As much as I am hoping they can do this, it very well might be hardware limited. If so I would welcome Blamagic to make a Micro Cinema Camera G2 that is fundamentally the same as the Micro Studio, but with 3 at least important changes: 1. Bluetooth 2. Pyxis monitor compatible USB 3. Some card type of media. These 3 things would make the camera far more usable; however, I would also love to see an upgraded variant with at least some of the following: 4. Super35+ sensor (A 6k variant of their RGBW sensor with a would be a dream) 5. L-mount ( or keep the MFT if they can fit a super35 into it like the JVC GY-LS300) 6. NPF Battery power
There's a lot to love about the Pyxis, but two things have held me back from getting one, 1) no internal ND's (a huge negative for me, especially when the Cinema Camera 6K has them in a much smaller form factor), and 2) the rolling shutter. Blackmagic has always had problems with rolling shutter in their sensors. With the Cine Ursa, they proved that they can overcome that issue, but it's a frustration that they should have fixed with this camera. The Pyxis doesn't need Venice 2's 3ms rolling shutter, but 20ms is bad. Something similar to the FX3 (around 9ms) would be huge. I hope they fix it in Gen 2
Usually, I hate any possible intros, but this one is epic. Can't stop laughing how hilarious and good it is. 😅🤩 Pixis 😂 I love it. So, now let's watch the video.
I learned A LOT from your video, some new approaches. I’m already sold on moving up to Pyxis but there was new ideas here I really look forward to trying. I’m disappointed the low light issues of the 6K are still going to be a challenge but I’m used to it.
Great video ! The Pyxis is certainly designed for narrative and documentary/commercial work that requires more than 1 person. So pumped to get my hands on one!!
For the moment, we have no such plans as cases where Bluetooth isn't reliable are very rare. This is because the controller is very close to the camera and therefore the Bluetooth signal quality is very high.
I find it a bit strange that they didn't fix the rain and dust issue straight away with this mode, as it was finally fixed for the URSA BG2 by releasing the ENG kit.
I noticed on your gimbal setup that you have this long cable wrap on each axis for your cables. Do you have a video on that? I’d love to try something like that for my gimbal setup to minimize cable tug
It appears to be a effective camera, but the view finder/screen on the camera head, can you or can you not detach it from one side, so that a camera operator can have a view of the shot? Just in case if the secondary monitor isn't included with the camera gear.
My only want is for auto-focus. Stability can be done by lens and gimbal makers. "In Body Image Stabilization" (IBIS) would be nice. There are accelerometers in BM cameras to aid in Post, for image stabilization, via DaVinci Resolve, but you may lose some pixels on the boarders of your image (buffer loss). After edit of this train, you can scale down (during export) to 4K without any frame loss. Always keep project at 6K and never down-scale till output.
Does this camera have full RGB painting control over blutooth like the other studio cameras? I thought this was taken out but would be amazing if its doable!
How do you feel about the deliberate choice to limit the frame rate in 6K 16:9 to 48 FPS and not the regular PAL 50? The sensor would be more than able of this readout, so this really looks like an imposed limitation from Blackmagic to have 50p with such a heavy crop. I really wanted too like this camera, but aside of the unpopular layout of the screen/comands, the only braw codec available and the poor Hi iso, this added unnecessary crop in such a commonly used frame rate seriously bothers me.
Yes that's a bit sad, I wish it could have been 50. Should have mentionned it in the review. We mostly use 24/25/30 so that's fine for us. Braw is so crazy easy, convenient and fast to edit in Resolve that we have stopped using Prores for a long time.
@@MiddleThings I really hope they'll add 50p in a future firmware update, honestly I see no technical reason why couldn't be implemented. Braw is great, but is not so adopted, and on fast turnaround gigs can be a real limiting factor. Can I ask if is possible to capture together the audio from the 3.5 mic AND the single mini Xlr on the front (recording then 3 audio tracks)? Thanks
Even with step up rings, a lack of internal NDs is a pain for a solo shooter. I've gone back and forth between cameras that have them and cameras that don't for the last 20 years and it's always much better with NDs if you don't have a full crew. Many of us, were willing to pay the extra $500-$800 for the Blackmagic 6kPro over the 6kG2 JUST FOR INTERNAL ND filters (no doubt why many retailers constantly sell the G2 at a discount while the Pro is never discounted). Anything that goes IN FRONT of the lens can cost you serious time during a shoot. I can normally change a lens pretty quickly but when I have to add screwing on a filter (and messing with additional step up/down rings); I may have already lost a shot I'll never get back. I would have paid extra for a Pyxis with internal ND filters (and ProRes) so I really hope BMD releases a Pyxis Pro at some point.
This camera honestly confuses the hell out of me. It's great in specific scenarios, but generally in those same scenarios you'd be renting or using a better camera anyways.. I'm glad they finally made a cube form factor and I hope people enjoy it though.

Great Video! (Regardless of what the haters say. They rarely actually Buy any of the things they comment on anyways.) 1) So how Have you been dealing with the lack of a real 16x9 aspect on the 6K Cinema? 2) Is there any linking between Middle Things, Companion, and Central Control? Each seems to do something the other can't, which is all good, but getting them to play nicely with each other is what I'm begging for. (For example: I have a Tricaster control panel that Central Control Core makes feel like the Panel Blackmagic meant to make. Except I'd LOVE this perfect Joystick to work the way Middle Control does! How do I make That happen?)
Thank you ! 1) I never used the Cinema Camera 6K for live production so I cropped every time the image in Resolve to fit a 16:9 frame. 2) Middle Things has a Companion plugin yes. You can connect our app to joysticks, middle remote and companion at the same time. Central control is not supported though.
4:33 the same old lie continues and it’s hard to die. Image quality is not define only by the sensor. If you put a good sensor with a bad processor even if using the same color science algorithm you might not get the same picture or quality as if you were using a more modern CPU or processing unit. Sensor contributes for his fair share to the image quality but is not (and this have been the case for a while now) the only component in a Camera to determine the overall image quality. So 2 cameras with the same sensor might not necessarily give you the same image. So please do the job of checking the Pyxis image quality and compared it with the one from the Pocket 6K and or the URSA
Yes absolutely ! But just to be clear, I did not say the image processing was the same, I only said the sensor was the same. It also shares the same color science version. And since I am used to Blackmagic having consistent image quality from camera to camera, I do not expect big differences between the two even though the cooling is better. I did some quick comparisons on my side that I did not show because it was so similar, but you can check Of Two Lands videos, the difference is very minimal. This is why I did not talk about it.
the thumbnail and intro gave me a hint of that kinda PURCHASE JUSTIFICATION VIDEO "review", glad that vibe kinda went away as i watched but might be worth thinking about that when making your thumbnail and title.
A masterpiece? It has horrible rolling shutter. That is a major deal breaker. After you have shot on a camera with no rolling shutter, you will never go back.
Honestly, this is my biggest concern. I want to get this camera strictly for anamorphic capture (main camera is FX6) but the rolling shutter seems like a dealbreaker. Big bummer it doesn’t perform any better than the BMCC6K
@@hivetech4903 I agree it’s a little wishful right now. But more features is always better, and global shutter is certainly a feature. It’s also becoming more accessible. The one in the video was an early pre production unit this is why
Thanks for your video! Interesting to use the Pyxis live. But how much delay on SDI out? As fast as Studio/URSA Cams or slow as Cinema 6k?
