    I cannot for the life of me understand how they produce such premium books at such an affordable price.

    • @chloedile9769
      @chloedile9769 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      They chose books and translations that are no longer copyrighted, and they mass produce them, so very little is made by hand, if anything. They only have to pay the price of the materials and designers, and given the number of books they sell, they have a payback pretty easily and quickly.
      They actually make more profits on these than Penguin or Oxford classics do, because they don't have anything copyrighted, whereas Penguin and Oxford classics add reading material, and introductions, and these are copyrighted even when the text is not, and it is written by academics which is pretty expensive. That's why it appears proportionally cheaper 😊

      @@chloedile9769 Yes! I do love the B&N leatherbounds and have a handful of my own, but for reading obscure/thoughtfully-curated classics, Penguin and Oxford World Editions is still the way to go. B&N/Canterbury classics are good for collecting and reading too, but comparatively they are a cash cow, and you'll never see the depth and variety of material as the paperbacks offered by the previously-mentioned publishers. I only wish B&N stepped it up a bit more in that department... it feels like as their catalogue expands, they only choose more and more obvious titles.

    • @t0dd000
      @t0dd000 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The B&N books are poorly made. At least they used to be (not a sewn binding). The Canterbury Classics are significantly better.
      Otherwise, they don't pay for the works themselves since they are public domain. (Except for some titles, like Jurassic Park.) And they have no extras, commentary, etc. They pay for art and construction. That's it.
      Finally, they make them in India or Bangladesh or someplace to save on costs.

    Nice books . I have some of those in my collection . I do not really read hard copies (unless books contain visual information such as charts …) , mostly audio books , but I do buy hard copies of books I like after listening them on audible . I have over 130 audio books in my collection and around 70 hard copies ( not all of them hard copies of my audio books ) . I stoped watching TV few years ago and switched to books and I have to tell you - my perception of reality improved along with the quality of my life .

    Be warned if you get those thick books like the Charles Dickens she pulled with the 5 novels, the sheer amount of pages can put pressure on the binding and make the pages sag when stood upright. It doesn't really affect the use of the book but it does put extra wear and tear on it if your trying to keep your books in the best condition possible. Advice I've seen is to roll up some toilet paper and put under the pages when you put the book back on the shelf.

    If you have gotten a chance to read the Jurassic Park Collectible Edition, I was wondering if the red ink from the cover and back bled onto the pages, as while looking on reviews for that specific book this was a major problem. I have a few of these. The quality is nice for the price, but to be honest they do look a bit tacky. Some more than others. I can appreciate how a beautiful book can push people to pick it up more often. But I do feel they are going a bit overboard with the flashiness. To each his own I guess. One thing I also do not like is the omnibus versions. It makes sense to save money, but I find the books unnecessarily difficult to read unless you are sitting on a desk, which happens rarely.

    Your version of Dracula has a factory error!.. it's missing the red color/ink on the cover.
    I have a whole bunch of these, love them. They read fantastic, I love the feel of a heavy leather bound. But they often do come with minor spelling errors. Complete editions are never actually complete in my experience. Foundation trilogy by Azimov straightup misses some pages. They take a version of a book with no copyright, then don't bother to have anyone proofread or check for grammar/text etc. Both CC and BnN do this.
    I also wish they would step over to faux leather instead of bonded leather. Bonded and faux feels the same, they can both feel almost identical to actual leather. The only "benefit" (if you can call it that) bonded leather has is that it contains some actual leather ... so that gives them the ability to claim it's "leather". But bonded leather is also a horribly fragile material that will scuff by just taking it of the shelves or looking at it the wrong way lol. So it makes no sense to use it for covers other than to claim it's leather.
    I would prefer faux leather which at least is super durable and will not scuff as easily, will keep your book in mint condition for longer and protect the book / pages better. I also really wish they stop doing those carboard images they stick on the front of books. What is the point of a "leather cover" if you're just gonna plaster cardboard on top. Maybe use some leather feeling, durable mat coating on top so the gilding etc doesn't damage (I noticed with some it is very durable, with others like my cthulu collection you can wipe of the gilding and color of the leather with a slight touch)
