We've brought together EVERY generation of VW Golf R, and we're about to put them head-to-head over the quarter-mile to see just how well VW's pocket rocket has evolved over the years!
To start, let’s check out the stats. The Mk8 Golf R has a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that makes 320hp and 420Nm of torque. That power goes to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This car weighs 1476kg and costs around £43,000 when new.
The Mk7 Golf R has a similar 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that produces 300hp and 380Nm of torque. It comes with four-wheel drive, and the power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car weighs in at 1,500kg, and when new the Mk7 R costs around £32,000.
Moving onto the Mk6 Golf R. It's supposed to have 4-cylinder 2.0L turbo engine that makes 270hp and 350nm of torque, however later in the video you'll see what it really has! It sends it power to all four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, weighs 1546kg and would have cost around £31,000 when new.
The Mk5 was the last generation of golf R to have the mighty 3.2l naturally aspirated VR6 engine. In this car it makes 250hp and 320nm of torque. Power goes to all four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It weighs 1510kg and would have cost £24,000 when new.
Then finally we come to the original Golf R. This car has a 3.2l naturally aspirated VR6 engine. It makes 241hp and 320nm of torque. That power goes to all four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car weighs 1477kg and would have cost just over £22,000 when it was new all the way back in 2002!
So the Mk8 Golf R is the newest car, surely it's got to be the fastest car here then right?! There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

This is inline 6, no V6. VR means verkürzte Reihe (shortened inline). If you look at the crankshaft you will see that it is an inline engine.
Mk6 vw Golf r is not a genuine golf r of that generation. It looks like a 1.4 tsi 😂😂😂😂
How can you recognise the engine based on the looks? 1.4 1.6 2.0 ? Explain. Its just a base Golf body.

It's a nontraditional V6, while it doesn't have two heads, it's pistons aren't aligned in a straight line, nor are they horizontally opposed. In the common engine configurations, it's a V shaped, but for semantics, it's a VR layout.

The octane thing.... Ugh.. so many variables... I don't trust lunches on TH-cam.. or 0-60 stated by the manufacturer, or nurburgring lap times, it should be about the experience.
The whole talk about the fuel isn't technically correct.
The horsepower stated by the manufacturer is done with zero timing correction, that is to say the full advance in the base ignition map, under a controlled atmosphere. HOWEVER. The way you guys idle cars in the sun, forever and ever will introduce timing retardation on the base map from higher IATs. The 102 octane in this case will have given you an advantage, because you heatsoak the crap out of the cars you review. You run them back to back and idle them for long periods of time. Hot air means hotter combustion chamber, which means hotter air before compression, so higher likelihood of detonation.
Basically, the way the ECU detects a poor grade of fuel is knock detection. If it detects knock, it will back off the timing, thus reducing the power.

You can tell when the wild inflation and money printing machine started after the recession in 2008. The price of the new Golf Mark 6 from 2011-12 jumped nearly 50% and all new models have been increasing in price massively since.
It's not about the tires between 8R's race at the end. It's because the German car is actually a Golf 8R 20 Years Anniversary Edition and it has 333 hp, and more tunes to the engine. That's why it Won.

i had a mk6R, it's no way as fast as my MK8R. That MK6R is not stock, it also doesn't have normal golf R wheels and bumpers.
