People wanted a box camera to be able to rig it up for their specific use case. The screen on the side is just a glorified settings screen that you also can use to see what you are shooting. (Yes, Blackmagic should make an external monitor for controlling the camera). And I personally don't care about the lack of HDMI, SDI is objectively better. it would be nice to have a v-mount battery instead, and I think BMD have gotten their feedback for a 2nd or a pro version of this camera

    • @MrCoffis

Good point, I don't use gimbals so that wouldn't be a problem for me. I prefer V-mount because I can power multiple accessories with the same battery. But that is the beauty of a box camera, you can rig it up as you want, and in this case, choose which type of battery you want

On sticks I operate from the operator side of the camera, but I do agree that it's not ideal when handheld. But the komodo is far from an ideal option either since once you go above head height you run into the same issues.

Thank you for the breakdown. Guy! having your opinion is always valuable and your points are very reasonable! I was thinking exactly the same things, being a box camera for the sake of the form-factor only won't cut it so we might want to see what BM is going to learn from this release and what version 2 or 3 Pixys will look like.
I'm still happy I went for 6K Pro when I did and I love this camera, even though I was used to shooting on full frame DSLR. I adapted to Super35 sensor quite quickly and everything else is so good I don't feel like changing to anything less, no internal NDs, no usable screen, etc, so I'm not even upset about being unable to get 6K FF right now or Pixys for that matter. Screen on top of Komodo is horrible. The minute you have it on a tripod you can't get to it. I see the screen on the side as a fancy user interface, just like every camera has its controls on the side - RED, Arri, Venice, FX6 etc etc. Not sure where you're going with the top thing. No pro operator wants that. And why are you talking about an assistant? The screen is on the operator side of the camera, not the assistant side - see Venice. P.S. Not a BM fanboy - own Sony cams!

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

I very rarely operate a camera at head height, so controlling the camera from where I am positioned (behind the camera) is very important to me and I'm sure to many filmmakers shooting handheld, off sticks, easy rig.

    • @donmcvey

@@thesavagefilmmaker The screen on the side isn't intended to be the operator screen. These guys assume you'll add a 3rd party monitor like a Portkeys, Small HD etc. I don't know anyone with a Komodo who ops off the screen. Have you seen that little top screen? It's rubbish. They've also got that lovely looking EVF which I'm sure you could use HH from above or on the shoulder if you rig it with a V-lock. My concerns with this camera are the bad RS, no NDs and only having Braw codec, not the side screen for menus.

IMO this is why the side screen is flawed. Let’s say you’re shooting a documentary scene and you’re running audio into the camera. You noticed the audio is a bit on the low side so now you have to ruin your shot by flipping the camera on its side to access the touchscreen menu. Like he mentioned in the video if black magic offers a screen down the road with menu access this will obviously be fixed.

Nice video as always ! Like many I think the screen on the side is not the deal breaker here. Although it is too big making the camera a bit too long, there is here a big missed opportunity to make the screen swivel. So you can use the camera in its smallest form.
The battery choice is also debateable... every BM camera uses a different battery brand and model... they should stick with one (and V-mount would have been better).
But there are three things (as I already said on BM forum) that this camera needs to be a success :
    - a BM screen with touch interface and video feed and power with just one cable
    - a BM side handle with start and stop recording and fn buttons
    - AND SOME FREAKINC CODECS OTHER THAN ONLY BRAW !!! ProRes, h264, hevc265... no clients want to deal with braw ! Only for personnal projects it is good

I’m mainly a Panasonic shooter but when I saw the 6k FF I purchased it. Tried it for about a month and sold it. Loved the image but the battery was so bad I only used it with a v-mount battery which blocked the screen so I had a screen on top. I really didn’t like the sound I was getting and with no way to sync my Mixpre 3 ii other than clap….. I decided to sell it. I would rather put my own ND’s on the front of the lens rather than have bad internal NDs so I didn’t mind lack of ND. I used to own the Komodo and I hated the top screen and only used that camera with an SDI monitor but sold that one too. When I saw the PYXIS release I immediately ordered it as it has a time code port, love the screen on the side as it will only be for status as I’ll still run an SDI monitor on top and I’m sure someone will have a v-mount option by the time it ships. What this camera gives me over the S5iix is 6k open gate with anamorphic 1.6 in true 24fps. Have a set of Sirui anamorphic L mount lenses with a 1.6 squeeze so this camera was made for me. I wouldn’t have cared if they put the monitor on the bottom…..

if the side screen would have to be used for monitoring, then it would obviously be a disaster haha, but for settings i don't think it's an issue at all. i think it's cool that they provide a larger screen then the komodo perhaps for monitoring, and for that it had to be on the side. it obviously needs a second monitor anyway, and yes, blackmagic should make one that you can plug directly into the same port as the viewfinder. i think the flip screen wouldn't be ideal at all bc looking so far down is not ideal ergonomically. it would need to be more up top. quite few inexpensive cameras have this with an internal screen, but i mean something like the canon c200, that would be ideal it think.

We asked for a box shaped Pocket 6k pro/Cinema 6k FF. I rather have no screen and a smaller form factor. I feel like the design is centered around fitting the screen on the camera. I also rather have a s35 6K sensor and get higher frame rates. I miss the ND from the 6K pro. I can live without IBIS and AF. The cam should have 2 xlrs. I'm not sold on the Sony batteries. But if it fixes the terrible battery life. It's okay. I mostly shoot on a gimbal. So I like a smaller lighter battery.

Blackmagic has already stated the Pyxis is not for price-conscious videographers, but is for entry level cinematographers. I don't need the 4" side screen to flip out. I'll be using the EVF or the video assist 7". I'll also be using it with the NiSi Athena Prime 5-lens kit and drop-in ND filters at $6K. I don't need or want built-in NDs because I want the creative flexibility to use my own ND options. Battery is not an issue. You can get the larger Sony BPU that runs for 5 hours. I don't need an HDMI either, because I need longer cable runs in my 1700 sq ft studio. Lack of ProRes is not an issue. You can easily export ProRes from Fusion Studio with the Saver node. Your DaVinci Studio license also works for Fusion Studio. Nothing said is this video dissuaded me. My Pyxis is on preorder.

Everyone who can't afford a Komodo, should want this camera it could have stolen so much of that market share with a few more improvements. And you're BPU battery is going to run your Pyxis and your 7inch monitor for 5 hours? I don't think so. But if you're happy with the compromises, go for it. This is just my opinion on why I'm not.

To have screen on top they have to manufacturer a new screen, even though it's small, it will cost alot more and they might need to tweak their firmware to fit the new size and shift stuff around. You lost me at “One Person Shooter or Solo operator” That’s what the Pocket body design is for. This camera is clearly designed to op with an AC and crew. Screen on side is better for when cam is on top sticks or rigged high and you can still adjust settings.
Overall it’s a screen for settings and info that happens to show image if you choose.
If they took the screen away and made a 3in one like Arri or Venice with nobs/wheels to navigate. People would be up in arms about them taking away the beloved UI on the cameras.
Have the 6KFF and I’m getting the Pyxis. Why? Because I’ll have the best of both ergonomics for solo and production gigs.
All of which can easily be paid off with the return investment in two weeks worth of work and the rest of the year would be strictly profit.
Or I can get an Alexa 35 and take a year or two paying that off before I start making profit back on it

@@thesavagefilmmaker Yes the 12K and 17K are designed with crew in mind and are competing with Alexa, Sony Venice, Red. but not all productions with a crew can afford those higher tier rentals. Or they realize they don’t need that high spec of a camera and would rather use the budget more wisely elsewhere. That’s why a medium tier now exists like Komodo X, Burano. That is where the Pyxis stands tier wise. Low to medium budget with crew trying to get amazing image with what they have.
The bonus is that there’s another camera with the same sensor in the same image as that a cam. But you can solo operate, running & gun and get some matching b-roll. Or film a solo doc. thats the Pocket and 6k FF comes into play.

From One fanboy to another, I'm about to out-fanboy you. Your argument about this camera doesn't make sense and is outright rubbish. Now, why am I saying this? In your 1st B-roll clip, you have a two-camera setup for an interview with two external monitors on the cameras while trashing the Pyxis for needing an external monitor. I'm sure you have reasons for needing external monitors for your setup, but could you let me know why this camera is trash? Because you need an external monitor or an EVF? Having a 4" 1,500 nit monitor on the side of the camera is revolutionary. It saves a ton of real estate for other accessories. If you put a top handle on the Komodo, the monitor becomes useless, so you return to an external monitor. BlackMagic is aimed at professional filmmakers with this camera. This camera was designed for a professional workflow, meaning it's meant to be rigged.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker

I didn't say this camera was trash. I said it's got some major flaws that mean I don't think it's a worthy upgrade from the 6K Full Frame. I always use external monitors when doing Doc work, that's just standard operating procedure. However with the FF it's much easier to change my settings from the back, than looking at a front monitors image and then changing settings on the side of the camera, you don't see how that's a little ass backwards?? Of course you're going to rig the camera, but there's a difference between a functional rig and one that isn't.

Obviously your lack of technical understanding is shining through like staring into the sun. The reason for not putting Built in ND filters is not the lack of space in the body. It’s because of the flange depth of the L Mount there is no room to fit the filters between the back of the lens and the sensor. That does not change because the body has more room it’s that way because that’s what L Mount requires. Had they have gone with a dedicated PL or LPL mount they could have done that.
It’s built to a budget and a market.
You can’t have everything for 3k.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker

That’s correct they could have but that would have been a complete redesign of the optical block and a dedicated PL or EF models (not unlike we have now).
But zero chance of that with any mirrorless mount. There simply isn’t any room.
If they do this and I’m not saying they won’t be prepared to pay a lot more than 3k. Bit like the Pocket Cinema (L mount) and the 6k pro (EF mount) the pro is more expensive in spite of the fact that it has a cheaper sensor. The ND’s come at a price. I agree it would be great and maybe down the line they do that in PL and or EF.
I couldn’t say why the only have 1 XLR but it might be that the 12g SDI has a price too and to mitigate against the higher price they cut one XLR ( while know isn’t just a plug A to D circuit etc)
The fixed screen swivels cost money. Sony have had fixed side screens for years no protest from the market. Look at theBMD no holds barred 12K FF not much wanting there but it costs 15k (still cheap). For 15k you could buy 2 Sony or Arri Eye pieces.
I don’t think BMD works in a vacuum but they are building to a budget and sometimes you have to compromise to hit the target.
If they could add it for the price they would. Personally I think they get it more right than they get it wrong. Battery that is a strange one but there has to be a reason for it and it probably comes down to money.
Komodo X $20k great camera but better than the 12k FF at $15k not even close.
But I say if the Komodo X works better for you then spend the extra $17k over the Pyxis and you still won’t have built in ND’s but you will have the screen where you want it.

Brother, with due respect, everything you said is rubbish and quite disappointing. For you to be such a BMD user, you sounded naive of what a cinema camera is. You talked about how many BMD cameras you own...right? Well, I own more. From the first Big Ursa to Ursa Mini 4.6K to Ursa Mini G2 to the pocket 6K to the Pocket full frame to now going to purchase the Pyxsis. So that statement you made was silly. Also, I make movies. Not content, not documentary, not weddings...movies! Over 10 Full length movies under my belt. Also, these are movies that are streaming on major platforms such as Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Prime, Peacock and iTune. SO I'm not your typical TH-camr. Now, about your laughable review. First, the screen. On top , they gave you many ways to mount a monitor on top or you can use the EVF. So that argument/complaint doesn't hold weight. Second, if they gave you the adjustable screen on the side, it then becomes Ursa Mini (which will be stupid on their part). So the screen is fine. Set your damn settings and be done with it. Also, there are tons of cinema cameras with screens on the side, why aren't you whining about those cameras?? If they copied Komodo, then why buy the Pyxsis?? That would be stupid and dumb on their part. Movie DPs set their cameras up (settings) for the day and focus on framing...only a TH-cam content creator or wedding guys changes settings every 5 minutes. Lastly, people whine about the ND...every movie set and major TV series sets have/has a thing called matte box with all kinds of filters. SO that kills that argument. WHy?? Because that's how the pros do it sir. If you shoot movies (solo or with a crew) this camera can be rigged to fit every single thing on set. Which is what this camera was designed for. DPs that are actually shooting movies, not sitting on TH-cam complaining about a camera that was designed for controlled environment( movies sets and TV series sets). So your argument is flawed my guy. Any professional film DP will tell you you are just complaining to complain. Not to mention , it's only $3K. Smdh...so if you want a run and gun camera, go buy that and quit your whining.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker

A few things; Firstly aside from the dubious monitor placement, you think one mini XLR input, choosing BPU batteries to power the Pyxis, and no update to the sensor is PRO for BM's first Cube cine cam? C'mon pal, let's be real. Secondly, assessing me as simply being an ignorant TH-cam/Content creator only reveals your own. A brief review of my channel would show otherwise. So don't try to flex on me with your BM use, or your experience, I have a web series shot on the Ursa G1 available on Amazon Prime, I just filmed a doc where I travelled to 6 countries filming on Blackmagic 6k's. I've also made two feature films, which sold worldwide, and one feature doc. You can watch a breakdown of one of my MOVIES shot on the Ursa G1 on this channel. So when we talk about what you do vs what I do, with all due respect - don't throw rocks at a man holding a machine gun. And you say, 'Only a TH-cam content creator or wedding guy changes settings every 5 minutes' I guess you're forgetting traditional Documentary filmmakers who constantly need to adjust their settings? Or the days on narrative film sets where you are in uncontrollable environments - (like outside), so whose argument is flawed, my guy? I shoot across multiple formats, and I want the most FUNCTIONAL, flexible, well-thought-out Cube that takes the lessons and tech pre-existing from the Ursa line and other BM cameras and delivers something smaller, better. The Pyxis sadly isn't IT. I'm complaining because without people complaining, BM might think they just hit a home run, (which they didn't) and they won't make the necessary improvements to hit a home run in the future. If you're happy buying a softball, then, by all means, go ahead. I'm sure you'll make it work, but 'making it work' is too often the default when we talk about Blackmagic cameras. To be honest, I respect your hustle and your accomplishments, you just called out the wrong person to make an argument that my opinion is based on inexperience or being a 'TH-camr' as opposed to a legit 'Filmmaker'.
