People wanted a box camera to be able to rig it up for their specific use case. The screen on the side is just a glorified settings screen that you also can use to see what you are shooting. (Yes, Blackmagic should make an external monitor for controlling the camera). And I personally don't care about the lack of HDMI, SDI is objectively better. it would be nice to have a v-mount battery instead, and I think BMD have gotten their feedback for a 2nd or a pro version of this camera
Good point, I don't use gimbals so that wouldn't be a problem for me. I prefer V-mount because I can power multiple accessories with the same battery. But that is the beauty of a box camera, you can rig it up as you want, and in this case, choose which type of battery you want
On sticks I operate from the operator side of the camera, but I do agree that it's not ideal when handheld. But the komodo is far from an ideal option either since once you go above head height you run into the same issues.
Blackmagic has already stated the Pyxis is not for price-conscious videographers, but is for entry level cinematographers. I don't need the 4" side screen to flip out. I'll be using the EVF or the video assist 7". I'll also be using it with the NiSi Athena Prime 5-lens kit and drop-in ND filters at $6K. I don't need or want built-in NDs because I want the creative flexibility to use my own ND options. Battery is not an issue. You can get the larger Sony BPU that runs for 5 hours. I don't need an HDMI either, because I need longer cable runs in my 1700 sq ft studio. Lack of ProRes is not an issue. You can easily export ProRes from Fusion Studio with the Saver node. Your DaVinci Studio license also works for Fusion Studio. Nothing said is this video dissuaded me. My Pyxis is on preorder.
But... it's priced at a price that is perfect for price-concious videographers. So I don't think you want to exclude huge amounts of a market deliberately. Everyone who can't afford a Komodo, should want this camera it could have stolen so much of that market share with a few more improvements. And you're BPU battery is going to run your Pyxis and your 7inch monitor for 5 hours? I don't think so. But if you're happy with the compromises, go for it. This is just my opinion on why I'm not.
Would you not still be able to use your own ND's for your creative flexibility even if the camera have built in ND's by not using the built in ND's? I'm confused on why you made that a point of contention.
It’s a substantially worse image and requires an adapter to get sort of near the same field of view and no open gate for anamorphic shooters. Also no tilt screen - it’s a great camera, but not really more versatile.
@@thesavagefilmmaker I carry half the lenses, can adapt more. It has open gate, but that's UHD which makes anamorphic look AMAZING in 4:3, which these others can't do. The tilt screen is debatable, I guess, but it's not an issue in pro settings, which is where I use it. I ALWAYS choose our B-camera to be a pocket 4k because of its versatility. Every camera these days is great. Love almost all of them, but not all cameras suit everybody. I'm incredibly happy people love whatever camera they love.
😂people keep complaining, blackmagic dont even had to put a monitor on that box camera for the price , but they are still generous making a 4 inch touchscreen on the side for menu and a bonus for viewing, it is meant to have an additional monitor on top
@@thesavagefilmmaker for me as an operator for gimbal support and a stick yeah it’s perfect. its not a red komodo.it’s just a 2nd monitor or a touchscreen menu. its a box camera and for the price it’s over
if blackmagic didnt put the screen on the side this people.will.shut their mouth!, i agree with you it shouldnt come with a screen. blackmagic is generous and futuristic having the controls on the side with a touchscreen. ill get the camera anyways.
@@thesavagefilmmakerthey cant do that and they wont, its a business stragety, they still have ursa, it will compete with ursa. thats why they dont do it. most of the people dont understand this. its a business strategy. if you dont like the camera dont get it
They just wanted to get in on the entry cube market. A flip out screen would have been ideal whilst allowing for missing ports to be placed (hidden) behind in camera body. A lot of manufacturers seem to operate on a minimal viable product
Screen on top of Komodo is horrible. The minute you have it on a tripod you can't get to it. I see the screen on the side as a fancy user interface, just like every camera has its controls on the side - RED, Arri, Venice, FX6 etc etc. Not sure where you're going with the top thing. No pro operator wants that. And why are you talking about an assistant? The screen is on the operator side of the camera, not the assistant side - see Venice. P.S. Not a BM fanboy - own Sony cams!
I very rarely operate a camera at head height, so controlling the camera from where I am positioned (behind the camera) is very important to me and I'm sure to many filmmakers shooting handheld, off sticks, easy rig.
@@thesavagefilmmaker The screen on the side isn't intended to be the operator screen. These guys assume you'll add a 3rd party monitor like a Portkeys, Small HD etc. I don't know anyone with a Komodo who ops off the screen. Have you seen that little top screen? It's rubbish. They've also got that lovely looking EVF which I'm sure you could use HH from above or on the shoulder if you rig it with a V-lock. My concerns with this camera are the bad RS, no NDs and only having Braw codec, not the side screen for menus.
I put mine on the tripod all the time and still have access to the Komodo’s top screen. All the other cameras you mentioned are meant to be operated using a crew.
@@FelixCervantes OK. FX6, FX9, Burano, every single camcorder and ENG camera, every broadcast camera etc etc. All have side operation. Top screen on Komodo is there because it's a crash cam!
IMO this is why the side screen is flawed. Let’s say you’re shooting a documentary scene and you’re running audio into the camera. You noticed the audio is a bit on the low side so now you have to ruin your shot by flipping the camera on its side to access the touchscreen menu. Like he mentioned in the video if black magic offers a screen down the road with menu access this will obviously be fixed.
Friend, congratulations on the video, I was about to buy the Pyxis this week as I'll be in the United States, but your video opened my mind and I decided to buy the Pocket 6k fullframe!
I would argue a screen on the side is more accessible than a screen on top. If I am on sticks and the camera is high I won’t be able to reach it, where as a side screen will be easier to see. Tilting camera on the side, or bringing down to see the screen doesn’t really make a difference to me.
It would have been practical if they provided the screen unattached that could then be attached on top (or as convenient) on a tilt/twist mount. A cube shape when requested has rigging, modularity and practicality as end-goals, correct?
From what I remember people only asked for a box/cube style camera, all the other additions request and complaints followed after the announcement of the PYXIS , so let’s keep it honest.
The second you said the Komodo screen is better placed I could not take you seriously. That screen is AWFUL on a set, whenever the camera is higher than the camera operator it’s useless. I wish the Box camera had a hing, that’s all it would need to be perfect for my use case.
exactly non of the TH-camrs talk about that 💀💀 the Venice & arri have side monitors on the side only for adjusting settings not for anything else. bunch of clowns I swear. Especially when the monitor is on the operating side and not the AC side 🤦♂️ can't listen to TH-camrs anymore
I'd prefer to have the option to rig things on both sides of my camera if needed, that's why the Komodo design is more functional. But as I said, if this was a flip out screen, it would also have been completely fine.
@@RyanPiwarskiagreed… more gibberish filling up TH-cam.. remember the Sony FS700, with the screen on top… Sony quickly learned that was the worse design.
The Komodo was designed as a crash cam and for solo operators. For the solo operators, the screen on top is ideal especially when it is handheld. In the majority of shooting scenarios, the screen on top is more ideal.
I'd make the touch screen removable so the operator can place it where it's most comfortable for them with how the cam is rigged out. Seems like every cam review complains about the placement etc. No such thing as a one size fits all. And, it gives them another revenue stream as you could upgrade to a larger screen.
Also, pyxis propably allows for stereo sound in the 3.5 which adds one channel, doesn't it? So boom mic on front and dual channel remote audio in the back. Sounds good to me!
Thanks for the honest review (from an experienced BMPCC user like yourself). You've cooled my heals on wanting the Pyxis (sorry Grant), hopefully the V2 version will fix some of the shortcomings you mentioned. Personally, as mostly a studio shooter, the Pyxis would be fine but so would the 6k Pro Full Frame at a lower price point. I think I'll sit on this one. Once again... loving your channel and the new studio lighting look.
Exactly! Sometimes it seems that Blackmagic engineers are not shooters. You need to know who your market is. For example, the new Cooke SP3 lenses have the focus marks on the top of the lens, way more convenient for solo operators.
Absolutely agree with your thoughts on the PYXIS. I still love my BMPCC6k not FF 😊 maybe upgrading in future for a PYXIS V2 with a top screen 😅. What kind of lens you are using at 14:44 Minutes? Thanks for your content enjoying a lot your style of content 🤘🏼
I’m mainly a Panasonic shooter but when I saw the 6k FF I purchased it. Tried it for about a month and sold it. Loved the image but the battery was so bad I only used it with a v-mount battery which blocked the screen so I had a screen on top. I really didn’t like the sound I was getting and with no way to sync my Mixpre 3 ii other than clap….. I decided to sell it. I would rather put my own ND’s on the front of the lens rather than have bad internal NDs so I didn’t mind lack of ND. I used to own the Komodo and I hated the top screen and only used that camera with an SDI monitor but sold that one too. When I saw the PYXIS release I immediately ordered it as it has a time code port, love the screen on the side as it will only be for status as I’ll still run an SDI monitor on top and I’m sure someone will have a v-mount option by the time it ships. What this camera gives me over the S5iix is 6k open gate with anamorphic 1.6 in true 24fps. Have a set of Sirui anamorphic L mount lenses with a 1.6 squeeze so this camera was made for me. I wouldn’t have cared if they put the monitor on the bottom…..
Have you considered trying Kipon's EF-L speed booster with the 6k FF? Allows you to shoot 4k 60fps 17:9 with extra stop of light and better rolling shutter around 15ms while still maintaining FF coverage.
I stuck with the 6KFF and it’s been my favourite camera of the decade. I’ve never had a camera before that does what I wanted it to do without a rig and extra monitor! I did add the battery grip though. Kinda feel like I’m shooting with a Canon 1Dx lol. I really feel like the 6KFF is gonna go down as a classic!
Nice video as always ! Like many I think the screen on the side is not the deal breaker here. Although it is too big making the camera a bit too long, there is here a big missed opportunity to make the screen swivel. So you can use the camera in its smallest form. The battery choice is also debateable... every BM camera uses a different battery brand and model... they should stick with one (and V-mount would have been better). But there are three things (as I already said on BM forum) that this camera needs to be a success : - a BM screen with touch interface and video feed and power with just one cable - a BM side handle with start and stop recording and fn buttons - AND SOME FREAKINC CODECS OTHER THAN ONLY BRAW !!! ProRes, h264, hevc265... no clients want to deal with braw ! Only for personnal projects it is good
I do like the direction they're heading with the Pyxis... but the recent price drop of the BMCC6K was a no-brainer and I just bought one of those. I've always like the formfactor of the pockets when you add a cage and v-mount battery. You can rig it or strip it down and it works wither way. Hopefully there will be a Pyxis Pro with upgraded sensor and flip-screen at some point? Either way, all the options they have right now are an insane value.
For the Monitor, I would wait until they launch a Video Assist that use both USB-C for both power and video signal and control. Something that you need to pay a huge premium with RED (800 for a DVI by Red to 16Pin by RED to use your 3500 EVF, or a 3500 small HD monitor)
I personnally think side screen is a far better option than on top like Red komodo, on gimbal and on tripod you still have the option to touch the screen on the side while operating while you can't on Red Komodo if the camera is above you head. I still prefer flip screens though
Thank you for the breakdown. Guy! having your opinion is always valuable and your points are very reasonable! I was thinking exactly the same things, being a box camera for the sake of the form-factor only won't cut it so we might want to see what BM is going to learn from this release and what version 2 or 3 Pixys will look like. I'm still happy I went for 6K Pro when I did and I love this camera, even though I was used to shooting on full frame DSLR. I adapted to Super35 sensor quite quickly and everything else is so good I don't feel like changing to anything less, no internal NDs, no usable screen, etc, so I'm not even upset about being unable to get 6K FF right now or Pixys for that matter. My 6K Pro is still my "new camera" and I couldn't be happier for it :)
I think they put the flaws there on purpose, all the hype about a "box" camera will sell quite a few units, then next year they will have ND filters and some other dumb shit. Then after that they will do a flip out screen, then a few years down the road, OMG AUTOFOCUS! Sticking with my 6k pro for now.
For my run and gun shoot, i will stick with my beefy rigged out BMCC 6K Full Frame and best wait for the 2nd cube form factor iteration with additional full size, well placed ports and less bashed reviews by a number of CC & film makers. I like the side screen and its usefulness on my end. A flipping one would be great though. Also, firmware updates would be great to address the other needs.
Totally agree with everything you've said. Blackmagic must be mad to bring this piece of crap out. But they aren't the only manufacturer pushing junk to market, just take a look at the new Panasonic S9!!!😅😅😅
Another great video brother. Actually prefer the older design too... It's a bit disappointing that there's not much different between the two cameras, with the battery being probably the biggest. Glad they went away from the tiny batteries, but I wonder why not use the ubiquitous (and much cheaper) Sony NP design. No HDMI is a simply bizarre choice given the actual user base for this camera. Meh, BM is a wee bit like Canon with the hammer at this point. The screen placement? Would have been just find if it flipped out... but hey, I do think there will be lots of people happy with it.
We asked for a box shaped Pocket 6k pro/Cinema 6k FF. I rather have no screen and a smaller form factor. I feel like the design is centered around fitting the screen on the camera. I also rather have a s35 6K sensor and get higher frame rates. I miss the ND from the 6K pro. I can live without IBIS and AF. The cam should have 2 xlrs. I'm not sold on the Sony batteries. But if it fixes the terrible battery life. It's okay. I mostly shoot on a gimbal. So I like a smaller lighter battery.
Thank you! You are 100% correct. It's almost they were like, "here's your damn box camera, now leave us alone". Give us 2 damn xlr ports and a 120fps in at least 4k. This is the same company that won't let us record in BRaw via hdmi to the video assist. So stupid!
Just buy the Ursa at that point. You pointed out everything YOU don’t like as if it’s the only way to rig a or operate a camera because of the location of a screen. It’s crazy the amount of complaints these TH-camrs make about camera releases especially when it comes to Blackmagic. They’ve already given the world the camera we’ve been asking for over and over again. It’s the ursa, just slightly larger than this. I have the OG 6K and I hate rigging it every time I have to use it but I like the end result. The new bodies are horrendous and bulky with dumb ergonomics. I’d put a screen on the Pyxis any day over spending money on their newer Sub 2.5k cameras. This camera is way more versatile than any of their pocket “Cinema” cameras. None of them have clean 4K HDMI output. Plus HDMI is laggy compared to SDI. From documentary to studio, this outperforms any of the pocket series. The bi-directional SDI/HDMI IS $69 from Blackmagic for your ATEM needs.
I dedicated a whole video to the Ursa 12k mate, it doesn’t mean the Pyxis is good. As a bridge between the Ursa and the pocket line, it’s a pretty ropey bridge. Also I’m not a TH-camr, I’m a filmmaker who TH-cams 😎
From One fanboy to another, I'm about to out-fanboy you. Your argument about this camera doesn't make sense and is outright rubbish. Now, why am I saying this? In your 1st B-roll clip, you have a two-camera setup for an interview with two external monitors on the cameras while trashing the Pyxis for needing an external monitor. I'm sure you have reasons for needing external monitors for your setup, but could you let me know why this camera is trash? Because you need an external monitor or an EVF? Having a 4" 1,500 nit monitor on the side of the camera is revolutionary. It saves a ton of real estate for other accessories. If you put a top handle on the Komodo, the monitor becomes useless, so you return to an external monitor. BlackMagic is aimed at professional filmmakers with this camera. This camera was designed for a professional workflow, meaning it's meant to be rigged.
I didn't say this camera was trash. I said it's got some major flaws that mean I don't think it's a worthy upgrade from the 6K Full Frame. I always use external monitors when doing Doc work, that's just standard operating procedure. However with the FF it's much easier to change my settings from the back, than looking at a front monitors image and then changing settings on the side of the camera, you don't see how that's a little ass backwards?? Of course you're going to rig the camera, but there's a difference between a functional rig and one that isn't.
My ursa touchscreen stopped working. I can see it but it doesn't respond to touch. I think I forever hate BM for it. Would probably be different with global in all of their cameras though
if the side screen would have to be used for monitoring, then it would obviously be a disaster haha, but for settings i don't think it's an issue at all. i think it's cool that they provide a larger screen then the komodo perhaps for monitoring, and for that it had to be on the side. it obviously needs a second monitor anyway, and yes, blackmagic should make one that you can plug directly into the same port as the viewfinder. i think the flip screen wouldn't be ideal at all bc looking so far down is not ideal ergonomically. it would need to be more up top. quite few inexpensive cameras have this with an internal screen, but i mean something like the canon c200, that would be ideal it think.
by the way i'm mostly saying this because i use a canon c70, and i wish it had the same monitor design as the c200. love everything else about that camera
Thank you for your video. Very informative. Can you record with SSD and CFExpress Type B card simultaneously as real time backup in your Blackmagic 6K Full Frame?
bpu is not a limited system, id been using that battery since 2015... its fine also the reason why they use bpu, because if you dont want the vmount and want lighter battery it will do, and if you want vmount, there is already bpu to vmounts its already been available 10 years ago, blackmagic knew this.
@@thesavagefilmmaker maybe for you. but for us no. blackmagic prefered it because there is a reason. different people. look me myself is a vmount user i have ursa mini 4.6k, but still i prefer bpu. very small. if you wanna go small and still if you wanna go big theres a bpu to vmount. its not that expensive too.
@@thesavagefilmmaker I understand you have an opinion, I wasn’t coming at you for that. I’m telling people in general if you don’t like what a single camera offers there are more out there to choose from these days. There’s no limit on options, but people want to spend a certain price and that is when there are omissions such as the ones you mentioned. The line up has the features you want, the price point does not
As somebody who works on professional sets and not these indy 4 person crews, the operator is on the left side of the camera 100% of the time unless its on a gimbal, a crane or a drone. This camera is meant for a narrative crew that will definitely have at least 2 ops on the camera and there will definitely be an external monitor mounted. If you're a solo operator or a skeleton doc crew, just use another camera and stop criticizing gear that isn't meant for you. A camera is just a tool for the job. If this tool isn't for you, then get one that is.
Come on bro, as somebody who also works on professional sets you can’t tell me with a straight face this ISN’T designed for indie crews. You’d be using a different camera altogether if this was not a project with a small team. So it’s 100 percent meant for that. So of course I’ll criticise it. Also can you remind me which high end Red or Arri or Sony camera has the monitor built into the side of the camera?? 🤣🤣
You don’t work on professionals sets. Who’s your union rep? What’s your local? Never seen you on the backlots. In any case, yes it’s for indie crews. However indie crews will still use 2 cam ops, if not, I wouldn’t work with them. The time wasted would be astronomical. And to answer your question, you don’t even get a monitor on most cameras. REDS aren’t used very often on set, the industry mostly uses either ARRI, Sony Venice or film on arriflex or panavision. But for most of those cameras, the controls are (drum roll) on the left side of the camera, where the operator is. Some will have redundant controls on the AC side but not all. Listen, I don’t care If you use this camera or not, it just doesn’t make sense to shit all over a camera that isn’t for you. Blackmagic seems to get shit on all time I just don’t understand it. Having controls on the left side is what all major industry camera manufacturers do and giving you an extra space for viewing your feed is a plus. The top is the WORST spot for your controls, that’s why ARRI and SONY don’t do that.

@@thesavagefilmmaker it’s a professional cinema camera and for most people using it having the ability for your AC to access settings while on an EZ rig or handheld is really important. The Komodo is extremely frustrating for an AC to work on while shooting.
No. A box camera is a box camera so that people can rig it how they want. Having a monitor on the top prevents you to have a convenient top plate and big enough top handle, and other stuff. People complain about that for the Komodo. Look at all main cinema cameras, who has the monitor on top??? None!! Many have a lot of buttons on the sides. Many Arri cameras even have menu monitor on the operator side. If you hand is holding the top handle it would be a nightmare having a monitor under there. There is no need to make a drama out of the side monitor, really. The position of the monitor on the pocket is horrible if you want to rig the camera. It makes the whole build absurdly long big and heavy if you want to put a v-mount behind. I own 5 Blackmagic pockets so I know what I am speaking about. The fact the sensor is the same of the Cinema FF is not a problem. Because finally it's a box camera as users have asked since years. For this price you can't expect them to put one of their in-house sensors of something new... It's just a Sony sensor that many use in the market. BP-U batteries aren't a problem if you know anything of rigging. Clearly the camera is not wide enough for the ports to fit with a v-mount directly on the camera. But assuming the majority will use some sort of mounting bottom plate, you can just use rails and put a v-mount plate on rails just behind a small BP-U, and voilà. So you have access to the v-mount, and to the ports. Believe me I have wanted a v-mount access directly on camera for long time, but I see that this can be the best solution without it becoming so stupidly huge like on the Pocket. The side monitor is just for settings. And settings on the side are fine, again, the main manufacturers do it like that. It's fine. The fact Komodo is made in that way doesn't mean all cameras need to be like that. I don't want it to be like a Komodo. Also, if you use a box camera, you know you will need an external monitor anyway, so no need to complain. You mention the lack of hdmi port... but I am grateful for the sdi port instead. Hdmi is no professional port, too weak and unreliable. I am the first to be critical about Blackmagic choices when I feel it is necessary, but it is ridiculous to complain about non-existent problems. It sends a wrong message, and it makes real critics of real problems less efficient for Blackmagic to take them into consideration. Just because of the mass of people ranting about stuff without having understood it. Please next time make a video only when you know what you are speaking about and after having used the camera in the way it is intended. Use the Pyxis, use it as a box camera, see how it works, you will see you will like it if you don't like the over-sized dslr style as you say.
These problems do exist, you're just choosing not to acknowledge them. I understand they made a box camera, a box camera that is quite flawed, thus leaving it open to criticism. If it works for you, great. But there's a lot of things that don't work for a lot of people. So it's not ridiculous to complain, it's what a professional would do who's interested in them making a good version of this. You don't like the Komodo top LCD screen, no problem, I also suggested a flip out screen on the side, but just a giant side screen with no controls or buttons anywhere else? C'mon that's not practical.
@@thesavagefilmmaker This is a 3000$ camera! You are complaining about the lack of features that exist in cameras that cost at least double if not 10 times more! (and don't include the Pocket in the list, that monitor is why the pocket form factor is unriggable, besides, no pocket ever had side foldable monitor) You need to be realistic. You made a 22 minutes video complaning about a camera without even having used it once! What if you use it and you discover that at the end the side monitor is not that unusable and actually the form factor allows so many more things more easily than the pocket?
I think they didn't do flip out so as not to be too similar to their cinema 6k. And putting screen on top cost alot of money, to have new screen dimension the price is crazy versus just using what they currently have. To have screen on top they have to manufacturer a new screen, even though it's small, it will cost alot more and they might need to tweak their firmware to fit the new size and shift stuff around. I think their mistake is not to have flip out screen, because so what if it cannibalize their cinema 6k? It's better to cannibalize your own sales versus letting other cannibalize on yours.
Price dropped on the 6k cinema. Does that change anyone's opinion? 😊 I won't buy it, but would buy that over the phyxis. No HDMI is an automatic no for starters.
Yea it changed mine. I was going to get a Pyxis, but just grabbed the current 6KFF. The form factor really isn't that bad when you add a cage, rails, v-mount, ect. It's basically just a cube anyways. I'll now just save up for the 12k FullFrame Ursa down the road.
You lost me at “One Person Shooter or Solo operator” That’s what the Pocket body design is for. This camera is clearly designed to op with an AC and crew. Screen on side is better for when cam is on top sticks or rigged high and you can still adjust settings. Overall it’s a screen for settings and info that happens to show image if you choose. If they took the screen away and made a 3in one like Arri or Venice with nobs/wheels to navigate. People would be up in arms about them taking away the beloved UI on the cameras. Have the 6KFF and I’m getting the Pyxis. Why? Because I’ll have the best of both ergonomics for solo and production gigs. All of which can easily be paid off with the return investment in two weeks worth of work and the rest of the year would be strictly profit. Or I can get an Alexa 35 and take a year or two paying that off before I start making profit back on it
I don't think this is designed to use exclusively with a crew (Thats the new 12k camera). I think it's designed for people who want an affordable cube, many of whom won't have much of a crew. And it COULD have been a great camera for Solo Doc filming if it was slightly better designed. But I can't disagree with your logic.
@@thesavagefilmmaker Yes the 12K and 17K are designed with crew in mind and are competing with Alexa, Sony Venice, Red. but not all productions with a crew can afford those higher tier rentals. Or they realize they don’t need that high spec of a camera and would rather use the budget more wisely elsewhere. That’s why a medium tier now exists like Komodo X, Burano. That is where the Pyxis stands tier wise. Low to medium budget with crew trying to get amazing image with what they have. The bonus is that there’s another camera with the same sensor in the same image as that a cam. But you can solo operate, running & gun and get some matching b-roll. Or film a solo doc. thats the Pocket and 6k FF comes into play.
We don’t think you’re pointing out a cameras flaws more so pointing out what makes you not the demographic for this body. Hence why the bmcc exists for you
Just curious, have you spoke with them for some of these answers? These companies do things for a reason, they do listen to feedback, heck they asked me last year, 2023 cinegear and ask me again at 2024 cinegear - the questions were not tech, but workflow. doesnt mean I agree with everything, but they cant please everyone. As to who sits next to their camera, me, most of the time, even if I have a crew or solo. - Is it a great camera? I have no idea, but I never say a company did or didnt do something because what were they thinking! As I have been involved with several of these companies and everything is a compromise, price point, placement in the product line etc. You see, sometimes adding a $1 part can mean a $2.60 increate in retail price. adding an XLR could mean multiple changes. Dont blindly say company A does it it so why doesnt company B? because maybes is a product placement issue, imagine they do everything you want, and now it kills the ursa sales
You can't please everyone, but you can logically iron out glaring problems before introducing them into a camera. I love Blackmagic, but this is a very flawed design. No I haven't spoken to them, but I'd love to speak to whoever they spoke to who told them this layout was a good idea. Also the whole concept of not doing something because it will hurt your old product only creates new products that are missing important features. It's the same thing everyone complained about Canon for doing in their cameras.
Exactly. When you step back and think that we have a 6K FullFrame RAW camera now at $1500... it's mind blowing. Even if it's a *slightly older sensor-- that kind of tech/specs were only available in a $25k+ Red camera just 5 years ago. It's nuts.

"I own 4 blackmagic cameras" that actually makes you 4 times more of a fanboy... Not 3... Hahaha
"They clearly decided not to actually ask what filmmakers wanted from a cube camera." It's always wild when TH-camrs can't believe that other industry professionals might want different things. No, it's that they didn't talk ro anybody. That's must be it.
BMPCC cameras are too good in the result images, and always moving forward with new ideas. Having Davinci available to the public for free and so on. Someone does not like it. And that someone wants/makes to change the Black Magik business strategy, and sends Black Magic in the wrong way, make them spend time and money for nothing. This is a business competition. It always happens. Wish, the Black Magic would not go in the wrong way too far.
Putting an outdated 2018 sensor in a new but, mediocre body is a fail in my book. I’ve decided to take a pass and go with a Komodo. Even Kinefinity has a better product on the market.
@@thesavagefilmmaker - I don’t mind the trade off of super 35 and I’d rather have the global shutter instead of 19ms latency. Also, I intend to use external audio recording and timecode. I was really anticipating a more competitive camera and was willing to pay a little more but, they didn’t deliver. I’ve waited long enough time for them to get their act together and this camera doesn’t cut it. It’s their loss.
I lost interest cause it’s the same sensor as the 6k pro and they took away ProRes not good for uploading to clients and editing depts. No upadated frame rates like the Komodo X vs the Komodo OG …….. black magic is starting to have wasted SKUs like RED did long ago…… before they simplified it
Obviously your lack of technical understanding is shining through like staring into the sun. The reason for not putting Built in ND filters is not the lack of space in the body. It’s because of the flange depth of the L Mount there is no room to fit the filters between the back of the lens and the sensor. That does not change because the body has more room it’s that way because that’s what L Mount requires. Had they have gone with a dedicated PL or LPL mount they could have done that. It’s built to a budget and a market. You can’t have everything for 3k.
So by that logic you're saying that both their EF version and their PL version could have had ND filters then? So.... which sun are you staring into? 😄😎
@@thesavagefilmmaker That’s correct they could have but that would have been a complete redesign of the optical block and a dedicated PL or EF models (not unlike we have now). But zero chance of that with any mirrorless mount. There simply isn’t any room. If they do this and I’m not saying they won’t be prepared to pay a lot more than 3k. Bit like the Pocket Cinema (L mount) and the 6k pro (EF mount) the pro is more expensive in spite of the fact that it has a cheaper sensor. The ND’s come at a price. I agree it would be great and maybe down the line they do that in PL and or EF. I couldn’t say why the only have 1 XLR but it might be that the 12g SDI has a price too and to mitigate against the higher price they cut one XLR ( while know isn’t just a plug A to D circuit etc) The fixed screen swivels cost money. Sony have had fixed side screens for years no protest from the market. Look at theBMD no holds barred 12K FF not much wanting there but it costs 15k (still cheap). For 15k you could buy 2 Sony or Arri Eye pieces. I don’t think BMD works in a vacuum but they are building to a budget and sometimes you have to compromise to hit the target. If they could add it for the price they would. Personally I think they get it more right than they get it wrong. Battery that is a strange one but there has to be a reason for it and it probably comes down to money. Komodo X $20k great camera but better than the 12k FF at $15k not even close. But I say if the Komodo X works better for you then spend the extra $17k over the Pyxis and you still won’t have built in ND’s but you will have the screen where you want it.
Man, people can like or not like the new form factor; but that rolling shutter really is a problem for these full frame blackmagic cameras. I know cameras like the S5iix have higher rolling shutter on paper, yet it somehow looks less pronounced than it does here; and when you consider Pani also has ibis/autofocus/better low light/ProRes internal/flip screen/etc at $500 less than even the FF 6K; it makes me nervous for Blackmagic. Would have loved to see the first Pyxis ship with the super35 URSA sensor as a 4.6K model or even the pocket 6K pro sensor with ND’s; and do a full frame gen 2 later once they iron it out a bit.
Brother, with due respect, everything you said is rubbish and quite disappointing. For you to be such a BMD user, you sounded naive of what a cinema camera is. You talked about how many BMD cameras you own...right? Well, I own more. From the first Big Ursa to Ursa Mini 4.6K to Ursa Mini G2 to the pocket 6K to the Pocket full frame to now going to purchase the Pyxsis. So that statement you made was silly. Also, I make movies. Not content, not documentary, not weddings...movies! Over 10 Full length movies under my belt. Also, these are movies that are streaming on major platforms such as Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Prime, Peacock and iTune. SO I'm not your typical TH-camr. Now, about your laughable review. First, the screen. On top , they gave you many ways to mount a monitor on top or you can use the EVF. So that argument/complaint doesn't hold weight. Second, if they gave you the adjustable screen on the side, it then becomes Ursa Mini (which will be stupid on their part). So the screen is fine. Set your damn settings and be done with it. Also, there are tons of cinema cameras with screens on the side, why aren't you whining about those cameras?? If they copied Komodo, then why buy the Pyxsis?? That would be stupid and dumb on their part. Movie DPs set their cameras up (settings) for the day and focus on framing...only a TH-cam content creator or wedding guys changes settings every 5 minutes. Lastly, people whine about the ND...every movie set and major TV series sets have/has a thing called matte box with all kinds of filters. SO that kills that argument. WHy?? Because that's how the pros do it sir. If you shoot movies (solo or with a crew) this camera can be rigged to fit every single thing on set. Which is what this camera was designed for. DPs that are actually shooting movies, not sitting on TH-cam complaining about a camera that was designed for controlled environment( movies sets and TV series sets). So your argument is flawed my guy. Any professional film DP will tell you you are just complaining to complain. Not to mention , it's only $3K. Smdh...so if you want a run and gun camera, go buy that and quit your whining.
A few things; Firstly aside from the dubious monitor placement, you think one mini XLR input, choosing BPU batteries to power the Pyxis, and no update to the sensor is PRO for BM's first Cube cine cam? C'mon pal, let's be real. Secondly, assessing me as simply being an ignorant TH-cam/Content creator only reveals your own. A brief review of my channel would show otherwise. So don't try to flex on me with your BM use, or your experience, I have a web series shot on the Ursa G1 available on Amazon Prime, I just filmed a doc where I travelled to 6 countries filming on Blackmagic 6k's. I've also made two feature films, which sold worldwide, and one feature doc. You can watch a breakdown of one of my MOVIES shot on the Ursa G1 on this channel. So when we talk about what you do vs what I do, with all due respect - don't throw rocks at a man holding a machine gun. And you say, 'Only a TH-cam content creator or wedding guy changes settings every 5 minutes' I guess you're forgetting traditional Documentary filmmakers who constantly need to adjust their settings? Or the days on narrative film sets where you are in uncontrollable environments - (like outside), so whose argument is flawed, my guy? I shoot across multiple formats, and I want the most FUNCTIONAL, flexible, well-thought-out Cube that takes the lessons and tech pre-existing from the Ursa line and other BM cameras and delivers something smaller, better. The Pyxis sadly isn't IT. I'm complaining because without people complaining, BM might think they just hit a home run, (which they didn't) and they won't make the necessary improvements to hit a home run in the future. If you're happy buying a softball, then, by all means, go ahead. I'm sure you'll make it work, but 'making it work' is too often the default when we talk about Blackmagic cameras. To be honest, I respect your hustle and your accomplishments, you just called out the wrong person to make an argument that my opinion is based on inexperience or being a 'TH-camr' as opposed to a legit 'Filmmaker'.
According to FB PYXIS group peeps, we should be banned for life for bringing up the single operator/side monitor issue. Democratic freedom of expression, apparent is limited to everything but critiquing the quirks of this camera lol
@@thesavagefilmmaker I was told in the FB group that all professional camera ops only ever stand on the operational left side of their cameras; that I therefore cannot be a professional; and also because I criticised the monitor placement on the pyxis I must then hate Blackmagic and therefore… must be a troll and therefore should be banished lol
And the screen on the side is preventing the rigging of anything on that side of the camera.
That is true, but I'm sure that some smart cage manufacturers can figure out a way to make a usable cage
V mount would inhibit gimbal (RS3/4) use. This way you can have both - just like an FX6 etc.
Good point, I don't use gimbals so that wouldn't be a problem for me. I prefer V-mount because I can power multiple accessories with the same battery. But that is the beauty of a box camera, you can rig it up as you want, and in this case, choose which type of battery you want
@@sindrekdn What's the point of accessories being smart when the initial creation is foolish and results in unnecessary workarounds!
On sticks I operate from the operator side of the camera, but I do agree that it's not ideal when handheld. But the komodo is far from an ideal option either since once you go above head height you run into the same issues.
True. I just very rarely go above head height. But if it was a flip screen like the Ursa - all problems solved.
That's the spirit of a doer.
Would you not still be able to use your own ND's for your creative flexibility even if the camera have built in ND's by not using the built in ND's? I'm confused on why you made that a point of contention.
I guarantee you will be frustrated by these workarounds and will be happy once you can afford a proper camera
BMPCC4k. It's more versatile than both of these great cameras.
@@dpc4548 Guy doesn't know the 4k has open gate anamorphic...
😂people keep complaining, blackmagic dont even had to put a monitor on that box camera for the price , but they are still generous making a 4 inch touchscreen on the side for menu and a bonus for viewing, it is meant to have an additional monitor on top
They could be more generous and put it in the RIGHT place.
@@thesavagefilmmaker for me as an operator for gimbal support and a stick yeah it’s perfect. its not a red komodo.it’s just a 2nd monitor or a touchscreen menu. its a box camera and for the price it’s over

Right on. ❤
Great to hear!
You kept it a 💯. Agree with your sentiment. Hopefully it caters to at least a certain niche of filmmakers.
I'm sure the next version will be great.
I would argue a screen on the side is more accessible than a screen on top. If I am on sticks and the camera is high I won’t be able to reach it, where as a side screen will be easier to see. Tilting camera on the side, or bringing down to see the screen doesn’t really make a difference to me.
Yeah, but Ursa-style flip screen would solve both issues - camera being lower or higher than the operator
Exactly - like every other pro camera! Only Komodo has the top screen nonsense because of it's niche design.
Give me a flip screen or a top screen just don't give me a side screen. 5% of my filming is at my head height where the side screen is useful.
@@donmcvey Yeah it was originally built to be a crash cam
It would have been practical if they provided the screen unattached that could then be attached on top (or as convenient) on a tilt/twist mount. A cube shape when requested has rigging, modularity and practicality as end-goals, correct?
True bro, I totally agree, and i think for this reason, the Pyxis wont sell that much.
From what I remember people only asked for a box/cube style camera, all the other additions request and complaints followed after the announcement of the PYXIS , so let’s keep it honest.
The cube style when requested has rigging, modularity and practicality as unstated end-goals.
I'm not a TH-camr. I'm a Filmmaker who TH-cams. 😎👍
I wonder if you can route the single XLR to both channels and run the second lower as a safety. and then use the 3.5mm jack for channels 3&4?
I hope so. But I'd still much prefer two XLR's + one 3.5mm jack.
100% agree. Best cinema camera usability design I've tested so far is the canon C70.
If only they'd used some of the lessons from the c70!

Really good take. Even if you are a NZer… full frame is more important than fast fps and internal nds
Full frame is king!
Thanks! Full frame for studio work makes more sense unless you need SDI out for your rigging.
Exactly! Sometimes it seems that Blackmagic engineers are not shooters. You need to know who your market is. For example, the new Cooke SP3 lenses have the focus marks on the top of the lens, way more convenient for solo operators.
I really couldn't help but think it was just Engineers in a room patting themselves on the back for their ingenuity.

G'day mate!
Haha, good to hear. Happy to see someone benefit from this.
You’ll sell this just like the others…
@@Yupthereitism🤣🤣🤣
Have you considered trying Kipon's EF-L speed booster with the 6k FF? Allows you to shoot 4k 60fps 17:9 with extra stop of light and better rolling shutter around 15ms while still maintaining FF coverage.
I’ve tried this method with my Komodo, but always noticed the drop in quality. Perhaps super 35 on the 6k FF would be different.
Absolutely!
The only thing that i would have appreciated over its current design and features is a V mount battery.
But there are three things (as I already said on BM forum) that this camera needs to be a success :
- a BM screen with touch interface and video feed and power with just one cable
- a BM side handle with start and stop recording and fn buttons
- AND SOME FREAKINC CODECS OTHER THAN ONLY BRAW !!! ProRes, h264, hevc265... no clients want to deal with braw ! Only for personnal projects it is good
They really need that monitor with touch screen interface. Would love to have more codecs too.
That price drop is crazy!
So Glad I have a few years until I’ll be looking for a new Camera because by then the new stuff will be awesome hopefully.
Take your time brother, no rush to buy a new camera.
For the Monitor, I would wait until they launch a Video Assist that use both USB-C for both power and video signal and control. Something that you need to pay a huge premium with RED (800 for a DVI by Red to 16Pin by RED to use your 3500 EVF, or a 3500 small HD monitor)
There will be a 'Pro' version soon addressing everything.
I hope so.
If I could like this video a thousand times, I would.
6K pro is still a fantastic camera and I'm glad you're making the most of it.
Yeah best to wait for some revisions I think.
Yea, this thought makes sense. Maybe buying time for real upgrades.
I agree with the screen on the side would have been fine if it could swing out and flip up
The Puxus. As Australians we appreciate our neighbours accent ❤️🙌🏼
If you’re an Aussie I’m afraid you’re living in a glass house if we’re talking accents there mate.
Bring on Blackmagic cube version 2!!
No doubt. They've already made it to my comments section. 😅
@@thesavagefilmmaker 😅
Hopefully they'll upgrade the screen to a flip out side screen, then problem solved. I'll literally not be buying one just due to screen placement.
Good points !
Thank you! You are 100% correct. It's almost they were like, "here's your damn box camera, now leave us alone". Give us 2 damn xlr ports and a 120fps in at least 4k. This is the same company that won't let us record in BRaw via hdmi to the video assist. So stupid!
Roll on V2 hopefully with some more serious R&D.
Can u use
Blackmagic PYXIS 6K with dji rs3
Don't see why not.
Do you have any video of your Pocket RIG?
In this video I detail how I setup my 6k cameras at the moment, will do a more in-depth one soon. th-cam.com/video/EOxEIjSw33U/w-d-xo.html
BMD cameras = fantastic image quality/terrible design.
They're nothing if not consistent!!
My ursa touchscreen stopped working. I can see it but it doesn't respond to touch. I think I forever hate BM for it. Would probably be different with global in all of their cameras though
Happened to my pocket 6k. It's a common problem
if the side screen would have to be used for monitoring, then it would obviously be a disaster haha, but for settings i don't think it's an issue at all. i think it's cool that they provide a larger screen then the komodo perhaps for monitoring, and for that it had to be on the side. it obviously needs a second monitor anyway, and yes, blackmagic should make one that you can plug directly into the same port as the viewfinder. i think the flip screen wouldn't be ideal at all bc looking so far down is not ideal ergonomically. it would need to be more up top. quite few inexpensive cameras have this with an internal screen, but i mean something like the canon c200, that would be ideal it think.
by the way i'm mostly saying this because i use a canon c70, and i wish it had the same monitor design as the c200. love everything else about that camera
I think I'm going to keep my Pocket 6K Pro (not in my pocket, though)!
Why not!
''Nucking Futs''... love itt.. ❤❤❤
Thank you for your video. Very informative. Can you record with SSD and CFExpress Type B card simultaneously as real time backup in your Blackmagic 6K Full Frame?
I don't believe so, doesn't provide that option.
@@thesavagefilmmaker Thank you.
bpu is not a limited system, id been using that battery since 2015... its fine also the reason why they use bpu, because if you dont want the vmount and want lighter battery it will do, and if you want vmount, there is already bpu to vmounts its already been available 10 years ago, blackmagic knew this.
I think V-mounts would be much more functional. Converting BPU to V-mount is an extra unnecessary step.
It's only 400 dollars more. That accounts for a little bit of development and the sturdier frame of the camera.
There’s so many cameras out with the options you mentioned I wouldn’t even complain about the blackmagic. If it’s a problem, choose one better suited.
I did. But if you don’t complain you don’t get improvement. This is TH-cam mate where people share their opinions.
@@thesavagefilmmaker I understand you have an opinion, I wasn’t coming at you for that. There’s no limit on options, but people want to spend a certain price and that is when there are omissions such as the ones you mentioned. The line up has the features you want, the price point does not
Good video, interesting points, well presented. One day, BM will produce the perfect camera... well, it's something to aspire to anyway. 🙂 Cheers.
Fingers crossed!

Not really, this does have one touch autofocus but it’s not continuous, so it’s not very useful.

Which camera has the new sensor?
the new FF sensor will be in the URSA 12k FullFrame. Pyxis and BMCC6K are the same sensor
@@Frontigenics Thanks. Seems the missing feature of the Pyxis was a new sensor.
You nailed the thumbnail!
Thank you.
They are trying black magic voodoo on you. 😂

I think we forget black magic is a design company that happens to make cameras , they don’t care about the regular lol they are going to try things they did this to say ok ok we make cinema cameras so here’s the look y’all want but like we want we going try this side thing
Top screen is the worst part of the Komodo, this is a great setup.
If you say so.
I won't buy it, but would buy that over the phyxis.
@@Frontigenics why the 12k and not the coming 17k? Besides the higher price?
@@annebokma4637 yea mostly just the price… I don’t think they’ve even said what it is yet. But both have the new sensors that are supposedly 16stops.
They're gonna make money, so they will probably release another version with and defilter.
Hence why the bmcc exists for you
No I’m the exact demo for this body. They just got it wrong. But please tell me how they’re not flaws?
It's the same thing everyone complained about Canon for doing in their cameras.
if they did the screen like the Komodo... more than likely BMD would have been sued
The Pyxis is not for solo film maker. End of story.
The complaints about this camera are hilarious. I think most people are really IN LOVE with complaining. Have it then, complain away!!!
Exactly. When you step back and think that we have a 6K FullFrame RAW camera now at $1500... it's mind blowing. Even if it's a *slightly older sensor-- that kind of tech/specs were only available in a $25k+ Red camera just 5 years ago. It's nuts.

And that someone wants/makes to change the Black Magik business strategy, and sends Black Magic in the wrong way, make them spend time and money for nothing.
This is a business competition. It always happens. Wish, the Black Magic would not go in the wrong way too far.
exactly.....
whatever you say anyways im gonna get the camera anyways.
If you're happy with the shortcomings, all good my friend.
Putting an outdated 2018 sensor in a new but, mediocre body is a fail in my book. I’ve decided to take a pass and go with a Komodo. Even Kinefinity has a better product on the market.
Komodo is not full frame and doesn’t have great audio inputs. Kinefinity doesn’t do Raw. But you certainly can’t beat Red Raw for colour grading.
@@thesavagefilmmaker
That’s correct they could have but that would have been a complete redesign of the optical block and a dedicated PL or EF models (not unlike we have now).
I couldn’t say why the only have 1 XLR but it might be that the 12g SDI has a price too and to mitigate against the higher price they cut one XLR ( while know isn’t just a plug A to D circuit etc)
The fixed screen swivels cost money.
I'm with you, rolling shutter is an issue depending on your style. Largely I have not had to many problems with it in the doc work I've done.
Boxcamera = rigging!!!!! always.
Rig me a proper v-mount option then Blackmagic!
