and sawing a leg off of a mannequin. Sometimes he staggers even himself with his genius.
Since nobody really answered it - Jeremy is a big fan of hammers, with the implication that a hammer can solve anything. It's a running joke on Top Gear. He's holding up a saw and pretending it's a hammer as a sight gag, or basically a visual joke.
I love how when Jeremy loses control and slips off the road he is so calm 😂😂like.. Just watch his face.. He's just like "oh great. Hey look at the grass. LA LA LA just crashing again.. Oh there goes the bumper.. That's fine.. I have insurance"
Khaled Hossam 90% of what topgear does is staged. This particular situation goes against my understanding of physics, if someone starts spinning on 120mph, the result is likely to be much worse.
I agree. The X-Drive M135i and Golf R in these awful conditions would have made for a brilliant comparison. I'm a big fan of the M135i. I've been a passenger and driven one in Germany. The engine is simply majestic. The best way I can describe it that it's like a high-performance Diesel and a naturally aspirated, six cylinder petrol engine all in one. Anyone who owns one, will understand what I'm saying. Put a BMW LSD there and you've got a baby M car. Great car.
I like how Clarkson just ''oooh the BMW is so good, so fast, best care ever'', then aften he lost control of the car, ''naa I´m changing to Volkswagen golf''. XD
I dont think it was necessarily faked, but it wasnt realistic either. Uncambered runway with mases of standing water and lots more rain falling. BMW forums have also suggested the car was probably on runflats, and they're crap.
@@dallasmellsop5488 in what was was it fake, he was going totally straight and then the car just took a hard left... it’s an auto so you can’t clutch kick it and it has an electric handbrake so you can’t just yank it, he didn’t turn the wheel in any direction and you can hear he didn’t add any extra throttle as he was already flat out. You can see how wet it was an I’m sure that runway has a ton of bumps from constant use.. like there’s almost no way they faked that...
This idiot Clarkson put it in Sport Plus, and shifted manually! I did 245km/h in a 120i M-Technik with the ZF 8-speed. No problem. Every corner on the Autobahn could be done flatout, traffic taken out of the equation
As a 35i driver I can say it’s single handedly the best car I’ve ever drove it’s an unbelievable amount of fun it’s impractical yes but the gti would not give the sense of enjoyment this absolute beast gives me I wouldn’t change it for the world
Exactly theyre just smile machines, I have the 3 door and although the rear seats are utterly pointless the car is so charming that it doesn't even matter

Summer Doge Well that's a stupid reason, it's an amazing car and it's not a good reason not to review it... It could have been the conclusion. Especially when we know they had the car.
***** yes but you can't compare the cars in totally different price range, it would have been pretty silly to do that, they said AMG was better than the two in every aspect but they wouldn't give such money for a hatchback ...when they said that this video begins...
I went from this very GTI with the performance pack to the LCI M135i. 2 different beasts. The golf always felt safe and planted, very difficult to unsettle it when gunning, and it felt plenty fast enough. The m135i however is significantly faster, a totally different beast. It has so much power going through the rear wheels you can get a little squigly in a straight line. It's far more exciting and an astronomical degree more involved to drive; not for the faint hearted. If you want a drivers car with more power than you'll ever need for a public road - m135i (old 6 pot, not so much modern 4 pot). If you want a safe A to Ber with reasonable fuel economy that's also quick - golf all day.
@@sib1272 Rather have an RS3, faster than a m135i and also a lot safer. I'd rather have fun from performance rather than have a car that's "fun" because it's unstable. There are plenty of RWD cars anyway with better performance and won't try to kill you the moment you push it a little.
The 135 is the better car to me. Amazing fun, and it keeps you on high alert all the time. I drive a 335i right now and its the same thing. What an amazing toys
Fair play to Jeremy for keeping his cool so well while going sideways at over 100MPH. I would probably have dropped a load in my jocks if I'll be honest, lol. Definitely not his first rodeo, that's for sure.
The Clio V6 is very very good (driven one) but the one thing it's bad at is storing stuff in the rear, which is what hatchbacks are supposed to be good at, also it doesn't have rear seats... Because they put the engine there. 130i M sport is also very very good simply because it is a FR RWD (Front mounted engine, Rear Wheel Drive), but it's more of a 5-door compact-wagon'ish in size, looks and function. Yes there is the BMW M140i PE and it is a hot hatch but 1) Only a handful of the M140i PE's were ever made, very few people (60, to my recollect) ever get to own one (and thats assuming none of them have been crashed/scrapped so far), and 2) Too pricey. The (affordable) RWD hot hatchback Jeremy is referring to is the 1988-1994 Nissan 200SX (I've driven a tuned example and yes it was bonkers) and even with inflation considered it was way cheaper than any of the aforementioned modern equivalent alternatives, it's way lighter, way less power (when stock, not so much when you remove a bling and adjust a blong) so it's cheaper to insure. And it's a cult car with a massive following which the NPC-like (again, fast AF, but thats all they got) BMW and Golf wont have, and while yes, the Clio V6 is legendary, look at the prices, it's what we call unattainable (25k for an almost decently good one) so these cars (minus the Clio) will be... forgotten. Excluding the Clio V6, bring one of these new BMW's or Golf's to a car meet and everyone goes -.- Bring a Golf R32, or Nissan 200SX or Golf MK.I Rabbit or MK.2 Synchro (w/16v swap) or BMW 1602/1802/2002 or Clio V6 (yes I said we'd exclude it but you'd defend it to the death anyway so I might as well give an inch now than a mile later) to a car meet and everyone does that whole gushing rainbow meme thing.
ToreDL87 I don’t know how you can call the bmw not a hatch. The rear door is a hatch so it has a hatch on the back. Therefore it’s a hatch back. Also you can pick them up for around £5k which is very affordable indeed
He said hatchback and Clio V6 is closer to classic sports car as it is mid engine with only 2 seats, while BMW 1 is an ordinary car that you can use for everyday life. And only like 3000 of Clio V6 were made, which makes them less affordable even than Alpine lol
@@lbnewell23 Not a hatch because the sheer size of that car dictates otherwise, just look at that thing, I revise my statement from calling it a wagon to calling it a SUV, too heavy, too long and too wide, and dare I say, too powerful, completely useless around the bends & corners on narrow roads, it has a hatch in the back but it's not a hot hatchback, they're meant to be zippy and toss-able and revving in the corners, not boating around the bends PRAYING to the gods there wont be oncoming traffic! The 140i PE fits the bill size-wise, but too few were ever made and commands prices more than 5k, and there's the weight to take into consideration, and way too much engine. The Clio is really good,(if not a bit too little contact with the front wheels, especially at higher speeds, not that I ever broke the speed limit with it ehrm ehrm ehrm ehrm) but too few were ever made, and that rear mounted engine makes it useless for exactly what it's meant to do, they should have gone F/R with it, and the price.. In terms of how quick it picked up value as a cult car, after it went out of production, it beats even the JZA80 Supra, again, great car, IMO it should be a government mandate that EVERYONE have one at least once in their life, I can't praise it enough, BUT, it doesnt fullfill it's supposed role, it looks like a hot hatchback but you cant toss stuff in the rear boot (because it doesnt have one) and go for a spirited drive. Again, Golf R32, Nissan 200SX, Golf MK.1/2 are absolute UNITS. Heck, I own one and don't like bragging about my sh*t, so wasn't going to say it, but what about the 3dr "AE86" Toyota Corolla GT 1983-1987? over 350000 were made and enough are left that the average person can get one, it's got the 200SX beat by how many knows about it, it's RWD, has Limited Slip 1.6 Twin Cam so not enough to get killed but enough to have fun.. and the intake SOUND!! And in terms of aftermarket parts support/community/helpfulness etc over all, the BMW community is put entirely to SHAME (and I own a BMW and I know how to google parts, go to forums, find dedicated facebook groups etc), heck it wasnt until recently someone (RacingDiffs) came up with a Limited Slip for the regular 188mm E46 diffs, and I can't praise them enough, but why did BMW not offer Limited Slip diff for the regular E46??? WHY??? Arguably the most easily attainable late 90's/early 2000's RWD chassis today and they botched it up! Meanwhile, the "crappy" Corolla & 200SX has always had like pff 10 different brands that offers fully adjustable Limited Slip diffs to choose from, and thats assuming you manage to blow up the diff it has (which is easily rebuildable), and that's before we get into engines, transmissions (there are 3 different companies that offers dogbox racing transmissions, 4 different companies that offers custom transmission gear sets) and final gears, not to mention the rear axle swap kits that are available. Most hot hatchbacks ever made were absolute legends and units in their time, heck, new types of motorsports and new types of classes in motorsports were created with them, everyone could get one when they were made, they are collectable as heck, and still completely attainable for the average person, without getting into debt, given motivation and application of simple economics by laying off useless subscriptions, stop adding to your flat cap collection+changing flatphone every second and stuff like that.
For a FWD car that's very little understeer indeed. I drive one of these too and from experience it really does take a hell of a lot of speed round s tight bend to feel any.
@@lbnewell23 granted. But you could say the same about VW/Audi having no snap oversteer on normal road conditions. On a track it's fine, but anywhere else, most inadequate drivers will be in for a surprise .....

DSC switched off while doing a high speed run on an extremely wet track. There's a word for that. Nice try, Jezza and Top Gear. Thank you Elbert for pointing out. Its worthwhile repeating.

The BMW tried to kill Jeremy... and for that alone it wins! :-D Seriously though, anybody who drives a BMW knows not to switch the DSC off in the wet, or that can happen! Silly, silly man.
+Strider Sky So how is the VW a better car if the BMW outperforms it in everything and by a large margin on the "fun" aspect? The GTI is a torque- and understeering little hatch 18 year olds drive, the BMW is a weapon.
Strider Sky The 1 series might have a little less space, but that doesn't mean it's not practical. The M135i is based on a regular 1-series which is a hatchback after all. And I bet you with the adaptive suspension it's more comfortable to drive than the Golf. It's a poor man hot hatch? Haha, you make no sense. What's a rich man hot hatch then, a Ferrari FF? If you want a fun car that is most certainly practical in every day life, there is nothing wrong about the M135i. If you want a understeering, slow Golf that pollutes like a train and is powered by a toy engine, go ahead and get the Golf, which is truly the poor mans hot hatch in this comparison.
+Strider Sky I'd have the 135i definitely. it looks more mature and the shape is unique imo. the sound of the 3 litre.. the extra poke... the obvious build quality...
+Strider Sky in any kind of case for that money I want a premium brand bmw interior is way better , fun is present plus every woman would prefer the bmw by brand rather than a vw. Bmw looks are way better outside than vw , the vw dal on the outside and feels like a normal hatchback nothing special really distinguishable and on the inside bmw are still better not that vw has bad interior but yeah .
Because his tires were spinning so quick they had no more grip on the road and the car started 'floating' over the water. And then your car starts spinning and you have absolutely no control left, you could see it as ice skating.
It seemed like the BMW entered aquaplaning conditions earlier than the VW. Most likely because it was simply traveling faster, but there could also be other factors in play. It could also be that the BMW just happened to hit a puddle that the VW didn't. Maybe the BMW simply had inferior tyres with less water-clearing capability. Maybe the BMW had tyres with wider contact patch, making it more susceptible to aquaplaning. The crux of the matter is that the BMW was traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions and the amount of water on the runway, ended up aquaplaning and with no control, while the VW did not.
@@Beatty36901 I wouldn't wanna revert back, but I don't see how that is relevant to the point. Just because a number of regions are united under the dominance of one region, doesn't mean that all the other regions become part of that dominant region. Bavaria isn't part of Prussia, Scotland isn't part of England. Most often, a higher political entity is formed, in these cases Germany and the UK.
You know what? That small Bimmer is the ultimate Q-Car! Being that small, no one's gonna notice just how much power is hidden in it, let alone it's rear-driven! I don't care about the VW's practicality prowess, the VW's just a little bit more spacious, that's all! The 1er has some 2.1 extra inches of wheelbase, so it's almost as roomy! I also don't care about the VW's ease of insurance! I just want that rear-drive Straight-Six and stand out of the croud, whilst drifting in a Straight-6 soundcloud! Besides, the 1er's the only car to match with the old rear-driven hot hatches!
I love how he spun the BMW doing 120 in a straight line, but when he overtook the GTI he was going 125+ and maneuvered around the GTI at the same time didn't spin then. proof @1:56
Totally agree. I test drove the manual and the DSG. The salesman of the DSG model said it's the best of both worlds, but I hated it. There was no feeling, no involvement. Like drinking alcohol free Scotch that tastes like water.
I haven't looked at anything from this show in a while. I also suffered two car accidents which caused me a lot of memory loss so this is also like watching it again for the first time for me. God everything was so beautiful during the production of this show. The lighting, the soundtrack, the commentary, the presenters. It's the same men we know on GrandTour but, it's just... different. They seem to focus more on the comedy, not the art. I feel like these men had a huge impact on the way auto manufacturers started to look at their cars, I think their opinions alone might be why we have some of the options we do now. Something about this made me feel a feeling I haven't felt in a long time, and it felt good, it made me feel alive. Now I'm just left with the comedown emptiness of my life and the friends I had during this time in the shows production, they are gone or dead now. I guess life is about experiencing things, emotions, the sensation of living and it's ups and downs. My cars are the only thing that's kept me sane through the madness in this world. God's speed James, Jeremy, Hammond, thank you for reminding me why I was put on this earth.
Here in the UK if you are known for being useless at DIY as Clarkson is, you deliberately refer to your tools by the wrong names , hope this clears up the confusion.
I've read the comments on the reason why the BMW lost control, and I perfectly agree the primary reason is the Sport+ mode being selected, which deactivates the DSC (better known on other cars as ESP). Driving a such car under such weather conditions with the ESP turned off is somewhat insane, I agree. BUT. Question for the BMW drivers up there: can anybody explain me, in simple words, how you can get the "Sport+" to display, without the "DSC OFF" light showing? As far as I know, it's just not possible, it clearly shows for instance at 1:35. For some reason it does _not_ show at 3:15, just before Clarkson loses control. This leads me to believe that this video was edited on purpose, and it's an idea I'm not comfortable with.
I found another evidence of the manipulation. At 0:56, the BMW dashboard clearly shows the DSC off warning light is on. It also shows the time: 12:59pm and the odometer: 041.0. Now let's fast forward to 3:15, moments before the loss of control: same speed, same time, and odometer is still at exactly 041.0 (and it changes every 1/10th mile, ie every 160m). There is necessarily less than a second between the two sequences (0:56 - 3:15). How weird, on the second sequence, the DSC off warning light has just... vanished :D.
Great video. I just kicked up a new mk7 gti and I LOVE it. I went from a supercharged MOPAR to the gti and I have zero regrets. It's nowhere near as fast as my charger was, but it's pure driving fun. I smile every time the turbo kicks in. My insurance was cut by 2/3 as well! VW did an amazing job with the 7th gen gti. I'm excited to see what's in their future!
The M135, 140 and 2 series equivalents are genuinely scary in the wet. I could feel mine getting quite twitchy in the rain, in a straight line on the motorway recently. It's widely known that they're very unpredictable in bad weather.
LOL. Yup, me too. I found a near new 2011 with m-Power and the luxury interior. Jeremy convinced me. (I will remember NOT to disable traction control on slippery roads). I also drove one with M-Plus - NOT the same car at all.
Coming back to this video now, Golfs are like the benchmark for performance hatch for many people but that Beamer could be one amazing "Sleeper" and with RWD it's just awesome. No one would know, it looked so unassuming. Just my opinion.
I like how fast Jeremy Clarcson can change is mind about things. And the things he do, he do it with so much humor when he bashes something. I love that guy!
+lalala kieran Friend of mine bought one, too. It had 46,000 miles on it and the valve chain jumped. And another one owns a MK6 somethingsomething TDI with 50,000 miles and it's on the third turbocharger and second valve chain. Honestly, I'm healed from Volkswagen.
Bobby Goertz Yes, that's what I mean. Sorry for not knowing every technological term in a foreign language. And I'm not "dissing", I'm just laying out the facts I've been giving about these two cars of the MK6 Golf generation.
Any car could aquaplane like that in very wet conditions, more rare for front wheel drive cars because there's better traction while those wheels are driven. Once it happens it's like you are on ice.
The difference between Golf GTI and BMW M135? The GTI driver was always a guy who loves sporty cars, but who remains as well a responsible family man with his wife and children, and who puts a lot of emphasis on having the best value for his money. The BMW driver, on the other hand, is very often what the Germans call a "Herrenfahrer" ("Gentleman driver," [literally "Master driver"] which in German is not a compliment). In fact, according to official statistics, BMW drivers are the most reckless drivers in Germany !
Hmmmm might not want to be doing 120mph in a M135i in the wet in Sports+ mode which turns off or dampens the traction control. Not exactly a fair test esp when the GTI is front wheel drive too and less powerful. Lesson here, if you are gonna have a rear wheel driver respect it in the wet, slow down and keep it in comfort mode.
I love RWD cars they rule but I can tell you from experience they are far less safe in the wet. I hear a lot of RWD fan boys try tell me otherwise but experience and stats as a backup tell me otherwise.
One of the most seen cars on the road in the UK and few say x drive on the back so not me who is suggesting anything. BMW makes RWD cars mainly so its the market.
Golf gti $34000, bmw 135i $58000, I pay $2800 year, I got quote from insurance, and bmw 135i is $4200 a year, you guys are getting ripped off. Canadian dollar btw.
@@mkefayati473 in Germany, the GTI has one of the most expensive insurances because there were hell a lot of accidents with it because it was usually the a car which was driven by young unexpierienced drivers and for them it was way too fast to handle.
MAN THAT WAS PERFECT SPIN CONTROL IN THE BMW HE TURNED THE WHEEL 90 DEGREES *INTO THE SLIDE* AND DIDN'T LET IT SPIN AROUND IN HIS HANDS! WELL DONE CLARKSON!!!
He turned AGAINST the slide, the car was sliding left he turned the wheel right, which is what anyone else would do. If your car is heading left into a ditch you would instinctively turn in the opposite direction to avoid it. No praise due, just a regular reaction.
***** Top Gear is for people who can intelligently decide between comedy and realism. Motor Trend is for those who can't discern such differences. Which, obviously, you can't.
Anyone noticed, M135i‘s Traction Control ist DISABLED when it began to slide?? Seems like Top Gear cut the video not quite correctly. When you see the 120mph on the dash there is no yellow traction LED in the middle. In the next scene, right before Jeremy begins to slide, you can see the yellow light in the middle of his dash. Without ESP/Traction enabled, every car would slide this easy at 120mph in the rain! So its kind of unfair for the BMW!
Taking the right tires for the bmw avoid aquaplaning and brings fun to drive the rear weel drive. Driving the front weel drive GTI makes granny's feels happy.
@Ian Stevenson neither does the M140i. He drove in pissed wet conditions with the DSC off, aquaplaned and then blamed the car. Pretty sure loads of people haven't crashed. And why bother? I'd rather keep the M140i with the 340 bhp, RWD and better engine to begin with.
@Ian Stevenson I'm not saying there is. It's down to the individual. The guy was unsure which one he was after, I told him my opinion. Granted I could've said 'in my opinion Golf's are boring' rather than just 'Golf's are boring'. I explained the reasons why I think the M140i is better. In the UK we don't get the Xdrive version of it, which would put some people off as it rains here a lot and RWD requires more caution. Yet they sell the Xdrive version in Europe? Go figure that one lol.
what happened there with the BMW at 120 MPH was "aqua-planing" or "Hydro-planing". It needed proper grippy tires - with deeper grooves (winter tires) to drive that fast in such heavy rains. I was driving 170-180 KMH on twisty German highway, in heavy rains with full grip.

This head-to-head track test reveals exactly why Clarkson (along with his crew behind the camera) are so good at making a car review entertaining. He could just tell us that the Beamer has less space in the boot and barely any leg room in the back seat, but he doesn't.

Clio V6: Am I a joke to you?
Also is the 2006 bmw 130i M sport not RWD too
The Clio V6 is very very good (driven one) but the one thing it's bad at is storing stuff in the rear, which is what hatchbacks are supposed to be good at, also it doesn't have rear seats...
And it's a cult car with a massive following which the NPC-like (again, fast AF, but thats all they got) BMW and Golf wont have, and while yes, the Clio V6 is legendary, look at the prices, it's what we call unattainable (25k for an almost decently good one) so these cars (minus the Clio) will be... forgotten.
Excluding the Clio V6, bring one of these new BMW's or Golf's to a car meet and everyone goes -.-
Bring a Golf R32, or Nissan 200SX or Golf MK.I Rabbit or MK.2 Synchro (w/16v swap) or BMW 1602/1802/2002 or Clio V6 (yes I said we'd exclude it but you'd defend it to the death anyway so I might as well give an inch now than a mile later) to a car meet and everyone does that whole gushing rainbow meme thing.

Can someone tell me why that happened? He was going straight? How dose the car spin out going straight? Did he yank the steering wheel slightly?
Because his tires were spinning so quick they had no more grip on the road and the car started 'floating' over the water. And then your car starts spinning and you have absolutely no control left, you could see it as ice skating.
Oh so it was aquaplaning pretty much? Maybe if he had some thicker, wider tyres that wouldn't have happened? Or was it just because of RWD?
What happened is called Aquaplaning
Lewis Jones I think wider tyres just make aquaplaning worse...
To call a BMW 'Prussian' is the equivalent of calling someone from Aberdeen 'English'
Would you prefer to revert back to the 300 states or remain united under Prussia?
@@Beatty36901 I wouldn't wanna revert back, but I don't see how that is relevant to the point. Just because a number of regions are united under the dominance of one region, doesn't mean that all the other regions become part of that dominant region.
You loved TG so much you emulated Richard Hammond twice!

Damn mate, that’s hard. Having one is bad enough, but two? I can’t even imagine. Hope you’re doing better now

But did at 5:30 did he say sawing their legs off with a *HAMMER?*
In the UK we call a, I think in the US it’s known as a “saw”, here it’s called a hammer! :)
@@GangsterDolphins then what's a wooden dowel with weighted metal head that's used for driving in nails called? Sounds like Clarkson had a brain fart
Here in the UK if you are known for being useless at DIY as Clarkson is, you deliberately refer to your tools by the wrong names , hope this clears up the confusion.

youcef319 yeah that wouldn’t have gone over well with their insurance company if he took out the camera crew in a rented vehicle
This leads me to believe that this video was edited on purpose, and it's an idea I'm not comfortable with.
topgear is scripted/acted. Always been.
jpb1263 They just blacked it out, definitely an ad for VW
I found another evidence of the manipulation. At 0:56, the BMW dashboard clearly shows the DSC off warning light is on. It also shows the time: 12:59pm and the odometer: 041.0. Now let's fast forward to 3:15, moments before the loss of control: same speed, same time, and odometer is still at exactly 041.0 (and it changes every 1/10th mile, ie every 160m). There is necessarily less than a second between the two sequences (0:56 - 3:15).
How weird, on the second sequence, the DSC off warning light has just... vanished :D.
at 3:17.. the light is still on.. they just put a fake speedometer thing before that.
They are different speedo's. One has an M3 and the one at 3.15 has M5...
I did the same with my m135i
210 km on the highway with 5 lanes thankgod…
Turning 360 degrees spinning as soon i went 210 … sold the car immediately….
3:17 he loved that that looks so fun
"by sawing their legs off with a hammer"
Great video. I just kicked up a new mk7 gti and I LOVE it. I went from a supercharged MOPAR to the gti and I have zero regrets. It's nowhere near as fast as my charger was, but it's pure driving fun. I smile every time the turbo kicks in. My insurance was cut by 2/3 as well! VW did an amazing job with the 7th gen gti. I'm excited to see what's in their future!
GTi, the ticking time bomb of the automotive ticking time bomb (timing chain tensioner, intake manifold, fuel pump, control rings, balance shafts, DSG flywheel, intake variable camshaft, oil screens, oil pump).
Thats all cars (just same or different car components) / things break down / if your are scared of car maintenance.
Get a bicycle or a scooter.
5:27 "saw their legs of with a hammer" 😂😂😂😂
M135i the ultimate driving machine as long as you have ESP on in the rain 😂
Good times back than when the 135i had a straight 6 like it has to be in a performance bmw 👌🏻
I own an m135i, theyre utterly phenomenal. The power and road holding is just mind-boggling
What miles you got on her
The M135, 140 and 2 series equivalents are genuinely scary in the wet. I could feel mine getting quite twitchy in the rain, in a straight line on the motorway recently. It's widely known that they're very unpredictable in bad weather.
What width and type of tyres was yours on out of interest?
i watched this and then bought the bmw.
Do you like the car so far?
Do they sale the BMW in the states ?
I really hope you are a woman
LOL. Yup, me too. I found a near new 2011 with m-Power and the luxury interior. Jeremy convinced me. (I will remember NOT to disable traction control on slippery roads). I also drove one with M-Plus - NOT the same car at all.
Why didn't you buy a real BMW and not a little silly one?
Coming back to this video now, Golfs are like the benchmark for performance hatch for many people but that Beamer could be one amazing "Sleeper" and with RWD it's just awesome. No one would know, it looked so unassuming. Just my opinion.
5:21 Roni size - brown paper bag absolute tune
5:27 sawing their legs off with a hammer. A hammer you say? hmm ...
It's a running gag in Top Gear that the only tool Clarkson ever uses is a hammer.
Therefore, if he's using a tool, it's a hammer. No arguments.
HerraTohtori and really calling them tools is kind of generous because in his hands any "hammer" if more of a WMD.
I just noticed, lmfao. Clarkson you witty little shit.
man.. finally i have found a car that can fit all my nuclear warheads in the back
yup they will sell very will in iran
Here just to watch the Warhead transport part. Best comparison IN THE WORLD.
This is the best comparison.... PAUSE.... in the world.
I like how fast Jeremy Clarcson can change is mind about things. And the things he do, he do it with so much humor when he bashes something. I love that guy!
Yes, especially thanks to the VW paid ad. ;)
I just got a mkVI GTI and am loving it. Wouldn't want anything faster. As an every day driver, it's the tits
+BrakeHorsePower92 Valve chain? You mean timing chain? If you're going to diss something, make sure you're at least educated in the slightest way.
+BrakeHorsePower92 THat seems a little false or the driver is just shitty.
+Bobby Goertz never heard of an valve chain before :D
Bobby Goertz
Yes, that's what I mean.
That drag race was not fair. BMW had DSC turned off.
Doesn't matter, still funny. If you want serious car reviews you're better off watching Fifth Gear or something.
That's even funnier.
Fifth Gear? The cancelled show?
both cars had dsc off... he probably hit a pool of water or something...
GTI doesn't let you turn it all the way off If I remember correctly.
Claiming either one of these cars are reliable and long lasting is criminal. The BMW especially.
Look how shook he was spinning. Imagine how Hammond felt during his episodes. Hammond is some bloke 💪
I've always had a thing for the Volkswagen GTI, I've never owned one but I've always liked them.
I liked as he was spinning out the BMW chime started ringing 😂
+Shion Earl would you suggest a rwd as a first car in an area where the topography is not flat and rain is frequent?
One of the most seen cars on the road in the UK and few say x drive on the back so not me who is suggesting anything. BMW makes RWD cars mainly so its the market.
4:13 Actually I’m finding out now that the Golf is around £800 more to insure than the BMW
So effectively, nothing other that fuel economy was reported correctly between the two? Oh wait never mind, those fuel economy stats come from VW.
Golf gti $34000, bmw 135i $58000,
I pay $2800 year, I got quote from insurance, and bmw 135i is $4200 a year, you guys are getting ripped off.
Canadian dollar btw.
@@mkefayati473 in Germany, the GTI has one of the most expensive insurances because there were hell a lot of accidents with it because it was usually the a car which was driven by young unexpierienced drivers and for them it was way too fast to handle.
@@patrikjansen7831 oh wow! That I did not know. I guess that is a good reason for insurance companies to up the primiums.
@@mkefayati473 I'm 20 with a 13 reg m135 and my insurance is 800 quid a year. Its mind boggling how its so cheap.
The golf has a two litre for cylinder turbocharged engine, and that’s very nice.
Love Jeremy’s disregard for that
Are all GTI turbocharged? Here in Montreal I've seen a few that aren't turbocharged :/
OUTLANDER ENTERTAINMENT the latest models 2014 onwards (I think) have turbochargers I don’t know much about them but I think they do
MAN THAT WAS PERFECT SPIN CONTROL IN THE BMW
HE TURNED THE WHEEL 90 DEGREES *INTO THE SLIDE* AND DIDN'T LET IT SPIN AROUND IN HIS HANDS!
That track looked quite wet, aquaplaning was surely going to happen 😆

Prussian Aristocrat? The BMW is from Bavaria....
+Alex Russett
Haha, that's what I thought. Munich was never in Prussia.
Go into a bmw factory in Bavaria and call them prussians...you may be shot.
Maybe Jeremy is referring to BMW Werk Leipzig?
@@ThatSilentGuy even worse, that's kingdom of Saxony!
It's called an analogy.
Clarkson says he always turns off the TC.
oh, boy. I'm already missing this show
Taking the right tires for the bmw avoid aquaplaning and brings fun to drive the rear weel drive. Driving the front weel drive GTI makes granny's feels happy.
You obviously haven't driven one!
I've watched this video so many times and am still no closer to getting either car
M140i all day long. Golf's are boring.
@Ian Stevenson cant afford it right now but I have definitely been leaning that way for the future
Damn, me too, sad.
what happened there with the BMW at 120 MPH was "aqua-planing" or "Hydro-planing". It needed proper grippy tires - with deeper grooves (winter tires) to drive that fast in such heavy rains. I was driving 170-180 KMH on twisty German highway, in heavy rains with full grip.
