I really wish I could remember a time when he would help me or let me help him build a rabbit cage or play catch with me or any kind of game. He would just tell me to plow or disk the lower 40 with our farm tractor when I was only 9 years old not showing me how to do it and praying that I done it right or I would be in big trouble. So I really think you are building not only a rabbit cage but a memory that your son will always remember and will tell his kids and grand kids about you and him together building a rabbit cage. If our country's children, if more of them had dad's more like you, we would be a much better nation.

How can I keep my rabbits from being broiled alive? I've debated digging a few holes and making a large (10 by 12 foot) buried heat exchanger then running pipes through the cages to lower the temp. Using a solar system/battery/fountain pump I think it's doable. So what are you doing to keep your rabbit's cool in the summer?
usually i use a fan and constantly blow air on them. This year i may make a colony type setup so the rabbits can burrow down in the ground to stay cool
For that reason and the dimensions plus missing hiding place that doubles as a elevated seating place that setup wouldn’t be allowed in my country. We have very strict animal welfare laws compared to the US 🥴

I'd like to know how much poop is sticking in that gutter.. heh heh heh.. great idea, but I'm skeptical of the effectiveness of this method. my family raised rabbits when I was growing up, we had some metal roofing under the cages to redirect the poop into a pile, it didn't work the poop just caked up on it.
This is not leagal in Sweden. The cages are not big enough and having net as floor is not ok. This would render a conviction for animal cruelty. But then we have the best animal laws in the world.
I like the j clip idea. Im in the process of setting up a new bunny barn atm and WISH i could build hutches like yours. Cheap? Maybe... easy? Not for me... im old n no tools. Lol

Those are way too small. Rabbits need room to stretch their legs and move. They don't belong in cages at all or outside. I can't stand breeders. That's where I got my bunny and she was in something like that. It's just about money for any animal breeders.
Nice build I built mine similar but notice either my poop doesn't roll much or it rolls too fast and the gutter doesn't catch it all. (Similar to yours but not exact) Did you notice any of this?
Good job, although I also own rabbits and those wire floors are terrible for there feet in the long run. Please add a piece of untreated wood or turf into the bottom for them to stand on. They will also need little boxes to lay in.
Urine flows down fine, poop would still get stuck but it's easy to wash out with a hose. Just keep an eye on the water level in your bucket while washing it out.
Great setup. Everything you use looks robust meant to last. Have you ever tried just letting poop and urine drop on the ground? Also, with your setup, how long can you let it build up before you must dump the bucket? Could you have let them both drain into one bucket, meaning the top downspout drains into the lower one? when i clean it with a garden hose they fill pretty quick. I plan to let the bottom row drop onto the ground once i relocate my hutch but that wont be for a bit. Thanks for watchin!
If you have a garden then saving that rabbit manure would do it wonders and rabbit manure is a cold manure meaning you can add it straight to your soil there's no need to compost it.
Even though you rinse the pooh into the bucket. Can you strain the pooh out to use it in compost tea? Or dry it to put in a garden bed? The water doesn't break down the pooh, or needed nutrients?

I want to get and idea of the angle of the sheet metal. I know your cages are 30 inches deep and 18 inches tall, what is the distance between the top and bottom cages? And the distance from the ground to the bottom of the bottom cage?
So he says in another one of his videos that there's a 4 in difference between the top and bottom of the sheet. The cage depth is 30 inches so there's a rise of 1.6 inches per foot. Most roofs have a 1 in per foot increase so this would be a steeper roof.
You seem like lovely people but that cage looks pretty horrific, I mean looks like they can barely turn around and even less jump, just saying it as I'm quessing that you probably wouldn't want to intentionally hurt your rabbits or teach your son bad animal care. The smaller the cage the more important it's to let the rabbits some time to free roam too, 2 hours is the minimum that's recomended.

Rabbits also have thick fur in the bottom of their paws so they don’t even feel the wire Unlike on a flat surface when a rabbit urinates while on wire they don’t sit in it and get urine build up in their fur which attracts flies

Well if you like your rabbits in a cage wire with a place to rest is best. Unless you like wood where they stand in there pee and poop and get sore hocks. Or if you line a wood floor with straw now you get increase risk of ear mites. Wire cage (proper thickness and spacing) is quite hygienic and humane if you do it right. Plus wood absorbs odor and ammonia so they have poorer quality air. If you build cages wire is a great choice!

this its not a good design. Poor rabbit that will get theirs paw hurts. Its not good for them to walk on those metal.

depends on the breed you raise. a good general cage size is 32X30. I dont have instructions i was just building off what i sketched up.

sure did. i run water down it to clean up anything that doesnt roll down.

I usually just dump it right on the garden. Sometimes I put it in a pile then till it in, but usually just put it straight on.
Oh, I have horrible soil up around my house so I have put a ton of it on my yard to get grass growing.

Rabbits should not walk in wire, they are getting sores on their feets. And that not even enough space for 2 rabbits... please do some reseach....

It depends on your cage size but he uses 8 whole 2x4 boards for his build
just throw a worm bin underneath the hutch, the worms will eat all the poop

It’s if you have thin wire it’s bad but heavy gage wire is just fine.
